The BBC has landed on what it hopes will be its next big adaptation, a TV series version of Caleb Azumah Nelson’s buzzy debut Open Water, while drama boss Lindsay Salt has outlined ambitions for a new crime show that “tests the boundaries.”
Open Water follows Marcus and Effie. From the moment they meet, they feel an immediate, undeniable connection. But, as Marcus soon learns, Effie is in a relationship with Marcus’ friend Samuel. It’s a boundary that Marcus is unwilling to cross, but a shared project, photographing and documenting Black creatives in London, draws them into each other’s orbit.
Banijay-backed Mam Tor, which is also producing Richard Gadd’s next project, is making the series alongside Newen Studios-backed B-Side Productions, with Nelson serving as the drama’s lead writer, director and executive producer. This list was originally published in April 2024. It has since been updated with new films from Guadagnino.
A curious thing happened when the first trailer for “Challengers” came out: People started getting really, really weird online about the suggestion that the three main characters — played by Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O’Connor — have a threesome. It prompted memes and hand-wringing alike, as if this was the first time any actor in film history had ever pretended to engage in sex onscreen — never mind that the film ultimately doesn’t have an actual sex scene at all, instead withholding from the audience in order to build up the lingering sexual tension that eats away at all sides of its love triangle. The fervor around the possibility of sex in “Challengers” affirmed something that has been obvious for years now: Cinema, especially American cinema, is starved for films that sizzle with genuine sensuality.

Challengers director Luca Guadagnino could be making comic book film Sgt Rock with Daniel Craig next.
Director Luca Guadagnino’s next project has been a matter of speculation for a while now, considering barely a month goes by wthout a new project being added to the filmmaker’s busy slate. This year hosts two films from the revered director: the already-released Challengers and Queer, the latter starring Daniel Craig and set for its UK debut next month. Then there’s After The Hunt, his starry drama which features Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield. That one’s currently in post-production.
Beyond that, there has been speculation over what Guadagnino will make next. While his planned remake of American Psycho has been bubbling along, there’s his take on Pier Vittorio Tondelli’s Italian novel Separate Rooms and his take on William Golding’s book, Lord Of The Flies.

Daniel Craig stars in Luca Guadagnino’s adaptation of William S Burrough’s famous novel Queer, which now has a new trailer.
Next month will see A24 release Queer, Luca Guadagnino’s adaptation of the William S Burroughs autobiographical novel about love, desire and self-loathing. Daniel Craig stars as as William Lee, the film’s protagonist, joined by Lesley Manville, Jason Schwartzman, Henry Zaga, Andra Ursuta, Michael Borremans and David Lowery.
Guadagnino’s Challengers made plenty of waves when it released in cinemas earlier this year, and the filmmaker has wisely chosen again work with that film’s composers, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who return to score Queer.
Here’s the synopsis for the new film:
‘Craig plays Lee – a self-conscious, insecure man living it up in 1950s Mexico City surviving on GI Bill benefits and part-time jobs among expat American college students. He becomes infatuated with Eugene Allerton...

Writer-director Ethan Berger’s The Line wastes no time confirming all of our worst assumptions about Greek life. The opening credits play alongside photographs of American fraternities over the centuries, the fashions changing but the smirking white faces staying just the same. The very first interaction between Tom (Alex Wolff) and the rest of his modern-day fraternity brothers reveals them to be exactly the sort of big-mouthed, small-minded jackoffs that pop culture usually presents them as.
When Tom is with his fellow frat members, he’s all braggadocio and sexual innuendo. He even adopts an accent that his mother (Cheri Oteri) describes as a “faux Forrest Gump” in order to sound more like them. But while the other brothers are the scions of rich and powerful families—the fraternity loves to boast about how many future presidents and Fortune 500 CEOs the Kna has housed—Tom is a scholarship kid who...

Stephen King has a wide taste in literature, loving novels like "Lord of the Flies" and "Watership Down" over horror literature and weird fiction, but that's not to say he doesn't pay attention to other masters of the genre. The bulk of King's novels are horror stories, and he clearly took a lot of inspiration from the pulp horror, genre magazines, and EC Comics of his childhood. Indeed, King wrote "Creepshow" in 1982, openly paying homage to the "Tales from the Crypt" and "Shock SuspenStories" issues he read as a youth in the 1950s. King wears his horror influences on his sleeve.
As for the literature that inspired him, King recalls reading a lot as a child, and that he loved a wide variety of books. He enjoyed the fantastical stories of Ray Bradbury, the Nancy Drew mysteries of Carolyn Keene, and, yes, even horror novels like Robert Bloch's "Psycho.

Excluding various holy texts like the Bible, the Qur'an, the Bhagavad Gita, the Book of Mormon, and Mao Zedong's Little Red Book, the best-selling book of all time is Charles Dickens' "A Tale of Two Cities," which has sold over 200 million copies since its publication in 1859. This is according to a 2012 article in Reuters, although getting actual figures on such things is difficult to track down. Other big sellers throughout history include Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's "The Little Prince," which, according to Britannica, has sold between 150 million and 200 million copies, Cao Xuequin's 1790 family epic "Dream of the Red Chamber," which sold about 100 million copies, and J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy fable "The Hobbit," which matched those figures. The most recent super-seller, topping 120 million copies, was 1997's "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone," which was written by an increasingly controversial author.

Fans of Jeopardy! have been tuning into see if contestant Ryan Manton would qualify for the Tournament of Champions. However, his winning streak ended up being cut short thanks to another player. On social media, fans have been reacting with both surprise and praise for the episode’s outcome.
Manton Need One More Win To Qualify For The Tournament of Champions
Fans had previously been won over by Manton for a lot of surprisingly romantic moments on the show. Notably, Manton revealed that his wife Lauren had previously appeared on the game show. In fact, he revealed he proposed to her before the show’s taping.
During Manton’s first two episodes, his respective Final Jeopardy! responses were “What is I Love You, Lauren” and “What is I still love you Lauren.” Both times, despite not having the correct response, his wager was low enough so that he still one each night’s game.

From Yellowjackets to Fallout and now murderous new drama Sweetpea, the British actor is killing it. But behind all the grisly roles, she’s really sweet ... honest
All Ella Purnell ever wanted to do was write children’s books about magical trees and talking ducks and happy bunny rabbits, and instead here she is chainsawing a man’s head off in a radioactive wasteland. Or freezing to death in the wilderness and being eaten by her closest friends. Or being so traumatised by school bullies that she takes up serial killing, slaughtering victims with her dead dad’s treasured pocketknife.
It might not be exactly what Purnell had in mind for her 20s, but spending the past few years committing, and being subject to, acts of stomach-churning violence has certainly had its upsides: the Londoner is now on the brink of TV superstardom. Purnell has been on a steep trajectory...

Yellowjackets's unique story of survival has some wondering if the series is based on a true story.
Showtime's hit thriller follows the teenage survivors of a plane crash in the 1990s that left a girls' soccer team stranded in the Canadian wilderness.
In parallel to this Lord of the Flies-esque story, the series also documents the adult lives of those who lived through the show's horrific events while stuck and forced to do what it takes to survive.

The stakes have skyrocketed on Slow Horses Season 4 Episode 4, and with only two episodes left, the big question on my mind is: who will make it out alive?
Harkness and his Terminator-like hitman are deadly, and it feels like no one is safe.

Whatever secrets are hidden at Les Arbres will tear Slough House and the Park apart — with or without Whelan and Flyte’s interference.
Taverner won’t be able to keep Whelan in check for long, and Flyte is a wildcard, hungry to prove herself. As for River? Well, River is just River, and I love him for it.
Let’s dive into “Returns!”

It was a topic of controversy right from the very beginning of its run in 2007, and time has not made Kid Nation look any better in retrospect. Tuesday’s (September 17) new episode of Dark Side of Reality TV turns to this very short-lived CBS reality competition series, which brought together 40 children from the ages of 8 to 15 to a private ranch in Bonanza City, New Mexico, to create their own brand new society, fit with government and services, with as little adult interactions as possible. What resulted, perhaps not surprisingly, was a Lord of the Flies reality redux, fit with chores, survival skills development, and even town meetings. Appearing in Dark Side of Reality TV to talk about the show, which was met with negative reviews and low ratings, were participants Anjay Ajodha, Jimmy Flynn, Olivia Cloer and her father, and Daniel Kyri, along with producer Emily Sinclair and attorney Eric Johnson.

It’s like Gilligan’s Island with no Gilligan. How in the world could there be Ridiculousness without Chanel West Coast (Chelsea Chanel Dudley)? Especially that laugh, which no one will replace on Ridiculousness anytime soon.

Now, the question is different. Can Chanel West Coast survive without Ridiculousness? Obviously, unless she liquidates her assets, withdraws all her cash, and has a backyard BBQ, she’ll be fine financially.

With all the reboots, remakes, adaptations, and resurrections out there, it was just a matter of time before Lord of the Flies made its way to the forefront. William Golding’s 1954 classic is no stranger to film adaptations, with versions in 1963 and 1990 that remained more or less faithful to the source material.
However, Lord of the Flies is both simple in its thematic depictions and complicated, especially at a time of bloated budgets, intense fan scrutiny, and political messaging.
For every movie or TV show that honors the source material, often resulting in fan and critical praise, there are ten that take a chainsaw to the original classics before curb-stomping them for good measure.
(Courtesy of MGM Studios Screenshot/YouTube)
On the bright side, Lord of the Flies is staying home. BBC commissioned it with Sony’s backing, and it will release on BBC iPlayer, BBC One, and Stan.

If Sauron, the great antagonist of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, could take the form of a weapon capable of unraveling the greatest high-fantasy books of our time, it would be Amazon’s Rings of Power.
Jeff Bezos’ itch to create a Game of Thrones-like alternative on Prime was a great idea on paper. If only it remained that way.
Years prior, Peter Jackson dared to adapt Tolkien’s massive, mythological world, resulting in one of the greatest film adaptations of our time, though it had its flaws.
(Matt Grace/Prime Video)
The Rings of Power is no such thing.
In many ways, it’s not even an adaptation but some distant cousin, inferior and sulking in the darkness — the Gollum of modern-day visual storytelling.
In a sane world, the Rings of Power should follow the path of Eomer, exile from Rohan, but for far better reasons.

On its surface, Tracker is a pretty straightforward show.
Colter Shaw, reward-seeker extraordinaire, gets a tip on a reward, heads to whatever town in America he needs to be at, and gets stuff done.
There are, of course, some outlier hours in which Colter meets up to help a friend or even those magical hours where he meets up with family, but by and large, that’s the gist of Tracker.
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)
So, with a simple premise, you wouldn’t think we’d have a lot of wants for Season 2, but you’d be very wrong!
The Justin Hartley-led show was a massive hit for CBS last season. With viewers enthralled with everything Colter Shaw, the show scored an early Season 2 pickup.
That gave the creators ample time to craft and plan for this season and comb through many of the things that worked during their freshman...

Welcome to the Wednesday night support meeting for those who survived the emotional trauma of The Ark Season 2 Episode 9! Donuts and refreshments are available in the back, so you can eat and drink while you cry.
Holy crap, that was a whirlwind of an episode! The creative team behind the show really said, “Let’s slow burn the audiences’ interest and then have them feel every human emotion in one episode.”
The Ark has been holding out on viewers because there was so much that worked in “Cycle of Violence.” From Captain Garnet crying to Angus putting the “bit” in bittersweet, this was The Ark as it transforms into its most entertaining form.
(Aleksandar Letic/Ark TV Holdings, Inc./Syfy)
Space just got a lot more interesting.

Whenever they competed on Dancing With the Stars, Olympians, especially gymnasts and figure skaters, ended up near the top of the leaderboard.
Now, two-time bronze model Olympian Stephen Nedoroscik joins Season 33. Will he follow the trend of winning the Golden Mirrorball Trophy or come close, like his teammates, including fellow gymnast Laurie Hernandez, who won Season 23?
Let’s discuss his odds of winning.
(Disney/Andrew Eccles) Olympians Have More Skills and Focus
Most Olympians possess more drive and focus, but gymnasts and figure skaters feature grace, musicality, and tumbling skills that many other stars don’t have.
Shawn Johnson was one of the youngest competitors to win Dancing With the Stars during Season 8. When she returned for the All-Stars season, she was the runner-up.

Drew Carey has been a consistent presence on our television screens for nearly 30 years.
And for most of that time, he’s occupied a succession of rather cozy niches:
Whether it was his long-running ABC sitcom, his beloved improv show, or his current role as host of the revered game show The Price Is Right, Carey has historically excelled at offering content that appeals to very specific sectors of the population.
In other words, he’s not the kind of celebrity whom you’re confronted with against your will when you scroll through your Facebook feed.
Unlike the Taylor Swifts and Travis Kelces of the world, Carey has to be sought out.
And the people who go searching for his brand of “aw, shucks” nerdy Midwestern charm usually know exactly what’s in store.

Dr. Friedrich Ritter (Jude Law) is loathe to repeat anyone else, so when his writer’s block finds him spitting out quotes from bigger, better, far more well-known philosophers, he knows things are going badly. Things have, in fact, been going badly for a very long time, as is prone to happen when someone moves to an uninhabited island and attempts to carve out a new world order. Still, had Friedrich — a very real person — been a bit more comfortable with the idea of repeating someone else, he likely would have found plenty of comfort in Jean-Paul Sartre’s perpetually prescient observation that “Hell is other people.”
Such is the thrust of Ron Howard’s darkly funny “Eden,” a fact-based story that follows what happened after Friedrich and his partner Dora Strauch (Vanessa Kirby) moved to a Galapagos Island after the end of World War I (and the start of...

Euphoria‘s Cassie and Nate made a date at TIFF tonight, but like their HBO series characters left off at the end of season, they weren’t in the same building at the same time. That said, actress Sydney Sweeney and actor Jacob Elordi respectively had world premieres going on at the same time with Eden and On Swift Horses.
Known for playing an unhinged guy on Euphoria, Elordi plays a drifter, who initially has a connection with his brother’s wife (played by Daisy Edgar-Jones) before finding true love in Diego Calva’s Henry amid casino poker tables. Meanwhile, Sweeney, isn’t exactly the Euphoria party girl in Eden, but has her fair share of crazy island life ala White Lotus to contend with in the Ron Howard directed survival period thriller. With Lost back in the air for its 20th anniversary, and the wait for Yellowjackets Season 3 stretching on, you might be looking for your next desert island TV fix. And the BBC has picked up your message in a bottle: the broadcaster (along with Australian streamer Stan) is preparing to strand a cast of kids on a faraway shore in a new four-part series take on Lord Of The Flies. William Golding’s novel is being adapted by none other than the perpetually-busy Jack Thorne, with director Marc Munden behind the camera. While the series was announced last year, new details are emerging now that it's started filming in Malaysia.
Most notably, Hans Zimmer has signed on to provide a score – along with Kara Talve – meaning this take on the castaway tale should sound suitably epic. “Hans has already shared his first sketches for the score, which are hugely inspiring.

The early 80s were a tumultuous period for much of the world. Tensions were high as the Second Cold War continued to play out between the U.S. and the Soviet Union; the ramifications of what would happen if the two nations fell out would be felt across the globe. America had elected Ronald Reagan to the Oval Office, and his passionate rhetoric about the Soviets did little to calm concerns about a possible third World War – which, thanks to nuclear weaponry, wouldn’t be as much a war as a worldwide holocaust. So yeah, it was a bit of a nerve-jangling time to be alive, but thankfully we still had the movies to chill us out.

Zoë Kravitz is aware of the comparison people have been making between Channing Tatum’s Blink Twice character and Jeffrey Epstein.
In an interview with IndieWire published Thursday, the actress, who makes her directorial debut with the film starring Tatum and Naomi Ackie, reiterated that despite similarities, Tatum’s character and the story is “all a metaphor” and not based on Epstein. Kravitz wrote the film alongside High Fidelity series writer E.T. Feigenbaum.
The film centers on Ackie’s character Frida, who is whisked away on an island vacation by billionaire Slater King (Channing Tatum). However, things take a darker turn. In Ackie’s Hollywood Reporter cover story, the film is described as a “sort of a Get Out meets Promising Young Woman” and a “social satire plus class warfare plus gender politics.”

Zombie apocalypse meets “Lord of the Flies” in “Parvulos,” the latest from adventurous Mexican genre specialist Isaac Ezban. Here, a familiar dystopian near-future of survival amid scarcity and violence is seen through the eyes of three underage brothers who’ve had to largely invent their own “new normal,” for lack of surviving adult minders.
By turns grotesque, whimsical, brutal and poignant, this episodic tale is more consistently interesting than riveting. Yet somehow its wayward, tonally diverse approach adds up to a distinctive hybrid that lingers in the mind, and should win over horror fans open to something more complicated than your basic undead gorefest. Not that there’s any lack of grisly (and gristly) content here.
A brief prologue of wildlife footage has a child talking in voiceover about lessons learned in Natural History class, though his father countered them by saying the only real constants in life are “family and change.

A scathing New York Times investigation into a reality series produced by YouTube star MrBeast with Amazon MGM studios paints an extremely negative picture of what contestants experienced.
The show, called Beast Games, brought thousands of people to Las Vegas to participate in various stunts, all for a shot at a grand prize of $5 million. Shooting for the competition started in July, with 2,000 contestants gathered in Nevada at Allegiant Stadium for several days. Competitors ate, slept, and lived inside the stadium.
The Times story is the latest blow against MrBeast’s empire, which has been under fire from a co-host’s alleged grooming of a minor and comments MrBeast himself made in his younger days on a podcast.
While fans of MrBeast’s YouTube contests likely expected strange and risky challenges, the Lord of the Flies atmosphere they encountered went beyond the usual.

Morpurgo’s yarn about a kid on a round the world voyage is adapted by Frank Cottrell-Boyce and attractively packaged as a family-friendly animation
Michael Morpurgo’s children’s story is a boy’s-own desert island adventure, closer in spirit to The Coral Island than Lord of the Flies, and here attractively presented as a family animated feature, adapted by the children’s laureate Frank Cottrell-Boyce. The story itself makes clear that the action must be happening around the time of the original novel’s publication in 1999, and not really the present day.
Michael (voiced by Aaron MacGregor) is a moody, lonely boy on a round-the-world sailing trip with his family, but his immaturity and unreliability exasperate his older teen sister (Raffey Cassidy) and parents (Sally Hawkins and Cillian Murphy). Unbeknown to any of them, Michael has smuggled his beloved dog Stella onboard and when their craft hits stormy seas,...

Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers” follow-up transports audiences back in time.
Guadagnino’s “Queer,” written by “Challengers” screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes and adapted from William S. Burroughs’ 1985-published novella, stars Daniel Craig as an American expat and war veteran who begins a romance with a younger man (Drew Starkey). The film, as expected, will debut in competition at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, and of today’s surprises was the confirmed casting of pop star Omar Apollo with a top-billed role in the film.

Nailing the final entry of a classic cinematic trilogy is always the most difficult to get right. Tasked with sticking the landing and tying the narrative strands across three movies together requires a precise amount of pre-planning that must be executed in ways that both trump its predecessors and satisfy fans at once with a compelling conclusion. Every once in a while, we get perfect trilogy-enders like The Good, the Bad and The Ugly, The Return of the King, or The Last Crusade. But more often than not, we get limp and lackluster results like The Godfather Part III, Jaws 3D, Terminator: Rise of the Machines, Alien 3, Back to the Future 3, Men in Black III, and countless other movies that fail to live up to the first two instalments. That begs the question, where does Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome register on the scale of all-time good or bad final chapters in movie trilogies?...

The development of a television show is always kind of a wacky, potentially surprising thing, but the creation of the classic CBS television series "Gilligan's Island" is truly one for the books. Series creator Sherwood Schwartz, who would also go on to create the immensely popular "The Brady Bunch" for ABC, famously developed the series purely based on his idea for the theme song. In his defense, it's an earworm and it explains the entire backstory for the show, so it's basically perfect as far as theme songs go, but there were some folks at CBS who just weren't entirely sold on the concept. In fact, the president of CBS at the time, Jim Aubrey, absolutely hated the show and wanted nothing to do with it!
Eventually, it was Aubrey himself who greenlit "Gilligan's Island," surprising Schwartz and everyone who helped create the initial test pilot. In the book "Sitcom...

These new audiences will be introduced to the highs (like the best music score in TV history) and lows of this drama about castaways having to survive on a mysterious island, and they'll do so years removed from the heated conversations that made this a controversial and incredibly popular show. TV is very different today than it was when this show premiered 20 years ago, in no small part thanks to "Lost" itself. Serialization and expansive mythologies may be commonplace now, but mystery boxes with dozens of ongoing plots providing fuel for dozens of Reddit threads full of speculation weren't the norm back then.

Some television shows we miss the most have only lasted one season.
Many of these series found their way into our hearts because of their emotional heart or their wit.
Some we’ve loved for decades, and others are newer favorites, but the TV Fanatic staff wished that many of these shows had gotten better resolutions or a fairer chance.
There are so many one-season wonders that never received a fair chance.
While we’d love to showcase all of them, here are nine that remain in our hearts.

My So-Called Life (ABC)
When My So-Called Life premiered in 1994, it faced heavy competition. Time slot-wise, it was up against Friends and other great shows of the period.
In terms of similar shows that aired on different days but were aimed at teens, the biggest competition was probably from Beverly Hills 90210.

Joining Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield and Ayo Edibiri, Chloë Sevigny is to co-star in Luca Guadagnino’s drama, After The Hunt.
Having already worked with the filmmaker for 2022’s Bones And All, Chloë Sevigny is to star in Luca Guadagnino’s forthcoming thriller, After The Hunt.
Sevigny is the latest addition to an already starry cast, which so far includes Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield, Ayo Edebiri and another Guadagnino favourite, Michael Stuhlbarg.
Guadagnino has been busy of late; his most recent film, the tennis-based love triangle Challengers, emerged to critical applause in April, while his next opus, Queer – starring Daniel Craig and based on the book of the same name by William S Burroughs – is out later in 2024.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the Sevigny news, After The Hunt is due to begin filming this summer – so presumably within the next few weeks. Written by Nora Garrett, it...

Let's get one thing out of the way before we head into a ranking that I'm sure people will be Very Normal About: George Miller's "Mad Max" saga is one of the most consistently great franchises in cinema history, and when it comes to the top three especially, all of these titles can easily swap placement depending on the day or a person's taste. In fact, we at /Film ranked the "Mad Max" films in 2022, but the ranking on the list you're reading today has shifted quite a bit. For one thing, Miller has unleashed "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" onto the world in the time since, and the original trilogy of films is no longer being swallowed whole by the frenzied hype of "Fury Road."
Miller made his feature directorial debut with the first "Mad Max" film in 1979, and the continued installments have only gotten bigger, bolder, and (usually) better.

Following Challengers, Luca Guadagnino will next direct After The Hunt, adding Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield to the cast.
Luca Guadagnino is flying high at the moment with the release of Challengers, the highly-anticipated love triangle tennis drama that has been scoring excellent reviews.
Guadagnino also has Queer on the way later this year too. That sounds equally promising given that Guadagnino is directing Daniel Craig in an adaptation of the William Burroughs book of the same name. That one shot last year and is set to release sometime this year (we think).
Looking beyond that, Guagagnino has a packed slate (more on that below) but when news broke last month that the director would be working with Julia Roberts on a project for Amazon, we suspected it might get fast-tracked and that seems to be the case.
According to Deadline, Andrew Garfield is in final talks to join After The Hunt,...
