CBS originally planned to retool Gomer Pyle: USMC (1964) to feature Sgt. Carter and Cpl. Gilbert (played by Frank Sutton and Ronnie Schell) in larger roles, as they did with The Andy Griffith Show (1960) (which became Mayberry R.F.D. (1968), when Andy Griffith left the show). When Sutton and Schell joined Nabors in this production, however, the retooling plans were dropped, and the series ended.
