RuPaul is on a roll, picking up his third consecutive Emmy on Sunday in the outstanding host for a reality or reality-competition program. But the “RuPaul’s Drag Race” team is really looking to make history next week, when they hope to become the first unscripted show to win both the host and the Reality-Competition Series Emmy in the same year.
RuPaul won in a category that, as IndieWire noted last month, may be one of the most diverse in the entire Emmy race this year. Although the world of TV hosts — particularly in late night — has been notoriously mostly white and male throughout TV history, things are changing. And this year’s nominees for reality-competition host was the best example of that: RuPaul was up against nominees of whom not a single one was a straight, white male: W. Kamau Bell (“United Shades of America with W. Kamau Bell...

A California man living on disability checks had his fortune change after a blanket his grandmother used to cover the ground when her cat had kittens sold for more than a million dollars at auction.

Guillermo del Toro owes two famous friends and 14 tequila shots for his serendipitous introduction to Sally Hawkins, star of his Golden Lion–winning Oscar contender, “The Shape of Water.” On January 12, 2014, he received a call from from fellow Mexican directors Alfonso Cuarón and Alejandro González Iñárritu, who instructed him, “‘Dude, come over to the Golden Globes party'”; Cuarón had won the evening’s Best Director statuette for “Gravity.” At Vulture Festival this weekend, del Toro recalled his reply: “I’m not going. I’m watching ‘Antiques Roadshow.'”

“Lip Sync Battle” keeps on rocking, recently setting a Spike Network ratings record. Executive producer and co-creator Casey Patterson says it’s the very nature of the audio-dubbed beast that makes it so successful. “It’s a show you want to watch with other people, and there’s something very modern about that,” Patterson told TheWrap of the series, nominated for Best Structured Reality Program. Like all the reality-show categories, structured reality tends to see the same shows year after year: “Shark Tank,” “Antiques Roadshow” and “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives” are three constants in a category that pretty much defines apples and oranges.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is your go-to guilty pleasure viewing?
Daniel Fienberg (@TheFienPrint), The Hollywood Reporter
Love what you watch, watch what you love and don’t be guilty to love what you love. Life is too short to have guilty pleasures. Of course, are there things I watch that I know aren’t “quality”? Sure! Any time I watch an episode of “House Hunters” or “House Hunters International” and find myself rooting for an incompatible, self-absorbed couple with an outlandish and indefensible budget to either break up on the spot or to make a housing choice that will surely facilitate a “Money Pit-“style scenario in which their...

Will Hipsters Finally Get Their ‘American Idol’?
Reality-tv historians rightly remember Antiques Roadshow as one of the genre’s formative forebears. One of the earliest updates of the storied traveling freak show for the televisual medium, the venerable institution (the original British version dates to the very punk year of 1979) paved the way for cheap, glorious crap like the early rounds of American Idol, everything about Hoarders, and everything on Hgtv. But what if, instead of finding garbage in their attics, insufferable people made the garbage with their own two hands? What if NBC filmed it? That’s the question that hipster hero Amy Poehler and her production company, Paper Kite Productions, are asking in their sell of The Handmade Project, an “unscripted series” focused on competitive arts and crafts. To make things even more affable, she will be joined by Nick Offerman, her co-star on NBC’s hit Parks and Recreation. NBC...

Yesterday was a tough one for the Newell family. Actually, the past few months haven’t been easy; my dad is – well, the best way to describe the situation is that my father is a soul trapped in the shell of what was once a healthy, vibrant human being. To be honest, I don’t know why he isn’t dead. And my mom had a stroke about a month ago – and although she’s up and walking around (with the aid of a walker), the energetic and vivacious woman with whom I laughed and fought and loved is gone, too, leaving behind an old lady who is dip-shit batty – though I must admit that some of what she says is pretty funny.
And at least they both are in the same nursing home.

In December 2013, the Justice Department concluded its first successful prosecution of a wine fraud case when Rudy Kurniawan, an Indonesian national, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for counterfeiting rare and very expensive wines. The conviction was the conclusion of a series of incidents that rocked the world of fine-wine collecting to its foundations, but which went largely unnoticed otherwise, even though it fundamentally shifted the perspective of an entire industry.

Now we're talking! Forget the Golden Globe Awards and its category randomness. ("The Martian" is a musical or comedy? Ok then.) The 21st annual Critics' Choice Awards nominations were just revealed -- including both TV and film categories -- and they added a lot of new players to the game. Some welcome players, too. (Nice to see you, "The Leftovers" and "UnREAL.") And maybe some not-so welcome players. (Tom Hardy gets an action star nod for "Mad Max: Fury Road"? He was barely in it.)
The winners will be named January 17 and the ceremony will air live on A&E, hosted by T.J. Miller.
