Jean-Paul Paulin, who sank into oblivion,made some interesting movies such as "l'esclave blanc " -in which a native girl drugged a white young man to keep him in her bed - and "les filles du Rhône " and funny comedies such as "l'abbé Constantin " " la nuit de Sybille "and this one.

A bank,short of the readies,is on the verge of bankrupcy .But an employee, Paul ,has an idea :he knows a family whose "oncle d 'Amérique " (rich uncle, it's a French myth which has survived through the years) is to come back from Chicago ; when he arrives the hypocrit family treats him like a king , just to discover that the would be wealthy man has only 20 $ to his name .But ,in spite of his dismay , the young clerk is not prepared to accept it: all the people in town thinks he is rich, so it is enough ; the newcomer has just -although reluctantly- to pretend ,and he will act as a guarantee ; enough to start up giant works such as derricks in the country .Then the situation goes crazy : who cares if they are useless , if there 's no oil? To believe there is black gold is enough .And when they eventually find petroleum , it's forbidden to tell it to the world because the market price would fall.

Although the ending is appalingly trite, it does not ruin the rest of the movie,which ,thanks to Claude Dauphin as a first -class crook ,is much fun to watch .
