Stereotyping is a sin both in art and in life. Films, both as a piece of art and as a superstructure, (to borrow a descriptor used by film critic Roger Garcia) often commit this, however, shoehorning great talents in roles that almost never really define the breadth of their competence. The late Filipina actress Cherie Gil, who local filmgoers have generally identified more as an actress suited for the role of the antagonist, has more than proven she can do more than one kind of characterization; however, in classics such as “Manila by Night” (1980) and Oro, “Plata Mata” (1982) and arguably in the most multidinous way possible in “Sonata,” a 2013 independent movie which also won her the best actress accolade at the 2015 Asean International Film Festival and Awards.

Last week we brought you the insane and bloody red-band trailer for ABCs of Death 2. A tamer green-band trailer has now been released that you can show to your kids if you want! It's not as gory as the red-band, but it's still a fun trailer to watch that's packed full energy.
The movie consists of 26 short films, and each one has a completely different director and storyline. Some of the directors in the mix include Vincenzo Natali (Splice), Rodney Ascher (Room 237), E.L. Katz (Cheap Thrills), and the Soskasisters (American Mary). Here's the synopsis:

Making a name for themselves with Dead Hooker in a Trunk and American Mary, twin sisters Jen and Sylvia Soska make their anthology debut with The ABCs of Death 2, contributing a short film to the madness.
Though we don't yet have any idea what their entry will be about, we can be pretty damn sure it's going to be a hard one for male audiences to endure, as this just released behind-the-scenes shot leads us to believe. You have been warned, men!!

Hot on the heels of their ambitious horror anthology The ABCs Of Death, Drafthouse producers Ant Timpson and Tim League decided that the world needed another collection of horror shorts spanning every letter of the alphabet – and adventurous horror fans much like myself rejoiced. The ABCs Of Death 2 was greenlit, the directors were selected, and the inevitable waiting game began.
I tried on numerous occasions to extract as much information as possible from contributing artists – Jerome Sable, Aharon Keshales, Navot Papushado were tight-lipped in our interviews – but it looks like Magnet and Drafthouse are ready to start opening the floodgate of horrors hiding amidst these 26 short stories that are ready to shock, scare, and revolt viewers in ways the original didn’t dare.

From mid-August through October, a contest was held to find the 26th director of The ABCs of Death 2, all entrants tasked with making short films centered around a word beginning with the letter "M." Today a winner has been chosen.

From the Press Release
Producers Ant Timpson, Tim League, and Magnet Releasing have announced the winner of The ABCs Of Death 2’s “Search for the 26th Director” – Robert Boocheck’s riotous M Is For Masticate.
The original ABCs Of Death, comprised of 26 alphabet-themed ways to die from the biggest names in horror, invited filmmakers from around the world to submit their own T-themed deaths – with one exceptional entry being chosen to appear in the final film. The tradition of selecting the 26th Director proudly continued in the 2014 sequel, this time using the letter “M.

Time and money and a cast prevented me from making my own ABCs of Death 2 short (called “M is for Money”), but it didn’t stop hundreds of others from submitting their take on the letter “M” to the horror anthology produced by Ant Timpson, Tim League, and Magnet Releasing.
After combing through all the submissions, twelve finalists have finally been selected.
The competition’s twelve finalists, half of which were chosen via public vote and half by jury selection, are Dante Vescio and Rodrigo Gasparini’s “M is for Mailbox”, Summer Johnson’s “M is for Make Believe”, Steve Daniels’ “M is for Marauder”, Robert Boocheck’s “M is for Masticate”, Sean Tretta’s “M is for Matchmaker”, Wolfgang Matzl’s “M is for Meat”, BC Glassberg’s “M is for Mind Meld”, Álvaro Núñez’s “M is for Miracle”, Antonio Padovan’s “M is for Misdirection”, Mia'Kate Russell...

The sequel to last year's epic extreme-horror anthology The ABCs of Death is now underway, and the producers have now revealed the full lineup of filmmakers participating in this installment, again with each one assigned to a letter of the alphabet. 25 directors have now been selected, with the 26th to be again chosen from fan submissions. Magnet Releasing, along with returning producers Ant Timpson and Tim League, have expanded their search beyond the horror genre this time, and their newest directorial recruits include Julian Barratt from the cult UK series The Mighty Boosh, Todd Rohal (The Catechism Catalysm, Nature Calls), Manborg creator Steven Kostanski, Argentina's Alejandro Brugués (Juan Of The Dead), Japan's Hajime Ohata (Henge), UK commercial director Jim Hosking, and Chris Nash of the mega-grossout Skinfections shorts. These new additions join the previously confirmed lineup of Álex de la Iglesia (The Last Circus, Day Of The Beast), Rodney Ascher...

Whether you liked The ABCs Of Death or not, it was pretty hard to believe a franchise wasn’t being born in the same way V/H/S took off. The formula is simple: give 26 different directors one letter from the alphabet each, give them a $5,000 budget, and let them create a short film centering around a death. While the process of putting everything together is grueling I’m sure, the effort for our directors is rather minimal compared to feature filmmaking, and it’s pretty safe to say one of these films can be churned out every year.
Now that everyone’s had a chance to see The ABCs Of Death, producers Ant Timpson and Tim League are already gearing fans up for The ABCs Of Death 2, releasing the entire list of directorial participants for their upcoming sequel. I know, I feel like I just watched the first one yesterday,...

Horror Anthology films are back. There is no doubt about it. Last year, we saw two of them – both from the same distribution company of Magnet Releasing – in V/H/S (review here) and ABC’s of Death. This year, we will see the follow-up to the former film, V/H/S. However, we will have to wait for ABC’s of Death 2 until 2014. While I consider ABCs of Death to be ”Fantastic Fest: The Movie”, the actual product wasn’t anywhere near the gratification one gets from the festival. Read the Press Release below for all the loose details. I’m really happy Jerome Sable is included on this director list as he someone I think everyone should look out for. You can even read our interview with Sable here.
