- TriviaThis film was originally titled "The Mrs." and early promotional material (including an early version of the final poster) contained this title. It became "Deceived" because the producers wanted to further separate Goldie Hawn's association with bubbly comedy and they felt "The Mrs." didn't make the theme clear enough.
- GoofsWhen Adrienne is painting (right before her husband's accident), the brush she is using is dry.
- Quotes
Adrienne Saunders: I- I really do apologize, I wouldn't bother you normally, but I just have to have that necklace tonight.
Carol Gingold: No! She said I could have this!
Mrs. Gingold: I know, honey, but the necklace isn't a toy, and...
Carol Gingold: Daddy!
[runs from the room]
Carol Gingold: She said I could have it, and now she wants it back!
Mr. Gingold: This is very confusing for Carol, Mrs. Saunders.
Adrienne Saunders: I'm sure it is Mr. Gingold, but this happens to be a very valuable piece of jewelry.
Mr. Gingold: I know how you feel, Carol. It's very confusing when grown-ups do things that aren't fair.
[gives Adrienne a dirty look]
Mr. Gingold: But you have to accept that these things happen in life...
Adrienne Saunders: [grabs the necklace] Oh, for Christ's sake! Isn't anybody in charge around here?
Even though this movie is not generally considered as such, I felt "Deceived" was one of Goldie Hawn's better performances. The film starts out with Adrienne (Hawn) being stood up on a blind date, and while in the restaurant, she mistakes Jack Saunders (John Heard) for her missing date. Some time later, he chances upon her at her place of employment and soon the love blossoms. Cut to some years later, and they are married with a little girl of their own now, head over heels in love with each other and happy and satisfied in their life together.
However, when a co-worker of Jack's is murdered and found in the museum where he is employed, doubts begin to surface and suspicions begin to build. With the investigation in full swing, Jack is involved in a fatal car accident and Adrienne is left with nothing but unanswered questions. The deeper she digs, the more she finds out that Jack is not who she thought he was.
I really enjoyed this movie. The tension was taught, the story intelligent and well conceived, the camera work excellent, and the pacing right on the money. And like I mentioned before, Goldie Hawn was up to the task providing a convincing performance and carried the film well. This has grown into a personal favorite of mine over the years, I have seen it many times and would certainly recommend it for the thriller/suspense film enthusiast.
