Javier Bardem had the sweetest things to say about wife Penelope Cruz while being honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Oscar-winning actor thanked his wife during his acceptance speech at the 2024 San Sebastian International Film Festival on Friday night (September 20) in San Sebastian, Spain.

The ceremony took place almost exactly 30 years after Javier won the Best Actor prize at the festival for the movie Numbered Days.

Penelope appeared to tear up during the speech as she blew kisses to Javier from her seat.

Cementing its reputation as a harbinger of emerging talent, Madrid-based Latido Films has acquired the international sales rights to “Tras el Verano,” the debut film from Yolanda Centeno picked out as one of Variety’s 10 Women Directors to Watch from Spain, compiled in 2021.

Alfa Pictures is handling distribution in Spain.

Following on hits such as Colombia’s “Killing Jesus” and “Carmen & Lola” and “Lullaby” from Spain, this acquisition not only underscores Latido’s interest in nurturing and promoting fresh, innovative voices in cinema but also highlights the strength of a new generation of talent emanating from the Spanish-speaking world.

Centeno’s debut feature has attracted strong talent in the form of Goya and Gaudi winners Ruth Gabriel (“Numbered Days”) and Alexandra Jiménez (“The Distances” “100 Metres”).

Joining them is actor Juan Diego Botto whose own directorial debut “On The Fringe” reaped recognition at the Goyas, Venice and other festivals.

Bardem will receive his award at the Kursaal Auditorium in San Sebastian on Sept. 22.

The Spanish festival has been a regular stopping spot for Bardem in his long career. He has attended San Sebastian more than 20 times over the past 30 years, from his festival debut with Golden Balls in 1993 through his most recent festival screening, of Fernando León de Aranoa’s The Good Boss back in 2021. In 1994, he received San Sebastian’s Silver Shell for best actor for two roles: In Imanol Uribe’s Numbered Days and Gonzalo Suárez’s El detective y la muerte.

Already selected as this year’s Spanish Best International Feature Film submission for the Oscars, Fernando León de Aranoa’s dark workplace comedy “The Good Boss,” starring Javier Bardem, has set a new record for most Spanish Academy Goya Award nominations with 20, ahead of Icíar Bollaín’s standout Basque drama “Maixabel” with 14 and Pedro Almodóvar’s “Parallel Mothers,” which secured eight.

The 20 nominations include: Best picture, director, original screenplay, original music, lead actor, three nominations for supporting actor, supporting actress, two nominations for best new male actor and one for best new female actor, production design, cinematography, editing, art direction, costume design, makeup, sound design and special effects. It’s a total which breaks an almost 30-year-old record held by Imanol Uribe’s “Numbered Days,” which received 19 nominations in 1994.

León’s latest, produced by The Mediapro Studio and Reposado PC, is a return to a fruitful partnership between the director and his leading man.

Lending some bigger movie heft to the Malaga market, Latido Films is bringing onto the international sales scene two thrillers – though very different propositions – from Academy Award winning producer Tornasol Media (“The Secret in Their Eyes”).

“Thrillers have high export potential, but they’re a highly competitive market and since Spanish movies can’t compete with U.S. films’ star power, they have to offer something else,” said Latido Films head Antonio Saura.

Both in production, what Imanol Uribe’s “La Mirada de Lucía” and Oscar Aibar’s “El sustituto” offer is high quality entertainment grounded in different but powerful social realities.

The directors go about addressing that reality in highly different ways, however.

But it's at the Goyas, the Spanish Oscars, where he reigns supreme.
