When the PA accidentally erases the mayor's dinner from Tuesday (originally in red pen) on the calendar, she cleanly erases before rewriting it (in green pen). No day is visible whilst she is writing, however later in the scene it is clearly still for Tuesday and not for Wednesday. Later in the film, it appears under Wednesday (in green pen) and Tuesday is blank; later still, we see that both dates have the event written in their respective colors (and in very similar handwriting), with the red writing looking faded, as if only bits of it had been erased.
When the writer swears his oath, the clock shows 3:00. In the next shot, the clock shows 2:55.
When Joseph and Annie are sitting in front of the statue towards the beginning, Joseph's coffee switches hands between shots.
Just before the P.A. accidentally wipes the "Dinner w/ the Mayor" note from the whiteboard, it's clear that the penmanship is quite different from what Bill Macy's character had written just a moment before. Macy had written "Dinner" at an upward angle from left to right, but now the same word is written clearly straight across.
When Phillip Seymour Hoffman gets his finger caught on the fishing lure there is a close up of his finger, then a wide shot. In the close-up the rear hook of the lure is in his finger. In the wide shot the front hook is in his finger.
Price is seen to use two different models of cell phone; it's not unreasonable that someone using cell phones so much would carry more than one.
At 37 minutes, when Carla enters the Waterford Tavern to deliver Bob Barrenger's lunch, it appears she is wearing a brown pullover beneath her overcoat, and that when she enters Bob's hotel room, the pullover has been switched for a blue cardigan. However, it is actually a brown zip-front sweatshirt (hoody) that is zipped all the way up and then unzipped later, revealing a light blue knit top underneath. The brown sweatshirt and its hood are still fully visible in this scene. Later, when she leaves, she is just in the blue top and carrying the sweatshirt and coat.
When Joe White and Annie are in the restaurant and Joe is pondering over how to fix the movie, on the counter in front of him are some yellow note pages. When Annie accidentally hits his sore finger, a close-up of the yellow paper reveals it to be story notes for this actual film, State and Main (2000).
In the magazine article about Bob Barrenger that Carla is seen reading in the coffee shop, the first paragraph talks about how young Bob was an ugly kid in school who none of the girls liked. The paragraph ends with the ominous sentence "Perhaps that explains his current predicament." The very next paragraph, and indeed the rest of the article, pertains to President Clinton's decision to cut military ties to Indonesia and the ramifications thereof which appears to be from a news story relevant to the era of production.
When a bag full of money is delivered, one stack of bills inside it has "For Motion Picture Use Only" clearly visible at the top.
When Annie and Joseph are standing outside the book store in the rain, a cameraman, wearing a white raincoat, is reflected in the glass door behind Annie.
Near the end of the movie, a Boston Commuter Rail train appears in what is supposed to be Vermont.
Reflected in car window near end of the picture.
Ann Black says: "First organized fire department was on the border of Dalmatia and Sardinia in the year 642." This is completely false. Organized fire departments date back at least to ancient Egypt. The Roman Empire had a fire department in AD 6 from an idea of Marcus Egnatius Rufus. Additionally, Sardinia cannot have a border with anything, because it's an island.
Walt Price reads aloud from a brochure that the Old Mill was built in 1825. Then there's a tight shot of the brochure and you can see clearly that the text says the mill was built in 1838.
