He had early success as an executive producer with two movies written and directed by Wolfgang Petersen: the German-language World War II drama Das Boot (1981), which received six Oscar nominations, and The NeverEnding Story (1984), a big-budget fantasy film that featured a Damon-commissioned score by Giorgio Moroder for non-German audiences.

By intercutting a series of flashbacks into the opening credits, director Lau is able to make his storyline flow smoothly and thus keeping his audiences up to date. Also by morphing the film's freeze frame image into the original comic, he ties in the storyline smoothly. What follows next also works as a prequel detailing Hung Hing society's “Chicken” Chiu's exile in Taiwan and how he becomes a branch triad leader of the local San Luen society.

The film begins immediately in full swing, with a violent brawl in which Chat (Chapman To), the head of the Metal gang, is arrested and locked up in Stanley prison, just as his beautiful wife discovers she is expecting a baby; an event that for wrong timing fails to divert the course of fate. In fact Chat, with a 5-year sentence, is going to miss the birth and early years of his son and has no other options than to leave his trusty lieutenant Luke (Philip Keung) in charge of the boys of the gang, and also to take care of his wife and child.

The mark of a true classic movie is its capacity to transcend time. “A Better Tomorrow” has been in recent years remade in Korea (Watchable) and in China (Surprisingly good!). It has had sequels and entered popular culture albeit not necessarily for the right reasons.
A sudden introduction of Kit (Leslie Cheung) being shot is revealed to be a nightmare before transitioning to a more lighthearted fashion to open the movie. As we see Ho (Ti Lung) and Mark (Chow Yun Fat) initially fooling around before Joseph Koo’s memorable score kicks in as a montage of the money laundering part of their gangland roles is shown, culminating in the first famous image of the movie as Mark burns a freshly produced counterfeit note.
Ho is to go on a visit to Taiwan with underling Shing (Waise Lee) but first goes to see his younger brother Kit graduate as a police officer.
