This movie is based on the true story of Jamie Fuller, a 16-year-old senior in high school who murdered 14-year-old girlfriend, Amy Carnevale on 23 August 1991.

During filming, the shooting title of this film was called "Conspiracy of Silence".
The film shoot was completed in 3 weeks while Fred Savage (19 at the time of shooting) was a sophomore and English major at Stanford. The shoot overlapped the first two weeks of Stanford's winter quarter requiring Savage to juggle studies and assignment extensions with his professors.
