Different as they may be in all other respects, Hollywood studios and die-hard “Borderlands” fans have one thing in common: They’re both in it for the loot.
You see, “Borderlands” is what’s called a “looter shooter,” meaning that players blast their way through exotic worlds hoping to pick up goodies that will make their characters more powerful. Unlike movies, you can play and replay the same game infinite times, and it’s never the same experience — which helps to explain why “Borderlands 2,” which came out in 2011, still has many people hooked all these years later.
Psychologically speaking, it’s the same principle — a variable feedback loop — that keeps little old ladies feeding coins into slot machines, young ones swiping right on Tinder and laboratory mice pushing a button that might produce a reward. But that stimulus-response phenomenon, as identified by B.F. Skinner, doesn’t really translate to cinema,...

The episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? covering Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines was Written by Mike Holtz, Narrated by Shawn Knippelberg, Edited by Joseph Wilson, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Following the world-dominating success of Terminator 2 in 1991…we all knew what was coming. As Matthew Lillard’s Stu from Scream would say, “Let’s face it, baby….these days….You Gotta Have A Sequel!”. But stop me if you’ve heard this one before, and a trigger warning alert for Friday the 13th fans…..before anything could be done, a tricky rights situation had to be sorted out. In this particular situation, the Terminator film rights belonged 50% to Carolco Pictures and 50% to James Cameron’s ex-wife Gale Anne Hurd. Rights she accrued in part when Cameron sold her his half of the Terminator estate for merely a...

The capacity for sci-fi to pack imaginative exuberance, political richness, and sheer pulpy excitement into a dazzling cinematic adventure has been yielding masterpieces since the early days of the film medium, and it has allowed directors from Stanley Kubrick to Andrei Tarkovsky to Lizzie Borden to Denis Villeneuve to create some of their finest, most enduring work. At the same time, big-budget sci-fi can be a tough sell -- the greater the worlds and setpieces and ideas being put forth, the higher the risk of financial underperformance.
Unsurprisingly, film history is peppered with sci-fi movies that flopped upon release, only for them to be reappraised and re-emerge as cult favorites years later. That was true of Fritz Lang's "Metropolis," the grandfather of all go-for-broke sci-fi monuments, and it has been true of countless ambitious and unique cinematic visions in the century since. No matter how hard the movies below may have flopped,...

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Bikers and Beatniks and Bisexuals, Oh My!
Last month, the internet — or, at the very least, my queer film-obsessed corner of the internet — broke with the announcement of “Pillion,” a romance film starring Harry Melling as a stick-in-the-mud who becomes the submissive boy toy of a leather-clad biker hottie. The prospect of watching Melling, an underrated actor best known for his childhood role of the bratty Dudley Dursley, under the thumb of Alexander Skarsgård in fetish gear is no doubt enticing. Some cliche somewhere said that ‘a picture is worth a thousand words.’ This has proven to be the case for me and especially when it comes to fan art. I have always sought out great fan art and have wanted to share it with as many people as possible. “Awesome Art We’ve Found Around The Net” is the outlet for that passion. In this column, I will showcase the kick-ass artwork of some great artists, with the hopes that these artists get the attention they deserve. That’s the aim. Based on the novel by Anthony Burgess, Stanley Kubrick's 1971 film "A Clockwork Orange" is set in the not-too-distant future when roving British teenage gangs have mutated into bizarre, ultra-violent, morals-free hedonists who commit crimes to their hearts' content. The protagonist is Alex DeLarge (Malcolm McDowell) a 15-year-old punk who drinks drug-laced milk before taking to the street with his gang of droogs to savagely and gleefully beat and assault anyone who passes into their field of vision. Alex is eventually arrested and put into prison where the government subjects him to bizarre new rehabilitation techniques in an attempt to turn his mind away from violence.
Throughout, Alex is depicted as clearly beyond redemption. He has no compassion and will never have compassion. When he reads about Jesus Christ being crucified, he imagines himself to be the Roman soldier whipping him. The government's brainwashing techniques only instill in him a...

There’ll be some happy holidays on Prime Video in December, as the streamer’s seasonal offerings hope to keep the fires warm in your home this month!
As such, there are quite a few new original holiday movies coming to the service. At the beginning of the month, Eddie Murphy stars in Candy Cane Lane. In this film, the Beverly Hills Cop and Coming to America star plays a determined man who is willing to go above and beyond to win the annual Christmas home decoration contest in his neighborhood – even if it means making a very magical deal.
The DC universe will also be getting festive in December thanks to Merry Little Batman, an animated feature that sees Batman’s son, Damian Wayne, stumble upon a villainous plot on Christmas eve, one that may give him a chance to save the day when his dad isn’t around.

Since Banksy emerged as a street artist in the early 2000s, one of the most intriguing aspects of the Bristol-based painter has been his identity. Over the years, various people have been linked to the moniker, among them Gorillaz co-creator Jamie Hewlett, a comic book illustrator who also co-created Tank Girl, and Massive Attack co-founder Robert Del Naja, based on the fact that both hail from Bristol and Del Naja also dabbled in graffiti.
Now, an unearthed BBC recording from 2003 appears to confirm that Banksy is indeed a Robert, just not Del Naja.

Who is Banksy? It is one of the art world’s, perhaps even pop culture’s, most enduring mysteries since the street artist burst onto the scene in the early 2000s. But we may be one step closer to the artist’s true identity following the recent discovery of a lost BBC interview in which Banksy appears to confirm his name.
The BBC reported on Monday that it had unearthed a 2003 interview between the young, up-and-coming street artist Banksy and the former BBC arts correspondent Nigel Wrench. The original recording was edited for a spot on BBC radio, which was then used as part of the BBC podcast series The Banksy Story that was released in July. But Wrench, having listened to the podcast series, was inspired to revisit the full original recording and discovered a lot more buried information about the artist that was never used.

When it came to its box office performance, Tank Girl was definitely a disappointment. The 1995 sci-fi action film, based on a British comic book, pulled in only $4 million domestically and $2 million overseas, a far cry from matching the film’s $25 million budget. However, the film’s been reassessed as being ahead of its time, and now it’s developed a sizeable cult following, based in part upon the movie’s decidedly feminist themes. Tank Girl starred Lori Petty in the title role, and the shoot was a particularly memorable one for her, even though it definitely wasn’t easy. In fact, at the time of the movie’s release, Petty said it was easily the most difficult thing she’d done.(Click on the media bar below to hear Lori Petty) https://www.hollywoodoutbreak.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Lori_Prtty_Tank_Girl.mp3

Although Wes Craven's 1984 film "A Nightmare on Elm Street" is typically lumped in with slasher movies -- it came out right when the genre was cresting in popularity -- it doesn't quite follow the same structure as its contemporaries in the horror genre. The "Nightmare" movies, because they take place largely within dreams, are slightly more cerebral, bizarre, or imaginative than many of the stalk-n-stab movies that infested theaters at the time. The series also attracted interesting and notable directors who went on to other projects. Chuck Russell directed part 3. Renny Harlin director part 4. Stephen Hopkins directed part 5. And Rachel Talalay directed "The Final Nightmare."

It's a little odd to get excited about the "Hunger Games" films coming back, right? Not because the previous films in the franchise were bad (on the contrary), but because they're the opposite of escapist entertainment. The initial four films based on Suzanne Collins' best-selling young adult novels are pretty unflinching in the way they depict a future where a fascist government forces working-class young people to fight one another to the death for the amusement of the wealthiest and most powerful members of society. Those films are just as frank in the way they confront the psychological impact on the Games' survivors and how easily revolutionaries can be manipulated by politicians or even become fascists themselves.
This also makes the "Hunger Games" films uncomfortably on time for a revival with this year's adaptation of Collins' prequel book, "The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes." Set long before the other entries in the series,...

As with many superheroes, Blue Beetle has a long and varied publishing history. The original version of the character first appeared in the pages of Fox Comics' "Mystery Men Comics" #1 way back in August of 1939, around the same time Superman and Batman were just gaining traction. That version of Blue Beetle gained superpowers by consuming special vitamin tablets. A second version of Blue Beetle was folded into DC Comics during its notorious Crisis on Infinite Earths event — Blue Beetle 2.0 was more like Iron Man, using technology and a super-powered suit to fight crime.
The most recent version of Blue Beetle -- the version that inspired the character in Angel Manuel Soto's upcoming feature film -- is a teenager named Jaime Reyes who chances into the possession of a mystical scarab that attaches to his body and grants him a "living" costume that adapts to protect him. Later this week Gorillaz, the cartoon pop band created by Blur stalwart Damon Albarn and “Tank Girl” cartoonist Jamie Hewlett, will release their eighth studio album, “Cracker Island.” The album is already receiving rave reviews (Rolling Stones called it the band’s “most purely pleasurable LP yet”) but, sadly, another Gorillaz project is no more.
Albarn, talking to Belgian publication Humo (via Stereogum), said the Gorillaz movie that was being worked on with Netflix is no longer happening: “The new record came about because Jamie and I were often in Los Angeles. We were working on a Gorillaz feature film, which will never happen.”
When the publication asked if the movie was “permanently suspended,” Albarn confirmed that, yes, it was dead. “That is to say, and without naming names because the whole matter has not yet been settled: the streaming platform for which we were making the film has withdrawn.

Science fiction frequently takes contemporary fears and turns them into something much larger. Just look at Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein," considered by many to be the first science fiction novel, which took people's fears of autopsies and medical research at the time and created a fictional scientist who turned a corpse into a monster. Over a century later, writer Eric Bernt ("Surviving the Game") and director Brett Leonard ("Lawnmower Man") would create their own story of contemporary fears and their own Frankenstein's monster, too, played by Russell Crowe. The biggest difference is that while Frankenstein's monster was once human, Crowe's character Sid 6.7 is a computer program given a body composed of nanobots. He is as inhuman as they come.
"Virtuosity" was released in 1995, possibly the single greatest year for weird cyberpunk sci-fi movies. In a year populated by films like "Judge Dredd," "Johnny Mnemonic," and "Tank Girl," "Virtuosity" just couldn't compete.

There's something about science fiction from the 1990s that just hits different — even if it's part of a classic franchise. While films like "Tank Girl" and "Judge Dredd" were trying to predict the near-ish future, "Star Trek" always had much more expansive ideas in mind. The 1991 film "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" was the final "Star Trek" film featuring the entire original series cast, and it was a timely allegory about the end of the Cold War, trading Russians for Klingons. The version of the future we see in "Star Trek" is so far in our future that it's hard to guess as to how accurate it will be, but there's something both timeless and timely in "The Undiscovered Country," as Captain Kirk (William Shatner) learns to reconcile his aging body, growing irrelevance, and personal prejudices.

"Unbreakable," like most of M. Night Shyamalan's films, reveals itself slowly. The film is downbeat, depressive, and is presented as a mystery. David Dunn (Bruce Willis) is the only survivor or a massively destructive train accident, and he doesn't have a scratch on his body. Although he evaded death, David is too despondent over his flagging marriage to much notice how extraordinary it is. Once a football hero in high school, David now works as a mere security guard, resigned to a dull life.
Samuel L. Jackson plays Elijah Price, a dealer of rare comic book art who is afflicted with an in-born medical condition that leaves his bones incredibly brittle and prone to breakage. Following the train accident, Price appears to Dunn to present him with a wild theory. If there are people in the world who break easily, then there must be, for the sake of cosmic balance,...

Zack Snyder remains one of fandom's most divisive directors, best known for his hyper-stylized takes on comic-book worlds. To his haters, he's a grimdark objectivist who just likes to make things look cool with no real understanding of his subjects. To his fans, he's the one guy who gets them, representing their favorite heroes the way they want to see them while indulging in the same power fantasies that draw outsider kids to comics in the first place. He can be surprisingly progressive, casting Polynesian Jason Momoa as Aquaman and nonbinary Ezra Miller as the Flash. He can also seem weirdly retrograde: ask any Persian how they feel about "300."
For most of his career, Snyder has adapted other people's works, a phase he appears ready to step out of as he attempts to create new franchises for Netflix. Whether they come from his mind or his memories of enjoying source material,...

The only other actor who has spent more time in a makeup chair than Doug Jones might possibly be his "Hellboy" co-star Ron Perlman. A look back at both actors' respective filmographies fids a litany of creatures and nonhuman characters that often require a lot of fur, tendrils, and other creative prosthetics. It's a credit to both men that they have been able to provide expressive and empathetic performances through enormous silicone headpieces and masks that often block out their hearing and vision.
Jones in particular so often plays creatures that it's a rare treat to see him without makeup. Jones currently plays the gentle Kelpien Capt. Saru in "Star Trek: Discovery," and has previous played a clown in "Batman Returns," kangaroo people in both "Tank Girl" and "Warriors of Virtue," a yeti in "Monkeybone," the Silver Surfer in "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer," and several notable creature...

When it was released in 1995, people didn’t quite know what to make of the film Tank Girl. It was based on a series of comic strips in a British magazine that was largely unknown to American audiences. And even though star Lori Petty had a string of hit movies in the early ’90s, including Point Break, A League of Their Own, and Free Willy, her presence in the film — along with co-stars Naomi Watts, Ice-t, and Malcolm McDowell — wasn’t enough to drive much interest in the movie, and it only made 6 million at the box office. Of course, as we’ve seen time and time again, yesterday’s edgy “ahead of their time” action movies often become today’s cult classics, and Tank Girl has found a new set of fans as an example of modern feminism on film. But what did Petty think about the movie? She...

‘If you want the girl next door, go next door’: Lori Petty on Station Eleven and surviving Hollywood
The star of 90s classics Point Break and Tank Girl on her maverick career, delving into her troubled upbringing, and her latest role in the era-defining TV drama
Lori Petty lives with her cat in a gloriously cluttered apartment in Venice Beach, a neighbourhood in southern California that she moved to three decades ago while filming the surfer movie Point Break. A row of high arched windows let in plenty of light, and just about every other spare inch of the 58-year-old’s wall space is given over to portraits, photographs, hung up hats and books. Somehow, Petty has found a patch of bare whiteness that’s big enough for her to sit in front of for our Zoom call. This took a bit of stagecraft, she admits. “Ya ready?” Petty whips away the white background to reveal the reflective glare of an LCD screen. “It’s my TV! I put a quilt over it!

Live-action adaptations of comic book movies aren't exactly a new thing. "Judge Dredd," "Ghost World," "Tank Girl," "Tales From The Crypt," "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," and "Josie and the Pussycats" all predated the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Extended Universe. And of course, there were the various Marvel and DC heroes that adorned the silver screen before these shared movie universes existed as well. But since the rise of the MCU and the Dceu, studios have craved the marketing potential of franchise films connected by a shared mythology, and attempted to replicate the success for themselves. That's why we've seen a ton of non-Big Two...

Drink, depression, homelessness and football injuries: the road to the director’s first feature, Sweetheart, has been difficult. She even dumped one project when her feelings about her gender identity changed
Marley Morrison has written and directed a knockout first feature – the witty, spiky queer romance Sweetheart – but when she rocks up to the back terrace of a London cafe, her appearance doesn’t exactly scream “film-maker”. The impish 35-year-old looks more like the coolest cartoon character you ever saw: the love child of Popeye and Tank Girl. Bleached hair peeks out from beneath her pink Barbour cap; shorts and T-shirt leave her intricately cross-hatched tattoos on display. “My partner’s a tattoo artist,” she explains as she sits down, “so I’m a sketch book.” On one arm is Marlene Dietrich; on the other, Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet are snuggled up together in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

For years, costume designers have been fighting for pay equity — an issue thrown into sharp relief by the difference in remuneration between the largely female Costume Designers Guild and the predominantly male members of the Art Directors Guild.
But an equally growing concern bubbling away under the surface has been a lack of costume designers’ involvement in the off-screen monetization of their designs. As Variety recently reported, when Disney collaborated with fashion brand Rag & Bone on an officially licensed “Cruella” collection to tie in with the new live-action film, “Cruella” costume designer Jenny Beavan didn’t see a dime. In fact, she didn’t even know a collaboration was in the works until she spotted the news on social media.
Now, costume designers want change. The objective is to be seen as an asset not only to the aesthetic of the film but, more holistically, in marketing, promotion and box office success.
