One of Marvel’s most beloved heroes takes center stage next month and you’re not going to want to miss it… Fans have already gotten a glimpse of Mary Jane Watson in the Free Comic Book Day issue of Marvel’s upcoming series, Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #1, and Marvel has enlisted some of comics’ most acclaimed artists to reimagine the fan-favorite in the shoes of iconic heroes such as Doctor Strange, Hulk, Iron Man, Wolverine and more. Says Marvel Svp Sales & Marketing David Gabriel:
Both the Gwen Stacy Variant Program and this month’s Venomized Variant Program were such runaway successes, we couldn’t help but try to top ourselves. Fact: Nobody knows how to use child actors in action movies better than Shane Black. The Monster Squad writer has been doing it pretty much his whole career, but he's been on a particularly amazing streak these last few years. Guillermo del Toro’s kaleidoscopic imagination is on full display in Trollhunters, a rich gift of an animated series arriving on Netflix later this month. It’s in the depiction of trolls as hulking and metamorphic (yet predictably endearing) creatures, birthed seemingly from the earth itself, shoulders erupting in sprouts of grass or smoothly carved from dark obsidian. It’s in the visualization of said trolls’ subterranean world, a crystalline treasure-trove kingdom that draws upon every vivid shade the animators’ palettes had available (and likely created a few). And yet del Toro’s approach and ideology are most evident not just in those striking optical executions but also in the sense of astonishment and joy with which the series itself regards them.

Chris Evans is is ready to put down the Captain America shield for a spell and star as another iconic genre creation.
According to Deadline, Lionsgate is developing the silver-screen version of BBC One’s “Jekyll” series from 2007, with Evans set to play Tom Jackman — a role originally portrayed by James Nesbit on the TV series.

The project is not to be confused with the upcoming Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde film in development as part of the shared Universal Monsters franchise, which takes a cue from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (of which Evans’ Cap is a central component) in creating a series of overlapping films about its best-known figures: Dracula, the Mummy, Frankenstein’s Monster and yes, Dr. Jekyll, to be played by Russell Crowe.

Director Shane Black wants The Predator (his upcoming addition to the franchise) to be an event film in the vein of Iron Man, but he also wants it to scare the ___ out of audiences. It's a tricky balance to strike. Black -- the director of Iron Man 3 and The Nice Guys among other films -- had a small role in the original Predator and did some uncredited writing on the film. He now returns to helm and co-write the sixth addition to the franchise, and from the sounds of it he's creating a horror/action hybrid. During a recent interview with out own Drew McWeeny, Black talked about wanting to create a sense of fan anticipation months out from the film's release. Adding that he faced a challenge in that much of the mystery surrounding the Predator as a character has been lost, likening the "de-clawing" of the monster...

Team Red took the box office crown this weekend. No, not the metallic team red but the feathery one. Despite an unfashionably late arrival well past the Angry Birds craze that swept phones years ago, the family audience is insatiable these days. Not that the other Team Red, Iron Man and His Amazing Friends had anything to worry about having crossed a billion globally already. Here at home Captain America Civil War leapfrogged both Zootopia and Batman v Superman this past week to become the 2nd most popular film of the year (Deadpool is still #1... for now). Neighbors 2 and Nice Guys weren't as lucky because adults don't go to movies anymore without their children but wait for streaming (sigh). In platform releases, Love & Friendship (which is so damn enjoyable) and The Lobster had successful if minor expansions.

Stop me if you’ve seen this one: Russell Crowe and Kim Basinger walk onto the set of a period L.A. crime drama and, in between tangled plot twists and turns, a lot of people get shot until in the end the true bad guy is revealed. No one could blame you for guessing L.A. Confidential, but the latest collaboration between the now-veteran actors is actually The Nice Guys, the latest film by the writer turned-director, Shane Black (Iron Man 3, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang).
The similarities between Curtis Hanson’s 1997 neo-noir film and this physical, slapstick comedy do not end at its overlapping cast or city setting. Twenty years have passed since Crowe and Basinger collaborated Hanson’s film, while this new collaboration is itself set twenty years later. It’s now Los Angeles in the 1970s (though by the time screen title announces that the title...

If Shane Black’s fast-talking noir thriller The Nice Guys took its sweet time getting off the ground, spare a thought for the director’s reimagining/revival/remix of The Predator.
Having originally starred in John McTiernan’s classic 80s actioner, Black has remained attached to the planned overhaul for the longest time, though it was only when a finished script and a teaser image surfaced earlier this year that we began to see some tangible movement.
Now, with an Arnie cameo reportedly in the cards, the prolific writer-director has touched base regarding the alien beastie itself, including why it could be in for a costume upgrade by the time the reboot rolls around in 2018. Careful to dance around any major plot details, here’s what Black told Coming Soon:
“It’s not to ‘improve,’ it’s make it fun, make it different, make it organically different. So what’s...

Shane Black, the king of the black comedy (no pun intended), is back at it again. The Nice Guys marks the director's first theatrically-released film since 2013's Iron Man, and for those who loved his directorial debut, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, this looks like one to see.
Warner Bros. has just released a spanking new trailer, and they certainly seem to be having fun with it, as it's come in the form of a unique, 1970s-inspired retro trailer, complete with cheesy voice-over and VHS noise. And just like every trailer in the 1970s, you can expect to walk away knowing absolutely nothing about the plot of the film, but still wanting a lot more

With the May release of The Nice Guys gradually approaching, writer/director Shane Black is starting to do the press rounds again, and in a recent interview he talked about his upcoming Predator movie.
Speaking with Thrillist (via Collider), Black discussed how Fox’s willingness to really invest into The Predator as an “event status” film helped convince him to take the helm:
“They [Fox] said, “What if we said to you we want to reinvent this, and really treat it with as much of an event status, or as much hoopla as we would the Alien prequel, which is coming out also? We really want to make this something. The kind of movie that people line up for.” I said, “Really, you’ll spend a bunch of money?” They go, “Yep.” I go, “Make it really scale, spectacle?” “Yep.” “Shit, that sounds interesting.”

The latest trailer for Shane Black's new detective comedy The Nice Guys just came out, and to mark the occasion, Thrillist spoke with Black about the trailer and a few of his upcoming projects, two of which are of particular interest to me (and hopefully to you).
First up is the Predator reboot that he's writing (with Monster Squad co-writer Fred Dekker) and directing. Thrillist Entertainment Editor Matt Patches provides some good context in his question, so I'll include that along with Black's response:
You're going to write and direct a new Predator movie, 30 years after Fox asked you to punch up the script for the original movie and you declined. Then the studio cast you in a role, hoping you'd rewrite the script, and you still refused. How does the guy who kept saying no wind up taking over the franchise? They called me and I was reluctant.

For the longest time, it seemed that Shane Black’s overhaul of the Predator franchise would remain as elusive as its alien antagonist. Persevering through a prolonged pre-production process, there is now finally light at the end of the tunnel for the filmmaker, with a release date pegged for early 2018.
Currently on the verge of releasing noir thriller The Nice Guys into theaters, Black spoke at length about his decision to pick up the reins of The Predator, and why he’s viewing the reboot as an event film in the style of Iron Man 3.
More News From The Web
One thing that threatened to push Black out of the picture was Fox’s desire to craft new installments of Alien vs. Predator, shlock B movies that neither performed well at the box office nor added anything substantial to each franchise’s respective lore. But it looks as though...

Ron Perlman wants Hellboy 3 to happen - but turning it into a reality is proving to be something of an uphill battle.
Perlman - launching his Amazon series Hand of God - told Digital Spy that it would take a leap of faith from someone like Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos to get the comic book movie off the ground.
"I could actually see somebody like Jeff going, 'You guys need $120m to make Hellboy? I'm down.' This is the reason I keep touting Hellboy 3 because I think there's somebody out there that's going to agree with me, that we need to finish this trilogy," he said.
Perlman offered up a cryptic response when quizzed on what was holding a Hellboy sequel back.
"I won't answer that, because it'll make too many people uncomfortable, and I've already made people uncomfortable enough," he said.

As one of the more compelling tendrils of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Agent Carter has spawned a loyal following who are all invested in the covert operations of one Peggy Carter. And so, after a brief cameo in Peyton Reed’s Ant-Man last month, fans are keeping one eye trained on 2016 in anticipation of season 2. We’ve long heard of Marvel’s plans to introduce more villains with the show’s sophomore outing, though during a recent interview with /Film, Executive Producers Tara Butters and Chris Dingess revealed how they are putting their own spin on the villainous Madame Masque.
Though Masque didn’t make her bow in the comics until ’69, Butter and Dingess confirmed that the antagonist will be reworked to mesh with the rest of the story, telling fans to expect a devious movie actress who harbors the darkest alter-ego in all of Tinsel Town.

Warner Bros. Pictures released their new action/sci-fi film, "Jupiter Ascending" into theaters this weekend, and the reviews are in from the major, top movie critics. It turns out that it was only able get a mixed reaction from them with an overall 40 score out of a possible 100 across 38 reviews at the Metacritic.com site. The film stars: Sean Bean, James D'Arcy, Tim Pigott-Smith, Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis, Eddie Redmayne, Douglas Booth, Doona Bae and Tuppence Middleton. We've provided blurbs from a few of the critics, below. Alonso Duralde from TheWrap, gave it a very nice 85 score, saying: "Who cares if the story is occasionally impenetrable or if some gags land with a thud when the thrills and the eye candy keep coming at such a breathless pace? Jupiter Ascending doesn’t break the new ground that the Wachowskis have managed in the past...but the film never slacks in its efforts to wow us.

It's also way ahead of June's Transformers: Age of Extinction ($8.75 million), which is the only movie to open over $100 million this year.If Guardians of the Galaxy follows the same pattern as either of those movies*or of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Godzilla and X-Men: Days of Future Past*it will score the biggest opening weekend of the year.Of course, there's a chance that it's more front-loaded than those movies. Shows began early (7 p.m.), and everyone is out of school (which wasn't the case with the April and May releases). Also,...

While Marvel has been a juggernaut in the comic book industry for several decades now, the last few years have seen their studio arm earn similar success on the big screen, with movies such as Iron Man, Captain America, and The Avengers garnering them a new set of fans while renewing interest. News of a new film from the studio was met with excitement by many, which was heightened with the announcement that filmmaker James Gunn had been signed. Titled Guardians of the Galaxy, Gunn takes on directing duties, as well as co-writing the screenplay with Nicole Perlman. The film stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, and John C. Reilly, and a new clip has now been released. The clip can be seen below.

There’s only a week or so to go until the release of James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, and Marvel Studios have released yet another new clip for their next highly anticipated movie.
This scene seemingly takes place a little while after the events seen in the five-minute extended preivew (which you can see by clicking here), and features a tense – and hilarious – confrontation between Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista) as they form an uneasy alliance.
By now, it’s likely that you’ve already seen more than enough to know that Guardians of the Galaxy is well worth checking out, but this clip is a lot of fun and doesn’t drop any major plot spoilers.
Marvel have also released a brand new poster for the movie which will only be available to those lucky enough to be attending this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

Marvel have released a five-minute preview of James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, and in it we get our best look yet at the movie and how the characters interact than in any of the other recent TV spots and clips.
The clip (which has clearly been edited down a little) offers up a few new plot details and mainly focuses on the Guardians and their imprisonment at an early point in the movie. Interestingly, Dave Bautista’s Drax the Destroyer isn’t with them at this point, so how he joins the team is yet another thing which has yet to be revealed.
Rocket Raccon (Bradley Cooper) and Groot (Vin Diesel) get a lot of the spotlight here, while we also get to see Star-Lord’s (Chris Pratt) reaction to some of his Earthly possessions being messed with. That then leads to the reveal of the moment in...

Marvel have released a second clip for Guardians of the Galaxy, this time offering up a much longer look at a scene we’ve seen snippets of in some of the recent TV spots and trailers for the movie.
This clip allows us to see each of the main characters – Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Groot (Vin Diesel) and Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) – and their unique personalities, while also offering up a great idea of the sort of humour we should expect to see.
Surprisingly, it’s former WWE Superstar Dave Bautista who steals the show with a couple of well-time one liners, though Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has seemingly given the rest of the cast members plenty of great material to work with. The special effects they’ve used for Rocket and Groot are also very impressive.

There’s less than two weeks on the clock before Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy hits, and they’ve been gearing up brilliantly for what is sure to be saturation marketing in the coming days.
We’ve recently been treated to two trios of posters, the most recent of which teased the villains, and now the studio has launched the first clip, in which we see Chris Pratt introducing himself as Peter Quill / Star-Lord.

Some of the supporting cast members like Michael Rooker’s Yondu got the spotlight in a new batch of character posters for Guardians of the Galaxy yesterday (you can see all of those by clicking here), but now it’s the movie’s bad guys who are finally getting some attention!
A comic book movie is nothing without a decent villain, and Marvel and James Gunn’s Guadians of the Galaxy has three of them! They are Ronan the Accuser (The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’s Lee Pace), Korath (Blood Diamond’s Djimon Hounsou) and Nebula (Oculus’ Karen Gillan).
This makes a nice change as the majority of posters and stills for Guardians of the Galaxy have almost all put the spotlight on the main group of heroic characters; Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) and Groot (Vin Diesel).

We’re now 15 days away from the release of Marvel’s latest superhero adventure, Guardians of the Galaxy. With the space epic right around the corner, Disney has been ramping up the marketing campaign, which includes a slew of TV spots and character posters for just about everyone in the film.
We’ve already seen posters for the Guardians themselves, Star-Lord and Drax, Gamora, and dynamic duo Rocket Raccoon and Groot, but now have one-sheets dedicated to secondary players like Nova Prime (played by Glenn Close), Nova Corpsman Rhomann Dey (John C. Reilly) and Star-Lord’s blue-skinned father figure, Yondu (The Walking Dead‘s Michael Rooker).
We’ve also got a great new TV spot, courtesy of Disney Video, focusing on the film’s wackiest character and biggest wildcard: The walking talking tree man, Groot. General audiences may not know that Groot only says three words, “I am Groot,” which...

We’ve seen a lot of posters and stills for Marvel and James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, and almost all of them have put the spotlight on the main group of characters; Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) and Groot (Vin Diesel).
However, Marvel have covered all their bases as three new posters have been released today which give us a much better look at the movie’s impressive supporting cast. We see Glenn Close (The Shield) as Nova Prime Rael, the leader of the intergalactic police force known as the Nova Corps who enlists the help of the Guardians.
Joining her are John C. Reilly’s (Wreck-It Ralph) as Rhomann Dey – flanked by his fellow Corps members – and the sure to be fan favourite Yondu. He’s played by Gunn movie regular and The Walking Dead star Michael Rooker.

It’s a busy time for Guillermo Del Toro. The filmmaker just debuted his new TV series The Strain on FX and is currently finishing up next year’s horror film Crimson Peak. He also recently announced a pair of films: a small black-and-white movie, and the complete opposite of that. Del Toro is so busy that he actually needs to publicly announce when he’s not making a movie.
Which he did, unfortunately, during a Reddit Ama over the weekend. Del Toro has long promised a third Hellboy movie, which would wrap up the saga of Ron Perlman’s curiously lovable demonspawn.

Also below are the first official stills of The Walking Dead’s Michael Rooker as Yondu, the spice pirate who rescues Peter Quill from Earth as a child and serves as a surrogate father of sorts to him. Asked by USA Today to describe the leader of the Ravengers and his relationship with Star-Lord, Rooker said:
“[Peter Quill is] feeling lost, vulnerable, defeated, emotionally drained and hurt, and here is Yondu in this light coming down and brings him up into the spacecraft and takes him away. [Yondu has] some interesting issues — not a good guy, not a bad guy. It’s not so black and white — I should say blue and white.
