Daniel Craig is best known for his role as Agent 007 in the James Bond films. Starting with 2006’s Casino Royale, the actor played the role for fifteen years, ending his tenure with 2021’s No Time To Die. The actor was reportedly happy to exit the role and has since starred in Knives Out and will be seen in the upcoming Queer.
However, one film reportedly trumped his horror at playing Bond repeatedly. The actor spoke about the early scenes that director David Fincher showed from their collaboration The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Craig mentioned that he was horrified at the visuals and could not believe the free rein he got from the studio.

Grounded in reality and showing us a side of The Dark Knight we’ve never seen before in live-action, Matt Reeves’ The Batman came out swinging (literally), redefining what comic book movies could look like. Blending art noir with a touch of David Fincher’s Se7en and Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver, it goes without saying that this isn’t your granddaddy’s Batman; it’s […]

Why does Morgan Freeman, our beloved cinematic sage, sport those iconic gold hoop earrings? While some might think it’s merely a quirky fashion choice, there’s a fascinating, slightly morbid reason behind them that leaves us both admiring & chuckling in the same breath.
Morgan Freeman in Hard Rain | Credit: Paramount Pictures
As the man who’s delivered breathtaking performances in Glory, Se7en, Unforgiven, and The Dark Knight trilogy, Freeman has clearly ascended to the pinnacle of A-list stardom. But back to the gold hoops—these aren’t just bling for the bling’s sake. Freeman revealed in a 2019 Instagram post that these gleaming accessories are worth just enough for someone “to buy me a coffin if I die in a strange place”.
Just like the brave sailors and roguish pirates of yesteryear, Freeman’s got his bases covered, ensuring he can rest in peace wherever his life adventures might lead him.

Gwyneth Paltrow is back.
The Oscar winner and Goop mastermind is joining Timothée Chalamet in Josh Safdie’s ping pong movie “Marty Supreme.” The project marks Paltrow’s first on-screen movie role since 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.”
No information was given about Paltrow’s role.
Plot details for “Marty Supreme” are kept under wraps, but studio A24 posted an image of a table tennis ball with the words “coming soon” after Variety broke news of the project in July.
Paltrow, one of the most acclaimed and commercially successful actors since the 1990s, has been largely absent from the big screen since acting opposite Robert Downey Jr. in the “Iron Man” and “Avengers” movies. Best known for her Academy Award-winning role in “Shakespeare in Love,” as well as “Sliding Doors,” “Emma,” “Se7en,” “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” “Proof” and “The Royal Tenenbaums,” Paltrow has lately devoted much of her time to the lifestyle brand Goop,...

David Fincher has firmly established himself as a master of blending art and commerce. It’s especially impressive considering his output has been uniformly dark, moody and disturbing, with flashes of wit and satire thrown in. Let’s take a look back at all 12 of his films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1962, Fincher cut his teeth at special effects house Industrial Light and Magic, working on such films as “Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi” (1983) and “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” (1984). He left to pursue a career in directing, making his mark with a commercial for the American Cancer Society that depicted a fetus smoking a cigarette. He co-founded Propaganda Films, a production house for music videos and commercials that employed future filmmakers Spike Jonze, Michael Bay, Antoine Fuqua, Alex Proyas, Mark Romanek, Zach Snyder and Gore Verbinski. Fincher himself helmed several famous music videos, including “Vogue,...

This month marks the 15th anniversary of Batman: Arkham Asylum: the universally acclaimed video game developed by Rocksteady Studios that started an entire gaming franchise. Loosely inspired by Grant Morrison and Dave McKean’s best-selling graphic novel Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth, the 2009 game has DC Comics’ iconic superhero take on the Joker and a whole host of escaped inmates when they take over Gotham City’s asylum for the criminally insane. Over the course of a single, long night, Batman moves to stop the supervillains and their private army from wiping out the personnel trapped on the island as he moves to stop the Joker’s most dastardly plot yet.
While Arkham Asylum’s various follow-ups, including 2011’s Batman: Arkham City and 2015’s Batman: Arkham Knight, have earned well-deserved acclaim for continuing the story and expanding the world of the original game, Arkham Asylum is vastly...

David Fincher is known for his impeccable attention to detail and technical precision. Hence, when actress Rooney Mara was being considered for the role of Lisbeth Salander in the film The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Fincher reportedly gave her a ‘laundry list’ of things she should prepare for.
Mara was unrecognizable as the anti-social hacker Lisbeth who crossed paths with Daniel Craig’s Mikael Blomkvist. The actress reportedly beat many potential candidates such as Scarlett Johansson, Emma Watson, Sarah Snook, and Elliot Page among others.

“What’s in the box?” The very fact that you just heard Brad Pitt‘s unique delivery in your head demonstrates how iconic that line has become. The question and reveal brought David Fincher‘s unrelentingly bleak crime thriller, Seven, to a head (sorry) and confirmed a hopelessly despairing worldview.
The box, of course, contained the severed head of Tracy (Gwyneth Paltrow), the sweet wife to Pitt’s detective David. The disembodying is the final move by the serial killer John Doe (Kevin Spacey), who based his crimes on Catholicism’s Seven Deadly Sins. Doe killed Tracy out of Envy, driving David to kill him out of anger. Together Wrath and Envy are punished.
Although that upsetting climax was indeed in the script by Andrew Kevin Walker, Pitt recently revealed that some at the studio New Line Cinema wanted something else entirely in that box.

The Children, Eleanor!
We’ve spent the month of July discussing the badass babes of Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror (listen), the queer undertones of Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut (listen), and the “very bad weather” of Jan de Bont‘s 1996 tornado film, Twister (listen).
Now we’re wrapping up our de Bont double bill with his less successful 1999 special effects remake, The Haunting!
In the film, sheltered Eleanor (Lili Taylor) is recruited for a dubious insomnia study at the infamous Hill House by questionable doctor David Marrow (Liam Neeson). Along with bisexual Theo (Catherine Zeta-Taylor) and horny Luke (Owen Wilson), Nell is terrorized by annoying ghost children and the monstrous owner of the house, Hugh Crain (Charles Gunning).
As the spectral hauntings become more and more severe, Nell must uncover her tenuous connection to the previous victims before the terrible CGI swallows her and the other participants whole.

Osgood Perkins’ Longlegs (2024) is the modern-day crime thriller we’ve been craving. Packed with wicked twists, unnerving visuals, and zany performances, Longlegs delivers a sinister murder mystery that hooks you from the first twisted encounter with the man himself to the final blood-curdling frame. A mesmerizing blend of mystery and horror, this sadistic chiller is the answer we’ve long awaited to Zodiac (2007), Se7en (1995), and Silence of the Lambs (1991).
“Longlegs keeps audiences on high alert with well-paced plot beats and an unraveling mystery that defies rational explanation.”
In Longlegs, we follow Lee Harper (Maika Monroe), an FBI agent with an intuitive knack for finding killers. These psychic abilities land her on the cold case of Longlegs, a sinister figure behind a series of brutal murder-suicides targeting families. The 2024 horror-thriller Longlegs has been making waves because of its stacked cast and apparent chilling nature. Believe me when I say I was desperate to like this movie, and yet, somehow, I returned home massively disappointed. The film, which plays out like an atmospheric mystery, the likes of, dare I say, “The Silence Of The Lambs” or “Se7en,” certainly has a sense of eerieness to it, but I found myself realizing that it isn’t as deep as it seems. Longlegs is certainly brimming with symbolism, but is it as effective as it needs to be to have us screaming for help, or is it simply an overburdened film that leaves nothing to the imagination and falters to the end? You can decide based on my understanding of Longlegs‘ ending.

Spoilers for "Longlegs" follow.
Making a horror film in 2024 about the nature of capital-e Evil is a lofty, impressive endeavor, especially given how many past classics of the genre set the bar so high. Horror movies are never in short supply, and the majority of them are (in one way or another) chasing the same classic high benchmarks, which means that a filmmaker has to find their own unique voice in attempting to play in the same sandbox as, say, "The Exorcist," "The Silence of the Lambs," "Se7en," and others.
Writer/director Osgood Perkins has been steadily developing just the right kind of unique voice within the genre ever since his debut film, "The Blackcoat's Daughter," and now his latest feature, "Longlegs," is his first masterpiece to date, combining a slew of his most effective tropes as an auteur with the perfect choice of material and collaborators. Each of his...

Plot: A newly minted FBI Agent (Maika Monroe) winds up becoming embroiled in the pursuit of a serial killer named Longlegs, with ties to the occult.
Review: Seeing Longlegs at a 10 am press screening was pretty wild. When you’re a film critic, you get used to seeing these kinds of ultra-dark, nihilistic horror movies at a deceptively sunny time of the day. Heck, I’ll never forget watching Ari Aster’s Hereditary at the ungodly hour of 830 am at the Sundance Film Festival one day, and, after being badly shaken by the terror onscreen, walking out the door to a sunny festival full of young folks in ski jackets happily going about their business.

Writer-director Osgood Perkins is aiming straight at his celebrated father’s status at the top of the most memorable and creepy character in the history of movies. The filmmaker’s dad was the great Anthony Perkins who of course played the unforgettable and nightmarish Norman Bates in Hitchcock’s chilling 1960 classic, Psycho. He also followed it up in the ’80s with Psycho II and Psycho III, the latter he also directed in addition to playing Bates yet again. I can’t think of another movie outside of Frankenstein that has stayed in the public’s consciousness quite this long, certainly in this horror genre.
Osgood Perkins (The Blackcoat’s Daughter) seems to be unleashing his own inner demons with his choice of subject matter, and he even has suggested that the dark story behind his parents’ marriage is partly responsible. Anthony Perkins was a closeted gay man, though married to Berry Berensen,...

Fresh off IndieWire’s list of the 100 greatest Westerns, Sergio Leone’s classic Spaghetti Western “A Fistful of Dollars” is getting a remake.
The original 1964 feature, which starred Clint Eastwood as a nameless gunfighter, began a film trilogy that included “For a Few Dollars More” and “The Good the Bad and the Ugly.” Now, “A Fistful of Dollars” is going to be reimagined by the producers behind “The Departed,” “300,” and “The Talented Mr. Ripley.”
Euro Gang Entertainment, founded by Gianni Nunnari and Simon Horsman, will produce the “A Fistful of Dollars” remake, along with Italian producer Enzo Sisti of Fpc and Rome-based Jolly Film, which produced the original movie. The film is expected to be an English-language remake, but no details have been made public yet.
Euro Gang and Sisti recently collaborated on Roland Emmerich’s upcoming Peacock gladiator series “Those About to Die” starring Anthony Hopkins.

June proved to be a wild month: we talked about the wacky space antics of Leprechaun 4: In Space (listen), the underseen-but-very-good trans vampire film Bit (listen), and Robert Rodriguez’s first half of the Grindhouse double-bill, Planet Terror (listen).
To kick off July, we’re racing over to Japan to discuss the 35th anniversary of Shinya Tsukamoto‘s Japanese cyberpunk masterpiece, Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989).
In the extreme cinema film, an unnamed salary man (Tomorowo Taguchi) is slowly transformed into metal after a hit and run involving a metal fetishist (Tsukamoto). After accidentally (?) killing first his cat, and then his girlfriend (Kei Fujiwara) – with his new metal drill dick no less – the salary man and the fetishist engage in a destructive battle of wills that only ends when they fuse together. Together at least, the lovers set out to destroy the world.

When I suggest to Oz Perkins and Maika Monroe that they’ve attained special notoriety in the horror genre, they jokingly brush off the praise with a spontaneous yet synchronized gesture of wiping their hands as if it’s no big deal. The unscripted moment speaks to the duo’s impressive synchronicity, which is evident in Longlegs and remains intact during its promotion cycle. Their partnership feels fated as much as planned.
But the film marks more than just the inevitable union of an emerging horror auteur and a leading scream queen. Longlegs makes knowing use of both Perkins and Monroe’s elevated profiles to chart a unique path through what might seem at first blush like a familiar film about the hunting of a serial killer. Perkins and Monroe lean into the trust they have built with their audience to confidently navigate the many misdirects and mysteries of Longlegs.

Given how cinema is engulfed in the so-called Easter egg culture, it’s tempting to over-read the presence of glam-rock signifiers in Oz Perkins’s Longlegs. T. Rex’s “Bang a Gong (Get It On)” serves as both its epigraph and closing credits accompaniment. And an album cover of Lou Reed’s Transformer appears prominently above the eponymous menace’s mirror. But glam rock offers less of a skeleton key to the film than a guide on how to watch it.
The flamboyant early-1970s subgenre of rock music, which sought to upend rock’s hegemonic hypermasculinity with androgyny and gender fluidity, was a promise of liberation to its fans. How something begins its life isn’t how it must always present itself. So also goes Longlegs, a sturdily constructed horror film with a foundation sneakily built on shifting sands.

Denzel Washington’s legendary career began with his feature film role in Carbon Copy in 1981. However, his breakout role came in six seasons of the medical drama series, St. Elsewhere. He got some interesting roles following his series role. He once revealed that he rejected a comedy film, which could’ve altered the course of his career.

DiCaprio was the absolute heartthrob with films like Romeo + Juliet and Titanic while Pitt impressed audiences with his performances in Se7en, 12 Monkeys, Legends of the Fall, and Fight Club.

Back in 1991, the world saw The Silence of the Lambs that followed an FBI trainee who seeks advice from an imprisoned cannibalistic maniac in an attempt to catch another serial killer. The glowing success of this thriller brought us a number of its pale copies.
These include a 1997 controversial movie that seemingly had it all to become a new hit, but eventually failed to do it. However, nowadays it is getting more viewership, as it has just entered Netflix’s global top all of a sudden, taking the sixth place in it.
The plot of this psychological thriller revolves around Alex, a forensic psychologist whose niece goes missing one day. After consulting with his fellow detectives, he realizes that she could have fallen victim to an insane killer known as Casanova.

If there was a decade that truly helped to shape the future of the crime thriller genre, it was undoubtedly the 1990s. The era churned out numerous movies that have become the benchmark for how to craft a movie about the hunt for a serial killer, or flashing femme fatales with a penchant for murder. Movies such as The Silence of the Lambs, Misery, Se7en and Basic Instinct set a benchmark for not only quality in the crime flick, but also by delivering iconic sequences that are synonymous within the genre. Lambs had Anthony Hopkins’ wonderful Chianti sipping performance, Misery gleefully smashed ankles, Se7en had the tragic head in a box scene, while Basic Instinct allowed Sharon Stone to show more than just her acting ability. The point is, by the time the movie we’re focusing on in this episode was released in 1999, audiences had preconceived expectations, thanks...

There's no greater fear than the unknown. Our heritage as beings evolved from organisms whose survival instinct was developed thousands of years ago means that we're all afraid of the literal and/or metaphorical dark, if for no better reason than we inherently know that danger can lie in wait within those unseen spaces. With knowledge comes logic, reason, and enlightenment, but there are still many questions about existence without answers, chief among them what else may exist beyond our corporeal forms. The conception of a God or Gods is a comforting one, but as logic follows, the existence of both good and evil in the world could mean that there is no God without a Devil.
It's that ambiguous, unresolved fear we all have about the nature of evil and its potential tangibility that writer/director Osgood Perkins has demonstrated an uncanny knack for tapping into. From his debut,...

Gwyneth Paltrow is an incredible actress who broke into the mainstream thanks to her roles in movies like Se7en and Emma. An incredibly talented actress, it is a fact that not many know; Steven Spielberg is her Godfather. A good friend of her father, film producer-director Bruce Paltrow, the actress has thus been often hailed a nepo-baby by several fans.

Having been found not guilty after standing trial for sex offenses, actor Kevin Spacey is working on a comeback, signing on to star in multiple movies, doing convention appearances, and sitting down for interviews – including one for the Lex Fridman podcast. During his conversation with Fridman, Spacey was asked what it was like to work on director David Fincher’s 1995 film Seven – or Se7en, if you prefer – in which he played the serial killer known only as John Doe. Spacey’s answer gives an interesting look into the making of a film that many consider to be a classic.
Spacey confirmed to Fridman that he did not originally get the part of John Doe. Someone else was cast in the role… then, soon after filming began, Spacey got a call telling him that Fincher had fired the actor who had been cast and wanted Spacey to report to set. So he did.
