One of the signs outside the orchard reads Annapolis a day is the Navy way, a pun on both the U. S. Naval Academy as well as the subject of this short: apples.
The instrument Andy is playing in the beginning of the cartoon is an ocarina. This cartoon was made 52 years prior to the release of critically acclaimed video game The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was released, which has been credited for making ocarinas more popular and well known, especially in the US.
The use of good and bad conscience characters, as shown here, was a popular plot element of the time.
The facially rendered trees here were a likely nod to their film counterparts in the 1939 feature The Wizard of Oz.
The humor and presentation here was of a decidedly more adult nature, though there were plenty of sight gags to appeal to juvenile moviegoers. The suggestive apple core showgirls and the song about a nightgown (worn by the devil) were just this side of the censorship envelope at the time.
