I do not think "...Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya" is a bad film--as it's current rating of 4.3 would seem to indicate. On the other hand, the film certainly has its flaws and is really no more than an incredibly nice looking time passer. It should have been better.
The story in "...Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya" is a bit confusing and is a bit like snippets of several different love stories all tossed together. It begins with a young woman, Ashi (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan), being told that her family was arranging a marriage for her. However, a friend recently learned that her arranged husband was horrible--and Ashi is afraid this could also happen to her. So, she gets her family to agree to let her travel to Switzerland to meet him and determine what sort of man he really is. And, as part of her plan, she will not initially tell him who she is. Once there, she meets a very handsome man but with all his lying and her lying, it really does get a bit confusing. And, out of the blue, several STRANGE twists occur--leading to one of the dumbest endings I've seen in a film. MUCH more occurs in between--but because our reviews need to be under 192392341 words (or something like that), I'll get to what I thought of the film...
On the positive side, this is one of the most beautiful films I have seen in ages. Part of it are the stars--Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Bobby Deol. Rai Bachchan in particular is absolutely gorgeous (as always). And, when you put these two handsome actors in the scenery of the Swiss and Bavarian Alps, you can't help but be enthralled. I loved the mountainside scenes (which looked a lot like the setting for "The Sound of Music"). It was a pretty, pretty film. But, on the other hand, the writing was second-rate. In particular, I really hated Rai Bachchan's character for much of the film. She played a VERY clichéd sort--the woman who is angry for no apparent reason! I've seen this in quite a few Indian films, but American ones sometimes use this cliché--one that makes it hard to really like the heroine. Here, she storms around in a perpetual petulant mood for the first half of the film and she was angry that Bobby lied to her---after CONSTANTLY lying to him and behaving terribly. Additionally, the film ended horribly. Not only was the airplane scene stupid and irresponsible (no one can do THAT at the airport without facing years in prison!!), but it was done sloppily. Sometimes the plane was a 747, other times it switched to a different plane! But worse was the CGI used in the climax--it was horribly ugly and looked 100% fake. And, when a film ends this badly, it's bound to leave a lasting impression. Overall, a very flawed film but one you can still enjoy provided you aren't expecting much. But a 4.3?! I don't get such a ridiculously low score.
