Get ready for an onslaught of "Dune" material now that Hollywood has recognized there's quite an audience for author Frank Herbert's revered sci-fi saga. Not only do we have the upcoming Max series "Dune: Prophecy," the trailer for which reveals several sacrifices will be made, but we'll also see the return of Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides in a third movie from sci-fi maestro Denis Villeneuve.
After "Dune: Part Two" proved massively popular at a time when the box office wasn't exactly at its peak, you better believe Legendary Pictures decided to keep the spice flowing with a third "Dune" movie. The next installment in Villeneuve's epic saga looks likely to be an adaptation of the second novel in Herbert's original run, with Villeneuve previously revealing his eagerness to adapt "Dune Messiah." At this point, the man can basically do no wrong, having proven Herbert's supposedly "unfilmable...

James McAvoy has been in the entertainment industry since he was a teenager. When he made his debut as an actor in The Near Room in 1995, he was not much interested in becoming an actor. However, that changed soon and he ended up going to the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. He graduated from the academy in 2000.

Since then, he has worked with numerous great directors such as Steven Spielberg and Matthew Vaughn. Long before he gained recognition with his roles in the X-Men film series and The Chronicles of Narnia, McAvoy appeared in the miniseries Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune. However, he refused to give any advice to Timothee Chalamet when his movie Dune was about to be released in 2021.

This Dune article contains spoilers.
If the shocking ending of Dune: Part Two left you wanting more, you can actually watch Dune: Part Three right now. Kind of. Although Denis Villeneuve hasn’t fully committed to a movie adaptation of Dune Messiah, there is an often overlooked filmed version of this Dune sequel out there right now. This isn’t a bootleg or a fan film either, but The Sci-Fi Channel’s excellent Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune miniseries. This very real adaptation of Dune Messiah even stars several major Hollywood stars, including James McAvoy and Susan Sarandon, as well as Star Trek legend Alice “The Borg Queen” Krige.
If you’ve slept on this particular Dune sequel, now is possibly the best time to watch it. Here’s what to know about Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune, why it’s great, and how to watch it.

When people think of “Dune” adaptations, three projects most likely come to mind: David Lynch’s maligned “Dune” from 1984, Alejandro Jodorowsky’s failed attempt in the 1970s (immortalized in the documentary “Jodorowsky’s Dune”), and Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming 2021 version. But there’s a fourth adaptation that often goes overlooked: John Harrison’s 2000 miniseries for Syfy (known then as Sci Fi Channel) titled “Frank Herbert’s Dune.” The series was a ratings bonanza for Syfy and won two Emmys, leading to the 2003 sequel miniseries titled “Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune.” That’s where James McAvoy enters the picture.
Long before “The Chronicles of Narnia” and “Atonement,” McAvoy was cast in a main role for “Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune” miniseries, which adapted the events of Herbert’s novels “Dune Messiah” and “Children of Dune.” McAvoy played Leto II Atreides, the son of original “Dune” hero Paul Atreides and Chani (played by Timothee...

Chinese censors have approved Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi spectacular “Dune” for release in the world’s largest film market. The film has officially announced that it will hit local screens this year, although it has not yet set a release date.
In late June, Warner Bros. shifted the film’s U.S. release date back from Oct. 1 to Oct. 22 amidst a larger scheduling reshuffle by the company. In China, the film is distributed by Wanda subsidiary Legendary Pictures.
A big consideration for the timing change may have been that the planned Oct. 1 release would have coincided with China’s Oct. 1 National Day holiday and the subsequent weeks-long protectionist period during which there is an unofficial blackout on foreign titles to boost sales for local propaganda films. Other types of blockbusters, local and imported alike, should be returning to theaters around the Oct. 22 date.
The later date also bolsters its Chinese box office prospects.

Brian Herbert, son of legendary “Dune” author Frank Herbert, had one major takeaway after visiting the Budapest set of Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming adaptation of his father’s science-fiction epic: “It will forever be considered the definition adaptation” of the book (via Inverse). Villeneuve’s “Dune” is backed by Legendary and Warner Bros. and features a star-studded cast that includes Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Mamoa, Rebecca Ferguson, Dave Bautista, and Stellan Skarsgard. The film was originally scheduled to open in theaters December 18, but the pandemic pushed the tentpole into October 2021.
Prior to Villeneuve’s anticipated take on Herbert’s novel, other attempts to adapt “Dune” for the screen mostly failed. Alejandro Jodorowsky famously tried to get a “Dune” movie off the ground in the 1970s but the project never made it past the development stage. David Lynch’s 1984 adaptation was a critical failure, one that remains a tragic experience for...

There's a special thrill that comes from reading books before they're made into motion pictures, and if you're like us, you especially love comparing a novel to its movie counterpart. That's why we've compiled over 95 titles that are soon to be films, such as Frank Herbert's Dune - which will star Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, and more in the film adaptation - and Mark Greaney's The Gray Man - which will star Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling. And, of course, we're including the highly anticipated film versions of A.J. Finn's The Woman in the Window and Anna Todd's After We Collided. Keep reading to see every book you need to add to your shelf before its movie transformation!

Last November, Legendary Entertainment acquired movie and TV rights to Frank Herbert's Dune. Then, in December, it was revealed that Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve was being eyed to helm a new Dune movie, and now the screenwriter for the project has been revealed.
Variety reports that Eric Roth (Forrest Gump, The Postman, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) is set to pen the adaptation of the seminal 1965 sci-fi novel, which was the first in a series of books. Although Villeneuve was previously "in talks" to helm the Dune movie, Variety and THR mention that Villeneuve is taking on the new take on Herbert's ambitious story.
Villeneuve is also set to produce the new Dune movie with Mary Parent and Cale Boyter. Executive producers will include Thomas Tull, Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt, and Kim Herbert, with sci-fi author Kevin J. Anderson on board as a creative consultant.

Author Brian Herbert, son of "Dune" author Frank Herbert and writer of "Dune" stories since the passing of his father, has confirmed that Denis Villeneuve ("Blade Runner 2049") will direct a new "Dune" big screen feature:
Published in 1965, Herbert's epic science fiction novel is set in the distant future amidst a feudal interstellar society in which noble houses, in control of individual planets, owe allegiance to the 'Padishah Emperor'.
"...in the far future, humanity has eschewed advanced computers in favor of adapting their minds to be capable of extremely complex tasks. Much of this is enabled by the 'spice melange', which is only found on the planet 'Arrakis', a desert planet with only giant sandworms as its native lifeform.

Last month we learned that Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival director Denis Villeneuve was in talks to direct the new big screen adaptation of Frank Herbert's Dune. It's now been confirmed that he's officially signed on to helm the project set up at Legendary Pictures. The news came from Brian Herbert, the son of Frank Herbert, who posted the following on Twitter:
It's official -- Legendary Pictures has signed the very talented Denis Villeneuve to direct the exciting new Dune series film project.

This has been a dream project that Villeneuve has been pursuing, but he didn't think it would actually happen. He previously talked about his dream of directing Dune and said:
"I’m always looking for sci-fi material, and it’s difficult to find original and strong material that’s not just about weaponry. A longstanding dream of mine is to adapt Dune, but...

With Arrival and the upcoming Blade Runner 2049 under his belt, Denis Villeneuve is one of the go-to sci-fi filmmakers right now, and his résumé could only get more impressive now that he's being eyed to helm the new Dune movie for Legendary Entertainment.
Variety reports that Villeneuve is in "early talks" with Legendary to take the directing reins on the Dune reboot, with the news surfacing one month after Legendary acquired movie and TV rights to Frank Herbert's seminal 1965 sci-fi novel.
The epic novel was previously adapted for the big screen by David Lynch in 1984, and it also came to life on the small screen in the 2000 miniseries Frank Herbert's Dune and its follow-up miniseries, Frank Herbert's Children of Dune.
No further details on Villeneuve's involvement are known at this time, but we'll keep Daily Dead readers updated on the new Dune project as it develops. Would you...

Frank Herbert's Dune may be coming back to our screens, as the film and television rights have been picked up by Legendary...
After far too long, someone is taking another crack at Dune, Frank Herbert's classic series of science fiction novels. In this case, that someone is Legendary Entertainment, who are no stranger to genre franchises. There are no real details to report at the moment other than the fact that Legendary has "the film and television motion picture rights" to the Dune saga, but that's big enough news in itself. Paramount previously had the rights and had been attempting to make a new Dune movie since 2008, at one point announcing Deepwater Horizon's Peter Berg as director.
I'd like to focus on one word from the press release that's been sent out: television.

One of the most iconic and beloved science fiction stories around, Dune, is getting a new shot at the big screen, and potentially TV thanks to Legendary Pictures.
I read Frank Herbert's Dune for the first time while I was in the sixth grade, and it completely altered my views on sci-fi in general. More than just about any other work of fiction (yes, I'm including Star Wars), Dune is what drove me to be creative and pursue writing. It's a series I've come back to time and time again (I just finished my umpteenth re-read last month), and it seems perfectly suited for the big screen.
Despite some attempts, Dune hasn't seen the same blockbuster success outside of the book realm that it so rightly deserves. Hopefully, Legendary Pictures can change that. They announced today they've purchased the rights to Frank Herbert's series, with plans for a movie and even a TV series.

In 1984, David Lynch made Dune - a case study for how difficult it can be to jump from small films to major blockbusters...
It's the age old tug-of-war between art and commerce: movie studios want products they can sell, but they don't want them to look like something off a production line. They want movies that look and feel different, but not so different that audiences are too bewildered to buy a cinema ticket. In interviews, studio bosses and producers often talk about a filmmaker's "unique vision", and they often sound sincere while doing so. Yet the reality of spending huge sums on mainstream movies generally means that studios will often wind up feeling nervous when the cold reality of that vision becomes apparent.
To cite but one example, look at the fate of Josh Trank and his 2015 Fantastic Four movie. Trank was a young filmmaker who'd just come off Chronicle,...

Denis Villeneuve is either trolling sci-fi fans or just really, really ambitious. The Canadian director, who's currently promoting Arrival and in production on the Blade Runner sequel, has just said he'd like to adapt Frank Herbert's Dune. I find myself feeling bad for Villeneuve sometimes (and then I remember he's a well-off director with high-profile gigs). Especially recently when he talked about being rushed off his film Arrival so he could start on Blade Runner. And every time I talk about the movie people get angry. Considering his current work schedule I'm sure none of that negativity is getting to him. Yet. But Ridley Scott's Blade Runner is an untouchable classic to a lot of people and many don't see the point in a sequel at all. Regardless, it's happening and while doing some recent press tours, Villeneuve told Variety he has a great love for sci-fi and revealed...

It's no secret that I'm a fan of real-time strategy games, Frank Herbert's Dune, and retro gaming. When you put all of these together, you end up with a classic video game series; which has seen no love or glimmer of hope, in over a decade. It's ashame too, considering many of the Rts tropes we're used to, started with this game franchise. I think it's high time for this property to get the reboot it so rightly deserves, and today, I'm going to tell you exactly why.
First, let me say that for the longest time I didn't even know these games existed. It wasn't until the series was dead that I truly discovered them. One of the most critically panned science-fiction films in history is Dune, directed by David Lynch in 1981. The rights to the film version of Frank Herbert's novel changed hands several times before Lynch's adaptation, with potential producers including Arthur P. Jacobs (Planet of the Apes) and Dino De Laurentiis.
In 1975, arthouse cult filmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky secured the rights the Frank Herbert's Dune and began working on what would have been the most epic science fiction film ever created. Jodorowsky assembled creative geniuses and cultural icons from all over the world for the cast and music, creating his personal group of "spiritual warriors" for a two-year massive undertaking. Unfortunately, Jodorowsky's planned film and his story never truly made it beyond the storyboards until now.
At Fantastic Fest 2013, I met and spoke with director Frank Pavich, who brings to light the story of Alejandro Jodorowsky and his failed attempt to tell...

A documentary of Alejandro Jodorowsky's attempts to bring Frank Herbert's Dune to the screen, here's the trailer for Jodorowsky's Dune.
Now we can't wait to see this. Back in the 1970s, Alejandro Jodorowsky attempted to make a big screen take on Frank Herbert's novel Dune. Even today, fresh attempts to make a film based on the book struggle, but there's a real sense that this 1970s take is one of the great lost science-fiction movies.
Now, a documentary has charted Jodorowsky's attempts to bring Dune to the big screen, and how the project fell apart after two years of work. That said, lots of concept work was done, and it got some way down the road. The documentary features key interviews and access to lots of behind the scenes material.
The first trailer for Jodorowsky's Dune has now been released too, and...

How the hell do you make a book into a film? Over the years, we have seen a vast array of literary fiction transposed on to the big screen with results that vary both in creative success and sense of loyalty, some loving failures and others dismissive successes. Die Hard was based on a novel, not that you’d know it. Dune is considered a masterpiece of literature, but apparently cannot be accessed by the movies. So close and yet so far, books provide the license to visualized storytelling but cannot seem to transfer their secrets and feelings wholesale. Such different mediums and manners of expressions rarely come together in a manner that satisfies anyone. And you’ll never satisfy anyone. Usually to break even, you have to break the book or break your own film. There are only a handful of exceptions and one of them, done twice, presents...

It Looks as though Frank Herbert's Dune will need a hefty dose of melange - the mystical spice at the heart of the story - in order to travel on to the big screen again.
Paramount has given up the film rights to the world's best-selling sci-fi novel after trying to adapt it for the past four years.
Peter Berg (Hancock, upcoming Battleship) had at one point been set to direct - with Robert Pattinson rumoured to be in line for the lead role - but then the filmmaker dropped out.
Pierre Morel (Taken) stepped in and hired screenwriter Chase Palmer to rework an earlier script by Josh Zetumer.
Morel admitted the project was a challenge but later spoke enthusiastically about wanting to shoot it in 3D and create another Avatar-style otherworldly blockbuster; a release date of 2012 had been set.

That “Dune” movie gestating over at Paramount? Well it’s dead. At least, to Paramount, who after 4 years of developing the movie with scripts and attaching directors (Peter Berg was supposed to direct at one point, but left for “Battleship”, and was replaced by Pierre Morel of “Taken” fame), the studio has now given up on the franchise, and is parting ways with the rights holder, Richard P. Rubinstein. Says Rubinstein on the apparently amicable separation: Paramount’s option has expired and we couldn’t reach an agreement. I’m going to look at my options, and whether I wind up taking the script we developed in turnaround, or start over, I’m not sure yet. Right now, Dune has no commitments or attachments. Translation for that last part: “Anyone got some millions and want to take a stab at this thing?” ———-*———- Meanwhile, over at lunar land, things...

Did anyone see this coming? Deadline just published a story about how Paramount is into some deep water over troubles getting their Dune adaptation together. Apparently the rights holders "won't grant another option extension," so they've got until "next spring" to set a start date and be "absolutely confident" in the project, or they'll lose the option. We thought Taken director Pierre Morel was on-board and ready to go with his version, but Deadline says "producers Kevin Misher and Richard P. Rubinstein are going out to directors today to create a new movie out of the 1965 book." They've got a script, but need a new director. I'm not sure what's holding Paramount back with the versions Peter Berg and Morel worked on. They've got to know this is going to be an expensive, epic adaptation that comes with a lot of picky fanboys, but come on, that can't be it.

Fans of "The Wire" star and "Office" nemesis Idris Elba will get a double dose of him later this year.
Elba has taken a recurring part on Showtime's new series "The Big C," where he'll play a painter and potential love interest for Laura Linney's cancer-stricken suburbanite, Showtime says. He also stars in "Luther," a six-episode crime drama that premiered on the BBC in May and will make its way to BBC America later this year.
"The Big C," which is scheduled to premiere Aug. 16, stars Linney as a woman who decides to embrace life after being diagnosed with cancer. The show also stars Gabourey Sidibe ("Precious") and Oliver Platt as Linney's husband -- who, we're assuming, won't be all that thrilled with the presence of Elba's character in his wife's life.

How exactly do you make a modern, successful adaptation of Frank Herbert's Dune? That's the question facing director Pierre Morel.
The 1965 classic about the political and religious machinations of a galactic empire belongs to a bygone era of sci-fi writing.
In order to fit such works to the demands of modern audiences, the solution seems to be making huge changes in the adaptation process (like Children of Men) or splitting the project into several films (like Lord of the Rings).
Dune was previously brought to the big screen in 1984, with David Lynch's film getting a mixed response.
Morel - whose previous credits include kidnap thriller Taken starring Liam Neeson - told MTV: "As a David Lynch movie, I loved it. As a Dune fan, I was not such a big fan."
So what does he intend to do with own version? Morel revealed: "[My movie] is all about the first book.

The heart that pounds away in our chests only does so a finite amount of time so we owe it to ourselves to milk the maximum amount out of every moment and explore as many avenues of interest possible. Why settle for a single profession, a solitary job, one in which we lock in and tread water for the rest of our lives? Every personality has many appendages and there is no crime in sating and expressing each and every one of them.

Mostow develops 'Megas' adaptation
Jonathan Mostow is developing a feature film adaptation of his sci-fi comic book series The Megas, published by Virgin Comics.
Megas is set in a future society in which the American Revolution produced a monarchy, not a democracy, and consists of a culture of aristocracy and commoners, not to mention royal scandals.
The story is set in motion with the murder-suicide of a princely member of the Mega aristocracy and three prostitutes. Using the Bureau of Royal Investigation, the Megas try cover up the incident, which could be explosive as the king lies on his deathbed. But don't count on the agent assigned to the case, James Madison, doing the right thing.
Mostow co-wrote the book, which hits stands today, with television writer John Harrison (Dune). Peter Rubin, a conceptual artist at Industrial Light + Magic, is the illustrator.
Mostow said he had the idea swimming in his head for a while and was trying to figure out the best way to develop it.

Sci Fi's 'Tin Man' off to good start
Sci Fi Channel's journey down the yellow brick road paid off big Sunday night.
The first night of the network's six-hour miniseries Tin Man, a new take on L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, averaged more than 6.3 million viewers from 9-11 p.m., making it the most-watched telecast in network history, according to preliminary ratings data released Monday by Nielsen Media Research. Tin Man surpassed the previous record holder, Part 1 of the 2002 mini Taken (6.1 million).
Tin Man also garnered the network's best-ever single-telecast performance in the key adult demos, averaging 3.8 million viewers in adults 25-54 and 3.4 million in adults 18-49.
That beats previous record holders Taken in 25-54 (3.7 million) and Part 1 of the 2000 mini Frank Herbert's Dune in 18-49 (3.3 million).
Tin Man, produced by RHI Entertainment, stars Zooey Deschanel, Alan Cumming, Neal McDonough, Kathleen Robertson, Raoul Trujillo and Richard Dreyfuss.

'Galactica' 2nd stage blasts off
The second night of the Sci Fi Channel miniseries Battlestar Galactica rocketed past the first to deliver the channel's highest-rated program of the year. Galactica, starring Edward James Olmos, gathered 4.5 million total viewers Tuesday, surpassing the 3.9 million who watched Monday's opening of the four-hour miniseries. Tuesday's tally gave Sci Fi not only enough ratings power to blast past the WB Network and UPN in primetime but provided the third-highest-ranked program in the station's history. With an average of 4.2 million viewers, Galactica finished behind Steven Spielberg Presents Taken (5 million) and Frank Herbert's Dune (4.6 million) but bettered the more recent sequel, Children of Dune (2.7 million). Also Tuesday, Bravo's combination of Celebrity Poker Showdown and Queer Eye for the Straight Guy cooled in their second week together. Showdown dropped to 1.3 million from 1.6 million last week, while Queer Eye slipped on a similar scale to 2 million.

Debut of HBO's 'Angels' draws 4.2 mil faithful
The first installment of the HBO miniseries Angels in America took 4.2 million viewers under its wings Sunday, making it the premium cable channel's highest-rated movie this year. The three-hour block, which premiered at 8 p.m., drew an 8.6 household rating/12 share in HBO homes. Angels held up well over its running time, dipping only as low as an 8.1 at its lowest point of the evening. However, the miniseries, executive produced by Mike Nichols, did not compete with broadcast fare. HBO has seen better results from some of its original films, including Hysterical Blindness last year, but Blindness benefited from having Sex and the City as a lead-in. Another cable miniseries launched strong Monday, with Sci Fi Channel's Battlestar Galactica drawing 3.9 million viewers. While second only to Spike TV's WWE Raw on basic cable that night, the debut paled in comparison with the first installments of past Sci Fi miniseries, including Steven Spielberg Presents Taken, which premiered around the same time last year, and Frank Herbert's Dune.

Viewers 'Taken' with Sci Fi mini
Steven Spielberg's UFO miniseries Taken beamed up big ratings for Sci Fi Channel in its opening episodes. Taken averaged a 4.5 household rating over its first two nights from 9-11 p.m., starting strong Monday with a 4.9, the cable network's most-watched original program ever. The second episode drew a 4.1 on Tuesday. The eight remaining two-hour episodes, executive produced by Spielberg, air weeknights through Dec. 20. "We are hitting an extremely strong stride," said Sci Fi Channel president Bonnie Hammer, who indicated the program has delivered beyond its ratings guarantees to advertisers so far." Taken was an unknown property, but we were able to create something from scratch and attract viewers." Sci Fi's previous highest-rated program was the first part of the original miniseries Frank Herbert's Dune.
