Lynda Obst, who had producing credits on high-profile films including “Sleepless in Seattle,” “Flashdance” and “Adventures in Babysitting,” died Tuesday in Los Angeles. She was 74.
“I was immensely proud of her. She was a trailblazer for women in the industry at a time when it was very difficult for women to have prominent roles. She was passionate about her work but even more passionate about her family,” her brother, WME’s Rick Rosen, said to Variety.
Obst told the Hollywood Reporter earlier this year that she had been battling chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Most recently, she served as producer or executive producer on TV series including “The Hot Zone,” “Good Girls Revolt,” “Hot in Cleveland” and “Helix.” Obst’s final feature producing credit was Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar” in 2014. Among her other credits were “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” “Hope Floats,” “Bad Girls” and “The Fisher King.

Outside of established IP, there are few sure things in Hollywood filmmaking. There was a time when John Wayne astride a horse was a license to print money, ditto Clint Eastwood (who also packed 'em in whilst brandishing a shield and a hand cannon). And there was that remarkable decade-long run where Rob Reiner standing behind the camera meant guaranteed critical, if not full-on commercial success.
Hot streaks don't just happen like this, so when it looks like a shooter is heating up, studios line up to place the heaviest of bets on their next roll. Such was the case with the team of star Will Smith and director Barry Sonnenfeld after the blockbuster breakthrough of 1997's "Men in Black." This was Smith's first smash outside of an ensemble (one he almost turned down), and Sonnenfeld's fourth box office hit after "The Addams Family,...

When the end of Yellowstone was officially announced last year, Paramount Network had set the wheels in motion for two more spinoffs. There was the prequel series, to be set in 1944, and then the present-day continuation, set to take place after the events of Yellowstone, which had the working title 2024.
Now, that sequel series is very much beginning to take shape.
That series will be titled The Madison and will star Michelle Pfeiffer, and it will be the next series to rollout in the Yellowstone universe. The Oscar-nominated movie star will also executive produce the new series from franchise boss Taylor Sheridan.
The Madison is described as a heartfelt study of grief and human connection following a New York City family in the Madison River valley of central Montana.
“Michelle Pfeiffer is a remarkable talent who imbues every role with emotional depth, authenticity and grace,” said Chris McCarthy, Paramount Global Co-CEO and President/CEO,...

These days, it feels like George Clooney is known more for his political opinions than his acting career. Billions earned at the box office? Meh. Billions more raised in advocacy, humanitarian efforts, and charity? Yawn. Two-time People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive? Getting closer, but nah. Donald Trump calls you a “rat” on Truth Social? That’s when you know you’ve made it.
Believe it or not, George Clooney used to be famous for something other than his political flip-flops. Well, hold onto your hats because there was actually a time before Clooney’s latest head-scratcher: penning a New York Times op-ed calling Joe Biden unfit for office mere weeks after throwing him the mother of all fundraisers. Yes, you heard that right – he hosted a record-breaking cash bash for Biden, the biggest ever for a Democrat candidate, then declared to the world that the guy shouldn’t run.

There are all other songwriters, and then there is Carole King. Nobody’s ever had an epic career quite like the Brooklyn girl who spent the Sixties writing classic hits for other artists—then spent the Seventies writing her own. With her 1971 solo classic Tapestry, she set the standards that all young singer-songwriters still aspire to reach. She’s always gone her own way as a performer, a composer, an environmental activist. When Taylor Swift inducted King into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2023, she simply called her...

It is a plight common to most professional songwriters: Everyone knows their songs, but few people know who they are.
And it’s hard to think of a more vivid example of that syndrome than Gerry Goffin, Carole King’s late ex-husband and longtime writing partner, who was responsible for the lyrics of such timeless songs as “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?,” “You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman,” “Up on the Roof,” “The Loco-Motion,” “One Fine Day” and dozens more — he wrote the lyrics for a total of 114 Billboard Hot 100 hits for artists including Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, Rod Stewart, Natalie Cole, James Taylor, Ray Charles, Whitney Houston, Kylie Minogue and of course, King.
Goffin’s story will finally be told in “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?,” a documentary — named after his and King’s first-ever No. 1 hit, written in 1960 when he was 20 and...

Oscar nominations were announced in Los Angeles at 5:30 a.m. on Jan. 23. The backlash began by sunrise. Barbie received eight nominations, including for best picture, but where were individual nods for director Greta Gerwig or star Margot Robbie, the A-list architects who constructed a billion-dollar blockbuster out of an $18 plastic doll that was born in 1959? Barbie fans went berserk online, denouncing the Academy for what they saw as a sexist snub. Breathless press coverage of the controversy dominated the news cycle for days, and even Hillary Clinton weighed in to support her shunned sisters.
By Jan. 26, producer Lynda Obst had heard enough. “I have to write about this misplaced horror,” Obst unloaded on Facebook, offering a history lesson pulled from personal experience, reminding her readers that comedies rarely fare well at the Academy Awards in top categories. Furthermore, she and best friend Nora Ephron “didn’t flip out” when...

Garth Craven, the British-born sound and film editor and second-unit director whose credits included six Sam Peckinpah features, as well as Turner and Hooch, My Best Friend’s Wedding and Legally Blonde, has died. He was 84.

British moviegoers will have to wait a while longer to see romantic comedy “Ticket to Paradise.”
The Julia Roberts and George Clooney rom-com was set to premiere Friday, September 16 in the UK. The film will instead launch Tuesday September 20 in UK theaters “out of respect to the Royal Family” following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
Universal issued a statement (via Deadline) that the delayed release was in honor of the monarchy. The new release date is the day after the queen’s funeral. Ol Parker directs “Ticket to Paradise.”
“With the passing of Her Majesty the Queen, Universal, Working Title, Julia Roberts, George Clooney, and director Ol Parker have all decided to delay the opening of ‘Ticket to Paradise’ in the UK until after the Queen’s funeral out of respect to the Royal Family and the people of Great Britain and Northern Ireland,” a statement read.

George Clooney may have won two Oscars, acted in over 80 projects, and reigned as one of the most famous actors on the planet for decades, but he still doesn’t believe he’s mastered the rom-com genre.
Clooney, who stars opposite Julia Roberts in the upcoming comedy “Ticket to Paradise,” in theaters October 21, told The New York Times that it’s been 28 years since he has acted in a rom-com film (apparently not counting “Intolerable Cruelty” in 2003).
“They sent me the script [for ‘Ticket to Paradise’], and it was clearly written for Julia and I,” Clooney said in a joint interview with co-star and fellow executive producer Roberts. “In fact, the characters’ names were originally Georgia and Julian. I hadn’t really done a romantic comedy since ‘One Fine Day’ [in 1996] — I haven’t succeeded like Julia has in that forum — but I read it and thought, ‘Well, if Jules is up for it,...

Picture it: Southern California, 1994.
Cinco Paul is fresh out of USC School of Cinematic Arts, churning out his first post-grad comedy script — an homage to screwball comedies including “What’s Up, Doc?” and “Bringing Up Baby,” called “Band of Gold.”

Nearly 30 years later, Paul, the creator and Emmy-nominated lyricist of Apple TV+’s musical love letter “Schmigadoon!,” has never lost his wistful fondness for the script, which had been bought by Sony and even attached a few directors.

“One Fine Morning” sounds an innocuous title for a grownup relationship drama — destined, perhaps, to be confused on streaming menus with the George Clooney-Michelle Pfeiffer romcom “One Fine Day” — and in a sense, the mellow, melancholic cinema of French writer-director Mia Hansen-Løve is its own kind of comfort viewing. But as with many facets of her filmmaking, there’s a smarter, sadder, more literary undertow to the title’s sunny simplicity. “Un beau matin” in French, it’s lifted from a haunting poem by poetic realist Jacques Prévert, which describes in plain imagery the conflict of facing absence in your life, all while pretending there’s literally nothing there.
Suffice it to say, then, that Hansen-Løve’s latest is not a romantic comedy, except in the interludes when it is. At no cost to its calm, loping pace, “One Fine Morning” is about many things at once, in the way...

Looking back 50 years at anything that isn’t related to geology, evolution or astronomy feels like a glimpse at a long-bygone age. That’s especially so for the 14th annual Grammy Awards, which took place on March 14, 1972 at the Felt Forum in New York’s Madison Square Garden and were broadcast on ABC.
The show was hosted by virtuoso easy-listening singer Andy Williams; presenters included Ed Sullivan, the Fifth Dimension, the Carpenters and “Brady Bunch” star Florence Henderson. Carly Simon won Best New Artist; Kris Kristofferson won Best Country & Western Song for “Help Me Make It Through the Night”; and in a horrifying-in-retrospect accolade, best children’s album went to “Bill Cosby Talks to Kids About Drugs.”
However, in uncharacteristically hip moves, Isaac Hayes’ “Shaft” won Best Original Score for a Motion Picture; Aretha Franklin, Bill Withers and Ike & Tina Turner won R&b categories; Cheech and Chong, nominated for Best Comedy Album,...

Producer Lynda Obst and Miky Lee (executive producer of “Parasite”) have joined forces to tap into the Korean music wave. They will produce “K-Pop: Lost in America,” a feature-length road movie to be released in 2023.
The Cj Enm production has tapped Jk Youn, director of two of the biggest Korean movies of all time, to helm the project. With disaster action movie “Haeundae” in 2009 and melodrama “Ode to My Father” in 2014, Youn was the first person to direct two films that each scored 10 million admissions, the mark of a mega blockbuster, at the Korean box office.
The narrative in “Lost in America” revolves around a K-pop boy group that mistakenly lands in Texas with only two days left until their global debut in the New York. With no money and little time, they must make their way to New York to perform on their dream stage.

“The first musical influence that I had when I was about six or seven was the Go-Go’s,” says Tiffany Anders, the music supervisor for Hulu’s comedy series “PEN15” starring Anna Konkle and Maya Erskine. “I put on shows in the backyard of songs that I loved like ‘We Got the Beat’ and I had a dance routine worked out. I made everyone in the apartment building watch me perform and I made my friends join me.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.

When asked which song best describes the relationship between Anna and Maya, Anders points to a song she chose for an episode in Season 1, “You Gotta Be,” by Des’ree. “I feel like that is the backbone song of their friendship because they’re so there for each other, almost on an intuitive level that’s beyond their age. Though Marvel has decided to consolidate all of its cinematic universe offerings onto Disney+, some outliers still live on for other streaming services. In May 2021, Hulu is set to premiere the latest non-canon Marvel series.
The animated comedy Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. is set to premiere on May 21 and stars Patton Oswalt as the titular Marvel villain. Oswalt’s Modok is every bit the devious floating head that he’s depicted as in the comics. He’s also your every day family man and the show will take on the format of a workplace sitcom. Sounds kinda fun! It’s no wonder that M.O.D.O.K. is the last Hulu Marvel show standing.
In non-Marvel offerings this month, Shrill will debut its third and final season on May 7. This comedy based on Lindy West’s memoir and starring SNL‘s Aidy Bryant has been a consistently bright presence on the streaming scene since...

Wait a minute. Are we somehow half way through the year already? That feels impossible but here comes month number five all the same. With its list of new releases for May 2021, Amazon Prime is highlighting some of its more intriguing original series in awhile.
The first original of note is The Underground Railroad. This series from Barry Jenkins tells the story of one woman’s desperate bid for freedom in the Antebellum South and arrives on May 14. After that comes Solos. This intriguing anthology has one hell of a cast including Anthony Mackie, Dan Stevens, Anne Hathaway, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, Constance Wu, and more. The project will premiere on May 21 and each of its seven episodes promises to be quite different.

Michelle Pfeiffer wasn't fazed by George Clooney's antics while filming One Fine Day. On Wednesday, Feb. 10's all-new E! News' Daily Pop, the 2021 Golden Globes nominee sounded off on Clooney's on-set behavior from their 1996 rom-com. As we previously reported, while participating in the Variety Studio: Actors on Actors interview series, Clooney admitted to being intoxicated one day of filming. However, during a chat with E!'s Carissa Culiner, Pfeiffer made it clear that this incident left her unbothered. "He was just so hungover," she shared. "I mean, maybe that is sort of being drunk but, you know, it didn't bother me." Per Pfeiffer, since Clooney...

AARP The Magazine announced today that George Clooney will receive its annual Movies for Grownups Career Achievement Award.
Clooney – a recipient of two Academy Awards, a BAFTA and three Golden Globes, including the Cecil B. DeMille award – will be honored at the Movies for Grownups (Mfg) Awards, broadcast on Sunday, March 28, 2021, at 8 p.m. by Great Performances on PBS.
“We are delighted to honor George Clooney, whose mastery – and wit – make him one of the most talented and beloved actors of our day, and a director who’d be famous even if we’d never seen him onscreen,” said AARP CEO Jo Ann Jenkins. “The combination of his smarts, hard work and experience shows just how wrong stereotypes about aging are.”
For two decades, AARP’s Movies for Grownups program has championed movies for grownups, by grownups, by advocating for the 50-plus audience, fighting industry ageism and encouraging films that resonate with older viewers.

As with Jessica Lange, who recovered from her big screen debut in the flop remake of “King Kong” to become an awards darling, Michelle Pfeiffer has made us forget her first starring role in the tepid “Grease 2” in 1982. The following year she was paired with Al Pacino in the blockbuster crime drama “Scarface.” In the nearly four decades since, she has co-starred with some of the biggest names in Hollywood in such hits as “The Witches of Eastwick,” “Married to the Mob,” “Tequila Sunrise,” “The Russia House,” “Batman Returns,” “Dangerous Minds,” “Up Close & Personal,” “One Fine Day” and “What Lies Beneath.”
Oscar buzz is building for her critically acclaimed performance in the upcoming Sony Pictures Classics release “French Exit” (due out February 12). That got has us reminiscing about her trio of previous bids. Let’s take a look back at Pfeiffer’s first three Oscar-nominated performances.

Sometimes, even the best in the business can have a little too much fun. Close to 25 years ago, George Clooney and Michelle Pfeiffer teamed up for the romantic comedy, One Fine Day. The flick told the story of two strangers and their young children who unexpectedly intersect on one stressful day in New York City. Sounds lovely, right? But while participating in the Variety Studio: Actors on Actors interview series, George couldn't help but recall one day of filming where he showed up a little tipsy after drinking with close friend Rande Gerber. "I came home at 1 in the morning, and I'm like, 'Oh s--t.' I was pretty hammered," George recalled to Michelle. "I woke up at 5...

In the 1996 romantic comedy “One Fine Day,” Michelle Pfeiffer and George Clooney play single parents who have to join forces to get through an extremely chaotic work day for both of them. Though they start out bickering — and at first work together to co-parent only reluctantly — by the end of the day, they have (of course!) fallen in love.
During their recent conversation for Variety’s Actors on Actors, presented by Amazon Studios, Pfeiffer and Clooney discussed her role in the forthcoming movie, “French Exit,” and his recent film, “The Midnight Sky” — in which he starred, directed and produced.
Pfeiffer and Clooney also reminisced about “One Fine Day.”

In Netflix’s “The Midnight Sky,” George Clooney — also the film’s director and producer — plays dying scientist Augustine Lofthouse. The year is 2049, the setting is the Arctic Circle, and before he dies, Augustine desperately wants to tell a spaceship returning to decimated Earth to go back to the inhabitable moon of Jupiter it had been sent to explore. In the forthcoming Sony Pictures Classics farce “French Exit,” Michelle Pfeiffer plays the arch socialite Frances Price, who also plans to die — after her money runs out, that is (thus the film’s title). Augustine and Frances would have nothing to say to one another, but Clooney and Pfeiffer chatted up a storm — about being working parents, their new movies and,...

George Clooney took part in a wide-ranging interview this week for the Bafta Life In Pictures series, in which he discussed topics including streaming, what makes a movie star and his career decisions.
While discussing a new level of inclusivity aided by the streaming boom, Clooney — who has just made Netflix movie The Midnight Sky — touched on the current challenges facing the cinema sector: “I know there’s this panic about cinemas because they’re not being looked after by our governments, which is a huge industry issue. We subsidize oil companies, we could subsidize the movie theaters for a period of time. I’m not worried about us being back, cinema will always exist, we’re all going to be back together, you still have to go out some time right?”

Heart’s Ann Wilson says a biopic about her band Heart is being produced for Amazon.
The singer of the classic rock band made the announcement to host Lyndsey Parker on SiriusXM’s Volume West show. Wilson said Carrie Brownstein of the punk band Sleater-Kinney and the costar of IFC’s Portlandia, will write and direct.
“I saw the first draft of the script,” Wilson said on the show. “It’s really cool. She’s working with the movie company — Amazon — and with the producer, Linda Obst, who did Sleepless in Seattle.” Obst’s other production credits include Flashdance, One Fine Day, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and the TV series Hot in Cleveland.
The Heart story will cover Ann and sister Nancy Wilson’s rise to one of the biggest bands in the world. No casting decisions have been made, and Ann Wilson said she has no preference.

David Byrne is little without his sense of humor. Of course there’s the musical prowess whose longevity persists from then-outré new wave to today’s classic-rock-radio mainstay, that uncanny ability to spin rhymes out of common phrases as if turning air into gold, astonishing physical showmanship, good looks, scholarship, decades of advocacy, even uncommon strength to cross admirably into other mediums, yet all are undergirded by flair, personality, expertly deployed sardonicism that made him a Scottish-American institution unto itself. David Byrne is, at heart, funny, and if he weren’t funny these many attributes might not hold together—less an icon than the imperceptible weirdo of immense gift.
A cocked eyebrow might be the ideal lens for watching his latest project, American Utopia, or at least key into where he’s leading with that title. A sensation nearly the second it hit Broadway last fall, the show offered 20 faithful...

“David Byrne’s American Utopia” is the third music-oriented film in the last 10 years to serve as the opening-night attraction at the Toronto International Film Festival, after “Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and the Band” last year and U2’s “From the Sky Down” in 2011. But it’s the first that you could say is just a concert movie.
Then again, the word just really has no part in any discussion of the work of Byrne or of director Spike Lee, who turned the former Talking Heads front man’s Broadway show into a film that premiered at the slimmed-down TIFF on Thursday, and will come to HBO in October. In the strictest sense, “American Utopia” is just a filmed performance, but so was “Hamilton” and “Springsteen on Broadway” and “Stop Making Sense,” the 1984 Talking Heads film by Jonathan Demme that is widely considered one of the great concert films,...

David Byrne doesn’t do anything by half, and it’s a testament to his restless creativity that his performance of his song “One Fine Day” on the special New York week of “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on Tuesday featured a performance dramatically different from the one on his stunning ten-week Broadway residency that officially opened on Sunday.
While the “American Utopia” Broadway show features Byrne accompanied by an 11-piece band, this special Kimmel arrangement found him joined by Brazilian percussionist Mauro Refosco and the 70-odd member Brooklyn Youth Chorus for a drum-and-vocal-only version of “One Fine Day,” which is not from the recent album that shares a name with the Broadway show, from his generally overlooked 2008 album with Brian Eno, “Everything That Happens Will Happen Today.” While the version in “American Utopia” is the uplifting cap on the performance, if anything this version was even more inspired, with the choir...

Two weeks ago, as the 57th New York Film Festival kicked off, I griped about the uninspiring quality of the posters for the films in the festival’s main slate. 50 years ago it was a very different story. The posters I have found for the 19 films in the 1969 main selection make up a dazzling collection of illustration and forward thinking graphic design, even, or especially, the type-only poster for the only studio film in the festival: Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice which was the opening night film on September 16 (notably a Tuesday evening).Of course, many of these posters might have been made months or even a year after the festival, since we’re looking back with half a century of hindsight, and many of this year’s designs will no doubt be updated, but this was also the era in which...

Above: 1962 Czech poster for Il posto (1961). Designer: Jaroslav Zelenka. The great Italian director Ermanno Olmi, who passed away last year at the age of 86, made films for over 60 years and yet is best known, if at all, for his four masterpieces: Il posto (1961), I fidanzati (1963), his Palme d’Or winning Tree of the Wooden Clogs (1978) and The Legend of the Holy Drinker (1988), to the exclusion of almost everything else that he made. So the upcoming retrospective at New York’s Film at Lincoln Center, which starts next Friday, is most welcome.
