British cinematographer Dick Pope, long-time collaborator of Mike Leigh, had died, it’s been announced. A very sad loss.
Some really awful news to wake up to this morning. Cinematographer Dick Pope has died at the age of 77. Ahead of the filming of what turned out to be his final movie, Hard Truths, Pope said he’d recently he’d undergone heart surgery.
Hard Truths – and it’s a superb film – has thus proven to be his final collaboration with writer/director Mike Leigh, and the pair have been at the heart of some of British cinema’s most notable films. They came together on 1990’s Life Is Sweet, and were regular collaborators from that point onwards.
Pope also, across a career that stretched nearly 50 years, worked with filmmakers such as Mike Newell, John Sayles, Gurinder Chadha, Christopher McQuarrie, Richard Linklater and Barry Levinson.

Dick Pope, the esteemed British cinematographer who received Academy Award nominations for his exquisite work on “The Illusionist” and Mike Leigh‘s “Mr. Turner,” has died at the age of 77. His death was confirmed by a publicist on his final film, Leigh’s “Hard Truths.”
“Hard Truths” producer Georgina Lowe shared the following statement: “On behalf of Mike, the team at Thin Man Films, and the cast and crew who worked regularly with Dick on our films for over 30 years, I wanted to say what a privilege it has been to have collaborated with him. His work, both with us, and on the eclectic collection of films he shot over his impressive career, was extraordinary. We have lost a friend and will miss him so much.”
Born in Bromley, Kent, in 1947, Pope became obsessed with still photography as a child and published some of his pictures in local papers as a teenager.

Exclusive: Octogenerian Mike Leigh isn’t slowing down in terms of output. The acclaimed British filmmaker is currently enjoying strong notices for new film Hard Truths, which recently debuted at TIFF and is playing this week at the London Film Festival.
Leigh took part in a Deadline Contenders panel in London this morning during which he dismissed any talk of retirement and confirmed that he is planning to shoot another movie next year.
“We’re planning to make the next movie in 2025. We’re raising the money now.”
The seven-time Oscar nominee wouldn’t be drawn on the subject or creatives involved in the project but Leigh often works with a team including producer Georgina Lowe and DoP Dick Pope.
In a recent interview Leigh admitted that the filmmaking process has become more physically challenging: “It’s a challenge physically. My cinematographer, Dick Pope, who I’ve worked with ever since Life Is Sweet,...

Few filmmakers can electrify the mundane as convincingly as Mike Leigh, whose trademark style—broadly characterized by discreet pacing and stripped-back storylines—belies a meticulous narrative rigor. Born from a well-documented process of intense rehearsal and improvisation with a cadre of trusted actors, Leigh’s scripts are astonishingly precise in their character work, spinning knotty, elaborate webs of tension out of generally unremarkable scenarios, such as drinks with a co-worker, or a weekly driving lesson. Implicitly, the films demand close attention. Blink and you may miss someone baring their soul.
Hard Truths, then, arrives as something of a challenge. Its central character, Pansy, isn’t particularly easy to sit with. In fact, she may be the most hard-bitten lead in Leigh’s entire roster. Nary a moment passes without her loudly, viciously slinging insults at anyone who crosses her path, be it her aptly named husband, Curtley (David Webber), her soft-spoken son,...

In the pantheon of unpleasant screen heroines, Pansy Deacon more than holds her own. Played by a ferocious Marianne Jean-Baptiste, the perpetually harried and hostile protagonist of Mike Leigh’s Hard Truths spews her venom on everyone she encounters — from family members to furniture store employees, and all manner of unlucky folks in between.
Stranding us with such a spectacularly disagreeable person for 97 minutes may seem like a cruel trick, and the movie will test the patience of viewers who prefer their main characters closer to the likable end of the spectrum. But fans of the British auteur will discern, in Leigh’s latest, his trademark generosity, alongside his willingness to show people at their wince-inducing worst. With this prickly, piercing new film, the writer-director presents an intriguing challenge, pushing the bounds of our empathy and asking us to look, really look, at someone from whom we’d surely avert...

Ask the British national treasure – star of Mike Leigh films aplenty, as well as countless TV and stage roles – about any of her brilliant performances by 6pm Sunday
How long can you be a national treasure for? Alison Steadman arguably holds some sort of record: ever since her breakthrough performance in the TV version of Abigail’s Party, back in 1977, she’s been a brilliant, comforting, spiky staple of British screen and stage.
Her collaborations with ex-husband Mike Leigh (she was pregnant with their first son shooting Abigail’s Party) are what defined her early career in the public consciousness. Life is Sweet, Hard Labour, Nuts in May; later the likes of Topsy-Turvy.

For the second year in a row, the race for best actress is wide open, with key precursors to the Academy Awards yet to be determined.
The Oscar nominees are Jessica Chastain for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” (Searchlight Pictures), Olivia Colman for “The Lost Daughter” (Netflix), Penélope Cruz for “Parallel Mothers” (Sony Pictures Classics), Nicole Kidman for “Being the Ricardos” (Amazon Studios) and Kristen Stewart for “Spencer” (Neon/Topic Studios). No performance is from a best picture nominee, a first since the 2005 lineup. And none of the contenders was nominated for a BAFTA Award, which “Nomadland” star Frances McDormand won prior to her Oscar victory last year. So how does each become a winner (in some cases for the second time)?
In a ceremony closed to media last month, the Globes awarded Kidman the lead actress drama prize for her turn as classic TV star Lucille Ball in the Aaron Sorkin feature.

U.K. director Mike Leigh directs films in a wide range of moods but his working-class dramas are what made his name. All or Nothing is an emotionally punishing story of everyday life on a lower rung of a stagnant economy, where nobody has dreams and pessimism is the order of the day. The bitterness and anger are most evident in the abusive attitudes and verbal brutality from one generation to the next, even with the caring, sensitive Penny (Lesley Manville) and the inoffensive Phil (Timothy Spall). Leigh’s players craft heartbreaking characters whose individual miseries can’t be dismissed. We invest heavily in the hope of a positive outcome even as everything we see says, ‘no.’ Yet the film’s honesty doesn’t want us to give up on these people.

Jon Gregory, editor of such films as Four Weddings and a Funeral, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and In Bruges has died, a representative confirmed to Deadline. He was 77.
Gregory worked with Mike Leigh across the director’s storied career, from an early short called The Short & Curlies to one of Leigh’s first features, High Hopes, to some of the director’s best-known work — such as Life Is Sweet, Naked and Secrets & Lies — to one of his most recent works, Peterloo. Harry Clein, 82, co-founder of Hollywood PR agencies Clein + Feldman and Clein + White, died June 18 in Atlanta. He suffered from chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder.
I first met Clein in Manhattan in 1978 when I worked in the United Artists publicity bullpen at 729 Seventh Ave. He represented Alan J. Pakula on the western “Comes a Horseman,” starring James Caan and Jane Fonda. He admired my Annie Hall vests and fedoras; we bonded over his encyclopedic knowledge of film and Broadway musicals, and remained friends as he founded bicoastal press agency Clein + Feldman in 1981 with Bruce Feldman. Their first client, Pakula’s “Sophie’s Choice,” won Meryl Streep her second acting Oscar.
When I first moved to Los Angeles as the West Coast Editor of Film Comment, Clein + Feldman hired me to be the unit publicist on what would turn out to be Sam Peckinpah’s last movie, “The Osterman Weekend” (1983), starring Rutger Hauer, Dennis Hopper,...

Harry Clein, a veteran film publicist who wrote the original press notes for Star Wars and helped develop the innovative internet campaign for The Blair Witch Project, died June 18 of chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder in Atlanta. He was 82.

There are moments when the two Scottish teens hate each other’s guts with bilious fervor, others when they’re the “dream team and that,” inseparable and co-dependent best friends à la Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal in Y Tu Mamá También, others still when their bromance veers into an uncharted, emotionally complex terrain. Timothy Spall stars in a fascinating, surprisingly non-morbid look into the life of Albert Pierrepoint, England’s reluctant celebrity hangman who dispatched hundreds of convicted killers, including Ruth Ellis and John Christie, not to mention 47 Nazi war criminals, in a literal marathon of the gallows. The artist of the noose kept up a double life to separate his execution duties from his domestic marriage … until General Montgomery blew his cover of anonymity. Eddie Marsan and Juliet Stevenson provide terrific acting support in this undeservedly obscure gem from director Adrian Shergold.

At this point, is it possible that filmmaker Mike Leigh will make a bad film? Sure, you may not be his biggest fan, but it’s hard to argue against the critical reception that his filmography has received over the years. Going back over three decades, Leigh’s work, including “Secrets & Lies,” “Life is Sweet,” and most recently, “Mr. Turner,” has been nothing but critically-acclaimed film after critically-acclaimed film.

Anorexia is one of those subjects that seem tailor-made for a medium as darkly fascinated by bodies and self-destructive obsessions as film, and yet it always comes across as phony, simply because actors can never really look anorexic; thin and baggy-eyed is a long way from the sight of skin sucked so tightly over bones that it appears that a person’s body might crumple in on itself at any moment. That doesn’t mean that movies can’t tackle the psychology, but with only a few exceptions (e.g., the English writer-director Mike Leigh’s 1990 film Life Is Sweet, which depicts a young, working-class bulimic woman), films about eating disorders take the form of hokey, know-the-symptoms public service pamphlets aimed at teens. There’s a reason why the topic is popularly associated with cheesy TV movies. The Netflix-produced To The Bone, which was written and directed by TV ...

The penultimate season of HBO's Game of Thrones has added the legendary Jim Broadbent to its cast, according to EW. As usual, details on his character are pretty much nonexistent, and all we have to go on is that the role will be a "significant" one. Speculation seems to be pointing to one of the maesters Sam is set to study under at the Citadel (Archmaester Marwyn, Aka Marwyn the Mage, perhaps?), but now that the show has surpassed George R.R. Martin's source material, it's quite possible he'll be playing someone we haven't even encountered in the books yet. Broadbent has starred in a wide array of classic movies over the years (Time Bandits, Brazil, Life is Sweet etc), but he'll be best known to the younger generation as Horace Slughorn in the Harry Potter movies. Game of Thrones returns for its seventh season next year.

"I have a weak bladder when it comes to this sort of stuff, so be careful," "Tangerine" director Sean Baker warns at the beginning of his trip inside the Criterion closet, and though he doesn't get that excited, his enthusiasm is infectious nonetheless. As Magnolia mounts pathbreaking Oscar campaigns for transgender stars Kitana Kiki Rodriguez (for Best Actress) and Mya Taylor (for Best Supporting Actress), his choices are a reminder than his sun-kissed L.A. adventure, shot on an iPhone, is rooted in the vernacular of the art film. Bearing that wide grin that is familiar to everyone who has seen one of these videos before, Baker opens up the magical room and warns the cameraman that he has “a weak bladder for this kind of stuff,” but who among us could remain in full control of our faculties when entering that holy place? Fortunately for fans of Baker’s film, the director isn’t just Christmas shopping and upgrading titles from laserdisc; he also lets us in on some of his influences: Mike Leigh’s “Naked” and “Life Is Sweet” are cited as being major influences, specifically as seen...

Chicago – The thing that can be said for British writer/director Mike Leigh is that it’s never known what story may capture his fancy. The auteur of “Happy-Go-Lucky,” “Topsy-Turvy,” “Secrets and Lies” and “Life is Sweet” now tackles the last quarter century of a notable British painter’s life, through his strange maneuverings and unconventionality, in “Mr. Turner.”

The story, however, is a mishmash of scenes rather than a cohesive narrative, and...
