(at around 6 mins) A shot shows Balto and Boris on a snow-covered roof with no windows visible, yet when Boris slides down the roof, he falls through a window that wasn't there in the previous shot.
(at around 55 mins) Steele has four toes on each paw, but when he is telling Jenna the totally bogus "Balto's dead" story and counts on his paw, the paw he's counting on has five toes.
(at around 16 mins) When Muk and Luk come after Boris, he uses a bucket and broom to protect himself. But then Luk picks him up from behind and he drops the bucket and broom. When he escapes from Luk's clutches, the broom and bucket have completely disappeared.
(at around 43 mins) After the grizzly bear crashes through the ice, a hole forms around Balto. After Balto goes under and the camera pulls back, there is no sign of the hole the bear left behind.
(at around 15 mins) When Balto and Boris are lying next to each other depressed on the ship, a flock of geese flies overhead. When we cut back to Balto and Boris, the blanket that was covering Balto has disappeared.
The film depicts the grizzly bear as a large monstrous beast that can stand bipedal for a long time, while the polar bears Luk and Muk are a harmless and friendly comic duo. In reality, polar bears not only grow to be much bigger in size than grizzlies but they are also known to be amongst the most aggressive predators of all bear species.
The film incorrectly depicts the Nome telegraph office as as a common building in the center of the town, connected to telegraph wires. It was, in fact, a wireless station on the outskirts of the town, next to a large radio antenna.
(at around 26 mins) The medicine is shipped from Juneau to Nenana by way of the Alaska Railroad. In real life, the Alaska Railroad doesn't run through Juneau, but it does run through Anchorage, which is where the medicine was shipped to Nenana from in real life.
All of the sled dog harnesses are different colors and each has a strap connecting the chest strap to the belly band. In the 1920s, all sled dog harnesses were made of brown leather and never had a strap connecting the chest strap to the belly band until the 1940s, when the harnesses were modified (though people in Canada continued to use the old-fashioned harnesses until around the 1970s). Furthermore, there are no X-shaped or H-shaped adjustable straps on the back of any of the harnesses. Sled dog harnesses have always had X-shaped or H-shaped adjustable straps on the back.
(at around 57 mins) The "Northern Lights" trick with the broken bottles is not possible.
(at around 1h 2 mins) A couple of minutes before the avalanche scene, a shot shows the team disappearing into the forest after climbing the hill, but none of the dogs leave pawprints, and the sled doesn't leave any tracks.
(at around 8 mins) In the beginning of the movie, after the team turns a corner and is running down the street, two shots show Balto looking at Jenna off-screen, with the team in the distance. If you look closely, the dog team is just making running motions and not actually moving. At the rate they were going, the team would've reached and passed Balto fairly quickly.
(at around 28 mins) During the race to decide the fastest dog for the team, when Nikki kicks Balto after the dogs turn a corner, it it obvious that none of the running dogs leave paw prints.
(at around 11 mins) After Steele says "Well, maybe your taste runs more toward... wolf" to Jenna, she walks away, being called by her owners. Then Dixie walks over to him and makes a suggestive comment. During this whole time, if you look closely, none of the people behind them or in the distance move.
(at around 20 mins) When Balto is talking to Jenna outside the hospital, when he says "Hi. Look, uh... just a shot in the dark, but I was wondering if, uh... I-I don't know, maybe you'd like to go chase a few sticks by moonlight?", you can hear an echo in Balto's voice when he says "chase a few sticks by moonlight".
At many points of the movie, certain parts of characters are either not filled in, missing, or have the colors switched around.
At most points of the movie, characters do not leave foot- or paw-prints behind.
When Balto is shivering after being pulled out of the river, his left eye sclera is white, but in the rest of the movie, both of his eye sclerae are pale yellow.
The boats docked in Nome Harbor, including the abandoned boat Balto lives in, are of wood construction. In the early 1900s, all boats in Nome were of steel construction.
(at around 21 mins) After Balto says "I have the keys to the city", he lifts the bolts out of the door hinges and they fall to the ground, making a metallic noise, like they fell onto cement or something else solid, but there's snow on the ground, not cement or other hard, solid material.
(at around 10 mins) In the beginning, when Dixie congratulates Steele, her mouth doesn't move.
(at around 44 mins) On the frozen river, after Boris gets the ice off his head, Jenna says "Where are they?", but her mouth doesn't move when she says it.
(at around 45 mins) When Jenna gets close to Balto after he says "but I'm glad you came", she says "Are you okay?", then Balto says "Are you okay?", but neither of their mouths move when they say it.
(at around 24 mins) When Jenna says "Gee, Steele. I have to admit, your offer is... very tempting.", her mouth doesn't move.
Nome is south of the arctic circle. In Winter, it is mostly dark, except for a few hours of sunlight around noon. The sunset must have taken place much earlier in the day.
(at around 52 mins) After Balto takes control of the team and begins leading them back, Steele makes his way back up the cliff to find that he is far behind them. And yet, somehow, he manages to get ahead of Balto and the team to sabotage Balto's tree markings.
(at around 43 mins) After Muk and Luk jump into the frozen lake, Jenna calls out for them in their correct names. This was the first scene in the film where Jenna encounters Muk and Luk and there was no way she could've knew their names without anyone mentioning so.
Throughout the film, many people, including children, are shown walking around outside, wearing simple coats. Nome averages 0 degrees Farenheit from December to March, and therefore, everyone should be bundled up more.
The movie is set in the U.S. state of Alaska, but Nikki has a stereotypical New York accent (complete with replacing every use of "you" with "youse"), and Muk and Luk, despite being polar bears, have English accents.
In the 1996 VHS commercial for the film when the announcer introduces Kaltag and Nikki in the character introduction he announces Kaltag and Star instead of Kaltag and Nikki.
Steele mocks Balto's half-wolf heritage by howling, saying he has "a message for [Balto's] mother." This is a hypocritical way to mock Balto, as Steele is a pure bred Alaskan Malamute, and Malamutes, like Huskies and many other spitz breed dogs, also howl rather than bark.
