Director Fruit Chan struggled for years to direct his debut film, and could only do so by shooting the entire picture on bits and pieces of blank film that he had collected from the ends of reels.
Originally intended to premiere at the Hong Kong International Film Festival but was rejected by its selectors.
The film was selected as the Hong Kong entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 71st Academy Awards.
