Hugh Grant’s Missed Harry Potter Role (Photo Credit – YouTube/Facebook)
Hugh Grant might be the quintessential charming leading man known for roles in Notting Hill and Bridget Jones’s Diary, but did you know he almost joined the Harry Potter universe? Producers initially eyed Grant for the role of Gilderoy Lockhart in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. But instead of donning Hogwarts robes, Grant stuck to what he knew best — being the charming, witty love interest.
At the heart of this casting near-miss was a scheduling clash. Grant had to pass on The Chamber of Secrets because of his commitment to Two Weeks Notice, a 2002 rom-com alongside Sandra Bullock. Talk about a missed magical opportunity. Grant’s agent reportedly gave a different reason for his departure from the project, which sparked some behind-the-scenes confusion. Meanwhile, Harry Potter director Chris Columbus denied Hugh Grant’s potential involvement. The...

Though Venom: The Last Dance performed a lot better than previous Ssu movies Madame Web and Morbius, it still ended up finishing its theatrical run as the lowest-grossing film of the Venom trilogy.
The Kelly Marcel-directed superhero flick took in just under $140 million domestically and another $333 million from overseas markets for a global total of around $472 million. With a reported budget of around $120 million, this is far from a bad result for Sony Pictures, but it doesn't come close to the $850 million the original Venom made in 2018, and also falls just short of Let There Be Carnage's $500 million.
This was Sony's final Venom movie (supposedly), but the studio is rumoured to have big plans for the villainous Knull and Agent Venom.
The Last Dance hits Digital platforms this week.

Julia Roberts has been acting for decades. She has stood tall and watched different phases of the industry come and go while maintaining her relevance as an icon. However, this naturally did not come easy to the actress. Although she managed to start her career off with excellent films, her journey was much like the film industry, going through high and low points.

From director Simon Otto, the animated feature That Christmas is based on a trilogy of books by the writer of Notting Hill, Love, Actually and more — Richard Curtis.
The title recalls a particularly memorable Christmas for Santa Claus (voiced by Brian Cox) as he recalls having to brave a blizzard with only one of his reindeer Dasher (Guz Khan) in order to deliver some much-needed gifts to the residents of Wellington-on-Sea, who become separated in many ways partially due to the storm. An ensemble cast weaves together in the Christmas story that also features the voices of Fiona Shaw, Bill Nighy, Jodie Whittaker and more.
Ed Sheeran wrote a new original song for the film “Under the Tree,” not to be confused with another festive needle drop, Kelly Clarkson’s “Underneath the Tree.” Find the full That Christmas soundtrack below.

What is a Christmas movie? There’s two possible answers to that question. It can be a Christmas-themed movie—with all the merriment of the festival. But it can also be a movie that is set around the time of Christmas, say a Die Hard, for example, or the very recent Terrifier 3. We are, of course, here to talk about That Christmas, Netflix’s latest Christmas offering—perhaps the first of this season. Directed by Simon Otto (known for his remarkable work as the animator in the How to Train Your Dragon franchise), it does fall under the Christmas-themed movie category, and despite being primarily for kids, it does boast of a stellar voice cast that has names like Brian Cox, Fiona Shaw, Jodie Whittaker, and Bill Nighy. Thanks to someone like Otto at the helm of it, the animation is vibrant and colorful, just the kind of thing...

For animation vet Simon Otto (the “How to Train Your Dragon” franchise), directing Netflix’s “That Christmas” was like making the ultimate Richard Curtis film — with Richard Curtis. The fact that it was animated was a breakthrough for both; Otto had never directed a feature before and Curtis was new to the medium. Their collaboration resulted in a whimsical holiday treat.
“That Christmas” explores how a blizzard turns the holiday upside down in the hamlet of Wellington-on-Sea, with Brian Cox’s Santa as narrator. Curtis adapted his YA novels with Peter Souter, but worked closely with Otto in getting the most out of his story for animation. It was produced by Locksmith Animation, with Dneg doing the animation.
“It was a journey for both of us,” Otto told IndieWire. “The idea of ‘Love Actually’ for kids was thrown around. It has flavors of it, but it’s not ‘Love Actually.

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week: Take That's Happy Now, (co-)directed by Richard Curtis. Richard Curtis, who has written the screenplay to the new recent Netflix animation That Christmas, is a household name. He is the rare screenwriter whose name people actually could know, because of series like Mr. Bean and Blackadder, films like Notting Hill and Four Weddings and a Funeral, and the self-directed Love Actually. Still, the sole music video he directed (co-directed with Tom Harper) might need some context for the non-Brits among us. The first thing that needs introduction is the band Take That, a british boy band of teen heartthrobs from the nineties that never made it...

Notting Hill screenwriter Richard Curtis has, in the past, reunited the cast of Love Actually for short British TV films to benefit the annual Red Nose Day charity. But nothing with Notting, and not for lack of trying.
The screenwriter says in a new interview with IndieWire that Notting Hill star Julie Roberts nixed a potential reunion when she learned that the “mini sequel” would have her Anna Scott character divorcing Hugh Grant’s William Thacker.
Though Curtis says even he is not interested in full-length sequels to the films – “I actually did four Red Nose Days and Comic Relief,” he says. “We did those mini sequels to Love Actually and those satisfied me” – a mini-Notting Hill reunion had been discussed.
“I tried doing one with Notting Hill,” he says in the interview, “where they were going to get divorced and Julia [Roberts] thought that was a very poor idea.

While House of the Dragon’s Otto Hightower is the symbol of nobility and Westerosi politics, actor Rhys Ifans, who portrays him is reportedly a clown on set. Co-stars such as Milly Alcock and Fabien Frankel detailed how they hate to be in a scene with Ifans as he tries to break them from character every time, sometimes without even saying anything.
The actor seems to have made this a habit as actress Julia Roberts also recounted struggling to keep it together while sharing the screen with The Amazing Spider-Man star. The two worked together on the romantic comedy Notting Hill, which also starred Hugh Grant in the lead role.

A Notting Hill sequel never made it to the big screen due, in part, to Julia Roberts, according to screenwriter Richard Curtis.
The writer for the beloved 1999 rom-com recently told IndieWire while promoting his new Netflix animated film, That Christmas, that Roberts wasn’t a big fan of the sequel script, which saw her character Anna Scott divorcing Hugh Grant’s character William Thacker.
When Curtis was asked if he would like to do any follow-ups to his past films, he said, “I don’t think so. I actually did four Red Nose Days and Comic Relief. Julia Roberts Turned Down a ‘Notting Hill’ Reunion Due to a Divorce Plot, Says Writer Richard Curtis
“Notting Hill” screenwriter Richard Curtis is detailing why there hasn’t been a sequel: And it turns out Julia Roberts part of the reason why.
Curtis told IndieWire while promoting his upcoming Netflix animated film “That Christmas,” which premieres December 4, that he wanted to do a “mini sequel” to the beloved 1999 rom-com as part of Red Nose Day. However, Roberts had issues with the script idea, which involved her A-list actress character Anna Scott divorcing bookstore owner William Thacker, played by Curtis’ longtime collaborator Hugh Grant.

Hugh Grant‘s career has entered what the actor himself coined the “freak show stage” of his career. From the oh-so-tiny Oompa Loompa in Wonka to the short-lived Edward Keplinger in The Regime, the seasoned British actor has departed from his romantic lead typecast. For his most recent leading role as Mr. Reed in Heretic, Grant traps two young Mormon missionaries in his basement game of faith and horror. Green-haired, dancing orange man aside, Mr. Reed is his most extreme role to date. Playing a man who traps women in cages is as large a departure as he can take, especially when his origins are largely rooted as charming leads in romantic comedies. And not just any romantic leads. Grant has starred in some of the most iconic romantic comedies: Edward Farris in Ang Lee’s Sense and Sensibility, William Thacker in Richard Curtis‘ Notting Hill, Charles in Four Weddings and a Funeral...

Breaking the fourth wall in film is both a radical concept and one that's readily familiar to audiences, even if they don't know the phrase "breaking the fourth wall." Acknowledging the audience in some form or fashion has happened in everything from Disney animation (as when Scar objects passionately to hearing the song "It's a Small World" at one point in "The Lion King") to '80s-era teen comedies to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But every so often, audiences are thrown for a true loop when the fourth wall, that demarcation point between the big screen and those watching what's displayed there, is demolished so swiftly and inexplicably that there's nothing left but the rubble. 20 years ago, one such moment happened in a mainstream, big-budget sequel that was established to take place in some facsimile of the real world without automatically occupying space in our real world. The film is 2004's excellent "Ocean's Twelve,...

Julia Roberts’ fruitful career is composed mainly of wholesome films featuring a variety of roles. Although she never shied away from doing romantic scenes and such, the actress sees to it that her portfolio mostly revolves around family-friendly movies.

There’s nothing wrong with this, of course – actors are free to choose the kind of projects they want to involve themselves with, but Roberts’ reason for refusing to bare it all on screen is because of motherhood.
Motherhood Influenced Julia Roberts’ Choices in Films
Back in 2009, actress Julia Roberts opened up about her firm choice of declining movies with explicit scenes that would require her to take off her clothes. She said during the premiere of her movie Duplicity at Leicester Square via Daily Mail,
If you are going ask me to do it, you have to expect it to be toned down.

Sorry, Notting Hill fans. Actor Hugh Grant is not a big fan of William Thacker. The actor, 64, described his character in the 1999 romantic comedy as “despicable” thanks to one scene the women in his life have asked him about for years.

Grant revisited Notting Hill, the 1999 rom-com directed by Roger Michell, during a video interview with Vanity Fair. In it, he revealed whenever he watches the movie, one question comes to mind.
“Whenever I’m flicking the channels at home after a few drinks, and this comes up, I just think, ‘Why doesn’t my character have any balls?’” Grant said of William “Will” Thacker.

The actress rose to stardom with her unforgettable role in Pretty Woman and has ever since reigned both in romantic comedies and dramatic roles like Notting Hill, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Steel Magnolias, and Erin Brokovich.
Ever since Roberts skyrocketed to fame in the ‘80s, her dating life has been a bit like a rom-com plot itself. Fans followed her romances with some of Hollywood’s biggest names. Roberts has been married twice, although her first marriage was short-lived, her second marriage with Danny Moder has been the real love story for over two decades now. Why Did Julia Roberts Turn Down A Major Hollywood Rom-Com? (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Julia Roberts, the rom-com queen, reportedly passed on The Proposal. The movie that gave us Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock’s epic chemistry could’ve had Julia in the lead. But she said no. Bullock took it from there, turning it into a rom-com classic.
Here’s the kicker: Roberts didn’t ghost the rom-com world by choice. “If I had read something at the Notting Hill or My Best Friend’s Wedding level, I would’ve done it,” she spilled to The New York Times. Basically, she has been holding out for that perfect, laugh-out-loud script—and trust us, the wait has been real.

While Hugh Grant has made his career playing the male protagonist in romantic comedies, the actor is currently showing audiences a new side of himself in the horror film Heretic. In this A24 film, he plays against type as the villain of the movie. In his review for Heretic, our own Chris Bumbray said, “It’s certainly a far cry from the stammering rom-com roles that made him such a heartthrob […] He radiates fiendishly clever intelligence, and he’s given a sadistic streak I didn’t see coming, which feels bold for a mainstream horror flick.”
As the trailer for his return to the Bridget Jones franchise drops, Grant also reflects on a past role of his where he didn’t find the character terribly affable. Hugh Grant is known to not be the biggest fan of his past movies, but he has specific issues with his character in the 1999 rom-com Notting Hill.
The actor recently partook in Vanity Fair’s “Scene Selection,” where he shared why he thinks his character William Thacker is “despicable.” Grant stars opposite Julia Roberts in the film.
“Whenever I’m flicking the channels at home after a few drinks and this comes up, I just think, ‘Why doesn’t my character have any balls?'” he said. “There’s a scene in this film where she’s in my house and the paps come to the front door and ring the bell and I think I just let her go past me and open the door. That’s awful.”
The rom-com classic, directed by Roger Michell, sees famous actress Anna Scott (Roberts) fall in love with William, the owner of a bookstore in Notting Hill.

“Love Actually” director Richard Curtis said his longtime leading man Hugh Grant is probably having an easier time playing recent “psychopath” roles than in the romantic comedies they used to collaborate on.
Curtis referenced Grant’s recent roles, such as his sinister, older gentleman in his latest film “Heretic.” “With regard to Hugh now, no acting required. He was always a scoundrel,” he said in an interview with the AP out Thursday. “He had to work harder in my movies when he was pretending to be nice. Now he’s a self-evident psychopath.”
In his latest horror-thriller, Grant plays Mr. Reed, a reclusive Englishman. When approached by two young female Mormon missionaries at his doorstep, the trio engage in a conversation about faith that spins into something much more violent and perverse.

The A24 horror film Heretic, from the writing and directing duo of Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, received a wide theatrical release last week, and so far has made about $16 million at the global box office. The budget came in under $10 million, so it’s doing okay – and Beck and Woods have ideas for follow-up films that wouldn’t be direct sequels, but “spiritual sequels.”
Hugh Grant – whose credits include Notting Hill, Love Actually, Wonka, and Unfrosted – stars in Heretic, which has the following synopsis: Two young missionaries are forced to prove their faith when they knock on the wrong door and are greeted by a diabolical Mr. Reed (Grant), becoming ensnared in his deadly game of cat-and-mouse. Grant is joined in the cast of Heretic by Chloe East (The Fabelmans) and Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets) as the missionaries. (You can watch our interviews with them Here.) Venom: The Last Dance may not have made as big a splash at the box office as the previous movies in the franchise, but the final part of Sony Pictures' trilogy is proving difficult to knock off the top spot.
The Last Dance took in $16.2 million from 3,905 North American theaters, which was enough to fend off competition from A24’s horror thriller Heretic and Lionsgate’s family friendly The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.
The studio's latest Ssu movie - which sits at 41% on Rotten Tomatoes - has now grossed $279.4 million overseas and $394.2 million globally on a relatively modest budget of $120 million.
This might well be the last Venom movie, but a recent rumor claimed that Sony is developing an Agent Venom film.
In the comics, Agent Venom was Peter Parker's former bully turned friend Eugene "Flash" Thompson, who bonded with the Venom Symbiote after losing his legs in service of his country.

“Venom: The Last Dance” is looming over the domestic box office in its third weekend of release. The third and final installment in Sony’s comic book trilogy has added $16.2 million from 3,905 North American theaters, down 37% from the prior frame and enough to lead over two newcomers, A24’s horror thriller “Heretic” and Lionsgate’s family friendly “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.”
Although those new releases weren’t able to topple “Venom 3” from No. 1, they opened on the higher end of expectations, thanks to word-of-mouth and the otherwise desolate movie theater landscape. Hollywood mostly avoided the post-election weekend out of concern that people wouldn’t be paying attention to anything other than the presidential race. As a result, overall domestic box office revenues remain down more than 11% from 2023 and nearly 27% from 2019, according to Comscore.
“Heretic,” featuring “Notting Hill” star Hugh Grant playing against type as a villain, notched third place with $11 million from 3,221 venues.

Almost three years have gone by since Joshua Oppenheimer, the director behind the documentaries The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence, announced that he was teaming up with Neon to make his narrative feature debut with The End, “a golden-age musical about the last human family.” That film went into production last year, with a cast that includes Tilda Swinton (We Need to Talk About Kevin), Michael Shannon (The Shape of Water), George MacKay (1917), Moses Ingram (The Tragedy of Macbeth), Bronagh Gallagher (Pulp Fiction), Tim McInnerny (Notting Hill), Lennie James (The Walking Dead), and Danielle Ryan (The Silencing). Now it’s making the festival rounds, building up to a December theatrical release. The film is scheduled to start playing in New York and Los Angeles on December 6th, with the limited release expanding on December 13th. Sony Pictures made it clear that Venom: The Last Dance would be the final part of a trilogy, and while the movie did appear to wrap-up Eddie Brock and his Symbiote pal's story, we may now know how the studio is planning to keep the franchise going.

In the comics, Agent Venom was Peter Parker's former bully turned friend Eugene "Flash" Thompson, who bonded with the Venom Symbiote after losing his legs in service of his country. Tony Revolori currently plays Flash in the Spider-Man movies, but The Last Dance may have given us some idea of how Sony intends to introduce a whole new take on the character.

October ended up being a bit of a bust relative to very high expectations, so far as the overall box office was concerned. "Joker: Folie a Deux" bombed in spectacular fashion, starting things off on a low note. "Venom: The Last Dance" certainly didn't bomb, but it also didn't make nearly as much as the first two entries in that trilogy did either. Once again, though, horror was here to save the day as "Terrifier 3" shocked the industry with a killer overperformance, while "Smile 2" cemented Paramount's budding new franchise. So, can a villain turn by Hugh Grant help keep the horror strong in November as A24's "Heretic" hits theaters?

Hugh Grant has starred in many iconic roles over the years. Being an icon in the world of rom-coms, he has starred in more than a handful throughout his career. When Two and a Half Men needed a new lead after Charlie Sheen’s famous meltdown, they had a bold idea: bring in Hugh Grant. Imagine the posh Brit taking on Sheen’s crazy role—an odd but tempting offer, especially at $1M per episode. But in true Grant fashion, he politely turned it down, surprising everyone.

Sony Pictures has released a new TV spot for Venom: The Last Dance, and it gives us a first official look at the team of Symbiotes that assembles towards the end of the movie to battle the Xenophage.
Though some of these Symbiotes are named - Juno Temple's Doctor Payne becomes Agony, for example - others seem to be amalgamations of characters from the comics, or possibly brand-new creations. One does definitely seem to be based on Toxin, however, and the final two appear to be versions of Phage and Lasher.
Check out the new teaser below.
The review embargo for The Last Dance lifted last week, and the critical consensus was not overly positive. Though some are referring to this final instalment in the franchise as the best of the trilogy, the movie held at 37% on Rotten Tomatoes for a while before rising to 39% based on 158 reviews.

Hugh Grant established himself as one of the most popular romantic heroes with repeated hits in the genre. However, after many years of dabbling in different genres, the actor delivered a diabolical performance in an unexpected field.
The Notting Hill lead’s performance as the evil Scottish man in Heretic shocked audiences and critics alike due to his chilling performance. One would believe the actor would be an avid fan of the genre but that’s far from reality. Grant revealed he had been terrified of the genre ever since he watched The Wizard of Oz.
