With Janus possessing the much-needed restorations, Catherine Breillat is getting her biggest-ever spotlight in November’s Criterion Channel series spanning 1976’s A Real Young Girl to 2004’s Anatomy of Hell––just one of numerous retrospectives arriving next month. They’re also spotlighting Ida Lupino, directorial efforts of John Turturro (who also gets an “Adventures In Moviegoing”), the Coen brothers, and Jacques Audiard.
In a slightly more macroscopic view, Columbia Noir and a new edition of “Queersighting” ring in Noirvember. Gregg Araki’s Teen Apocalypse trilogy and Miller’s Crossing get Criterion Editions, while restorations of David Bowie-starrer The Linguini Incident, Med Hondo’s West Indies, and Dennis Hopper’s Out of the Blue make streaming debuts; and Kevin Jerome Everson’s Tonsler Park arrives just in time for another grim election day.

Gary Allan will release his first album in eight years with Ruthless, a collection of 13 songs due June 25th. It’s the follow-up to 2013’s Set You Free and follows a string of one-off singles he has released beginning in 2015.
The album news arrives with the record’s lead-off track, “Temptation.” Written by Nicolle Galyon, Chase McGill, and Jon Nite, it’s a pulsing mid-tempo song with emphatic drum hits and atmospheric string sounds. “I’m over getting drunk on you, but I’m always gonna miss that taste,” Allan sings.

Country music focuses heavily on storytelling. Sometimes the stories are about budding romance, and other times they're about heartbreak. If you need a good cry, it's always comforting to curl up in the fetal position and blast tearjerkers like Chris Stapleton's "Tennessee Whiskey" or Lee Brice's "I Drive Your Truck." Of course, you don't have to only listen to the classics. There's a ton of new country music out there perfect for your mulling sessions. Below, we've rounded up some of the saddest tunes in both popular and alternative country, whether you need to work through heartbreak, nostalgia, or grief.

There hasn’t been a proper OutKast release since 2000's Stankonia. Speakerboxxx/The Love Below was a pair of solo albums connected at the hip, and Idlewild was odds and sods and a great Lil Wayne verse—not exactly the return of the player and the poet. Director Allan Ungar might have found his next big actioner in Decoy, a project with some compelling star power in Frank Grillo (The Purge: Anarchy), Andy Garcia (The Untouchables) and Tyler Posey (Teen Wolf). Written by David Benullo, the story centers on an identity thief who becomes hunted by the Nsa after he steals the identity of a wanted man. The script was featured on the 2014 Hit List which tracks well-liked, unproduced work. Ungar's last film was the raucous 80s throwback Gridlocked, which channeled the fun of buddy cop films like Lethal Weapon and The Hard Way. That film starred Dominic Purcell, Stephen Lang and Danny Glover and is available on Netflix. The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop on the film and the fact...

KFC and Vr...who would've thought it would be such a great combination? Apparently they did as the company is currently planning on using this new Vr experience to train future employees of their chain. Check out the trailer for The Hard Way: A Virtual Reality Training Experience and continue on below:
So allegedly, KFC isn't making this game for the public (yet) but rather using it to train future employees on the proper method to making their fried chicken. Here's an official quote from KFC regarding the game:

It's not just a fun experience - we're actually using the innovative technology to supplement our robust restaurant employee training program for cooks, called Chicken Mastery Certification, by bringing it to our regional general manager trainings, quarterly franchise meetings, and corporate onboarding at our headquarters. If the Budweiser Super Bowl ad “Born The Hard Way” reminded you of the work of Paul Thomas Anderson, that’s not a coincidence. The 60-second commercial that tells the story of Anheuser-Busch co-founder Adolphus Busch’s emigration from Germany to St. Louis, Missouri was inspired by Anderson’s “The Master” and “There Will Be Blood,” according to director of photography Jody Lee Lipes.

Gridlocked
Written by Rob Robol & Allan Ungar
Directed by Allan Ungar
Canada, 2015
In Gridlocked, Dominic Purcell plays David Hendrix, a Strategic Response Team (a type of swat team) leader who after taking a bullet in the line of duty is on forced leave from his squad. Hendrix spends his days single-handedly kicking down doors and laying the smack down on petty thugs while pining to rejoin his former unit. Enter Brody Walker (Cody Hackman), a Justin Bieber-esque movie star with a downward spiraling career and a penchant for indiscretions that leaves him facing jail time. Walker’s PR/Legal team cut a deal placing him in a community service program as Hendrix’s tag-a-long, and surprise, surprise, the two don’t get along. Just when Gridlocked looks to be ripping pages right out of the 48 Hrs. and Ride Along movie making handbooks, it provides one more swerve. Hendrix takes Brody to his former headquarters,...

It's amazing to me that it took Canada twenty years to produce Gridlocked, the kind of fun, buddy cop action movie that ran its course by the mid 90's in most territories (and yes, I'm aware of Bon Cop, Bad Cop). Perhaps even more amazing is how this kind of movie - once a mainstream staple - is now considered "indie"! But, here we are, discussing the new action film by director Allan Ungar, which wears its love of 80's and 90's actioners like Lethal Weapon and The Hard Way on its sleeve and ends up being an enjoyable action movie if not particularly unique.
In what I can only assume is a narrative nod to The Hard Way starring James Woods and Michael J. Fox, the film is about a tough-as-nuts cop who's forced to take an arrogant actor under his wing i [Continued ...]...

In his autobiography, Easy Street: The Hard Way, Ron Perlman tells a story about the unshakable faith that Guillermo Del Toro had in casting him in the main role of the red right hand of doom. The story goes as follows: Del Toro was set up to make Hellboy at Universal, but over time Universal kept throwing big name actors his way to persuade him into making the movie as soon as possible. At one point, the studio was apparently very excited about using Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson or Nicolas Cage in the title role, but Del Toro allegedly said he'd only cast Ron Perlman. While promoting today's release of The Strain on Blu-ray and DVD, I asked Guillermo Del Toro to confirm if both Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Nicolas Cage, the two big names Ron Perlman dropped in the aforementioned memoir, were actually pushed on him by the...

The Hard Way
Written by Daniel Pyne and Lem Dobbs
Directed by John Badham
USA, 1991
Thanks to the popularity of Lethan Weapon, the action comedy genre thrived in the 1980s and 1990s. The genre combines fast paced thrills and violence with witty one-liners and often ridiculous comedic scenarios. For some reason, the 80s were a veritable breeding ground for many of these types of films and the trend continued well into the 90s. For instance, 1991 saw the release of a movie that pretty much turned the genre on its head. That film is the buddy cop adventure The Hard Way and it is not only a smart action thrill ride with buckets of fresh humor but also a smart commentary on real life police work and method acting.
Directed by John Badham (WarGames, Saturday Night Fever, Short Circuit), The Hard Way pretty much has it all. It focuses on two...

Interview Simon Brew 27 Feb 2014 - 05:44
In the first of a two part look back at his career, James Woods chats to us about family, Scorsese, Stone, Leone and more...
It took a false start or two before we finally got James Woods on the end of the phone. There was no agent connecting us, no middle person to monitor what we were saying. Just a problem with a charging cable, oddly enough.
When we were connected, we launched into an interview that was intended to last 15 minutes, but as it turned out, it passed the hour mark. And heck, we got through a lot: so much, that we've split this interview into two articles. A genuinely fascinating man.
Regular readers will know that we've been long-time fans of James Woods - as highlighted by our look at some of his least appreciated films, here - and as our conversation started,...

Pat Benatar burst on the scene in late 1979, and for most of the 80′s she ruled the charts and concerts stages. During the decade, she won four consecutive Grammy Awards for Best Female Rock Vocal, had two Multi-Platinum albums, five Platinum albums, three Gold albums and 14 Top 40 singles. She was a also a huge presence in the early days of MTV, and was a fashion icon for her spandex and “Benatar Hair.”
Strangely, she rarely gets a mention when it comes to the “gay icon” label, even though she’s played countless Pride events, numerous AIDS Walks, and has always maintained that her gay audience is her favorite audience. And let’s face it, her music is all about being yourself and not taking shit from anyone, which is a message many of us of a certain age took to heart when we were young.

Bette Davis. No doubt the name instantly brings to mind Kim Carnes’ earworm ‘Bette Davis Eyes’, which has been covered by artists ranging from Gwyneth Paltrow to Brandon Flowers and Taylor Swift. Ah yes, those spellbinding, haunting heavy-cast eyes. They bewitched countless men and are part of our cultural zeitgeist. Bette Davis was so much more than the sum of her parts though. Her tenacity, independence, unique idiosyncrasies, and artistic instincts had and have no equal, even today. She has been labeled a diva and an outright bitch, but she is unquestionably a trailblazer and an icon in every sense.

Bette Davis is almost as fascinating of a character off the screen as she is on it. She’s truly nothing short of a dynamic and brilliant actress, much further ahead of her time than she could ever be aware of. Tiff will be covering pockets of classic cinema starring Davis from November 15th- December 8th. The following are a few choice recommendations for anyone brave enough to venture back into these vintage art pieces.
Dark Victory

Directed by Edmund Goulding
USA, 1939
A young talented and beautiful girl is cursed by much more than her radiant personality and grace as she works to get the most out of her life. The question is: does this more describe Bette Davis or her character here, Judith? This peek into classic cinema delivers on a lot of fronts, especially giving us the kind of quick, clever dialogue classic films are known for.

At Tiff Bell Lightbox, this fall season of Hollywood classics is dedicated to the only actress to vie with Barbara Stanwyck as the greatest to emerge from the studio system: Bette Davis.
Curated by Tiff Cinematheque Senior Programmer James Quandt and running from November 15 - December 8, this delectable tribute features 15 films that trace Davis' four-decade evolution from glamour girl to grande dame to Gothic gargoyle.
Featuring a new digital restoration of the cult classic "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?" (1962), as well as a host of other Davis favourites including the film that shot her to stardom, "Of Human Bondage" (1934), "Dangerous" (1935), which garnered Davis her first Best Actress Oscar win for her turn as a self-destructive, tempestuous Broadway actress, and the endlessly quotable "All About Eve" (1950), an Academy darling, that received a total of six Oscars that year.

(1962), as well as a host of other Davis favourites including the film that shot her to stardom, "Of Human Bondage" (1934), "Dangerous" (1935), which garnered Davis her first Best Actress Oscar win for her turn as a self-destructive, tempestuous Broadway actress, and the endlessly quotable "All About Eve" (1950), an Academy darling, that received a total of six Oscars that year.
Also included in the retrospective are Davis' trilogy of films from her frequent collaborator and favourite director,...

As his first sitcom since Spin City screens in the Us, the Back to the Future star says being diagnosed with Parkinson's at the age of 30 saved him from alcoholism and possibly divorce
When Michael J Fox walks into the reception of his office in New York, he arrives like a bantam-weight boxer ready for a fight. It is not so much the way he moves, although that is partly why he gives that impression, his weight shifting restlessly from foot to foot. "I feel like I'm dangling from a coat hanger, with my toes scraping and kicking at the ground," he writes in his excellent autobiography, Lucky Man, describing the effects of Parkinson's disease, which for more than two decades now has racked his body.
What really gives him the appearance of a readying boxer is the look in his eyes. Whenever Fox meets someone for the first time,...

The year 1991 is the focus for our latest underappreciated films list, which includes dramas, thrillers, and a smattering of horror...
Ah, 1991. The year Robert Patrick ran after cars in Terminator 2: Judgement Day, and Kevin Costner grew a spectacular mullet for Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves. But outside the top ten blockbuster list, there lies an entire world of other, less celebrated films to discover.
Some of the movies on this list have been included because they were overlooked in theatres, while others have been added because they were unfairly dismissed by critics. One or two others were modest successes, but (whisper it) we decided to include them anyway because we really, really like them.
So here, for your delectation, is our pick of 25 underappreciated films from 1991.
25. Deceived
You think Goldie Hawn, you tend to think comedy, or her Oscar-nominated turn in Private Benjamin.

Japanese RPGs seem like a niche genre nowadays, with a well-supported but smaller set of games appearing primarily on Sony platforms (yes, you find the odd one popping up on Xbox 360 and slightly more appearing on Wii) to reasonable acclaim. They have their fan base and I am proud to say that I am one of them. I have sunk a fair portion of my gaming life into these immersive, sprawling games and it’s fair to say that I hardly ever say a bad word about them.
But this isn’t Philadelphia, and it isn’t always sunny in Jrpg land. As with every genre there are certain pitfalls, and there are recurring annoyances that happen in every game, regardless of development team or publisher. These glitches and values aren’t necessarily bad, but they’re often steps that a gamer used to the Western market has to learn...

Review Michael Noble 14 Aug 2013 - 17:00
Ray Donovan finally kicks into gear with its impressive fifth episode, which is by far the best we've seen from the show yet...
This review contains spoilers.
1.5 The Golem
Golem n [From Hebr. Galmi]
1. A supernatural shapeless form or entity fashioned from clay, often malevolent in nature.
2. A recently released Irish-American convict with a taste for troublemaking and black Cadillacs.
Ezra’s hallucinatory impression of Mickey Donovan came from out of nowhere, both in-universe and out. It felt odd seeing CGI in what is ordinarily a straight-up realist(ish) drama but two things excused it. Number one, that it was the very real result of Ezra’s tumour. Number two, it appeared in the best episode thus far of Ray Donovan and was driven by the very welcome acceleration of momentum.
Before we take a look at the unfortunate Ezra, let’s see what else went right with Golem.

A superb character actor James Woods has turned in some remarkable performances. Here are a few of his underappreciated roles...
If you're looking for an actor who's far more interested in being a character than a hero, then surely James Woods is your man. He's built up a body of work over several decades that has rightly brought him a degree of acclaim - Videodrome, the brilliant Cop, Ghosts Of Mississippi, Contact, Salvador, and his growing collection of excellent TV roles - but in the 80s and 90s, he popped up in lots of films that are rarely talked about now.
There are so many seemingly lost great James Woods roles, that it seemed long overdue we try and right that particular wrong. So here's a collection of perhaps the lower profile, yet brilliant, performances from his career. And this is just a few of them.

With uncertainty surrounding the Jack Reacher's movie future, James looks at which of Lee Child's books might work as a sequel...
Last month saw the long awaited on screen debut for Lee Child’s literary creation Jack Reacher, a film which had been raising eyebrows across the globe since its announcement.
First off, there was the choice of which of Lee Child’s 14 Jack Reacher adventures then published would be used for the character’s debut film - but we’ll get to that later. By far, the news that caused the greatest fuss was the casting of the man who would fill his not so small shoes.
Casting Jack Reacher was always going to be a nightmare. The character’s physical appearance, which had been repeatedly played up in Child’s pages was simply impossible to replicate. It could be argued then that...

Lee Child has hinted that a sequel to Jack Reacher will be set in a rural landscape. The British author, whose book One Shot forms the basis of the new Tom Cruise thriller, told Digital Spy that The Hard Way or Worth Dying For could be the next Reacher novels adapted for the screen.
"Having seen Jack Reacher in an urban situation, shot in Pittsburgh, gritty. I think we should do a rural one. One of the empty landscape (more)...

If you have spent any time at all playing Assassin’s Creed III you are well aware that the game has a ton of bugs and glitches, despite the release of a day one patch. Ubisoft has been working on the issues since the game’s launch last month and has announced that a new patch will be ready “by the end of next week”.
This new patch will squash a ton of mutliplayer bugs (like the highly annoying Fort Wolcott glitch that can trap players in the warmup screen) and a whole host of singleplayer glitches found throughout pretty much every campaign mission and multiple side quests. The fixes for Assassin’s Creed III‘s singleplayer campaign include everything from the mundane (missing audio lines) to game-breaking (getting stuck in the opera house at the start of the game).

As far as I can tell, regular folk don’t care for movies about movies or films about filmmaking. They used to, back when Hollywood was a more glamourous and idolized place for Americans. Classics like Sunset Boulevard, Singin’ in the Rain, The Bad and the Beautiful and the 1954 version of A Star is Born were among the top-grossing releases of their time. But 60 years later, it seems the only people really interested in stories of Hollywood, actors, directors, screenwriters, et al. are people involved with the film industry — the self-indulgence being one step below all the awards nonsense — and movie geeks, including film critics and fans. If you’re reading Film School Rejects, you’re not one of the aforementioned “regular folk,” and you probably get more of a kick out of stuff like Living in Oblivion, Ed Wood, Get Shorty, State and Main, The Hard Way, The Last Tycoon, The Stunt Man...

Jason Momoa certainly looks the part as the hulking Conan The Barbarian, but does the film itself do the character justice? Duncan finds out...
There’s no two ways about it, the new Conan The Barbarian isn’t going to be for everyone.
But for those of us who grew up in the eighties, on a diet of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Conan and the slew of bloodthirsty sword and sorcery movies that followed in the wake of its box office success, then this new take on the character will prove to be a somewhat nostalgic treat.
Just as last year saw the re-emergence of such throwback, mega violent spectacles as The Expendables and Ninja Assassin, Conan The Barbarian follows suit, swinging its sword proudly above its head, while keeping its tongue firmly in its cheek. I appreciate I might not be in the majority on this one, but I really,...

A mad bastard is the person who drags the net in the deep end, where the crocodiles are… brave to the point of being mad. You could say that a mad bastard is also someone who decides to make a film starting with the actors instead of the script. That would be Brendan Fletcher, with his first feature, Mad Bastards.
The seeds of Mad Bastards can be traced back to 1996, when Fletcher first met musicians Alan and Stephen Pigram, as well as the rest of the family music band The Pigram Brothers. In return for a fishing trip in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, he directed a couple of videos for them.
Over the years they developed a strong personal and professional bond, creating documentaries and even a 10-minute drama called Kulli Foot, which aired on the ABC. That project also put them in touch with David Jowsey, an...

It's natural, I suppose, for the rank-and-file of the world to both exalt celebrity and root for a celebritastrophe -- why should they get millions of dollars and fame bleeding from their assholes for six weeks' worth of work while we toil away at our computers, banging away at spreadsheets and Power Point presentations?
The Charlie Sheen debacle is the perfect example: We're getting off on this man's downward spiral of crazy, and some of us even see it as karmic retribution for getting paid $2 million an episode to inflict "Two and a Half Men" on the world. What's little discussed, however, is Sheen's obvious mental deterioration, his addiction problems, his psychosis and delusions. He's six months from dead, and most of us are celebrating it. We're just too overjoyed by the spectacle of it to...

It's October 20, which can only mean one thing: It's time to celebrate the birthday of one Calvin Broadus, known best to the rest of the world as Snoop Dogg. The veteran rapper/actor/entrepreneur turns 39 years old today, and it's staggering to think about everything that Dogg has done over the course of his career. It's an incredible body of work that includes some truly killer records (including modern classics like "Gin and Juice," "Murder Was the Case," "Drop It Like It's Hot," "Sexual Seduction" and the recent "I Wanna Rock"), memorable film roles (notably appearances in "Training Day," "Bones," "The Wash" and "Starsky and Hutch") and countless business successes (there are Snoop Dogg-branded skateboards, video games, porn films, action figures, hot dogs and pet products). He also provides a voice for Tom Tom Gps products, which is amazing.
But Snoop's side projects are often overlooked, which is a shame,...

It’s a WWII-fest, with five films starring the legendary Errol Flynn. These adventures from 1942-1945 are a solid showcase of not only the star, but era itself, and the DVD set adds to the effect with some great bonuses. With vintage newsreels, classic cartoons, and more, you can relive the experience of these films like never before.
From a unique period in film history, putting out war adventures with a unique derring-do perspective, and starring the unique screen charm of Flynn, this is a collection with a surprisingly varied appeal. Mostly directed by another legend, Raoul Walsh (White Heat, The Tall Men), the set also manages to deliver an effort of style, with Walsh generally aiming at some manner of art in his semi-pseudo-propaganda vehicles.
Taking a look at the Nazi menace from every angle imaginable, whether as an American pilot, Canadian mountie, or Norwegian villager, Flynn gets a...
