We’ve had Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey as well as its sequel, and a horror movie centred around Bambi is on the way. But the film that must really piss Disney off is The Mouse Trap. Filmed as Mickey’s Mouse Trap, which was probably a bit too much for the lawyers to allow, it turns their iconic rodent, or someone dressed him, into a psychotic killer.

A film like The Mouse Trap is only possible because the original Mickey Mouse cartoon, Steamboat Willie, finally slipped out from under copyright protection and into the public domain. So now Mickey, or the version of him in that cartoon, is fair game for other filmmakers. Something that a Star Wars-style open text crawl reminds the viewer of.

Prime Video is the place to be in August with an incredible month of new releases. The month kicks off with the premiere of the animated series Batman: Caped Crusader on Aug. 1. The series was produced by J.J. Abrams and The Batman‘s Matt Reeves. We also return to Middle Earth this month with the premiere of The Rings of Power season 2 on Aug. 29.

As far as movies go, the Amazon original Jackpot! arrives on Aug. 15 starring Awkwafina and John Cena. This comedy is set in a world where Lottery winners have to survive until sundown in order to claim their multi-billion dollar jackpot – anyone who kills them before that gets to claim their prize.

The Hobbit trilogy also joins the Prime Video library this month, as do 21 and 22 Jump Street, Superman I-iv, Superman Returns, Night Swim, Drive Away Dolls, and 10 Cloverfield Lane.

In the spirit of such pics like Cheech and Chong’s Up In Smoke, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure and Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, Toad tells the tale of two naive slackers, Sam (played by James Paxton of Twisters and Rifkin’s western Last Train to Fortune) and Alex (Oliver Wyman of Feeling Randy), who are hired by a frightening cartel boss to deliver a cardboard box from LA to Vegas for the tidy sum of $10k. The boys think it’s their lucky day. Instructed not to look in the box, the duo can’t contain their curiosity and as soon as they drive off the property they pull over and have a peek.

Searchlight Pictures vice president of national publicity Diana Loomis is leaving the studio after nearly 20 years, TheWrap has confirmed.

Loomis, who began at the studio back in 2006 (her first movie was “Little Miss Sunshine”) and previously served as head of the studio’s East Coast office, will leave at the end of the summer following her work on Searchlight titles “Flamin’ Hot,” “Theater Camp” and “Poor Things.” She will then launch a consulting operation specializing in theatrical and streaming releases, and awards campaigns for movie studios and streaming companies.

During her tenure at Searchlight, Loomis worked on the campaigns for five Best Picture Oscar winners – “Slumdog Millionaire,” “12 Years a Slave,” “Birdman,” “The Shape of Water” and “Nomadland.” Additionally, she worked on the rollout of more recent awards favorites like “The Banshees and Inisherin” and “Nightmare Alley.”

Prime Video has adapted the one-woman podcast “Empanada Loca” into a new series. “The Horror of Dolores Roach” will begin streaming on the service on July 7. Buckle up, because this one is gruesome. Roach (Justina Machado) returns to a gentrified Washington Heights after a long prison sentence and works as a masseuse in the basement of a friend’s empanada shop. But when her security is threatened, Roach is driven to extremes to survive.

Season 2 of “Good Omens” also will premiere on Prime Video in July. Arriving July 28, the series focuses on the friendship between Aziraphale (Michael Sheen), a fussy angel and rare-book dealer, and the snarky demon Crowley (David Tennant). While the Apocalypse has been averted, the pair are back living their lives in London, until the archangel Gabriel shows up. The series is based on the novel by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett.

Sure, the Marvel Cinematic Universe may be the biggest franchise in the history of cinema, but it took an army of filmmakers and independent superheros to become what it is. If there is one, single unquestioned king of the box office, it is undoubtedly James Cameron. The man, as it stands, has made three of the four highest-grossing movies of all time, with "Avatar," "Avatar: The Way of Water," and "Titanic." The latter was released way back in 1997 and it still managed to cross the 2 billion mark in global ticket sales, something no other film did until (checks notes) "Avatar" in 2009. In its initial run, the film earned 1.84 billion, before subsequent re-releases took it all the way up to 2.19 billion.

No other film in history had a run quite like that of "Titanic," which topped the charts at the domestic box office for an absolutely staggering 15 weekends in a row.

Seven proved to be lucky indeed for stage, screen and TV vet Nathan Lane, who at long last won an Emmy at the Creative Arts Emmys on Sept. 4 for his turn as a food magnate embroiled in a murder mystery with his deaf son (James Caverly) in Hulu’s series “Only Murders in the Building.”

The three-time Tony-winning actor, best known for his memorable roles in films like “The Birdcage” and “Mouse Hunt,” as well as series such as “American Crime Story” and “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels,” became the most nominated guest actor in history this year. His Guest Actor in a Comedy Series nomination for “Only Murders” arrived after six previous nods for scene-stealing roles in “The Good Wife,” “Modern Family,” “Frasier” and “Mad About You.”

Say what you will about Gore Verbinski's "Pirates of the Caribbean" trilogy, but one cannot accuse the director of phoning things in. The first of the "Pirates" films, "The Curse of the Black Pearl" in 2003, was a grand ol' time, deftly wedding an old-school swashbuckler with elements from the famed Disney theme park ride and a wry sense of wit provided by "Aladdin" and "Shrek" co-writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio. Over 654 million later, Elliott, Rossio, and Verbinski reunited to shoot a pair of back-to-back sequels in the hopes of bottling lightning two more times. The results, put plainly, are a lot, but again, the opposite of phoning things in.

In one of their first major moves after Entertainment One’s $4 billion acquisition by toy maker Hasbro was completed in early 2020, Entertainment One’s President and CEO Darren Throop and President of Film and Television Steve Bertram set out to find a Head of Television. They brought in former HBO President of Programming Michael Lombardo, initially as a consultant. Since he was named President of Global Television in June 2020, Lombardo has led a ramp-up of TV projects based on Hasbro properties as well as original ideas. Of the Hasbro IP, a big priority for the company is to develop scripted and unscripted series based on the classic Dungeons & Dragon game, Lombardo said in an extensive interview with Deadline about his programming strategy.

LeVar Burton is set to host a game show version of the classic trivia game “Trivial Pursuit,” which is currently in development at Entertainment One (eOne).

“’Trivial Pursuit’ is one of the best-known brands in the gaming universe,” Burton said. “I am thrilled to have partnered with Hasbro and eOne to bring this beloved game to market as a premium show for television.”

The hosting gig is part of a deal between eOne, which is owned by Hasbro, and Burton’s LeVar Burton Entertainment (Lbe) to develop “Trivial Pursuit” into a game show format. Burton will also executive produce the series along with Lbe’s Sangita Patel and Tara Long and Geno McDermott from eOne. No network is currently attached to the series.

Play-Doh is getting its own competition format special.

Sarah Hyland is to host Play-Doh Squished, a holiday-special based on the mushy kids toy for Amazon-owned AVOD service IMDb TV.

The Modern Family star will serve as a host, judge and exec producer on the special, which comes from eOne, Hasbro and Amazon Studios.

The one-hour show will launch on December 10.

It will feature three teams of two kids and two adults competing in a series of physical and creative challenges. The reality competition special is set in a Play-Doh winter wonderland, where each team must combine imagination, inspiration, and holiday spirit to win the final cash prize.

Exclusive: Disney is shuttering Blue Sky Studios, the $5.9 billion global grossing former 20th Century Fox animation division which during its run churned out 13 features including the Ice Age franchise.

One can say that the writing was always on the wall for Blue Sky, especially after Disney acquired 20th Century Studios and its assets in March 2019. However, the past year has been challenging for Disney on many fronts, of course due to the pandemic, not just on the studio side but with theme park closures and cruise line dockings as well. Sustaining a third feature animation studio was no longer viable for Disney given the current economic realities caused by Covid. The last day for Blue Sky will be in April. The number of Blue Sky employees being impacted numbers 450. Disney will be working with the employees at the Greenwich, Ct based animation house to explore open positions at the other internal studios.

A new year means a new start. But in its list of new year releases for January 2021, Hulu is sending a message of…eh, we’ll get the year started in February. Not to be overly rude to the usually sturdy streaming service, but there’s not much going on for Hulu in 2021’s first month.

Perhaps the biggest release of note is something that already enjoyed a successful release for ITV in the U.K. The Sister is the lates thriller from Neil Cross (Luther) and it makes its U.S. debut on Hulu on Jan. 22. 2020 comedies Save Yourselves and Like a Boss both arrive on Jan. 1. Hulu original film The Ultimate Playlist of Noise premieres on Jan. 15 and TV series Everyone is Doing Great arrives on Jan. 13.

Hulu is kicking off the new year in style next month, with January set to deliver a ton of fresh titles to the Disney-owned streaming service. There’s a bunch of original content landing throughout the first few weeks of 2021, but probably the highlight is the incredible number of classic movies that are going up on the site on New Year’s Day. Whether you’re in the mood for iconic comedies, dramas, animated efforts or sci-fi flicks, there’s something for you on the way.

There are well over 100 films being added to Hulu’s library on January 1st, so let’s just pick out a few notable titles. The full Austin Powers trilogy is among them, and if you can’t get enough of Mike Myers, the first Shrek likewise becomes available. For dramas, there’s Robert Downey Jr. biopic Chaplin, Johnny Depp vehicle Donnie Brasco and Jim Carrey’s The Truman Show.

When it came to dreaming up characters of cheeky grandiosity who were put on earth to act out their fear and loathing of children, Roald Dahl didn’t play. In 1961, his first classic novel, “James and the Giant Peach,” featured the loathsome Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker, who tormented James like nightmare Victorian spinsters out of Dickens. The title character of “The Enormous Crocodile” wants nothing more than to chomp down on children. In “Matilda,” Miss Trunchbull is a school headmistress so sadistic she’s like a bullying tyrant out of Pink Floyd’s “The Wall.” And in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” even that rock star of candy Willy Wonka can’t seem to make up his mind about whether he wants to delight children or unsettle them.

Along with Hulu originals like the horror anthology “Into the Dark” and the second season of Stephen King’s “Castle Rock,” the streamer is also offering films from the “Saw,” “Blade” and “Hellraiser” franchises beginning next month. For the more faint of heart, Hulu is also offering three seasons of Food Network’s “Halloween Wars” and the surely adorable “Kids Halloween Baking Championship.”

Not specifically Halloween-themed, but potentially haunting: All six seasons of the original run of “The Hills” will be available to stream on Oct. 1 for those looking to revisit the halcyon days of reality television and questionable late-aughts fashion.

Amazon Prime Video has confirmed that five original shows will be debuting new episodes on the streaming service in September. Among these are the first seasons of the groundbreaking animated series “Undone,” which will be available in both 4K and Hrd, and the German import “Chris Tall Presentes,” an unscripted series starring the comedian. Another animated series, “Niko And The Sword of Light,” returns for a sophomore season. And “Transparent” will sign off with a sung finale.

The Amazon original film “Late Night” will start streaming justt a few months after its successful theatrical run. Mindy Kaling both wrote and starred in this wry look at the world of TV, with Emma Thompson stealing scenes as the beleaguered host of a failing talk show.

Amazon is out with its list of new additions coming to Prime Video next month, and you’ll want to mark your calendar for the epic musical finale of “Transparent,” coming Sept. 27.

“Chris Tall Presents…” — the first unscripted German Amazon Original which features six episodes of the comedian performing stand-up and introducing his friends as guests — will premiere at a date still to be determined. The same is the case for “Family Man,” a new Amazon Original series which, according to the streaming giant, tells the story of a middle-class man who works for a special cell of the National Investigation Agency.

Other Prime Originals include the first seasons of “El Corazón de Sergio Ramos,” about the Spanish soccer player, and the animated series “Undone.” “Rango,” “Legally Blonde” and “Saturday Night Fever” are among some of the already released movies that will now be available on Prime.

Before we get to your Amazon Prime June updates, the streaming service has a special surprise for its members: every season of “Dawson’s Creek” is available now, and you don’t even have to wait until next month.

Starting June 1, stream “All or Nothing” which follows the New Zealand rugby team the All Blacks throughout their 2017 season. On June 3, you can stream the Oscar-nominated “Lady Bird,” followed by Amazon Original series “Goliath” Season 2 on June 15.

Mousehunt, starring Lee Evans and Nathan Lane, is a gleefully dark family movie, that's well worth revisiting...

If you're a horror fan you may have been intrigued by the recent film A Cure For Wellness. A mainstream oddity: a big budget, art-house horror, built on atmospherics instead of jump scares, which seems to be a state of society analysis about the wrongs of humanity, but actually unveils itself to be a Hammer Horror-esque slice of gothic fun.

This from the director most famously known for the Pirates Of The Caribbean films, or more recently Rango and The Lone Ranger. Okay, that's discounting his Us remake of Ringu, but in fact I'd argue this off kilter darkness mixed with a fun aesthetic can be traced back to his feature length directorial debut, Mousehunt.

On the surface it looks like a knockabout comedy aimed at kids, and/or families,...

Jason Isaacs as Dr. Volmer in A Cure for WellnessIt starts with a whispered melody. It will send frissons of familiarity, of a kind of upsetting longing for clarity. You know that song the odd English girl is singing, but you can't place it. Neither can Lockhart (Dane DeHaan, who they might have called Lockjaw, as he can barely seem to spit his words out), which is what draws him into the guts of a mystery. And it draws the film into a slithering spiral, compels us to observe an autopsy of modern horror. What half-remembered giallo fugue is Gore Verbinski spooning up for us like medicine, pinioned to our chairs like one of the zombie patients in the film’s sinister clinic? A puzzle picture, a conspiracy thriller, a kind of baroque classical nightmare, A Cure For Wellness is too sturdy, busy and sure of itself to be much of a horror film.

In addition to fake news, “A Cure for Wellness” is also being promoted via more conventional means, namely a reddit Ama with director Gore Verbinski. The helmer, formerly of “The Ring” and “Pirates of the Caribbean,” fielded questions about the inspiration for his strange new thriller, whether “Rango” will ever receive a sequel and whatever happened to his “Bioshock” adaptation (spoiler alert: not happening anytime soon).

On the “Rango” sequel:

“I don’t think so. I think that we put everything we possibly could into ‘Rango’ and I guess you never say never, but I would like to go back into animation again. But try something completely different.”

On his movie based on “Bioshock,” a popular video game:

When Blue Sky Studios was tasked with creating swimming CGI Xenomorphs for the fourth film in the Alien franchise, its animators looked to inspiration from the natural world. Aptly for Hr Giger’s demonic creations, said inspiration was found in a Galapagos Island creature nicknamed by Charles Darwin the “imp of darkness”.

“We patterned [the Xenomorphs’] movements on reference footage of sea iguanas” Blue Sky’s Digital Effects Supervisor for Alien: Resurrection Mitch Kopelman told American Cinematographer magazine in November 1997. “They have this crazy little swim where they tuck their legs under their bodies and use this really long tail to propel themselves.” After much work, the end result was the CGI swimming aliens that pursued Ellen Ripley and co. through the flooded kitchens of the Usm Auriga in the 1997 sequel.

When I sit through a film such as Zootropolis, Rango, Frozen, Wreck-It Ralph, Eddie The Eagle or Coraline, I can’t help but be thankful somebody has bothered. As a parent as well as a movie lover, I’ve grown to really dislike family movies that just turn up to act as a surrogate babysitter for 90 minutes, with no intention of becoming anybody’s favourite film. Lee Evans has revealed that he has no plans to return to Hollywood, describing his experience of working in movies in the '90s as "terrible" and "lonely".

In an interview with Phill Jupitus on the behalf of Digital Spy, Evans spoke candidly about his time in the Us, when he starred in movies such as The Fifth Element, MouseHunt and There's Something About Mary.

"It was terrible," said Evans. "It was really lonely. I lived there for two years.

"I learnt a lot - I would never trade that for anything - but on a personal level, I really missed my wife and daughter.

"If I ever went back. I'd have to go in and get straight out."

Evans was coy when asked whether it was true that he turned down a movie offer from Martin Scorsese, revealing that he did speak with the iconic director at a three-hour meeting in a London hotel.

(Cbr) Peeps might have gone from the love-it-or-hate-it candy of springtime to the stuff that dioramas are built from, but can they make the even larger leap to the big screen? Deadline reports Adam Rifkin ("Detroit Rock City") thinks the answer will be a resounding yes. The filmmaker recently snatched up the movie rights from Pennsylvania-based candy company First Born. He intends to set the "Lego Movie"-esque project at one of the aforementioned diorama contests. One particular Peep gets lost and must journey through a variety of diorama-based scenes before returning home. Rifkin, who has penned films like "Underdog" and "Mousehunt", will write the script.

Just two days after Easter brought religious people another moving Sunday, and people who love candy a series of pastel colored chocolates and edible bunnies, one of the signature candies of the spring holiday just struck a movie deal. Deadline reports Adam Rifkin, known for writing family fare like Mousehunt, Underdog and Small Soldiers and directing films like Detroit Rock City and The Chase, has optioned the rights to the sugary, marshmallow candy Peeps into a feature film and maybe even a TV series.
