If you’re going to exploit the crowd for a quick buck, you should at least have the decency to do it the old fashioned way, by getting seriously bloody and seriously sexy. Erotically charged horror movies not only provide a visceral thrill, they’re likely to linger longer in the memory than a picture about flying sharks.
The pinnacle of this subgenre is represented by the likes of Jean Rollin’s La Morte Vivante, a weird, atmospheric film about a young woman who returns from the dead with an insatiable lust for blood. Despite having been dead for 2 years, she reanimates as a beautiful naked blonde who wanders around France in search of victims. The film struck a chord with Rob Zombie, who had a hit with a song that borrowed the film’s English language title, The Living Dead girl.

As a teen just getting into the world of low-budget horror movies, and straight to VHS fare, there were a handful of directors whose work I would buy and/or rent without fail and without any prior knowledge (besides the spiel on the back of the box) of what i was getting into. One of those directors was Fred Olen Ray, the genius behind such films as Scalps, Star Slammer, Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers, Evil Toons, Cyclone and the awesome Scream Queen Hot Tub Party. However in the intervening years it’s safe to say I haven’t had the urge to watch as many of his flicks as I did in the 80s/90s heyday...

When I was a kid my dad used to have tapes upon tapes of movies he had taped off TV, typically uncut and usually filled with all the “goodies” Case in point, Screwballs. Screwballs was recorded in LP format and came just after Caddyshack. While I’m not entirely sure how I was allowed to watch the uncut, non-television purified version of Caddyshack at as twelve, well I thank my lucky stars that dear old mum never figured it out. At the time I didn’t know that Roger Corman was in anyway associated with the picture. Figures. Giant, low budget monster movies and loosely based Edgar Allen Poe adaptations certainly give way to comedic representations of large ta ta’s pirouetting across the screen like sugar plum fairies on LSD. So for the boobs. For the sense of humor grown by repeated viewings of said film. For the VHS...

Kelli Maroney was the mid 80's scream queen, but she brought something completely unqiue to her take on the final girl. Now the final girl could be tough, smart, resourceful, but she still had a feminine side. Kelli was one scream queen ahead of her time and set the standard for others to follow in her footsteps.

-How did you get involved in the acting community?
I always wanted to be an actress from the time I was a little girl watching old movies with my mom on TV. I got in as an extra/apprentice at the Guthrie Theatre in Mpls where I grew up. From there I went to the National Shakespeare Co. Conservatory in NYC and while there I accidentally got a part in the Daytime TV...

As a sidebar before we jump into today’s topic, I want to keep my promise that this blog won’t just be about politics, or even gay horror. Sometimes it will just be about hot guys. Case in point: Todd Farmer, screenwriter of Jason X (with my favorite in the series after the original) and My Bloody Valentine 3D (with Zane Smith), which I saw on opening weekend and absolutely loved.
I (briefly) interviewed Farmer for a project called “Expanded Books” (formerly “Book Look”) when my friend Peter Bracke’s Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History Of Friday The 13th had its release party. At the time I thought, “Uh…he cute.”
Cut To: My Bloody Valentine 3D. I go see the flick with a gaggle of homos and what are we treated to? Naked Todd Farmer! Ok, more like naked Todd Farmer’s ass, but still! As much...
