The director and other members of the original Japanese production crew consider the North American dub cast to be the "definitive" voices of the characters, superior to the original Japanese cast.

In the Pioneer (North American) dub, when Jinnai orders his Bugrom bodyguard to attack during their face-off against the priestesses in the tunnels on the Forbidden Island, the second Bugrom to reply very clearly says "Excusez-moi, après vous" ("Excuse me, after you", in French).

In the English dub, when Jinnai gives new names to a group of Bugrom soldiers, he names most of them after the Marx brothers (Groucho, Harpo, Zeppo and Chico, along with Gummo and Margaret Dumont (The brothers' regular comic foil).

The character of Katsuhiko Jinnai is modeled and named after a director and animator named Katsuhiko Nishijima.
