Should you ever need to give your watchlist some extra oomph, you can't go wrong by referring to IMDb's Top 250 list, which includes some of the best movies that cinema has ever had to offer. The great thing about such a mammoth pile of films is that icons of Hollywood will be popping in more than one entry on the list. Of course, some stars have a greater presence on this compendium than others, and while it might not shock many as to who has the most entries, it's surprising to see who the runner-ups are.
Coming in at the number one spot with the most films in IMDb's Top 250 is the man many believe to be perhaps the best actor ever -- Robert De Niro. Having appeared in over 100 films, nine of De Niro's projects rank among the website's most beloved 250: "The Godfather Part II," "Goodfellas,...

It seems odd to think that there's still any kind of debate over the legitimacy of horror as a serious form of filmmaking. The very term "elevated horror" — against which this site has argued passionately — implies from the outset that the genre needs some sort of additional element in order to ascend to the level of that most revered of movie genres: drama. But aside from the fact that it's ridiculous to suppose that confronting society's widespread fears through the art of film is somehow less important than other cinematic projects, the history of cinema itself is replete with masterpieces that stand unapologetically within the horror sphere.
Sadly, in 2024 it seems this point still hasn't quite sunk in, as evidenced by the fact that IMDb's top 250 movies list only features five horror films. Now, it should go without saying that IMDb is not the arbiter of quality in filmmaking,...

In September 2018, journalist and bestselling author Otegha Uwagba tweeted, “Men should be glad women want equality and not revenge.” Espoused in response to the #MeToo Movement, her statement reflects justifiable rage for a world that seems intent on taking away female rights and treating women as less than human. Shortly before this collective culmination of fourth-wave feminism, Stephen King explored the concept in his 2017 novel Sleeping Beauties. Written with his son and fellow novelist Owen King, the sprawling story imagines a world without women and places the future of patriarchy entirely in the hands of a small group of female survivors.

With a show like "The Simpsons," which has an undeniably perfect run of early seasons, It's impossible to pick a best episode. We at /Film have had a go at ranking the best seasons of "The Simpsons," and even ranking the best "Simpsons" episodes, but even then the process of trying to pick between unimpeachably brilliant installments reveals the futility of it all.
As almost everyone knows, the show lost its way as it went on, though the exact point at which it jumped the proverbial shark remains a hotly debated topic among fans. Even taking the most conservative view, i.e. that "The Simpsons" was only really good from seasons 4 to 8, that's still five seasons of 22 to 24 episodes each to pick from — all of them classic entries.
For those with a Comic Book Guy disposition, however, getting a final and resolute answer to this conundrum of the single best...

Scott Hicks' 2001 supernatural drama "Hearts in Atlantis" should have been a big hit. Based on a novel by Stephen King, the movie blended the author's bent for 1950s and 1960s nostalgia with his knack for mysterious fantasy. Told in flashback, "Hearts" tells the story of a 12-year-old named Bobby (played by eventual "Star Trek" actor Anton Yelchin) who is largely neglected by his self-absorbed mother (Hope Davis) and who spends his idle summer days with his two best friends, Carol (Meeka Boorem) and Sully (Will Rothhaar). To make ends meet, Bobby's mom takes on a lodger named Ted Brautigan (Anthony Hopkins) and Bobby soon learns that Ted has some kind of psychic power. He can read minds, and make objects float.
Ted explains calmly to Bobby that he has to keep the powers secret, as he is being pursued by people he calls "Low Men." Unusually, Ted's superpowers aren't the center of the film's plot,...

Margot Robbie Talks About Babylon’s Reception (Photo Credit – Facebook)
Margot Robbie is one of the most sought-after actresses in Hollywood. Debuting in the industry with The Wolf of Wall Street and gaining critical acclaim for Barbie, Robbie has never said no to ambitious projects. In 2022, she acted in a movie called Babylon alongside Brad Pitt. Babylon is an epic by director Damien Chazelle, famous for La La Land and Whiplash.
The film promised an honest look at the world of 1920s Hollywood, showing the industry’s chaotic transition from silent films to talkies. Babylon boasted an all-star cast, including Diego Calva, Jean Smart, and Tobey Maguire, alongside Robbie and Brad Pitt. With Chazelle at the helm, the film seemed destined for massive success. However, it fell flat upon its release, and the actress is still confused about why.
Margot Robbie is hoping Babylon will get the Shawshank Redemption treatment from fans.

Morgan Freeman once said, “The best way to guarantee a loss is to quit.” If anyone’s taken this advice to heart, it’s the actor himself. Over the decades, he has worked tirelessly, proving time and again that quitting isn’t in his vocabulary.
From that unmistakable voice that could calm a wild bear to performances that tug at the heartstrings like a pro, this Tennessee-born actor, now 87, has made a career out of not playing by the rules. And who can blame him? When you’ve been in the game as long as he has, you get to do whatever the heck you want.

“The Shawshank Redemption” star and “Mystic River” Oscar winner Tim Robbins recently told The Guardian that he’s worried about the future of movies given how much algorithms now dictate what viewers watch. And in most cases, the algorithm is leading people to more of the same and not anything unique.
“You go on Netflix right now, you see what films are coming out and you tell me that that’s the future of cinema?” Robbins said. “We’re in big trouble.”
Robbins currently stars on the Apple TV+ science-fiction series “Silo,” which is now in its second season. He told The Guardian that “Shawshank” is one of the reasons he’s holding on to hope that the algorithm can somewhat be defeated given than most audiences rejected the prison drama when it opened in theaters in 1994.

The Shawshank Redemption might have one of the most unique success stories of the last 30 years. In 1994 and 1995, the film was somehow both heralded and forgotten, falling in the cracks as it floundered at the box office. That’s right: despite an eventual seven Oscar nominations (tying for second that year), The Shawshank Redemption would be drastically underseen by the nation, only being the 91st highest-grossing movie of 1994 – behind Monkey Trouble! So how did it become the cult favorite it is today?
The Shawshank Redemption would only ever peak at #8 at the box office, meaning it would either be forgotten or have to rely on other means of attention. This would come straight from the boob tube, as Tim Robbins remembered, giving special thanks to controversial media mogul Ted Turner. “We’re at 30 years now [on from] Shawshank Redemption. Tim Robbins thinks the future of cinema is in “big trouble” due to streaming platforms like Netflix.‘The Shawshank Redemption’ actor, 66, has moved over to the streaming world for the second series of Apple TV+’s show ‘Silo’, though has now stressed the movie industry may not thrive forever due to the quality of projects that platforms like Netflix release.During an interview with The Guardian newspaper, Robbins said: “You go on Netflix right now, you see what films are coming out and you tell me that that’s the future of cinema? We’re in big trouble.”As well as the consequences of streaming, Robbins reflected on the “inhumane” working practices going on in Hollywood, and took pride in the fact that no one in the crew worked more than 10 hours a day on ‘Silo’.He said: “Actors have it easy, they don’t work every day.“When they...

IMDb admittedly has a flawed ratings system -- one that's prone to review bombing and generally biased against genres like horror and romance -- but it still has its merits. For instance, its Top 250 list of films is pretty hard to argue with; from "The Shawshank Redemption" ranking at #1 to "Paris, Texas" making the cut, most people would agree that these movies are all, at the very least, pretty good.
The only real issue with the Top 250 list is that superhero movies are a little overvalued there. I can't complain that "The Dark Knight" is ranked #3 on the list, but I will indeed complain that "The Dark Knight Rises" is ranked #71. Sorry, but there's just no way "Dark Knight Rises" deserves to be over a hundred spots above "Catch Me If You Can." I'm not buying it; someone must've fudged the numbers.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, actor Tim Robbins credited television magnate Ted Turner with transforming “The Shawshank Redemption” into a treasured classic, detailing the film’s surprising journey from small theatrical success to cultural sensation.
The prison drama, released 30 years ago, struggled to connect with moviegoers despite critical acclaim and seven Oscar nominations. The film grossed $73 million worldwide on a $25 million budget, delivering solid results but not foreshadowing its future iconic stature.
“When it came out, it got good reviews, it got nominated for Academy awards, but nobody saw it,” Mr. Robbins said. He underlined that television reruns and VHS distribution, particularly through Turner’s network, were critical in helping the film reach its target demographic.
The actor, who presently appears in Apple TV+’s “Silo,” expressed concern about modern material distribution. He attacked the current streaming scene, claiming that automated content selection may prevent unusual films like “Shawshank” from reaching popularity today.

It is 30 years since The Shawshank Redemption debuted, but it remains as beloved as ever, and its star Tim Robbins credits one man for its survival – Ted Turner.
In an interview with The Guardian newspaper, Robbins rails against algorithms dictating our viewing habits and cites his 1994 film about the fates of prison inmates as one that wouldn’t have made it in this era.
Robbins said:

You don't often see the great movies coming. Sure, some classics swagger their way into theaters (like "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" did in 2023), but take a look at the vast majority of the movies on your favorites queue and you'll see titles that arrived with very little fanfare. Warner Bros. didn't expect "L.A. Confidential" to take off like it did, and Columbia Pictures was absolutely stunned when "The Shawshank Redemption" rebounded after a disappointing theatrical release to become one of the most beloved motion pictures in the history of the medium.
Then there's Universal and "Field of Dreams." Kevin Costner was a movie star in 1989 on the strength of "The Untouchables," "No Way Out" and "Bull Durham," but two of those three hits were adult-skewing entertainments that traded heavily on his sex appeal. A ubiquitous presence across lists of favorite films of both hardcore cinephiles and others is The Shawshank Redemption. The film commands one of the highest ratings for a movie on IMDb, signaling its mass popularity and appeal. Tsr was adapted from Stephen King’s novella Rita and The Shawshank Redemption in 1994 and was directed by Frank Darabont. The special place the film has carved for itself in our hearts emanates from its compassionate storytelling and the triumph of the human spirit. The voice-over narration offers beautiful cinematic moments that instill warmth and joy.
It’s been difficult for filmmakers following Darabont to emulate the feat. There’s simply been no match in terms of character exposition and the gamut of themes the film explores. However, quite a few films have touched upon various aspects of The Shawshank Redemption, like the endurance of the human spirit, the value of friendship, and escape from prison.

The career of genre filmmaker Mike Flanagan is strongly tied to the works of author Stephen King. Flanagan has directed film adaptations of the King novels Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep. He tried and failed to bring an adaptation of King’s Revival to the screen. His upcoming film The Life of Chuck is another King adaptation, he’s developing the author’s Dark Tower saga as a Prime Video series, and we recently heard that he’ll be turning Carrie into an eight episode Prime Video series. He knows his King – which is why Movieweb asked him to name some of the most underrated King adaptations. Flanagan gladly did, mentioning a few great ones.
When Movieweb asked which King adaptations he thinks are underrated, Flanagan answered, “You know what jumped immediately to my mind? The Night Flier with Miguel Ferrer is a really good movie that I don’t...

Earlier this year, an adaptation of the Stephen King novel The Long Walk (which was, like The Running Man and Thinner, published under the pen name Richard Bachman) went into production, with director Francis Lawrence, whose previous credits include Constantine, I Am Legend, Water for Elephants, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Parts 1 and 2, Red Sparrow, Slumberland, and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, at the helm. Now, cast member Judy Greer (the Halloween and Ant-Man franchises) has said that the film Lawrence has made out of King’s story is beautiful and dark.

Let’s talk about Tom Cruise, shall we? You know, that guy who’s been running on our screens since forever. From his breakout role in Taps (1981) to becoming Hollywood’s go-to action superstar, Cruise has pretty much nailed the whole “movie star” thing. With mega-hits like Top Gun (1986), Mission: Impossible (1996), and Jerry Maguire (1996) he’s basically become a one-man box office machine, casually raking in billions of dollars worldwide.

Production reached the halfway point in July after kicking off in January 2024.

The Duffer Brothers’ “Stranger Things” is coming back next year. And we have some new details.
As part of Stranger Things Day, the annual celebration of all things Hawkins, Indiana that coincides with the day that Will Bowers disappeared, Netflix announced when the new season will take place, and crucially, the titles for the final eight episodes of the beloved series. Watch the teaser below and we will break it down.
“In the fall of 1987,” the teaser states, “one last adventure begins.” (There had been speculation that the final season would take place at Christmas – could it be so epic that it stretches from the fall to the winter?) Interestingly, 1987 was the year of “The Lost Boys,” “Spaceballs,” “Robocop,” “Adventures in Babysitting” and “Batteries Not Included” – all, undoubtedly, hallmarks for the series. Some of the top 10 songs from that year included “Walk Like an Egyptian” by The Bangles, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody...

Bill Murray’s past arrest for attempting to smuggle marijuana on a plane (Photo Credit – Wikipedia)
Let’s rewind to September 21, 1970. Bill Murray had just hit the big 2-0, and instead of basking in birthday glory, he stumbled into a comedy of errors at O’Hare International Airport. After a cozy family birthday bash in Chicago, young Bill was ready to jet off to Denver for some serious pre-med studies at Regis College. But instead of focusing on anatomy, he made a joke that would turn his birthday into a legendary fiasco.
While waiting to board, Murray casually told a fellow passenger that he was carrying “two bombs” in his suitcase and joking, right? Wrong! A nearby ticket agent didn’t see the punchline and called in U.S. marshals faster than you can say “Groundhog Day.” When they rifled through his luggage, they didn’t find explosives but rather...

Stephen King is known for his works of horror, but every now and then, he strays outside of his established genre. His anthology book "Different Seasons" forgoes the supernatural for more grounded stories like "The Body" (adapted to the screen as "Stand By Me") and "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption". One of King's more recent non-horror books was "Billy Summers," a drama-thriller published in 2021. At times, "Billy Summers" reads as if King binged a bunch of episodes of the great HBO series "Barry" and said, "Let me try that, but without the jokes."
The story follows a Marine sniper-turned-hitman, the titular Billy Summers, who is ready to get out of the "killing people" business. He agrees to take one last job, and this job requires some prep work, including creating a cover story. The cover story Billy concocts has him posing as a writer penning a book, and to help sell the illusion,...

Stephen King is one of the most celebrated and iconic horror writers of all time, but he's also a storyteller whose work has been adapted into dozens of movies and TV shows with, shall we say, mixed results. While some of the very best films of all time are based on King's work like "The Shining" and "The Shawshank Redemption," there are plenty of utter trash movies that have a "based on the novel by Stephen King" credit. Still, even if they may be a toss coin in terms of quality a lot of the time, any new Stephen King adaptation is at least worth paying attention to.

If there's one thing Stephen King knows pretty well, it's villains. The prolific horror author has been writing basically nonstop since he released "Carrie," his debut novel, back in 1974, and his work has been endlessly adapted for both the big and small screen. In 2009, he even compiled a list of his favorite villains that he didn't create, and it's a pretty solid rundown — which certainly isn't surprising.
From literary icons to on-screen favorites to a villain with a confusingly familiar name — I'll clarify that whole thing when we arrive at that point — here are Stephen King's top ten villains of all time, whom he ranked for Entertainment Weekly at the close of the aughts. King ranked his top 10 from "least villainous" to "most villainous," apparently, so we've preserved that order here.

Box office bashes are often cinematic events on their own. While audiences are much more conscious about where their films come from and where their loyalties lie, there were times when films from multiple A-list actors would battle it out at the box office.

Tom Hanks, John Travolta, and Morgan Freeman are some of the best actors in the business, and each has delivered some of the greatest films to come out of the industry. While nowadays these actors have found themselves attached to franchises in a bid to stay relevant, there was a time when there was more for them to do with the films that they put out, which also butt heads at the box office.

Well, the thing about Brad Pitt is that once he walks into a camera frame, it is almost impossible to not have one’s focus entirely locked onto his face, with a total disregard for the backdrop and rest of the players. With his effortless magnetism that seems to suction every light molecule toward his direction, Pitt has made a career that defies his superficial beauty and leans into his creative and artistic exploits.

David Fincher, being one of the oldest and long-time collaborators of Pitt knows all of this, having directed him in 3 movies since their Oscar-nominated 1995 film, Seven. However, it is neither Seven nor Fight Club (for which they reunited again in 1998) that Fincher considers Pitt’s ultimate cinematic pinnacle. That unique credit goes to another movie entirely.

There is simply no arguing with Frank Darabont: the man who brought us The Shawshank Redemption and The Walking Dead, two of the greatest existentially dramatic pieces of film/television in pop culture history. Nominated for 3 Academy Awards, the filmmaker has been behind some of the best (and some of the worst) films in Hollywood simultaneously.
The Green Mile [Credit: Warner Bros.]
When it comes to Darabont’s work as a director, Tom Hanks’ 1999 film The Green Mile definitely falls into the “one of the best” category. A stylized tale of magical realism set on death row, this 4 Oscars-nominated movie was a masterclass in acting, directing, and storytelling cobbled together to give the audience an unforgettable experience.

Stephen King is wildly prolific. That may be an understatement but it's still worth pointing out. Not only does the man have an impressive level of output, but King's stuff is consistently very popular. As such, for virtually as long as he's been a writer, his works have been adapted for the screen, both big and small. Sometimes that goes well, with King being particularly fond of "The Shawshank Redemption" and "Stand By Me," as a couple of examples. Naturally, Hollywood being Hollywood, those adaptations aren't going to work sometimes. For his part, King was willing to call at least one of them an outright trainwreck.
In a 2007 interview with Time, King was asked about quality control as it relates to adaptations of his work. For starters, the author made it clear that he doesn't generally maintain a lot of control in that department.

After being delayed several months by the writers strike and the actors strike, season 5 of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things (which is also the last season of the show) finally went into production at the start of the year and is now deep into its twelve month shooting schedule… and during an appearance at the Happy Sad Confused podcast’s 10th anniversary celebration, cast member David Harbour said the series finale will be worth the wait, because it’s the best episode they’ve ever done.
Stranger Things has the following synopsis: A love letter to the ‘80s classic genre films that captivated a generation, Stranger Things is a thrilling drama set in the seemingly normal Midwestern town of Hawkins, Indiana. After a boy vanishes into thin air, his close-knit group of friends and family search for answers and are pulled into a high-stakes and deadly series of events.

Introduction With such stories as ‘The Shining’ and ‘Carrie’ under his belt, many associate the writer Stephen King with horror. From horror stories about killer clowns to thrillers about obsessive fans, Stephen King is considered by many as one of the masters of horror. With this title though, Stephen King is not just exclusively a horror writer since he has always written dramatic stories. Some of the most popular films that were adapted from Stephen King’s writing aren’t horror at all but are instead thoughtful and emotional dramas. From ‘Stand By Me’ to ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ to ‘The Green Mile,’ Stephen King’s non-horror stories are triumphant portrayals of friendship, life, and even death. Finding Humanity Through Friendship The non-horror stories of Stephen King have a strong focus on friendship. More than that, these stories focus on unconventional friendships and how these friendships reveal the humanity of people.

Actor Morgan Freeman is best known for his role as Red in The Shawshank Redemption. However, he has also played a variety of roles that have become a staple in pop culture, such as Lucius Fox in The Dark Knight trilogy, Nelson Mandela in Invictus, and Hoke Colburn in Driving Miss Daisy.
While he finally won the Oscar for Million Dollar Baby, Freeman named his first-ever Oscar-nominated role as Fast Black in Street Smart as his favorite. Freeman reportedly called the Christopher Reeve starrer his breakout role. Despite it being his favorite performance, Freeman admitted that he would never do something like that again.

She was the first American actress to marry a prince, the first actress to dance with both Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly, one of the first pin-up girls of the 1940s and the first celebrity to bring awareness to Alzheimer’s Disease. She was the “Love Goddess,” Rita Hayworth.
Hayworth was born on October 17, 1918, in Brooklyn as Margarita Carmen Cansino, into a family of Spanish dancers. Although she later claimed she didn’t care for it, Hayworth started dancing at a young age to please her father. They performed together as the Dancing Cansinos from the time she was 12-years-old. She began landing small film roles in her teens under the name Rita Cansino, eventually earning a contract with Columbia Pictures. There she was “Americanized” by changing her last name to her Irish mother’s maiden name of Hayworth, dying her dark hair red and having electrolysis to raise her hairline.

Forrest Gump gets a bad rap. In hindsight, it’s easy to dismiss Robert Zemeckis’s film, which starred Tom Hanks as the simple (but sweet) title character as cheesy. This is especially true if you compare it to the movies it beat at the Academy Awards that year – Pulp Fiction and The Shawshank Redemption – both of which have gone on to become unchallengeable classics. But the fact remains that Forrest Gump was a monster hit in 1994, with it the second highest-grossing movie of the year (behind The Lion King) and a signature role (for a while) for star Tom Hanks.
In this adaptation of the Winston Groom novel, Forrest Gump bears witness to most of the defining events of the second half of the twentieth century, including the Vietnam War, Watergate, and, eventually, the AIDS Crisis. The film was a landmark in VFX, as Tom Hanks was able to...

Directed by Frank Darabont and starring Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins, The Shawshank Redemption has become a beloved classic, celebrated for its themes of hope, friendship, and its broad appeal. While the film has earned such an acclaimed status over the past three decades, the film was not a major box-office success upon its initial release.

It’s hard to imagine a year going by without one of Stephen King’s horror stories being adapted for the big or small screen.
Some of those adaptations have gone on to be some of the most recognizable movies around – films like “The Shining,” “The Shawshank Redemption,” and “The Green Mile” to name a few – but a disturbing trend lately is circling back to certain stories for new attempts at adapting.
“It” got split into two movies at the end of the 2010s, “Pet Semetary” has had multiple films, “The Stand” has received multiple limited series adaptations, and now “Salem’s Lot” has been done for the third time. It’s time for something new.
King is one of the most prolific American writers to live. He’s penned more than 65 novels, to say nothing of the countless short stories. There’s a gold mine of horror, sci-fi and everything...

Exactly 30 years after “The Shawshank Redemption,” director Frank Darabont is helming his next massive project: Two episodes of blockbuster series “Stranger Things 5.”
Darabont famously stepped away from filmmaking after his short-lived TNT series “Mob City” that aired for one season in 2013. His last film was 2007’s “The Mist,” adapted from a Stephen King novel. Now, “The Green Mile” helmer is explaining why he came out of an 11-year retirement to direct two episodes of the fifth and final season of “Stranger Things.”
“What really dragged me out of retirement was that my wife and I really love this show,” Darabont told The Daily Beast about the viral Netflix sci-fi series. “Our content now is so filled with horrible people doing horrible things for greedy reasons but ‘Stranger Things’ has so much heart. That positivity is something I really responded to.”

Thanks to projects like The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, director Frank Darabont has proven himself to be one of the finest directors of all time. The Shawshank Redemption won the Academy Award for Best Picture and is widely regarded as one of the greatest movies ever. Despite entering retirement over a decade ago, Darabont has decided to return to helm one more project: Stranger Things 5.
Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer have entrusted Darabont with directing two episodes of the upcoming final season. Darabont has been out of the business for a while now. His last directorial work came in the form of Mob City in 2013, which was prematurely axed. He was the showrunner for the first two seasons of AMC's The Walking Dead before stepping down, supposedly due to budgeting disagreements with the network.
So what about Stranger Things excited him enough to come out of an 11-year retirement?...
