The 1990s were a good time to be a fan of Japanese pop culture. After the '80s made gamers out of millions of kids thanks to Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog, it was the '90s when anime started to become mainstream in the U.S. (even if kids didn't know it at the time) thanks to "Pokémon" becoming a worldwide cultural phenomenon. (That and "Sailor Moon" and "Dragon Ball Z" turning kids and teens into lifelong fans of the medium.)
But it wasn't just animation. In live-action, "Power Rangers" brought tokusatsu fun to the West and started a hugely influential superhero franchise that, yes, is still very good. Created by Haim Saban and Shuki Levy in collaboration with Shotaro Ishinomori, the long-running property is mostly made out of reused footage from Ishinomori's iconic tokusatsu series "Super Sentai." This Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once and Always article contains spoilers.
Near the beginning of the Netflix special Power Rangers: Once and Always, the Rangers fight Robo Rita and her newly rebuilt monsters of Minotaur and Snizzard in a graveyard. The Rangers are barely able to hold their own but original Black Ranger Zack leaps into the fray to help Billy the Blue Ranger. This angers Minotaur so much he smashes a gravestone that reads,
“Harvey Garvey. 1953-2022.”
That sure is a name, right? Only in Power Rangers. The shot of the gravestone is held on for just enough time to clue the audience in that this isn’t just a random gravestone placed there by the production team. This is a reference. A deep cut reference at that. Yes, Harvey Garvey is a character in the Power Rangers universe. He’s not a Ranger. He’s not a mentor.

Power Rangers will celebrate its 30th season next year and it’s tackling this anniversary season with a true throwback to the past For most of its life, each new Power Rangers season would feature a completely new cast, story line, and a new adaption of a Japanese Super Sentai series. This somewhat changed starting in 2011 with Power Rangers Samurai where the traditional season was broken into two smaller seasons but it was still business as usual. The only seasons that carried over a large majority of their casts were the first five, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Power Rangers Zeo, Power Rangers Turbo, and Power Rangers in Space.
However, for the first time since those seasons, Power Rangers: Cosmic Fury won’t be introducing a whole new cast. Instead, Cosmic Fury will feature the entire main cast from Power Rangers Dino Fury returning in their same roles. A video from Hasbro Pulse confirmed the news,...

Emmy-nominated film and TV editor Richard Bracken has died. He was 90.
Bracken died Thursday of kidney failure in Chatsworth, California, according to his daughter Kathleen Bracken.
Over the course of his 30 year career, Bracken served as editor for a roster of television classics, including “Columbo,” “The Bold Ones” and “Ironside.” He spent a particularly fruitful number of years working for Oscar-nominated producer Ross Hunter, editing films “The Thrill of It All” and “Madame X,” miniseries “The Moneychangers” and NBC drama “A Family Upside Down,” which starred Fred Astaire and Helen Hayes.
Much of Bracken’s career was dedicated to television, having also worked on NBC drama “Run for Your Life,” ABC American Western series “Alias Smith and Jones” and TV movie “The Jesse Owens Story.” His work was recognized with four Emmy nominations, including for the 1976 TV miniseries “Rich Man, Poor Man” and the Anjelica Huston-starring miniseries “Buffalo Girls...

This Power Rangers Beast Morphers review contains spoilers.
Power Rangers Beast Morphers has fallen into a bit of a rut, hasn’t it? It’s not bad by any stretch of the imagination but it’s not doing much to stand out. Occasionally we’ll get an episode like ‘Artist Anonymous’ but by and large this season (and last season) have all been mediocre. They have some strong ideas that could make for compelling stories but instead we get episodes like this.
‘The Blame Game’ should be a winner since it focuses on the best character in Beast Morphers, Steel. Steel has been a joy from his very first appearance and even in a weaker episode he shines. Here though I’m not quite sure what they were doing with him. I get that he had to learn that not everyone deserves a strict punishment but… what was the point?...

Power Rangers Beast Morphers Season 2 Episode 4
What makes a great Power Rangers episode? Ask any fan of the franchise that question and you’ll get a bevy of answers. Whether you’re talking to a kid who might like “the fighting” or an adult who enjoys the more subtle character moments, no matter who you talk to you’ll never get the same answer. Some might complain about plot holes, others might laugh at them. Some take the megazords battles seriously, others laugh at them for the goofy Godzilla style action. Some enjoy the cheese, some hate Turbo’s “Trouble by the Slice.” They’re wrong, but that’s okay.
So what is the essential building block of a Power Rangers episode? What’s the one thing that can transcend most criticism and help even the silliest or plot hole filled episode?...

The Power Rangers are being rebooted for the big screen and Paramount plans to change things up when it comes to the lineup of individuals who’ll be making up the Mighty Morphin team. And of the many changes set to take place, the studio is reportedly eyeing an Asian actress for the role of the Pink Ranger.
Amy Jo Johnson was the first one to bring the character to life both in the TV series and in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie. She’s reportedly going to make an appearance in the new film as well, as will the rest of the original cast, and since her time piloting the Pterodactyl Zord and wielding her laser bow, there’ve been several different pink-clad Rangers.
According to our sources though – the same ones who told us that Disney is developing a Beauty and the Beast spinoff for Gaston and...

The original Yellow Power Ranger was going to make a cameo before the new generation of Rangers took over.
"Passing of the Torch Part 2" was the end of an era for Power Rangers. Taking place in the series' fifth season, Power Rangers Turbo, it featured the biggest cast change yet. Previous seasons had only switched out one to three Rangers at time but now it was finally decided for a whole new team to be brought on. The final remaining member of the classic Mighty Morphin team, Tommy, left the series along with three other Rangers who had all been around for at least a season and a half.
"Passing of the Torch" established the new team of Rangers along with recent addition Justin and the end of the episode featuring a big ceremony where the old Rangers passed on their powers to the new team. It...

The lost ending to Power Rangers' Millennium Message nearly changed the whole show.
There’s an era of Power Rangers we never got to see. An era that contained different characters, different plots, and perhaps a cast that would have been with the show as long as the famous Tommy had. It all began (and was quietly cut short) with something called The Millennium Message.
The Millennium Message has perplexed Power Rangers fans for years. Originally appearing in the Power Rangers Turbo episode of the same name, the message was brought from the future by Blue Senturion. He was tricked by the season’s main villain, Divatox, into revealing its contents. The part of the message the audience got to see was all about how the universe’s greatest evils would join forces to destroy the Earth.
Another part of the message however played off screen as Blue Senturion said,...

A perennial institution of children’s programming, the Power Rangers have stuck around for 25 seasons of punching rubber monsters in spandex and teaching us all valuable lessons about teamwork. Obviously, its longevity is at least partially due to how cheap it is to make, since every Power Rangers season is mostly repurposed from the long-running Japanese tokusatsu series “Super Sentai,” splicing Japan’s spandex fight footage and Zord fights and filming new stuff with English-speaking actors.
While most Power Rangers seasons can be more than a little formulaic, to say the least, never let it be said the show shied away from the surreal and bizarre. After all, this is a show whose basic plotline was that “teenagers with attitude” get in a giant robot made of dinosaurs to fight ghoulies sent by a witch who lives on the moon, under orders from a floating head in a tube. The...

Update: The rumor of Jason David Frank's involvement has been debunked by Jason David Frank on his official fan page.
I've got a couple bits of new Power Rangers movie news to share with you today. Just yesterday we got our first look at what Goldar will look like in the film, and it was completely trashed by the fans. The images of the villain sparked a little argument with Blake Foster on his Instagram page which caused him to drop a bit of news about the film. In case you don't know who Foster is, he plays Justin Stewart/Blue Ranger in the Power Rangers Turbo series.
It seems like he must have a little inside information because during the argument he said, "you don't even know bro but Jdf is in it so don't come on my page trying to bash people."
Jdf would be short for Jason David Frank,...

So you’ve heard of Power Rangers. Maybe remember watching it as a kid. But recently you’ve noticed, “hey, wait a minute. This show is still on… How???" Of course you might be a little busy to watch nearly nine hundred episodes to find those gems, so here's a sampling to get you started.

For over 25 years, Power Rangers has taken footage from Japanese series Super Sentai wholesale. Here's a season by season look at how.
For any of you not in the know, Power Rangers is not a wholly original show. “No Way!” you may cry. Wait! Don’t go off into the Desert of Despair... let me explain.
Power Rangers takes much of its battle footage from a Japanese program called Super Sentai. Every year since its inception they’ve used footage and even some plotlines from the Japanese program to varying degrees of success. Sometimes the adaptation works and sometimes… well.
We'll just get right into it.
Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger – Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Season 1
Mmpr threw Zyuranger to the wind. It didn’t care what the plot was; it was just bending the footage any way they could to get 40 episodes.
