All of the actors recreate their stage roles with the exception of Nathan Lane, who was replaced by Jason Alexander. Lane was, at the time, tied to the Broadway revival of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," which ran between 1996-1998 and relied heavily upon his drawing power to meet its weekly nut.
The Broadway run of "Love! Valour! Compassion!" by Terrence McNally opened at the Walter Kerr Theater on Feb. 14, 1995, ran for 248 performances and won the 1995 Tony Award for Best Play.
The play was originally produced Off-Broadway, in New York City, on 11 October 1994, by the Manhattan Theatre Club, with funds provided by AT&T.
John Glover won the 1995 Tony Award for Supporting or Featured Actor in a Drama for the Broadway production.
Stephen Bogardus was nominated for the 1995 Tony Award for Supporting or Featured Actor in a Drama, for the Broadway production.
