In 2022, Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media revived the Scream franchise with a new entry (the fifth) that was a box office hit, earning almost $139 million at the global box office. Fourteen months later, Scream VI came along – and became an even bigger hit, pulling in almost $169 million at the global box office, a number that was up there with the series’ heyday, when the first Scream and Scream 2 made just over $170 million. (Scream 3 also made over $160 million – only Scream 4 failed to crack $100 million.) So, of course, the companies are moving full steam ahead with Scream 7. While the movie seemed, initially, to be on the fast-track to success, the track it’s on has turned out to be a shockingly bumpy ride.

"What's your favorite scary movie?" rasps an ominous voice on the phone, and depending on the receiver, the game of grisly cat-and-mouse amounts to different ends. The enduring legacy of the "Scream" franchise might have faltered as of late — especially with the controversies surrounding the yet-to-be-released "Scream 7" — but it is not an exaggeration to claim that the first few entries helped shape the rules of the slasher genre in mainstream horror. The original "Scream" is perfect for several reasons: it sets the tone with a truly effective opening scene, sustains the tension with a string of red herrings, and executes an unforgettably solid killer reveal right before the climax. As the story progressed over the years, the metatextual nature of the sequels gradually became an intrinsic part of the franchise's identity, with the recent "Scream VI" upending its established rules and taking a more location-independent approach to the mythos...

From its iconic characters to its lines that have entered the cultural zeitgeist, there are few horror franchises as influential as Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson’s Scream meta-slasher series. So let’s take a look back on all of the films and see where they stand – here are the Scream movies ranked!
6. Scream 3 (2000)
Ahhh the black sheep of the Scream franchise. Even as the clear worst entry, there’s still a certain charm to the third film. The Hollywood setting (dictated by the Studio after the Columbine shootings) really fits in well with the movie-centric series. Sure, the mismanaged killer and ghost mom portions are a little strange. Plus those Jay and Silent Bob cameos don’t exactly help matters. But this provides us Sidney Prescott, Gale Weathers, and Dewey Riley doing their thing. And, even if it doesn’t work, they connect it with all the films...

Laurie Metcalf and Eric McCormack have been tapped as guest stars in Season 2 of CBS’ “Elsbeth,” the mystery spinoff of “The Good Wife” and “The Good Fight” starring Carrie Preston as the de facto detective Elsbeth Tascioni.
Metcalf will appear in the eighth episode of the season as Regina Coburn, “the star of a police procedural who yearns for artistic fulfillment after playing a no-nonsense, hardened detective for two decades,” per CBS.
After the showrunner of Regina’s long-running series is “brutally murdered in his office in what appears to be the act of a disgruntled fan,” Regina goes toe-to-toe with Elsbeth as she becomes a prime suspect.
In the ninth episode of Season 2, McCormack will play Tom Murphy, “the charismatic and charming founder of Heiwa Zen Center, an upscale holistic wellness retreat that caters to the one-percent.”

Spyglass Media and Paramount Pictures once intended to make a Scream 7 that would have starred Scream (2022) and Scream VI leads Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, with Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon at the helm. But then Ortega allegedly asked for a substantial pay raise – and as we saw when Neve Campbell dropped out of Scream VI due to a pay dispute, these pay issues don’t tend to work out. Then Barrera was fired from the project after comments she made about the Israel-Hamas war didn’t go over well with executives at Spyglass. Landon dropped out the of the project soon after. So Scream 7 has been re-developed, Campbell has signed on to return as franchise heroine Sidney Prescott, back in the lead role – and her Scream (1996) co-star Matthew Lillard has confirmed that if he were asked to reprise the role of killer Stu Macher,...

One of the defining horror movies of the 1990s is Wes Craven’s Scream. It spawned a massive franchise, but that doesn’t change the fact that the sequels stopped making any sense a long time ago. Perhaps this issue would have been solved if the screenwriter had more time to work on Scream 2.
Why would characters from the ‘Scream’ movies keep using the Ghostface mask?
Part of the reason why people love 1996’s Scream so much is its twist ending. We learn that the masked slasher Ghostface was two killers working together. They are both disposed of, and the audience goes home feeling good. Roll credits.
In Scream 2, someone takes on the Ghostface identity and starts offing college students. It feels a little odd that someone would want to be Ghostface, considering that the original Ghostface murderers were killed. Notably, the villain from Scream 2 also dies horribly.

“Monster” Season 3 has added Laurie Metcalf, Tom Hollander, and Olivia Williams to its cast, Variety has learned exclusively.
The trio join previously announced cast member Charlie Hunnam, who will star as Ed Gein in the next season of the Netflix anthology series. According to sources, Metcalf will play Gein’s mother, Augusta, while Hollander will play Alfred Hitchcock and Williams will play Alma Reville, Hitchcock’s wife.
Given that Gein served as one of the inspirations for Norman Bates and Hitchcock’s film “Psycho,” it would appear Season 3 of the hit Netflix anthology will delve into how Gein’s crimes influenced the film and the novel upon which the film was based.
Gein became infamous in the 1950s when authorities discovered that he not only had killed multiple people, but had dug up graves from a cemetery near his home and fashioned all manner of household items and clothing from human remains.

There was a lot that went wrong with "Joker: Folie à Deux," the disastrous sequel of 2019's "Joker" that's set to make only a fraction of the first film's box office jackpot. But overshadowed by the movie's sluggish pacing and depressing subject matter is another minor disappointment: the lack of Justin Theroux. He's a great actor who helped make masterpieces like "The Leftovers" and "Mulholland Drive" shine, and he appeared briefly in "Joker" as the actor Ethan Chase, who Arthur watches on the TV as he appears on Murray Franklin's talk-show.
Is Theroux the key ingredient to making sure a "Joker" movie reaches a billion dollars at the box office? Probably not, but a little sprinkling of Theroux always helps. For "Folie à Deux," Director Todd Phillips intended to give Theroux another cameo, this time in a trailer for the in-universe movie made about the Joker's actions in the first film.

Spanning six live-action films, a television series, and even a franchise within a franchise, the “Scream” films have been scaring audiences since 1996.
The franchise was created by Kevin Williamson, who wrote “Scream,” “Scream 2” and “Scream 4.” The first four films were directed by legendary horror master Wes Craven.
Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin took over directing duties on the latest two films (Craven died in 2015) while Guy Busick and James Vanderbilt replaced Williamson as screenwriters. Williamson now makes his “Scream” directorial debut with the upcoming “Scream 7,” which brings Neve Campbell back to the franchise and will open in 2026.

Fans of the Scream franchise have no reason to be scared — the seventh installment is officially on Paramount’s release calendar.
Returning franchise star Neve Campbell and director Kevin Williamson announced Tuesday on social media that Scream VII will hit theaters on Feb. 27, 2026.
Campbell all but rescued the revived franchise from extinction earlier this year when announcing she would return to the world of Scream after sitting out Scream VI over a salary dispute with producer Spyglass.
When announcing the news, Campbell revealed that in addition to her return, franchise godfather Williamson would direct. Williamson is the creator of the franchise, penning the script to Wes Craven’s 1996 original, as well as Scream 2 and Scream 4. Guy Busick, who wrote 2022’s Scream and Scream VI, will take over writing duties from James Vanderbilt, who is busy directing the feature Nuremberg.

Just in time for Judgment Day, Netflix has a new installment in the “Terminator” franchise for fans of the iconic, long-running sci-fi action franchise. This time, however, you won’t see any familiar faces — the series is animated. However, you might recognize some of the voices, so we’ve put together a handy guide to the “Terminator Zero” cast.
You won’t see Sarah Connor, Kyle Reese or Arnold’s T-800 in this story — it introduces a new timeline and all new characters to go with it. Set in 1997, Japan, “Terminator Zero” focuses on a developer named Malcolm Lee, who is hard at work on another AI system to compete with Skynet and save the human race. Naturally, a Terminator unit is sent back in time to target him and his three children, while a soldier from the future is sent back with a mission of her own.

Kevin Williamson is keeping busy like it’s 1998! Best known for writing Scream, Scream 2, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and The Faculty, producing Halloween H20 (while doing uncredited work on the script), and creating Dawson’s Creek, Williamson is currently gearing up to direct his second feature film, Scream 7. Back in February, we heard that he and his producer banner, Outerbanks Entertainment, were developing four major projects as part of an overall deal with Universal Television. One of those TV series projects, a crime drama called The Waterfront, was picked up by the Netflix streaming service back in May. Now The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Holt McCallany (The Iron Claw) and Maria Bello (A History of Violence) are set to star in that series!

There’s always been something about Only Murders in the Building that’s felt vaguely familiar — and not just because it stars the superior two-thirds of the Three Amigos.
This sounds kind of crazy, and it probably is, but the popular Hulu series isn’t so dissimilar from one of the beloved horror movie franchises of all-time: Scream, but repackaged as a cozy mystery show that plays well with Boomers who loved Murder, She Wrote and had never heard of Selena Gomez before.

So Scream 7 has been re-developed, Campbell has signed on to return as franchise heroine Sidney Prescott – and while Sidney only had a supporting role in Scream (2022), Campbell has confirmed that she is the lead character in this reworked version of Scream 7.

Sequels tend to rub people the wrong way. Sure, audiences will go see them, but they'll certainly bemoan their initial announcements and speculate about their quality before seeing a single frame. There's an inherent, deafening cynicism. Meanwhile, if you talk to hardcore horror fans, the sequel is given far more goodwill. A variety of major horror franchises have seen many sequels prolong their legacies and become part of the genre's fabric. Though these sequels are far from perfect, they are never boring. In fact, horror sequels tend to up the ante following the original film's success, leading to massive swings that are rejected by the masses but are wholly embraced by the more open-minded horror fanbase.
Unfortunately, this is all difficult to translate in the era of rating aggregates like Rotten Tomatoes. Yes, despite the last few years revealing its inherently broken system, the Warner Bros. Discovery and NBCUniversal-owned...

Wes Craven's 1996 film "Scream" famously rebooted the entire horror genre for a new generation. The slasher glut of the 1980s had decidedly come to an end, and horror tropes migrated over to respectable Hollywood serial killer dramas; "The Silence of the Lambs" led the charge in this regard. "Scream" revitalized the slasher genre, but in a way that allowed it to be self-aware. The characters in "Scream" were all well-versed in horror films of the '70s and '80s, and recognized when they were in a slasher situation. Sidney (Neve Campbell) openly criticized uncreative slasher movies in dialogue, and the movie's masked killer would quiz his victims over the phone. If they forgot that Jason Voorhees wasn't the killer in the first "Friday the 13th" movie -- it was his mother Pamela -- then he would be justified in attacking.

It was a mother of a season of murder mayhem marked by beautiful bouquets of bloody roses that struck fear into the hearts of the PLLs throughout Pretty Little Liars: Summer School.
After such an incredible first episode, the season took some interesting liberties with the kill count. Still, in retrospect, it successfully kept audiences in the dark and on their toes as much as it did the pretty little liars.
The wait was certainly worth it with an ending that smacked almost entirely of Scream 2 but did it in a way that felt more real and with much higher stakes as it ended with five times the final girls and more motivation than viewers might've been able to follow.
If you were a little lost or didn't catch everything that happened in the jam-packed final episode of the series, we have you covered with the ending explained for Pretty Little Liars: Summer School.

Spoilers for "Scream 3" to follow.
Although many "Scream" fans will insist there's no such thing as a bad "Scream" movie, Rotten Tomatoes certainly disagrees. The original "Scream" and "Scream 2" were well received by critics, while "Scream" 4, "Scream" (2022), and "Scream VI" all landed in the 60-80% range, but "Scream 3" is certified rotten. With only 41% of critics leaving positive reviews, and 38% of audiences saying they enjoyed the film, "Scream 3" is widely considered the worst entry in the entire slasher franchise. As the Rt critics' consensus reads: "Despite some surprising twists, 'Scream 3' sees the franchise falling back on the same old horror formulas and cliches it once hacked and slashed with postmodern abandon."
I, for one, have always appreciated "Scream 3," even if large sections don't quite land for me. The film works best when it's focusing on Sidney (Neve Campbell) and her attempts to move...

Don't call it a slow burn, but compared to the rest of the season, Pretty Little Liars: Summer School Season 1 Episode 8 made good on it's promise of a bloody killer season.
Up until now, the season had been inconsistent with its killings, with no rhyme or reason behind the chosen victims, and many of the episodes featured no blood other than that of the red on Bloody Rose's gauzed face.
That all ended abruptly in this finale of twisty turns and revelations that frankly lean pretty closely to the same plot as Scream 2 in some rather blatant ways that we will call "heavily inspired."
As many viewers may have suspected, Kelly was thankfully not dead in the water as was suspected at the end of the previous episode.

After multiple attempts at kick-starting new trilogies of films have failed, the live-action Terminator film series is, understandably, taking a bit of a break… but the franchise is set to continue with an eight-episode anime series called Terminator Zero, which is coming our way from Japanese animation studio Production Ig and the Netflix streaming service. Terminator Zero is set to start streaming on August 29th – and with that date swiftly approaching, it has been revealed at the Next on Netflix: Animation event in Los Angeles that Timothy Olyphant provides the voice of the Terminator in this series!
Terminator Zero is set in the established Terminator universe but centers on new characters. Mattson Tomlin, who worked on the screenplays for The Batman and its upcoming sequel, is writer and showrunner on this series, which has the following synopsis: 2022: A future war has raged for decades between the few human survivors...

“You killed my son! And, now, I kill you and I can’t think of anything more rational.”
Compared to traditional slasher fare, there are many things that set the Scream franchise apart: multiple survivors, metatextual commentary, Matthew Lillard, the list goes on and on. But one of the most unique aspects of this beloved string of films is the fact that anyone and everyone could be the killer. With no supernatural elements or sub-human weapon-wielders, only a confirmed kill can eliminate a character from the suspect list. Many charismatic villains have donned the ominous Ghostface mask, but none so complex as the one revealed in Scream 2. Running on vengeance, grief, and motherly love, Mrs. Loomis (Laurie Metcalf) manipulates a psychotic young man and picks up the knife herself in an elaborate plan to seek revenge for the death of her son.

We learned earlier this week that “Hannibal” creator Bryan Fuller is no longer the showrunner of A24 and Peacock’s Friday the 13th TV series “Crystal Lake,” with A24 choosing to “go a different way with the material.” What does that mean? It means A24 is still planning on bringing a Friday the 13th series to life, but the overall vision will likely change.
Kevin Williamson (Scream, Sick) had been on board to write an episode of the “Crystal Lake” series, and Williamson took to Twitter today to tease some of those original plans.
Williamson writes, “Bummin’ hard, so sorry I won’t be a part of what would have been an epic Bryan Fuller show. Your pilot was so beautifully realized. A gorgeous portrait of a mother unraveling in her grief. Not to mention bloody horrific!”
He adds, “I was so looking forward to our hour long chase episode!

We horror fans are a highly opinionated bunch. But when you make your career and reputation around the genre – both in music and film – it’s even more elevated. Take Rob Zombie, who has never been one to shy away from his opinions on horror cinema both brilliant and whatever Gus Van Sant was trying to pull with Psycho. Mr. Robert Zombie is certainly no stranger to directing crap of his own, but he definitely has some choice words for some flicks that he thinks can (thunder) kiss off.
Ranking at #1 for Rob Zombie is Dracula 2000, particularly calling out Gerard Butler…even if he can’t remember his name. “This may be the worst movie ever committed to film. I found every single thing about it to be offensive, from top to bottom. You just stare at it in shock…Dracula is a tough character to play, you’ve...

Spoilers: In addition to Scream 2, this article will have spoilers for every other movie in the franchise.
We all know that one of the big draws of the Scream franchise is Ghostface’s identity. But some are a lot harder to figure out who is behind the mask than others. The big surprise in 1996’s original wasn’t that it was Billy or Stu, it was that it was Billy and Stu. And nobody was surprised when freaky Tarantino film student Mickey turned out to be one of the killers in Scream 2. The same could be said of Debbie Salt – after all, why put a prominent actress like Laurie Metcalf in a seemingly thankless role? But Metcalf thinks her Scream 2 reveal still ranks as the best in the franchise’s history.
Speaking with Collider, Laurie Metcalf stated bluntly, “I think in the Scream movies, my character has the best reveal.

The series about the lives of high school students ran for exactly ten years – from 1990 to 2000. The most successful seasons of Beverly Hills, 90210 were watched by 14.5 million viewers in the US alone, and by the same number of fans around the world.
During this time, the main characters evolved from shallow high school students to complex personalities, dealing not only with common teenage problems, but also with more serious issues such as alcoholism and domestic violence.

Radio Silence Talk ‘Abigail,’ Their ‘Scream’ Exit and Trying to Make ‘The Shining’ Elevators Jealous
Abigail has been a long time coming for Radio Silence, the filmmaking collective consisting of co-directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin/Tyler Gillett and producer Chad Villella.
Coming off of their successful relaunch of the Scream franchise in 2022, the team strived to make another film before they returned to Ghostface. One idea was a feature now known as Abigail, but they ultimately ended up shooting Scream VI instead, as Scream rights holder Spyglass Media was eager to keep the momentum going. And together, they did just that, as Scream VI went on to set domestic box office records for the franchise.
Still, Abigail never left Radio Silence’s minds. As they were making Scream VI, the team was also preparing to do the ballerina vampire pic immediately after they finished promoting Scream VI’s March 2023 release. After all, they’d just put out two Scream movies within a 14-month period, so it’s...

The Sound and Vision of this week might be about George A. Romero, the director who created the modern zombie, but we start with a different icon. Wes Craven, the King of slasher movies, was on a roll in the nineties after his career was revitalized with the meta-horror of Scream. A sequel had to follow, and Scream 2 was the hottest ticket in town. Enter The Misfits, who themselves had a second wind under an iteration without the infamous Glenn Danzig. Update: Variety has confirmed that Courteney Cox is in talks to join Neve Campbell in Scream 7. They didn’t mention Patrick Dempsey in their report.
The original article (published March 25th) follows:
So now Scream 7 has been re-developed, and it...

Wes Craven, director of the first four films in the Scream franchise, passed away in 2015. So when Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media teamed up to revive the franchise with the new sequel that was released in 2022, the directing duo of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett took the helm. They then returned to direct Scream VI the following year, with both of their contributions to the franchise centering on sisters Samantha and Tara Carpenter, played by Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega. During a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett confirmed that they had been planning to return to direct Scream 7 and complete a Carpenter sisters trilogy… but they mistakenly thought they could fit the production of their Universal Monsters movie Abigail (formerly known as Dracula’s Daughter) in between the making of Scream VI and Scream 7. Turns out, Spyglass wanted to get moving on Scream 7 sooner than their schedules allowed,...

The television franchise that began with Pretty Little Liars on Freeform (starting back when the channel was known as ABC Family) and continued with two short-lived spin-offs on Freeform – Ravenswood and Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists – moved over to the Max streaming service in 2022 with a new series called Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, which leaned further into horror territory. A second season of the new series, now titled Pretty Little Liars: Summer School, is set to reach Max sometime in spring 2024, and now Cosmopolitan has unveiled a batch of images from the season (including a shot of a masked slasher) that the creators say was inspired by classic sequels Friday the 13th Part 2, Halloween II, and Scream 2!
This take on the Pretty Little Liars concept was created by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon Bring. It focuses on “new characters in the new fictional town of Millwood, Pa...

The slashing that began with “Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin” will continue in Max’s upcoming “Pretty Little Liars: Summer School,” and Cosmopolitan unveiled first look images at the upcoming second season that promises to go bigger and badder on the slasher sequel mayhem.
“Pretty Little Liars: Summer School” is set to return later this Spring on Max, with first look images below.
Co-Creators Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (“Riverdale,” “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”) and Lindsay Calhoon Bring (“Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”) co-executive produced and wrote the new series.
Season 1 picked up 20 years after a series of tragic events almost ripped the blue-collar town of Millwood apart. Now, in present day, a disparate group of teen girls — a brand-new set of Little Liars — find themselves tormented by an unknown Assailant and made to pay for the secret sin committed by their parents two decades ago…as well as their own.
