The show is meant to be a parody of the ABC news program, Nightline.
It is never made clear who the main character of the series is. Though Al is the central figure in some episodes, he makes sparse appearances in others.
Al, Vic and Pearce's wives remain unseen characters throughout the series.
According to Gale, Al is only at LateLine because he isn't a threat to Pearce's job.
