Approximately eight to ten hours of optical work - rephotographing, visual treatments and filtering - were required to produce one minute of film. The total post-production period for the 72-minute movie was eight months.
Stephen Charles Barry and Adolfo Vargas are the only actors who had another role outside of this movie. Barry appeared in Merhige's short film Bin Of Celestial Birds and Vargas in an episode of American Playhouse.
The cast members - after the first three - of Theatreofmaterial (sic) were credited twice in the end credits, first under the name of the collective, and then individually.
A majority of the movie was filmed in a decrepit construction site on the cusp of New York and New Jersey. Construction workers would even occasionally help with the production of the film.
The film was originally intended to be a theatrical stage production with interpretive dancing and a live orchestra. This idea was scrapped when E. Elias Mehrige realized the production would cost about $200,000.
