Artificial intelligence used to be a longtime science fiction fan's dream, and, to borrow a Mitch Hedberg joke, it still is, too. In fiction, AI occupies a realm of possibility that renews our questions about who and what we are, and dances with theologic philosophies about whether or not we can create synthetic life worthy of a soul. The reality of AI remains a far cry from those visions of Fritz Lang and Isaac Asimov, incapable of independent creation, emotion, or thought.
Generative AI remains a disappointment because it's a fancy PR dodge on the level of the grapeless Grape-Nuts. There's no intelligence in ChatGPT or its "artistic" cousins, and definitely no sentience; it's a Chinese Room experiment with dressed up outputs. But real AI isn't all bad, either. Machine learning is helping doctors hunt down cancer in new ways. Yet, the fiction of AI continues to call to us,...

King Kong ain’t got nothin’ on Denzel! But maybe The Bone Collector does…Denzel Washington has had one hell of a movie career, breaking out in the ‘80s and soon becoming one of the few Black actors to win an Academy Award at the time. But before he would become the first Black actor to win two Oscars, Denzel Washington had to go through some true crap. But that’s not us talking, that’s Denzel himself.
Speaking with The Times, Denzel Washington admitted that he spent a lot of the ‘90s making movies for the paycheck. “After Malcolm X I made some real clunkers. Look them up — I won’t say their names…They are all in the 1990s. But I was earning. I had responsibilities.” Denzel may not want to list any particular titles, but we can imagine the list includes The Pelican Brief, Virtuosity, Fallen, The Bone Collector,...

In the chronicles of American cinema, Denzel Washington (who we recently interviewed) stands as a singular force. His body of work represents not just artistic excellence but a fundamental reshaping of what stardom means in Hollywood. Each performance bears his unmistakable signature – a blend of intellectual rigor and emotional truth that has become the gold standard for screen acting.
Washington’s command of his acting instrument sets him apart from his contemporaries. His approach to character isn’t about transformation so much as revelation – peeling back layers to expose fundamental truths about human nature. Where other actors might rely on external changes, Washington works from the inside out, building characters whose inner lives radiate through every gesture, every measured pause, every calculated glance.

Actor Denzel Washington is one of the highest-paid film stars in Hollywood, resulting in his massive net worth. But as much as he’s worked for his money, Washington questioned if he and other A-listers deserved what they brought in.

After years of proving his worth as a movie star, Washington was able to command the kind of salaries reserved for Hollywood’s top stars. He reportedly found himself making $10-$20 million per film. It was a milestone the Training Day star was proud to achieve since it placed him in the same category as other A-listers.
“Yes, in the sense that I’ve reached a certain level in the profession where my value as an actor is equated with the other top stars in the business,” he once told Games Radar. “For me, the money is secondary to the work,...

Denzel Washington is sharing his thoughts on the current political landscape in the United States.
The two-time Oscar-winning actor, who stars in Ridley Scott’s upcoming Gladiator II, was recently asked about the 2024 presidential election, which saw Donald Trump defeat Kamala Harris earlier this month. During his interview with The Sunday Times, editor Jonathan Dean also noted a specific line in Gladiator II that felt timely given the election: “Empires fall, so do emperors.”
“You know, it’s so easy to stand outside America and say this and that,” Washington, 69, said in response. “Turn around, you know? Pick a country. Any one.”
“But listen,” the Training Day actor continued. “It’s all politics. All promises unkept. And now with the information age the way it is — if anything — left, right, whatever had better learn how to use those tools to manipulate the people. There was a great line in the first movie I did,...

Early on in Denzel Washington's brilliant career, he gave critics a preview of how he was going to play the movie star game going forward -- and they weren't pleased. In between making acclaimed dramas like "Cry Freedom," "Glory," and "Mississippi Masala," Washington cut loose and sought to build up some box office cred in formulaic action movies like "Heart Condition" and "Ricochet." Reviewers who viewed Washington as a major star in the making were disappointed with, if not aghast at, his choices. What a colossal waste of the man's time and talent, they reasoned, to run around in his boxer shorts after John Lithgow in full glazed ham mode. Then he'd go and make "Malcolm X," and everyone would hush up until a frivolity like "Virtuosity" dropped.

Through the decades, Denzel Washington has become one of Hollywood’s most versatile actors. The actor has continually redefined what it means to be a leading man and has been known for his commanding presence, and incredible talent.
However, despite the 69-year-old’s impressive range of characters across genres, the industry has seen him through a narrow lens, casting him in roles that emphasize authority, intensity, or even moral complexity.

This perception, however, was challenged by his performance in the 2001 crime thriller Training Day. In the film, Washington transformed into a seasoned but ruthlessly corrupt detective with unparalleled finesse and proved that he can’t be typecast.

Denzel Washington has had more than a few great films, but his work in his only supernatural thriller has the makings of one of the creepiest experiences to come out of Hollywood. Despite not gaining much critical or commercial traction, the film has become somewhat of a cult classic.

Fallen, the Training Day alum’s 1998 feature, saw the actor play a detective, hunting a copycat killer, who is actually the demon Azazel. There were a slew of things that the film did right, among them the ending, which painted the entire story in a completely different light, especially given the struggles Washington’s character endured throughout the film.

In the 1990s -- back when the internet was new and smartphones didn't yet exist -- there was a healthy amount of skepticism about new technology. "Cyberspace," a term coined by sci-fi author William Gibson, was a terrifying new concept for some, and many Luddites feared it. A stationary network of millions of unknown users? And they're all tapping into the same ineffable, electric realm of information that's Not inside my personal computer? It's like someone peeled back a layer of reality and revealed a whole new dimension. Indeed, Brett Leonard's 1992 sci-fi/horror film "The Lawnmower Man" refers to the 'net in those exact terms. That film also posited that Virtual Reality would come to replace real reality.

Denzel Washington, regarded as one of the best actors of his generation, has a career spanning several decades with work on screen as well as on stage. Initially, he started his career in theater, but soon transitioned to television with the medical drama St. Elsewhere. This project put the actor on the map, and soon every filmmaker in town wanted to work with him.

However, there was one movie that not only tackled major themes but also earned the actor an Oscar nomination. The movie is 1999’s The Hurricane, in which he plays the role of boxer Rubin “Hurricane” Carter.
Washington prepared extensively for the role and even perfected his boxing skills. However, one conversation was enough for him to put the boxing gloves down for good.

There was never a time when Denzel Washington wasn't on a hot streak. Not only does Washington have a talent for picking interesting or unique projects, but he also has the acting acumen to back up whatever he selects. Even when he's decided to make a mainstream genre thriller, clunky crime flick, or brutal, brainless actioner, he is always present, bringing nuance and texture to his performances. It also helps that Washington has become a go-to collaborator for multiple talented directors, having worked with Spike Lee, Antoine Fuqua, Carl Franklin, Jonathan Demme, and both Ridley and Tony Scott multiple times apiece. He has also taken it upon himself to produce 10 movies based on August Wilson's plays, two of which have already been made.

Russell Crowe, Academy Award-winning actor and all-around Generally Very Aussie Guy, has never turned in a bad performance. Some of his best films are benchmarks for who we are in modern pop culture, from his relentless turn as Maximus in Gladiator to his tactical and charming Captain Jack Aubrey in Master and Commander. The rest, well, they’re somebody’s favorite, anyway. And then, there’s his early ride to Hollywood as Sid 6.7 in 1995’s Virtuosity, a brain-dead summer sci-fi flick that even Denzel Washington cannot help but sleepwalk through.

Curtis Hanson's crime drama "L.A. Confidential," based on the novel by James Ellroy, takes place in 1953 right after real-life crime boss Mickey Cohen had been arrested, creating a power vacuum in L.A.'s underworld. A mysterious and brutal massacre at a local diner -- a massacre that took the lives of several allegedly corrupt cops -- reveals a series of equally mysterious plots throughout the city, each of them being individually investigated by one of three cops. There is Edmund Exley (Guy Pearce), the by-the-book Boy Scout no one likes. There is Jack Vincennes (Kevin Spacey), the celebrity cop who offer consultations to the hottest cop show on TV. And there is Bud White (Russell Crowe), a human fist who instinctively beats up criminals who piss him off or who dare to threaten women in his presence.

Welcome to the digital den of dread, where horror meets headsets in a mind-melting mashup! In the realm of horror movies set in virtual reality, the bizarre becomes the baseline, and the uncanny is commonplace. Imagine strapping on a VR headset, only to find yourself in a world where every turn brings a new terror, and every pixel could be your doom. That’s the twisted reality of VR horror films, a genre that blends the eerie with the electronic in ways you’ve got to see to disbelieve.

Update: In celebration of Sam Raimi’s The Quick and the Dead being added to The Criterion Channel as part of this month’s Women of the West series, Sharon Stone is clarifying her involvement in some of the casting. The popular story is that Stone paid the salaries of her then-unknown co-stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe, but on Instagram she’s saying that’s only partially true with her giving credit to producer Mike Medavoy for at least part of the casting.
“Yes, I paid @leonardodicaprio’s salary out of mine. No I didn’t pay @russellcrowe’s, but I did ask for the film to be delayed two weeks so we could get him here from Australia, and our producer @mikemedavoyup agreed to the delay. And to cover those expenses.”
Whatever the case, Stone certainly helped both actors get a foothold, with DiCaprio following The Quick and the Dead...

A new episode of the Black Sheep video series has just been released, and in this one we’re taking a look at a movie you might expect to be really popular, since it’s a sci-fi action thriller that pits Denzel Washington against Russell Crowe. The streamer’s biggest original offering this month is a German series. Hohlbeins’ – The Gryphon, based on the works of Wolfgang Holhlbein, will present a sprawling fantasy tale about three teens discovering a fantastical world called The Black Tower where “the Gryphon, a world-devouring monster, mercilessly subjugates all living creatures.”
The only other original title of note in May is Freevee comedy Primo on the 19th. Movie robots are inherently cool. They're brought to life by the best special effects available, like Phil Tippett's amazing stop-motion, or puppeteers inside detailed suits. From Kenny Baker within Lucasfilm's famous R2-D2 bucket to the pair of stuntmen, Frankie Carpenter and Frankie Darro, who brought Robby the Robot to life, there are a bunch of ways to pull it off.
But most movie robots require bearing a couple of things in mind. One is if the audience is supposed to empathize with them, which means comforting, funny voices — Tars, for example — or human-ish eyes, like Optimus Prime. The other is how close are they to falling into the uncanny valley. We're wired to notice when something doesn't look quite right, and some movie robots benefit from using that to scare the hell out of us. There's another level of robot movie power to discuss, and that's how...

When I was nine years old, my dad told my mom that he was taking me out for ice cream. What he didn’t tell her was that — on our way to Baskin Robbins — we’d be making a pit stop at “Jurassic Park,” a movie that she had forbidden me from seeing on account of the fact that it would obviously scare the living shit out of her ultra-neurotic son. This was in June 1993, about three months after a Terry Brooks fantasy novel had terrified me into thinking that the actual Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse were going to ride across our front lawn at night; in my defense, the suburbs of Connecticut seemed like a perfectly natural place for them to begin their attack.

During 12 seasons on “The Big Bang Theory,” Kaley Cuoco became one of the highest-paid actors in the history of television — but for her 6.4 million followers on Instagram, she gives away content for free. There, on the day of the Golden Globe nominations, she posted a video of herself watching the announcement on her phone. As she hears her name in the actress in a musical or comedy category for “The Flight Attendant,” she turns to her husband, Karl Cook, her face collapsing with happiness, and starts to sob. Along with a second video when she learns that “The Flight Attendant” was also nominated — just Cuoco screaming, really — it was a moment so pure it went viral.

A new year has arrived but Amazon Prime is looking to the past.
That’s not a bad thing mind you, as for its list of new releases in January 2021, Amazon is bringing back some classic movies and TV shows for its host of subscribers. We’ll get to the Amazon originals in a moment but for now, feast your eyes on January’s impressive library additions for the streamer.
Jan. 1 marks the arrival of all eight seasons of Dexter…roughly four and a half of which are great! Dexter will be receiving its own Michael C. Hall-approved revival later this year and thanks to Amazon you can catch up with the first run again. Speaking of show’s with disappointing conclusions, all nine seasons of How I Met Your Mother will come to Amazon on Jan. 19. Some movies of note arriving on Jan. 1 include Dr. Strangelove, The Truman Show,...

A new year means a new start. But in its list of new year releases for January 2021, Hulu is sending a message of…eh, we’ll get the year started in February. Not to be overly rude to the usually sturdy streaming service, but there’s not much going on for Hulu in 2021’s first month.
Perhaps the biggest release of note is something that already enjoyed a successful release for ITV in the U.K. The Sister is the lates thriller from Neil Cross (Luther) and it makes its U.S. debut on Hulu on Jan. 22. 2020 comedies Save Yourselves and Like a Boss both arrive on Jan. 1. Hulu original film The Ultimate Playlist of Noise premieres on Jan. 15 and TV series Everyone is Doing Great arrives on Jan. 13.
Thankfully Hulu’s library titles are a bit livelier this month. Jan. 1 sees the arrival of Blade Runner: The Final Cut,...

Hulu is kicking off the new year in style next month, with January set to deliver a ton of fresh titles to the Disney-owned streaming service. There’s a bunch of original content landing throughout the first few weeks of 2021, but probably the highlight is the incredible number of classic movies that are going up on the site on New Year’s Day. Whether you’re in the mood for iconic comedies, dramas, animated efforts or sci-fi flicks, there’s something for you on the way.
There are well over 100 films being added to Hulu’s library on January 1st, so let’s just pick out a few notable titles. The full Austin Powers trilogy is among them, and if you can’t get enough of Mike Myers, the first Shrek likewise becomes available. For dramas, there’s Robert Downey Jr. biopic Chaplin, Johnny Depp vehicle Donnie Brasco and Jim Carrey’s The Truman Show.

Welcome to this week’s All Elite Wrestling: Dark review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and “I’m Not In Love, But I Called You Up, Just To See If Things Are Goin’ Well”, because you’re getting a Brand New Submarine!!!!!!! Brian Cage defends the Ftw World Title against Brian Pillman Jr., so don’t ask about that Daredevil TV show, because it bored me (fight scenes kicked ass though).

My Opinion: 2.3 out of 5 – This was a weak match that saw Diamante kicks some ass and Allie followed along right behind her. There’s some-thing here with Rache, but she doesn’t have enough immediate talent to be on TV yet. That being said, Rache has a weird, 1996 Booker T stance that she has when she fights that she...

The longer Scream Factory has been in business, the more high profile and “classic” titles they have released, the more they have begun to dig a little deeper for the kinds of catalogue titles and semi-obscurities for which devoted horror fans have been clamoring for years. New licensing deals have made new titles possible, including three new releases that have been among the most highly requested movies in Scream Factory’s history. As if there was any doubt, the fact that these three films now have special edition Blu-rays are proof positive that we are living in a golden age of home video.
First up is Brainscan, a 1994 effort in the tradition of Evilspeak, Trick or Treat, and 976-Evil in which a lonely, depressed kid named Michael (Edward Furlong) unlocks the door into a world of horror when a computer game called Brainscan puts him in the body of a...

We may remember Independence Day, The Matrix, The Phantom Menace. But what about these forgotten 90s sci-fi films? And are any worth seeing?
Think back to the science fiction cinema of the 1990s, and some of the decade's biggest box-office hits will immediately spring to mind: The Phantom Menace, Jurassic Park, Independence Day, Men In Black, Armageddon and Terminator 2 were all in the top 20 most lucrative films of the era.
But what about the sci-fi films of the 1990s that failed to make even close to the same cultural and financial impact of those big hitters? These are the films this list is devoted to - the flops, the straight-to-video releases, the low-budget and critically-derided. We've picked 50 live-action films that fit these criteria, and dug them up to see whether they're still worth watching in the 21st century.

From a range of eras and genres, here's Jenny and Alex's light-hearted pick of 50 great opening title sequences from the movies...
Odd List
We don’t go to the cinema much, because we hate people. We also don’t go because there’s always the risk of accidentally going to see the wrong film. It's not helped by the fact that there's no way of telling until it’s too late, because there are no bloody opening credits on lots of modern films. And by the time you do realise, you’ve eaten all your popcorn and you can’t be bothered to move.
The movies on this list won’t give you that problem. These opening credits are perfect scene setters for the movies that follow, so you won’t have to worry about awkward popcorn wasting moments. It's not a top 50, rather a selection of 50 interesting credits sequences,...

With tech thriller Transcendence out this year, Hollywood seems to be revisiting its 90s fascination with virtual reality, Ryan writes...
Like seasons, hairstyles and fashion, genre popularity in Hollywood runs in cycles. Historical epics have faded in and out of favour since the 1930s, for example, and appear to be on the rise again, with Ridley Scott’s Exodus, Darren Aronofsky’s Noah and two movies based on the Hercules legend all on the horizon. It's not just historical epics making a comeback, either. With Wally Pfister's directorial debut Transcendence, we could be in for a mini revival of the cyber thrillers of the 1990s.
If you don't know anything about Transcendence yet, you can catch up with the first trailer here. Briefly, it's about a scientist (Johnny Depp) who's killed by terrorists shortly after completing some groundbreaking research into machine intelligence. Grief stricken,...

Shovel Ready: Denzel Washington has made only occasional forays into science fiction (Virtuosity, Book of Eli), but he's in early talks to head back to the near future in Shovel Ready. He would play a professional assassin who is contracted to kill the daughter of a mad evangelist before changing his mind and becoming her protector. The project does not yet have a screenwriter hired or director attached. [Deadline] The Outsider: Tom Hardy will star as an American soldier who becomes a yakuza when he joins up with Japanese gangsters after World War II in The Outsider. Prolific Japanese filmmaker Takashi Miike is in negotiations to direct; he has vast experience with violence and yakuza, though his English-language productions have been limited to an episode of the TV series...

Recently more and more films adaptations are being announced for books that have yet to be published. That’s basically the greatest thing that could happen to an author. After all, what better way to get people to buy your book than to have a movie announced starring an A-list actor. Well that is the sales boost Adam Sternbergh is set to see as his sci-fi thriller Shovel Ready has Denzel Washington attached to star.
Details on the film are fairly sparse, and the same goes for the book. The book doesn’t even release for another 6 months, so it’ll likely be quite a while until anything concrete arises. What we do know so far is the story centers around a garbageman turned hitman who, when tasked to kill the daughter of a maniacal evangelist, chooses to protect the young girl instead of killing her. Alanna Ubach has appeared in dozens of TV shows and movies, such as Waiting, House M.D., Hung, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and man more. Alanna Ubach: My character, Jenny, is a horny, married swinger who’s always looking for an excuse to invite Marlon and his girlfriend over for their annual Mandingo parties.
You’ve appeared in a variety of TV shows and feature films. What in particular interested you in taking on a role in this horror-comedy film?
Alanna Ubach: The Marlon Wayans crew has always intrigued me.

Kelly Lynch proved quite thoroughly in an interview with the A.V. Club that if you hang around Hollywood long enough, you'll have plenty of crazy stories. Stories like how kickball enthusiast Bill Murray and his brothers call Lynch's husband, writer Mitch Glazer, every time Road House is on to say, “Kelly’s having sex with Patrick Swayze right now. They’re doing it. He’s throwing her against the rocks.” Bill even called him once from Russia because he's the best. She also told the interviewer that when Denzel Washington realized he was working with an inexperienced director on Virtuosity, he decided to basically take over and rewrite the entire script. Specifically, he took out the love story because, as he explained to Kelly, "White men bring women to movies, and they don’t want to watch a black man with their woman.” And we thought he could play any role.

Last week we took a look at the films of Russell Crowe and asked Film Junk readers to pick a favourite. No easy task, to be sure, but that didn't stop everyone from laying out a pretty clear winner: Ridley Scott's Gladiator. It makes sense considering that it is Crowe's most successful movie to date and also won him his only Oscar, but L.A. Confidential and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World also received quite a few votes. A Beautiful Mind and The Insider rounded out the top 5, meanwhile, down at the bottom of the list, a pair of Ridley Scott's other Russell Crowe flicks were more than a little neglected. Personally, I'm just glad someone out there voted for Virtuosity! Do these results meet your approval? 1. Gladiator -- 32% 2. L.A. Confidential -- 19% 3. Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World -- 15.1% 4. A Beautiful Mind...

This weekend, Denzel Washington (Virtuosity) shows a young punk, played by Chris Pine Ryan Reynolds, that an old dog still knows a lot of tricks in the new thriller Safe House. As a service, we answer every question that you could possibly have about Safe House. Q: How many safe houses are in Safe House? A: Three. Q: Why is a safe house needed in Safe House? A: Denzel Washington plays Tobin Frost, a former CIA agent who has been "off the grid" for the last nine or ten years (depending on which character that you get your exposition from). He turns himself in at the American embassy in Cape Town, South Africa. From there, Tobin Frost is taken to a safe house for interrogating. Q: Why would Tobin Frost turn himself in? A: During the opening scenes, Frost is ambushed by gunmen. His only option is to turn himself...

If they get Liam Neeson in this thing, "2 Guns" -- a thriller about DEA agent and a Naval Intelligence officer investigating each other in ways that sounds reminiscent of "The Departed" -- would likely be the greatest movie ever produced. (Sorry, "Citizen Kane"!) While you wait for baited breath to see if this version of "2 Guns" actually shoots (oof!), why not help Moviefone decide where Wahlberg would fit in on Washington's extensive list of co-stars. Denzel Washington is a fine, fine actor. But his movie titles? They lie to us. They lie to us a lot...
I fully appreciate that it’s not an easy job to come up with a sellable title for a film. In an ideal world, it has to convey the subject of what the movie is about, and also be catchy enough, for good reasons, for us to remember.
However, I sat down to watch the new Denzel Washington/Ryan Reynolds flick Safe House last week, and it immediately became clear – and this is only telling you something that’s in the trailer – that the house in question didn’t appear to be very safe at all. Truthfully, it wouldn't be much of a movie if it was.
I then started considering some of the more recent Denzel Washington movies I’d seen of late, and, well, here’s my scientific research.

The Kansas City Chiefs improbably beat the Green Bay Packers yesterday to ruin Green Bay’s undefeated season and snap their 19-game winning streak dating back to last season (and including the Super Bowl). So how did Romeo Crennell – in his first game as Chiefs head coach and with his team coming in as 11-point underdogs – motivate his team to victory? Easy! He quoted the movie Gladiator: Crennel used The Gladiator [sic] to help get his team ready for this game. He’d seen it last weekend in the hotel, before the Chiefs played the Jets, and he took some Russell Crowe into the Saturday night team meeting with him. “I told the team that, like the gladiator, we were going to play a great team in Green Bay, and no matter what comes out of these gates, we’ve got to stay together,” Crennel said. “We did that. I told them after the game,...

We've told you about the movie adaptation of The Equalizer before. Based on the 1980s television series about a private detective who takes cases the cops can't handle, the project has been in development since 2005 and the most recent development had Russell Crowe starring and Paul Haggis writing the script. But that was over a year ago and now it looks like Crowe's American Gangster and Virtuosity co-star may be taking his place. Coming Soon recently received a press release from Sony Pictures about a deal forged with Escape Artists and the announcement contained some interesting information about The Equalizer project. Listed with other upcoming projects such as a remake of Masters of the Universe, and Sex Tape, a new comedy from Nicholas Stoller and Jason Segel, the entry for The Equalizer says that Denzel Washington is now being looked at to star and that Richard Wenk will be writing...
