You might already know Kishi Bashi — nee Kaoru Ishibashi — who spent years performing as a multi-instrumentalist with artists including Regina Spektor and Of Montreal before he struck out on his heralded solo career. You may also know that he has been nominated for an Emmy in the Outstanding Arts and Culture Documentary for A Song Film by Kishi Bashi - 'Omoiyari.' But did you know that he’s inspired by anime? With his new video for “Lilliputian Chop,” Kishi Bashi takes that love and cranks up the funk with a saxophone powered bop. I’m excited to bring you the exclusive premiere for this song, which was animated by famed Japanese studio Tonari Animation! In addition to the premiere, I chatted with Ishibashi about his roots and the video creation process. Kishi Bashi Interview Can you tell me a little about your anime journey? How it started and where you are now?...

After 10 years of saving the world, the superheroes of My Hero Academia have hanged their capes and are supposedly moving towards the end of the series. However, they are leaving the industry as one of the biggest anime and manga franchises of all time, competing with the likes of Jujutsu Kaisen, One Piece, Chainsaw Man, etc.
My Hero Academia | Bones Inc.
While the anime is still going on and will probably go on for another year, the manga series is only two chapters away from the conclusion. Kohei Horikoshi has indeed crafted an intriguing story that has not only impressed the Japanese audience but has also grabbed global attention by making it to the top of multiple North American bestseller lists.
Not only that, but the series has also accomplished the impossible by reaching 100 million copies in circulation worldwide. This proves that My Hero Academia has been making waves in the West,...

The upcoming July 2024 issue of the Japanese movie magazine Eiga Hiho (literally meaning Movie Treasures ) will feature an illustration of the protagonist Furiosa from Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga on its cover. The illustration was newly drawn by Tetsuo Hara , best known as the illustrator of the Fist of the North Star manga series. Check Out the Best Anime Games of All Time, From Dragon Ball Z to Naruto (Photo Credit – IMDb)
There are plenty of anime out there that make use of the gaming trope as their premise. You know, the one where the main character gets trapped inside a video game and now has to scale through all its levels to become the strongest being alive. Isekai anime and manga are particularly fond of this trope — with the most famous ones being “No Game, No Life,” “Overlord,” and “Sword Art Online.” There’s also the newest hype in the anime world with the manhwa turned anime, Solo Levelling.
But what if we tell you some games do the opposite and use anime as their premise? Here are four fan-favorite games that have been adapted from their anime counterparts.

Original A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) cinematographer Jacques Haitkin passed away last month at the age of 72, we’ve learned via The Hollywood Reporter today.

He later reunited with Wes Craven on the horror movie Shocker (1989).

As the beginning of his IMDb bio states, “Every horror film buff will recognize the name Jacques Haitkin.” Haitkin was the cinematographer on one of the most popular horror movies ever made, the 1984 Wes Craven classic A Nightmare on Elm Street (watch it Here). And while Craven didn’t return to the helm for A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge, Haitkin did return to be the cinematographer on that sequel. Sadly, we have to share the news today that Jacques Haitkin is no longer with us. This news was broken on the Facebook account of filmmaker Tony Randel, who is best known for directing Hellbound: Hellraiser II and worked with Haitkin on Galaxy of Terror, Ticks, Fist of the North Star, Rattled, One Good Turn, and Assignment Berlin.
Randel posted, “I knew Jacques Haitkin practically my entire career. We met on a Roger Corman horror/sci-fi epic – Galaxy of Terror.

One of the most violent animated films of the 80s, Fist Of The North Star is also one of the weirdest, Ryan writes...
British fans of Japanese culture had to get their anime fixes where they could find them in the early 90s. The success of Akira prompted a trickle of Japanese animation, mostly via Manga Entertainment, but the selection was often leftfield to say the least. We got enjoyable fare like 3x3 Eyes, Project A-Ko and Dominion: Tank Police in the first few years of the 90s, but then we were also given Urotsukidoji: Legend Of The Overfiend, a deeply strange slab of erotic horror pretty much guaranteed to generate controversy.

From Japanese anime to Disney via stop-motion, here are 18 animated films that are mystifyingly unavailable on Blu-ray...
Not all movies need to be seen in HD, but if there's one type of filmmaking that regularly benefits from the Blu-ray format, it's animation. Let us cite one example at random: My Neighbour Totoro. Until fairly recently, the only copy we had on the shelf was an early, imported version on DVD, which was grainy and a little washed-out.
When Studio Canal issued Totoro on Blu-ray in 2012, the difference in image quality was little short of a revelation: Hayao Miyazaki's colours and fluid lines positively shimmered. In short, it was like seeing this fresh, sun-drenched film again for the first time.
The same could be said for so many other animated films, no matter what country they come from: in high-definition, we can truly...

The actor James Avery, one of the stars of The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air and countless other shows, has sadly passed away.
We're sad to learn that James Avery, the distinctive and extremely talented actor best known for his role as Philip Banks in 90s comedy series The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air, has passed away at the age of 68.
Although Banks was arguably Avery's signature role, he worked extraordinarily hard throughout his career, repeatedly appearing in TV movies and series from 1980 onwards. His credits included The Closer, Star Trek: Enterprise, The Legend Of Prince Valiant and La Law, and his voice could also be heard in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated 80s and early 90s series, The Real Ghostbusters and the dubbed version of the cult Japanese anime, Fist Of The North Star.

What are your thoughts on betting? Think they're total waste of time and money? Are you not into guessing the outcome of sporting matches or horse races? At least enough to put money down on them.
What about fighting games? Would you be more inclined to wager on virtual head to head matches? What if the money you had was not real? That's probably a bit better.
But to make it even more exciting, and since nothing is actually real anyway, why not make them computer driven matches featuring completely random characters? We're not talking Ryu vs. M. Bison, we're talking Sub Zero vs. Homer Simpson.
Welcome to the wild world of Salyy Bet, which broadcasts randomly generated matches via Mugen. For those unfamiliar, it's an open sourced fighting platform that allows for any and all game characters go head to head, so the real name of the game is custom creations.

In July 1988, one of Japan’s finest animated films appeared in cinemas. Ahead of its 25th anniversary, Ryan looks back at Akira...
For anime, 1988 was an extraordinary year. That April, Studio Ghibli released My Neighbor Totoro and Grave Of The Fireflies, two films that would soon cement its already growing reputation as one of Japan's finest animation houses. And three months later, writer, artist and director Katsuhiro Otomo would unveil Akira, one of the most important and influential animated features of the entire decade.
Based on Otomo's best-selling, voluminous manga of the same name (which was still being published when its adaptation was released), Akira is set in a 2019 Neo-Tokyo balanced on a knife-edge. Rival motorcycle gangs fight in the streets. Revolutionaries and religious fanatics clash with the police. Behind the scenes, the military and sneaky politicians tussle for control, while scientists carry out strange experiments on grey-faced children.

Launching into this is always going to be a fairly thankless exercise. The sheer number of animated films makes this tricky enough, let alone the variety in style, tone and technique.
Classic hand-drawn animation (The Jungle Book), anime/manga (Fist of the North Star), CG animation (Toy Story), overlaid animation (rotoscoping – A Scanner Darkly), stop-motion (Chicken Run), performance capture (Beowulf). We could go on. Indeed a Top Ten list could be compiled for any one of those techniques and you would still come nowhere near scraping the barrel.
It is indeed a rich art form. So, at the risk of reducing the list too much and also at the risk of leaving out too many beloved films, I’m going to go for range and variety rather than trying to rank every animated film in order of quality and then skim off the top six.

Hokuto no Ken, better known to English speakers as Fist of the North Star, is a long-lasting and iconic Japanese manga and anime franchise, which received a video game adaptation earlier this generation in the form of Fist of the North Star: Ken’s Rage. Recently, as part of the celebration revolving around the series’ 30th anniversary, Tecmo-Koei has once again taken their gameplay template for Dynasty Warriors and applied it to the post-apocalyptic beat-downs this series is known for, creating the sequel, Fist of the North Star: Ken’s Rage 2. The end result, while not truly awful, is ultimately too mediocre, basic, and repetitive to get much fun out of.
The story mode in Ken’s Rage 2 takes place in a Mad Max-like post-apocalyptic wasteland, with villagers struggling to survive and gangs of punk-attired thugs causing trouble. The majority of the story focuses on a wanderer named Kenshiro,...

Is it snowing where you are? If so, four new games out this week will offer you quite a few hours of stuff to do to stave off the cabin fever. Visceral Games rounds out their Necromorph saga with "Dead Space 3," while the seemingly endless "Fire Emblem" series brings its latest entry to the 3Ds.
What are you picking up this week? Or a month into 2013, are you still working off that holiday stack?
Title: "Dead Space 3"
Platform(s): PC, PS3, Xbox 360
Visceral returns to their increasingly chatty protagonist Isaac Clark, throwing him (and a co-op buddy) against a new Necromorph threat--possibly at its point of origin. It's an expensive-looking game and a lot of time and effort obviously went into constructing the new environments that will stalk Isaac throughout the campaign. Does that make for a better horror game (he asked rhetorically).

Early this morning Nintendo sent us an update on their upcoming release schedule and it finally gave us release dates on some upcoming games we've all been looking forward to (like Lego City: Undercover, Luigi's Mansion 2, and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate), but also some distressing news about games being pushed back.
First off, let's talk about the big things. Unfortunately, the Wii U's launch window is beginning to narrow down, and it looks like many of the games we were promised to come out in that timeframe are going to be missing it completely. Games like Pikmin 3, Game & Wario, The Wonderful 101, and Wii Fit U had previously been slated for release at some point before or on March 31st. According to Nintendo now, they are coming "sometime in the first half of 2013". That's a fairly large window of time there, more than likely meaning we won't see them in the next month or two.

In a press release this morning, Tecmo Koei announced that the brawler based on the classic manga would not be getting a disc-based release when it hits the Wii U in February. The Wii U version of the game came in late in the development of "Ken's Rage 2," although to what extent this impacted the plans for a disc release, it remains unclear, however the 360 and PS3 versions will receive normal retail releases.
The "Dynasty Warriors"-like brawler is a sequel to 2010's "Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage" and will cover the storyline of the entire manga featuring esoteric, bloody martial arts styles in a nuclear war-ravaged future. It will be available on the 360, PS3, and Wii U on February 5.

Both the of the wave-based brawlers are coming to consoles in February and one of them even has a Wii U version in development.
While 2010's "Fist of the North Star" racked up some mediocre (at best) reviews, I've been holding out hope that the sequel--which will cover the entirety of the manga with rotating playable characters--might have gotten the bump in quality that the two years between releases would hopefully allow. I mean, as far as "Dynasty Warriors" clones go, you're not going to get a lot of variation, but the first didn't even really seem to work well within the context of even that basic formula.
Well, in addition to bringing "Fist of the North Star 2" and its 20 playable characters, co-op, and some new storylines to the PS3 and 360, we can also look forward to a Wii U version, which Tecmo Koei announced is currently in development.

With Tokyo Game Show 2012 set to begin on Thursday, announcements are starting to trickle out from all the major publishers. Tecmo Koei is one of the first out of the gate, revealing a lineup that includes several new titles for all the major platforms, including Nintendo’s upcoming Wii U.
Planting themselves firmly on familiar, heavily sequel-ized ground, Tecmo Koei’s lineup for Tokyo Game Show 2012 includes; Dynasty Warriors 7: Empires, Dead or Alive 5, Fist of the North Star: Ken’s Rage 2, and the Wii U launch title Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper.
Unfortunately, there was no word on another Tecmo Bowl remake.
If you happen to be attending Tgs this year, make sure to check out Tecmo Koei’s booth, located at #2-N1 in the 2nd Hall.

With Darksiders II out on shelves this week, we thought we'd look back at some off the beaten path games set after the end of the world (or close to it). And by "off the beaten path" we mean we're intentionally skipping such greats like Fallout 3 or Half-Life 2 for a few games that you might have forgotten or that slipped off your radar entirely.
Check out the list after the jump.
5. Phantom Crash
This mech combat game for the Xbox mixed in deep customization with frantic fighting in the ruins of Tokyo. The premise was pretty simple: after everything was devastated by what we're going to assume was nuclear conflict, in the year 2031, you could do some Rumbling: a new sport that involved using your mechs to wreck other mechs.

Looking back at the list of titles that graced 8-bit consoles (and PCs) in 1987, you find that's it's a veritable parade of first entries in what would in time go on to either greatly influence gaming or spawn literally dozens of sequels between them. This is the year that modern video gaming was born, as simple left-to-right platforming was starting to experience previously unseen variations and mutations, while the standard bearers of fighting games and RPGs experienced their genesis. Take a look back at some of these classic titles celebrating their 25th anniversary as part of the 1987 Silver series on MTV Multiplayer.

September's Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is getting a dedicated training mode similar to the mission mode in Soul Calibur V and Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection. Here, it looks like you'll be using the all-purpose fighter Combat to brush up on some of the various characters' fighting styles and Tekken basics with a little coaching from the gloriously-coiffed Lee Chaolan and others.
What looks super-useful here is how it will coach new players in how to spot and target specific areas on opponents, potentially easing newbies into mixing up their combos beyond the old 1-2-1 punch.
Tekken Tag Tournament 2 will be available for the 360 and PS3 on September 11.

Tecmo Koei's followup to Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage will hit this winter, but in the meantime, you can check out some gameplay and story screens from the sequel. On display: exploded bodies and lots of dead bikers along with some of the manga-style story presentation promised in the initial announcement for the Dynasty Warriors-style brawler.

From Tecmo Koei, who brought us the everlasting Dynasty Warriors franchise as well as the anime spin-offs; Gundam and Fist of the North Star, comes One Piece: Pirate Warriors. Based once again on the Dynasty Warriors gameplay model, One Piece: Pirate Warriors combines the classic manga/anime’s style of action into a 3d action platformer.
Coming exclusively to PS3 at some point in 2012, One Piece: Pirate Warriors marks the strongest entry the One Piece franchise has seen in the West. The game came out earlier this year in Japan and was hugely successful. Of course this means little over here, where One Piece is almost exclusive to the anime crowd and has seen little attention on the cartoon channels. However, it is certainly reassuring that those like me who love One Piece will be getting a quality title that will tick all the fan boxes.

Tony Randel (Hellbound: Hellraiser II, Fist of the North Star) and Jim Wynorski (Chopping Mall, Not of This Earth, The Return of the Swamp Thing, Dinocroc vs. Supergator) will be co-directing a remake of The Giant Gila Monster, the public domain (meaning you too can remake this movie) black and white horror flick from 1959. Playboy Playmate Julie McCullough will starring alongside Terence Knox, Matt Austin, Ellen Kingston and Jenna Ruiz, reports Robert Hood. Bill Dever and Jim Nielsen are producing. The original, directed by Ray Kellogg, follows a giant lizard that terrorizes a rural Texas community with a heroic teenager attempting to destroy the creature.

What motion picture could possibly be so epic it would require the combined directorial talents of the director of Hellbound: Hellraiser II and the director of Chopping Mall? Would you believe a remake of the 1959 bad movie classic The Giant Gila Monster?
If you’re going to remake a movie, you might as well remake a bad one, and The Giant Gila Monster is most definitely a bad movie. Sure, the ultra low budget 1959 drive-in creature feature that used footage of a real live gila monster as its greatest special effect has marked its place as a classic b-movie; let’s just not kid ourselves about it actually being a good movie.
So can a low budget remake of The Giant Gila Monster actually make a good movie out of hallmark of bad cinema? It certainly can’t tarnish its legacy.

Asura’s Wrath is the brand new “beat ‘em-up” game from the folks at Capcom and developers Cyberconnect 2, which introduces a brand new style of action that combines intense combat with seamless player-controlled narrative through both traditional beat ‘em-up controls, Panzer-Dragoon inspired chase sequences and quicktime events. The game sees you play, given the title, as Asura as he takes revenge on the seven Guardian Generals who framed him for a murder he didn’t commit, killed his wife and took his daughter captive.
Obviously inspired by Japanese, Chinese, and Indian mythology Asura’s Wrath features some gorgeous character graphics – running on Unreal Engine 3 – and some absolutely fantastic battle sequences. With god-like characters that look like a mix between Dragonball Z, Devil Man and Fist of the North Star characters and battles that are waged across entire planets the game has a real feeling of being epic. On an epic scale.

Looky here! The first image of Karl Urban from the wholly unnecessary Judge Dredd remake (titled, simply, Dredd) was just released. While the image is dark and fairly benign, I think we can all agree that this helmet is going to present a serious challenge to Urban. . .you know. . .actingwise. . .not cracking-upwise. . .me taking him at all seriouslywise. Here's the full image:

Why limit booth babes to a booth, when you can give them the run of an entire parking lot? Thq booth babes took over the Los Angeles convention center parking lot for E3 in anticipation of one of the most wacked-out games that will hit the home console this fall.
Saints Row: The Third or Saints Row 3 as it is popularly referred to will be hitting the home consoles this fall (currently, expected on Nov 15, 2011). The game is all about taking Grand Theft Auto carnage to the nth level, topped off with as many thematic sexual innuendos as you can imagine.
So what better way to preview the game than with a few bikini wearing models, with dollars in their panties and soap suds on their hands. That’s not my opinion, just the promotion Thq brought to La in early June, giving gamers a chance to park their cars...

“It will grow on you,” warned my friend when he lent me the new Fist of the North Star game. I gave him a look, because I know he actively keeps up with Koei’s flagship Dynasty Warriors series despite knowing it ain’t doing a lick of good for him. The last time I legitimately had fun with the Dynasty Warriors franchise was with the first entry, long, long ago in my old basement on a new Playstation 2. Simply thrilled at the newfound joy of massacring hundreds of faceless peons who stood in my sword’s/horses’ way. “I killed three hundred people! I totally did that!” I would exclaim in delight, but that was a magic that quickly wore off. Entry after entry Dynasty Warriors seems impressively dedicated to never, ever changing, no matter how much other games have progressed. But now Koei is moving on to new blood,...

The Hughes brothers don't make too many films (it's already been 9 years since From Hell), but when they immerse themselves in a project the end result is often worth pursuing. As proven by their latest film. The Book Of Eli turned out to be a superb post-apocalyptic action flick, borrowing royally from various other sources but fine-tuning the mix to make it into something unique. This is Hollywood at its very best.
There aren't too many Hollywood films that dare to please their audience by gamble on atmosphere and styling alone. Luckily rules are made to be broken and the Hughes brothers take this concept a long way beyond any local competition in their latest film. From the initial trailers and promo material it became obvious this was going to be something special, the complete film more than delivers.
Reliable sources link the film to the Fallout games, both in style and setting.

The ultraviolent manga series Fist Of The North Star is rightfully no stranger to videogame adaptation. Remember the Story Of Ricky head-exploding sequence that used to be shown on The Daily Show? Fist Of The North Star is much, much gorier. But if Ken’s Rage is any indication, maybe after 24 years, it’s time to hang up the blood-soaked towel. The entire ...
