The Whip opens with Emily (Meg Fozzard), who suffers from a brain injury, and her sister Sadie who cares for her full time, suffering through a benefits interview. And I do mean suffering as the interviewer, somewhere between disinterested and outright hostile, gets Emily’s name wrong and asks if she has mobility issues as she sits there in her wheelchair. Despite a host of issues stemming from her injury, including short-term memory issues, shaky balance confining her to a wheelchair, and hands that shake, she’s deemed fit for work. A forgone conclusion given the government’s “Putting Ability Back into Disability” slogan for revamping the National Health Service.
Elsewhere, Michael Harrington is trying to sell these new policies to voters, and they are not buying it.

David Sanborn, the six time Grammy-winning alto saxophonist who played at Woodstock, composed music for the Lethal Weapon movies, played in the SNL and Late Night with David Letterman bands and worked with everyone from Stevie Wonder to David Bowie, died Sunday afternoon, May 12th, after an extended battle with prostate cancer with complications. He Was 78.
Sanborn’s music is often described “smooth jazz,” but he reportedly rejected that characterization, and one can see why. His lively, iconic sax solo on Bowie’s “Young Americans” is anything but. Sanborn preferred the idea that he “put the saxophone back into rock ’n’ roll.”
Indeed, he worked with a virtual who’s who of rock and R&b legends, including James Brown, Eric Clapton, Roger Daltrey, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, Al Jarreau, George Benson, Elton John, Carly Simon, Linda Ronstadt, Billy Joel, Roger Waters, Steely Dan, the Eagles,...

Oscar-nominated Debra Winger is one of the most enigmatic actresses of her generation. She burst onto the film scene in 1980 with “Urban Cowboy” and in the course of the next three years, she was nominated for four Golden Globe Awards as well as two Oscar nominations (for “Officer” and “Terms”). To many female moviegoers in particular, Winger embodied the kind of tough, self-sufficient woman that they aspired to become, yet there was always room within Winger’s characters for love with the right person.
Post-1983, Winger continued to work steadily, earning a fifth Golden Globe nod for 1993’s “A Dangerous Woman” as well as a third Oscar nomination and second BAFTA nom for 1993’s “Shadowlands.” However, after 1995’s romantic comedy “Forget Paris,” Winger virtually disappeared from high-profile films, choosing a semi-retirement with occasional film work now and then. The idea of retiring at the peak of one’s career was...

Let's face it: For the most part, basketball movies are bad. It's such a beautiful game, filled with such balletic human athleticism, that it seems like a natural fit for cinema. And yet, there are only a handful of great basketball films, and only one real masterpiece.
The reason for the relatively low quality, even compared to football films, seems to be that most serious directors aren't big fans of the game. Spike Lee is the only notable exception. Basketball is otherwise largely a backdrop for mediocre comedies, like Billy Crystal's "Forget Paris," or Whoopi Goldberg's even more forgettable "Eddie." Even Will Ferrell couldn't make the game all that amusing in his ode to the funky pre-nba-merger era, "Semi-Pro."

Make Way for Tomorrow: Crystal Courts Catharsis in Uneven Odd Couple Comedy
It’s been over twenty years since Billy Crystal stepped behind the camera, even longer if you’re counting theatrical features. So, there’s an automatic curiosity regarding Here Today, scripted by Alan Zweibel (based on his short story “The Prize”) in what plays like a partially autobiographical take on a comedy writer whose medical condition provides a pathway to personal redemption. Even more curious is Crystal’s co-star, comedian Tiffany Haddish, playing a kooky chanteuse whose chance meeting with the writer allows for the kind of poignant odd couple situation designed to prime our tears after two fun-filled acts.…...

In the new movie “Here Today,” Billy Crystal and Tiffany Haddish play an unlikely duo who form a May-December friendship. Off-screen, the comedy stars have grown just as close.
In fact, when Haddish celebrated her bat mitzvah in late 2019 with a star-studded shindig, Crystal was in attendance alongside Wanda Sykes, Common, Jimmy Kimmel, Chelsea Handler, Kevin Nealon and Sarah Silverman. While the party (held on Haddish’s 40th birthday) doubled as the red-carpet premiere for Haddish’s Netflix special “Black Mitzvah,” the intimate ceremony that preceded it was real, and Crystal played a special role.
“We had just wrapped the film. It was right before Thanksgiving, if I recall,” Crystal tells Variety in a joint interview with Haddish. “Tiffany called me and said, ‘I’m getting bat mitzvahed and I want you to do an Aliyah’ — which is a prayer right before she’s going to read from the Torah...

Billy Crystal has earned the right to be choosy. After nearly 50 years in the entertainment industry — from roasting Muhammad Ali to being a cast member on “Saturday Night Live,” hosting his own variety show and helping to modernize the romantic comedy, even serving as the contemporary ideal Oscars host, and that’s just the funny stuff — Crystal has hit comedic milestone after comedic milestone.
He’s also starred in some of the box office’s biggest hits, hosted the Grammys, directed four films, won six primetime Emmys, plus a Tony and a Mark Twain Prize. He even got to be friends with his childhood hero, Mickey Mantle, after directing HBO feature “61*” about Mantle and Roger Maris’ quest to break Babe Ruth’s home run record. It’s been a good run, and it’s not over yet.

Among Oscars hosts, few are as beloved as nine-time emcee Billy Crystal. Over the years, Crystal received critical and commercial adulation, as well as four Emmys, for his work on the big stage, but to do it again? Eh, not so much. Asked if Oscars brass had asked him back in recent years, Crystal told IndieWire during a recent interview, “No, they haven’t, but that’s okay.”
It’s a few days before the 2021 Oscars ceremony, and Crystal is promoting “Here Today,” a dramedy he co-wrote and stars in opposite Tiffany Haddish; it also represents the first time he’s directed a theatrical feature since “Forget Paris” in 1995. (Sony releases “Here Today” in theaters on May 7.) The last time Crystal hosted was when he stepped in after Eddie Murphy dropped out. The Oscars have had no host since Jimmy Kimmel in 2018, and Crystal said that today it’s an almost impossible role to fulfill.

Rush Limbaugh, the pioneering and polarizing conservative talk show host whose radio program drew millions of listeners and influenced Republican politicians including President Donald Trump, died today of lung cancer. He was 70.
Limbaugh’s wife, Kathryn, made the announcement on his radio show today. He had announced his Stage 4 cancer diagnosis a year ago, one day before Trump presented him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom during the 2020 State of the Union address.

Are you one of those people who sees all of the hoopla surrounding HBO content but never gets to play along?
Has adding another pay-tv option to your already overburdened entertainment fiscal responsibilities left you in the dark when it comes to HBO?
Have you unwisely chosen to spend your money on less critically acclaimed and lower quality content to get more bang for your buck?
Well, we have good news for you.
HBO knows you're a captive audience, and they're betting that once you get a taste of their popular and lauded entertainment that you might want to make it a more permanent thing.
Of course, that's my assessment, and I'd recommend HBO in a heartbeat. I have, and I will continue slathering praise on the network that has provided some of my all-time favorite content.
And now, you (that's You who don't have HBO), too, can find out...

Billy Crystal and Tiffany Haddish will star in and produce the independent comedy “Here Today,” with Crystal directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Alan Zweibel.
“Here Today” is based on Zweibel’s short story “The Prize.” Crystal will portray a veteran comedy writer who is slowly but surely losing his grip on reality and befriends a talented young New York street singer, played by Haddish. Together, they form an unlikely friendship that kicks the generation gap aside and redefines the meaning of love and trust.

Astute Films’ President Fred Bernstein made the announcement Wednesday. Besides Crystal and Haddish, producers are Bernstein, Zweibel and Dominique Telson. Happy birthday to the great Oscar-nominated Debra Winger who turns 64 on May 16, 2019. One of the most enigmatic actresses of her generation, Winger burst onto the film scene in 1980 with “Urban Cowboy” and in the course of the next three years, she was nominated for four Golden Globe Awards as well as two Oscar nominations (for “Officer” and “Terms”). To many female moviegoers in particular, Winger embodied the kind of tough, self-sufficient woman that they aspired to become, yet there was always room within Winger’s characters for love with the right person.
SEEShirley MacLaine movies: 20 greatest films ranked worst to best
Post-1983, Winger continued to work steadily, earning a fifth Golden Globe nod for 1993’s “A Dangerous Woman” as well as a third Oscar nomination and second BAFTA nom for 1993’s “Shadowlands.” However, after 1995’s romantic comedy “Forget Paris,” Winger virtually disappeared from high-profile films, choosing a semi-retirement with occasional film work now and then.

Longtime comedy screenwriting partners Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel, known for such hits as Splash, Parenthood, City Slickers and A League of Their Own, will receive this year’s WGA West’s Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement. The prize is presented to guild members who have “advanced the literature of motion pictures and made outstanding contributions to the profession of the screenwriter.”
“Starting in the 1980s with a string of critical and commercial hits, the imprint Ganz and Mandel have left on movies is profound,” said WGA West president David A. Goodman. “Their scripts are always a balancing act; funny and moving, edgy but never offensive. They understand that in order for the jokes to work, the characters have to be compelling and relatable, but never lose sight of the fact that in a comedy, you need comedy. The Oscar-nominated actor stars with Tracy Letts in a well-observed film about a cheating couple who fall in love with each other again after years of marriage
For an extended period throughout the 80s and early 90s, Debra Winger was one of the most successful female actors in the industry, scoring three Oscar nominations and appearing in films, such as An Officer and a Gentleman, Terms of Endearment, and Shadowlands. But in 1995, after co-starring with Billy Crystal in Forget Paris, she took a hiatus. While she claimed it was a decision based on a simple desire for time off, many saw it as an indication of how Hollywood treats women over the age of 40, her choice of roles clearly drying up.

The 1990s: a time when Sleepwalkers, Burt Reynolds, No Escape, Chevy Chase and F/X/2 could top the Us box office...
By the 1990s, studios were waking up to movie marketing, and the era of the blockbuster. Tim Burton's Batman, released in summer 1989, had introduced the idea of a big opening weekend, and modern movies now target their promotional work to get just that. As such, it's harder and harder for smaller films to snare the top slot at the Us box office, even for one weekend.
In the 1990s, particularly the first half of the 1990s, that wasn't so much the case though. In fact, many films that have long since fallen from the public conscious topped the chart. And in this piece, I've tried to capture some of them.

Another 25 unsung greats come under the spotlight, as we provide our pick of the underappreciated films of 1995...
The year covered in this week's underrated movie rundown was significant for a number of reasons. It was the year that saw the release of Toy Story - the groundbreaking movie that would cement Pixar's reputation as an animation studio, and set the tempo for CG family movies for the next 18 years and counting. It was the year that saw James Bond (played by Pierce Brosnan for the first time) emerge for GoldenEye after a six-year break. It was also the year of Michael Mann's Heat, Dogme 95, and the moment where Terry Gilliam scored a much-deserved hit with 12 Monkeys.
As ever, we're focusing on a few of the lesser-known films from this particular year, and we've had to think carefully about what's made the cut and what hasn't.

As he prepares to host the Academy Awards once more, we chart the movie highlights of Billy Crystal's career...
This Sunday will mark the ninth time that Billy Crystal has hosted the Academy Awards, and if he carries on at this pace his hosting appearances will soon catch up with his film appearances. That comment may be a little unfair, but despite being great screen presence and a talented comedian, Billy Crystal has never been a prolific actor, which is a great shame.
Below are what I consider to be some of his finest appearances in film.
10. Analyze This/Analyze That
These films are perhaps given a hard time as they can be used as an example of where Robert De Niro became a parody of himself, which is partly true. Still, these are far less egregious examples of this than, say, the Meet The... movies.

It is a sad commentary on the state of the genre that venturing out to see any romantic comedy these days comes with such a sense of foreboding. Which perfectly talented stars will be forced to gamely take part in dopey silliness? Which far too familiar plot elements will be recycled yet again? And will anyone have to do an entire scene with a live flapping pigeon attached to her head, as Debra Winger did in 1995’s “Forget Paris?” (I blame that single scene for the fact that it was eight...

If you're like me, you're trapped in the house under two feet of snow and you've got a lot of time on your hands. Simmons begins by identifying what a down year 2010 was for sports movies: besides "The Fighter," you had the inspirational horse drama (obviously -- all horse dramas are inspirational) "Secretariat," the basketball romantic comedy "Just Wright," (in the proud tradition of "Forget Paris") and the "Bad News Bears"-y girls' basketball movie "The Winning Season" starring Sam Rockwell. Scribes Lisa Addario and Joe Syracuse ("Surf's Up") have been hired to pen a family event movie based on the writings of journalist W. Hodding Carter for 20th Century Fox reports Risky Biz Blog.
Carter wrote about his drastic real-life efforts to scale down his family's spending. The family of six were living far beyond their means in rural Rockport, Maine and experimented with living on $550 per month after mortgage payments.
The result saw them farming their front yard, eating roadkill, skipping holidays and meals out, reusing coffee filters and bartering. Stacey Sher and Michael Shamberg will produce the feature.
Addario and Syracuse are also in the news today for other reasons, namely their previous draft of another film is getting a quick rewrite by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel ("City Slickers," "Forget Paris") reports Deadline.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has had quite an interesting career in a pretty short amount of time. He’s covered just about all of the prerequisites that his Action Movie forefathers set for him: Sci-Fi franchise, art-house picture, buddy movie, and family film. Those accolades took stars like Schwartzenegger and Stallone 15 years to accomplish, and Johnson has managed to do them in 5. He’s now coming off of the success of Race to Witch Mountain and The Game Plan for another family-friendly film in The Tooth Fairy.
In the film, Johnson plays tough guy Derek Thompson, known to his friends as “The Tooth Fairy” due to his aggressive sportsmanship on the hockey rink. Thompson is kind of an S.O.B. to fans, friends, and even his kid, until things get turned around and he is sentenced to serve as an actual tooth fairy.

Debra Winger's life has enough stories to fill a dozen movies. Want to hear about overcoming adversity? When Winger was 17, a car accident put her in a coma for weeks and left her partially paralyzed and blind for 10 months, during which time she vowed that if she recovered, she would become an actor. How about a great discovery story? As a struggling unknown actor, she crashed an audition and won the coveted role of the brash, sensual Sissy, opposite John Travolta, in Urban Cowboy, which made her an instant star. A hint of scandal? It's no secret Winger has had tense relationships on set, such as with her An Officer and a Gentleman director, Taylor Hackford, and her Terms of Endearment co-star Shirley MacLaine. And how about a tale with a surprise twist? After turning 40, with three Oscar nominations to her name, firmly ensconced as a sought-after actor, Winger...

Debra Winger's Long Stint Away From The Spotlight
American actress Debra Winger is stunned at the way everybody's seeing her latest movie as a comeback - because she didn't realise she was gone for so long. Winger, 46, dropped out of the spotlight after starring in the forgettable flick Forget Paris opposite Billy Crystal six years ago. The three-time Oscar nominee has now re-emerged on American cinema screens with her new movie Big Bad Love - and she's shocked to realize how long it's actually been since her last film outing. She says, "I didn't, like, announce my retirement, but I didn't look back and I was busy all the time. Time accelerates as you get older, and now when I hear it's been six years, it doesn't feel like it. I mean, I had a baby, my mom passed, I taught, I did two plays. I lived my life."...

Winger, star of such classics as Terms Of Endearment and An Officer And A Gentleman, claims the people she was "dealing with" are the ones who turned her off pursuing further success in the movie world, causing her to vanish into near-obscurity. In the February issue of Premiere magazine she says, "It was a real struggle for me. And the older you get, the more you feel hypocritical for living off it." And the brunette beauty, 46, also speaks of her reputation for being difficult to work with, explaining, "It keeps away the fainthearted. But I don't think I'm unkind. I think I might have been unkind when I was young. Listen, I did wild things, I lived a wild life. I consumed much. I just exploded with my independence. But I don't think I hurt anyone. I was too busy hurting myself." Winger will return to screens in Big Bad Love - her first film since 1995's Forget Paris - but refuses to term it a comeback. She says, "I'm not coming back anywhere. I am, however, many years older, and my interests are totally different, and there's nothing to come back to."...
