September 1939. Polish army in retreat. Young cavalry officer Wladek, his corporal Kuras and several men are due to escort secret government courier. Netherless Wladek's squad receives an order to make a suicidal mission.
Wladek joins the communist partisan group, defending Polish citizens in villages near Zamosc, persecuted and expelled from their homes by the Germans. Kuras' daughter Bozenka disappears, taken by the Germans.
Wladek returns to Warsaw, and learns that he's going to be a father. Meanwhile, German Gestapo undertakes a big operation, striking a heavy blow against Polish patriots and underground organizations.
