Carol Vorderman, the maths genius and political activist who was on Countdown for 26 years, will deliver this year’s Alternative MacTaggart at the Edinburgh TV Festival.
Vorderman’s speech will precede the publication of her first book, Now What? On a Mission to Fix Broken Britain, and she has become a voice in the political landscape of late, arguing passionately against the ruling Conservative Party and its policies.
Vorderman will “bring her extensive experience in TV and frontline of social media campaigning to her address,” the fest said, and she will then be interviewed to discuss in further depth.
Vorderman made a name for herself when she landed a job as the maths genius on Channel 4’s Countdown, the only C4 show to have been airing since the network’s inception. She worked on the show for 26 years, making a name for herself for her exceptionally quick maths and simultaneously smooth presenting style.

Classic 1990s comedy chat show The Kumars is returning to television, here are the details.
In the 1990s, there were two shows which brought black British comedy into the mainstream. The first was The Real McCoy, a sketch show which launched the television careers of double acts Curtis Walker and Ishmael Thomas, and Llewella Gideon and Collette Johnson. Later series featured Robbie Gee, Eddie Nestor, Judith Jacob, Kulvinder Ghir, Meera Syal and the much missed Felix Dexter, amongst others.
The second series was sketch show Goodness Gracious Me, which premiered on the BBC in 1997. Taking an irreverent look at Asian-British experience, the series is probably best known for the now iconic ‘Going For An English’ sketch, which poked fun at the stereotypical British experience of going for a curry, but flipping races to an Indian family going out for bland English food.

No Spaced. No The League of Gentlemen. No Smack the Pony or Goodness Gracious Me or The Royle Family or Brass Eye, or Red Dwarf or Father Ted or anything that belongs to the last century (side note: the late 90s were an incredible time for UK comedy). These are the 40 finest British comedy TV shows that have arrived since the year 2000, as nominated by our writers. Add in your favourites below, and it’s a party.
What’s cheering about this lot, apart from the fact that as comedies, they should all technically cheer us up, is how different they are. There’s the surreal chaos of Year of the Rabbit, and the sweet warmth of Lovesick, the Pythonesque bonkersness of Yonderland, the satirical might of The Thick of It and much more. Something for everyone, you might say.

‘Lost’ Is Found
Specialty distributor, Trinity CineAsia is releasing China’s summer blockbuster “Lost in the Stars” in the U.K and Ireland on some 30 screens from Friday.
“I was fortunate to watch the film when it opened in China and once I saw it I just knew we had to have it,” said Cedric Behrel of Trinity CineAsia. “‘Lost In The Stars’ is a very clever, uncanny thrill of a ride that harks back to classic Hitchcock and any noteworthy thriller since – the master himself had in fact once optioned the rights to the same story. We organized the fastest turnaround premiere known to man and we’ve been delighted by the reactions to the early previews. It epitomizes the best of what new Chinese cinema can bring to audiences.”

The Last of Us has been called many things since it began airing eight weeks ago: heart-wrenching, exhilarating, groundbreaking, even. But one thing it is not, is scary. To categorise HBO’s TV adaptation of the hit video game as a horror would be a stretch. Tearful, tender moments far outweigh those of spine-tingling suspense, both in frequency and gravitas. But in its latest episode, The Last of Us finally veered into the horror genre that its zombie label appeared to promise – only there wasn’t a clicker in sight. Only a rejected man with a God complex.
The episode begins with Ellie (Bella Ramsay at her best) tending to an incapacitated Joel (Pedro Pascal) as he recovers from a serious stab wound. The two are hiding out in the basement of an abandoned house, but food is short. When Ellie goes out to hunt (and snags a deer on...

There’s a reason The Last of Us has been a favourite of LGBT+ gamers for a decade. When it comes to queer representation in mainstream video games – a sexually conservative branch of the arts, admittedly – The Last of Us stood head and shoulders above all its major rivals. In adapting the acclaimed post-apocaylptic story for HBO, showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have, thankfully, left its queer storylines intact.
Well, “intact” may be the wrong word. Four weeks ago, the series stunned viewers with a tearjerking episode called “Long, Long Time”, in which the story pivoted away from wandering protagonists Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) to focus on a 20-year love story between two middle aged men, Bill and Frank. The episode was deeply moving, and well put-together, but ended in the characters’ deaths. (This is the apocalypse after all.) Those fearing that this would be the...

Jamie Demetriou is so hot right now. From Stath Lets Flats to his scene-stealing cameo in Fleabag, the British-Cypriot comic’s fantastically strange style of comedy has not only won him Baftas, but also caught Hollywood’s eye: he starred in Apple TV Plus’s The Afterparty and is appearing Greta Gerwig’s forthcoming Barbie movie. Before Barbie, though: Demetriou’s biggest project yet, his Netflix musical comedy special A Whole Lifetime with Jamie Demetriou. The comic material is decidedly British, with a Netflix sheen: silly, but lacking the sharpness of Stath or his live sketch characters. It’s that attempt to straddle both worlds that leaves Demetriou’s comedy feeling surprisingly watered down.
In the opening scene, an adult Demetriou lies curled up in a ball, in utero. His life flashes before him in sketch form, the comic playing a lolloping child in a tight primary school uniform, an...

British television is brutal. The job security of actors, even in leading roles, is perilous. From the urtext, Spooks, where everyone from Keeley Hawes to Matthew Macfadyen cut their teeth, through to ITV’s returning Monday night drama, Unforgotten, writers have always been willing to throw their characters under the bus (sometimes literally). The challenge, then, is reacclimating audiences, once the dust settles, to a very different version of the same old show.
Back for its fifth season, Unforgotten is still reeling from the death of Nicola Walker’s Cassie Stuart. Di Sunny Khan (Sanjeev Bhaskar) is grieving, while incoming Dci Jessie James (Sinéad Keenan) is met by a rather cold shoulder. She doesn’t help herself: at home, her family life is falling apart, and the new gig couldn’t come at a worse time. Both she and Sunny are thinking of chucking it all in: Sunny is interrupted...

Since that finale, Unforgotten star Sanjeev Bhaskar has been bombarded with questions. “A lot of people on Twitter were saying to me, ‘Why did she have to die?’, ‘Why couldn’t she have just retired and lived with her boyfriend?’” He is talking, of course, about Dci Cassie Stuart – his indomitable sidekick in the cop drama, played by Nicola Walker, who was killed off in the fourth season’s final episode.
The pair were a detective duo with a special spark, the beating heart of the show since it first aired on ITV in 2015. A group of 700 Black, Asian, and minority ethnic TV workers have written to UK networks and streamers, including Netflix, the BBC and Sky, and the government demanding action on racial equality.
The letter, which Deadline has made available to read in full here, is the work of the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic TV Task Force, which has swelled to hundreds of members after being established shortly after the death of George Floyd and the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement.
Jacqueline Baker, one of the organizers of the letter, told Deadline that the group has held detailed discussions about life in the industry and discovered many shared experiences. “We really wanted to make a change, have an impact, and speak for the people who shared their experiences,” she said.
The four-page letter, delivered at midday today, added: “For many years we have stayed silent, due to fear of being blacklisted or totally dismissed.

British crime series from Inspector Morse to Midsomer Murders have long dominated linear television schedules in the UK and show no sign of slowing down. The man responsible for many of the latest gruesome hits is Chris Lang, creator of ITV’s Unforgotten and Innocent.
Lang tells Deadline why this new generation of police dramas is resonating with audiences and why he is interrupting this murder spree to focus on a number of more lighthearted, romantic comedy projects.
Unforgotten is currently in its third season and the Mainstreet Pictures-produced series is averaging 6M viewers a night, despite fierce competition from Aidan Turner’s sythe-wielding drama Poldark. The show follows two London detectives, played by The Split’s Nicola Walker and Sanjeev Bhaskar (Goodness Gracious Me) as they work together to solve cold case murders and disappearances. Goodness Gracious Me is back - over 13 years after it last graced our screens. Feeling old?

At its height, Goodness Gracious Me was a ground-breaking award-winner, but do you think the series still has a place in the modern comedy landscape?
