Sometimes a movie can be a best horror movie you never saw candidate but there are other instances where a movie has been seen and talked about but altogether lost to time. Richard Stanley has had a long career in terms of time he has been active but a very small amount of output in terms of actual number of projects. While the saga of his journey to direct the big budget remake of The Island of Doctor Moreau and subsequent firing has been widely captured in the documentary Lost Soul and his latest success with The Color Out of Space was highly regarded but tinged with controversial allegations, he had a couple of gems before all that. Dust Devil, his sophomore effort, still very much so belongs in the Best Horror You Never Saw category and I will get to that one too, but Hardware (pick up a copy...

Brad Dourif has had an incredible acting career that stretches back more than fifty years – and back in the early days of that career, he even earned a “Best Actor in a Supporting Role” Oscar nomination for his performance in the 1975 classic One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Over a decade later, he started playing the role he is best known for, that of Charles Lee Ray, a.k.a. Chucky, a serial killer who uses voodoo to transfer his soul into the body of a doll. Dourif is now 74 years old, so when we hear that he has decided to retire from acting, it’s totally understandable… but while talking about his retirement, Dourif has also made sure to assure fans that his days of Chucky are not over. He will still continue to work on any Chucky projects that might come up.

Nick Oliveri has announced two career-spanning compilations, N.O. Hits at All Vols. 8 and 9, continuing his running series of the same name. Both arrive January 19th via Heavy Psych Sounds.
As a teaser, Oliveri offered up the Vol. 8 opener “Chains and Shackles” — the first official release of a 2010 collaborative track with Slash.
The song originates as an outtake from Slash’s 2010 self-titled album and is finally receiving a proper release on Oliveri’s comp. His unhinged snarls and Slash’s frenetic riffing call back to the stoner-punk that the former contributed to the early Queens of the Stone Age albums. The track was even produced by Eric Valentine, so that sound is definitely there.
“Slash wrote the music and Eric Valentine and myself wrote the words,” said Oliveri in a press release. “I feel the song is hard-driving and it has the right amount of uncensored dirt, filth, sex,...

If anything, the first two Terminator movies have remained among the greatest, most memorable science fiction films to grace the big screen in the past thirty or so years. Not only did they launch the respective careers of director James Cameron and actor Arnold Schwarzenegger into the stratosphere, but they also happen to be highly quotable, serving as inspiration for many Austrian Death Machine songs.
In the time since, three separate sequels have seen the light of day, though all proved to be highly divisive among moviegoers, if not downright reviled. Personally, I didn’t hate any film in the series and felt that Rise of the Machines and Salvation seemed like the natural progression of the overall story. Still, one can’t overlook the fact that the series’ timeline had become overly convoluted, with both Salvation and Genesys having intended on kicking off trilogies, only to fail at the...

As a film critic and metal enthusiast, I can’t resist a good meeting of mediums. Movies like Deathgasm utilize the devil’s music to further themes and action, while bands like Austrian Death Machine (whose songs are based on Arnold Schwarzenegger quotes) exist to pay homage to pop culture. Movies may be my life, but metal provides my soundtrack – so imagine the speed of my heartbeat after being asked to a “Star Wars themed metal show.”
That’s the exact description a fellow NYC critic came to me with. A Saturday night concert at Webster Hall, featuring a Star Wars themed metal band from Lancaster, Pennsylvania in the headlining slot. Galactic Empire is their name, and they don’t need a Death Star blast to melt your faces.
I arrived halfway through the second opener, Metalfier, but while the growly triumvirate were wrapping things up, Galactic Empire was already making their presence known.

The '90s were a terrible era for a lot of things. Popular music? Check. Awful fashion? Double check. Horror movies? Well, let's look at one of those...Death Machine is the brainchild of Stephen Norrington. Norrington would later go on to make his biggest mainstream impression with the first Blade movie, however, in 1994 he was mainly an FX guy for hire. Death Machine is Norrington's cyberpunk version of Hardware, Die Hard, or Alien, only instead of terrorists and extraterrestrial monsters, the antagonist here is a mad scientist and his deadly attack robot. This is a film which could only have been made in the '90s, its aesthetic is very clear and shares a similar vision of the near future with films like Akira or Osamu...

Never mind The Terminator and Ed-209, what about Eve, Hector or Warbeast? Here's a pick of 15 less famous killer robots from the movies...
"They say Zapp Brannigan single-handedly saved the Octillion system from a horde of rampaging killbots!" enthused Leela in classic the Futurama episode, Love's Labour's Lost In Space.
It was, reflected the alcoholic, cigar-smoking robot Bender, "A grim day for Robotkind", before adding as an afterthought, "Eh, but we can always build more killbots."
Killer robots are a longstanding staple of science fiction cinema, and if we were to compile the list of the best and most celebrated, it would probably read pretty much like everyone else's - The Terminator, 2001: A Space Odyssey and the Sentinels from X-Men: Days Of Future Past would all get a mention.

The Academy has announced the new class of invited members for 2014 and, as is typical, many of which are among last year's nominees, which includes Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Lupita Nyong'o and June Squibb in the Actors branch not to mention curious additions such as Josh Hutcherson, Rob Riggle and Jason Statham, but, okay. The Directors branch adds Jay and Mark Duplass along with Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve and Thomas Vinterberg. I didn't do an immediate tally of male to female additions or other demographics, but at first glance it seems to be a wide spread batch of new additions on all fronts. The Academy is also clearly attempting to aggressively bump up the demographics as this is the second year in a row where they have added a large number of new members, well over the average of 133 new members from 2004 to 2012. Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years a Slave were two of the 271 artists and industry leaders invited to become members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines nominations and winners at the annual Oscars. The entire list of Academy membership—which numbers about 6,000—isn’t public information so the annual invitation list is often the best indication of the artists involved in the prestigious awards process. It’s worth noting that invitations need to be accepted in order for artists to become members; some artists, like two-time Best Actor winner Sean Penn, have declined membership over the years.

Pop quiz: What do Chris Rock, Claire Denis, Eddie Vedder and Josh Hutcherson all have in common? Answer: They could all be Oscar voters very soon. The annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences invitation list always makes for interesting reading, shedding light on just how large and far-reaching the group's membership is -- or could be, depending on who accepts their invitations. This year, 271 individuals have been asked to join AMPAS, meaning every one of them could contribute to next year's Academy Awards balloting -- and it's as diverse a list as they've ever assembled. Think the Academy consists entirely of fusty retired white dudes? Not if recent Best Original Song nominee Pharrell Williams takes them up on their offer. Think it's all just a Hollywood insiders' game? Not if French arthouse titans Chantal Akerman and Olivier Assayas join the party. It's a list that subverts expectation at every turn.

It's hard to think of many movies more intentionally, non-ironically derivative than Proteus (1995).

In the wake of the disaster that is Lambesis' personal life, he's released what is one of the silliest and most comical music albums of the year with Austrian Death Machine's third album '...

Ever since California's Governator made his return to Hollywood, he's talked openly about starring in sequels to just about everything he's ever participated in. ("Kindergarten Cop 2," anyone?).
The passable but somewhat laughable "The Last Stand" was a box-office bomb. To be fair to the Austrian Oak, plenty of "The Expendables" guys had movies bomb this year. But it makes sense that he'd return to the franchise well.
While in Australia for something called the 21st Century Financial Education Summit seminar, Arnold revealed that shooting will commence on a fifth "Terminator" movie in January, 2014! But in the same breath, he spoke about the rumored "Twins" sequel, which he envisions as "Triplets" with Eddie Murphy showing up alongside him and Danny DeVito. He also brought up "King Conan," which will presumably do away with any continuity from the failed 2011 "Conan" reboot.

The Missing Image – Rithy Panh
Section: Un Certain Regard
Buzz: Cambodian director Rithy Panh, perhaps best known for his 2003 documentary, S21: The Khmer Rouge Death Machine or a 2008 Isabelle Huppert film, The Sea Wall, unveils this intriguing hybrid documentary/Claymation feature in Un Certain Regard, and it has already been compared to the likes of Ari Folman’s Waltz With Bashir. Luckily, Panh’s latest has already received distribution deals through Paris based Film Distribution (Fd) ahead of its world premiere, which bodes well for a project that may very well introduce Panh to a wider audience.

Reuters reports that Tim Lambesis, the 32-year-old frontman for metal band As I Lay Dying, was arrested in California on Tuesday for allegedly hiring an undercover detective to orchestrate the murder of his estranged wife. "The information came to us late last week. We acted quickly on it. I believe that we averted a great tragedy," said San Diego County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Jan Caldwell. Lambesis's wife, Meggan, filed for divorce in September 2012. The former couple has three children who they adopted from Ethiopia. As I Lay Dying got its start in 2000 and has been categorized as a Christian act; Lambesis also has an Arnold Schwarzenegger-centric side project, Austrian Death Machine. He'll be arraigned on Wednesday or Thursday.

2013′s Un Certain Regard section carries a whopping five first time feature filmmakers that’ll be measuring themselves up against auteur cinema heavyweights. While we nailed predictions for Alain Guiraudie’s L’inconnu du Lac, Rebecca Zlotowski’s Grand Central and the more international flavored title of the Sundance hit, Fruitvale Station by Ryan Coogler, we didn’t see major players such as S21: The Khmer Rouge Death Machine director Rithy Panh, or Paradise Now‘s Hany Abu-Assad (who brings us the first fully-financed film to come out of the Palestinian cinema industry) or Mohammad Rasoulof from Goodbye fame (brings us what is surely an aptly titled film in Anonymous) in the horizons.
As Nicholas mentioned yesterday, this would be a year of the women filmmakers (by Cannes standards) – six of them find themselves in the Un Certain Regard category. Sofia Coppola is joined by the baffling inclusion of...

Other notable films include "Enemy at the Gates", "About a Boy", "Constantine", "The Fountain" and an Academy Award-winning performance as 'Tessa Quayle' in "The Constant Gardener".

This morning, Bethesda released details about the voice cast for their upcoming supernatural revenge title Dishonored, from Arkane Studios. Among the names joining the cast are a whole mess of Academy Awards and Golden Globes. So the game's gonna sound good at least, right?
More details after the jump.
A curious note: among the cast announcements, there's no one lending their pipes to the role of assassin and lead character Corvo. Does that mean Bethesda's not announcing it yet or that the character is simply going to be voiceless throughout the campaign?
In any event, we've got Susan Sarandon onboard as Granny Rags, a deranged blind woman and former aristocrat and Carrie Fisher as an announcer spouting government propaganda throughout the game. Kill Bill star Michael Madsen plays another assassin here as Daud. This isn't his first go-round with game Vo after he voiced the English dub of Yakuza for Sega.

With "Rock of Ages" thundering through theaters on Friday, the retro spotlight will once again shine on the crazy '80s, the decade of decadence when rock stars were true rock stars and unapologetic about being so.
In anticipation of the nostalgia this will inspire, we're looking at nine hard-rock and heavy-metal films that have made noise in the mainstream. Horns up!
9. 'Detroit Rock City' (1999)
While a majority of teen flicks tend to focus on love, partying and sex, 'Detroit Rock City' has a singular directive -- getting four teenage Kiss fanatics to a concert after one of their mothers burns their tickets and banishes her son to Catholic school. Naturally that's not going to stop them, and once reunited, the four garage bandmates (including Edward Furlong) go on a wild road trip that involves drugs, fights, a botched mugging and robbery, a strip club contest and other ridiculous situations.

Today is the day, military shooter fans who also happen to love killing zombies. The "Call of Duty: Black Ops" Escalation map pack is available right this very second on Xbox 360. If you're willing to plunk down $15 (1200 Microsoft Points), five brand new multiplayer maps and the star-studded "Call of the Dead" zombie mode are all yours. The multiplayer maps are fine and all, but this great-looking undead map is why I'm actually excited.
"The tide will rise...and so will the body count."
See, I wasn't joking around about the star-studded cast. Beyond the fact that Treyarch enlisted the help of zombie aficionado George Romero for "Call of the Dead," the mode's characters run the gamut of horror celebrities. Danny "Machete" Trejo, Robert "Freddy Kruger" England, Sarah "Buffy" Michelle Gellar, and Michael "Walking Dead" Rooker will all make appearances in the game.

Rick Baker. Friend of apes. Maker of monsters. Seven time Oscar winner. And that lucky number seven was for The Wolfman, shared with fellow Efx maestro Dave Elsey. Their on-stage speech was great, but the extended Thank You Cam was even better. Both Baker and Elsey thanked Jack Pierce and Dick Smith for inspiring them. Though there were grumblings online that the Academy clip showed the CG transformation rather then the make-up. It is always a treat to see our own getting the gold.

With all that nasty governing business now behind him, action star Arnold Schwarzenegger is looking to return his focus to a life back behind the cameras,, and the possibilities are endless.
Arnie made the announcement on his Twitter page, where he dropped the news. "Exciting news. My friends at CAA have been asking me for 7 years when they can take offers seriously. Gave them the green light today," said the former Governator.
One thing I think we can count on? A return to the Predator franchise. Mark our words ... Dutch will ride again (with a little help from the CGI wizards of course). To celebrate the good news, how about a little Austrian Death Machine?

Stephen Norrington will probably go down in film history has the man who had a fight with Sean Connery on the set of The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen. It’s a shame because his work is interesting if miscalculated to some effect. Death Machine and Blade displayed moments of wonderful invention and vision but Norrington just doesn’t like playing ball. He’s flown the nest on The Crow remake after ‘creative differences’. Yawn.
One of the biggest news items attached to this was the involvement of Mark Wahlberg – which would have been bloody awful, to be honest. The actor who’s a dreadful leading man but shines like a mega-star when in an ensemble told Cinematical of his brief involvement:
“We never committed to making the movie. They talked to me about it and there was a director attached who I was a fan of, and he’s no longer doing it.

Stephen Norrington is one of those director’s often brimming with great ideas and often let down by other events. If anybody has seen the brilliant b-movie Death Machine, you’ll know what I’m on about. Same goes for Blade and The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Tom Sawyer? Wtf? Alas, Norrington has been rather quiet since his boxing days with Sean Connery but all that is about to change.
MTV managed to grab word with The Crow producer Edward Pressman for an update on Norrington’s remake. He confirmed the production will begin shooting later in the year and the director is planning all kinds of great stuff.
“The Crow itself is a character in this movie: it’s not just a bird. It’s got a personality… and a more active role in the story.”

Stephen Norrington is a mysterious chap. He doesn’t do publicity for his movies. At all. The last film he did was a disaster known as The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Most of us remember it as the film that announced Sean Connery’s retirement. Norrington has taken a lengthy break from the business but is coming back, hopefully, with the one-two punch of, The Lost Patrol and a re-gothed Crow movie. The Crow is most famous for the set death of Brandon Lee – son of legend, Bruce Lee, when a blank fired from a gun lodged into his abdomen. There was the dreadful sequel, City of Angels, and an even more ropey effort later on. Shock Till You Drop managed to to get him to speak a few syllables that formed words that formed sentences from the press-shy director. Norrington says The Crow is approaching a green light with...

It’s been a quiet few years for the former special effects man turned film director, Stephen Norrington. There was a rather expensive disaster and Sean Connery career-ender called The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, but nothing since. The film has since passed into film history as an expensive flop. His two previous flicks: Death Machine (for anybody who’s seen it) and Blade demonstrated a vast amount of talent. There have been rumours afoot of Norrington “re-flying” The Crow (see what I did there?), but The Hollywood Reporter have it that he’s instead been hired by Legendary Pictures to re-write and direct a supernatural WW2 thriller called The Lost Patrol. Norrington himself has said:
“Hardware, heroes, grime and insane monsters.”
The original script was written by Andrew Hilton and purchased by Legendary Pictures some time last year and passed to Matt Cirulnick before Norrington got his mitts on it.

Last we heard from Stephen Norrington he was preparing a reboot of The Crow. But it looks like that'll have to wait, as it's just been announced that he'll be re-writing and directing The Lost Patrol for Legendary Pictures. The original screenplay by Andrew Hilton was picked up by the production company last year, and has already undergone a re-write by Matt Cirulnick, who scripted the as-yet unproduced, Avebury-themed Stones for Ridley Scott a couple of years ago. Norrington says the supernaturally-tinged World War 2 action thriller contains "hardware, heroes, grime and insane monsters", and therefore presses all his "geek buttons".Even though we poked ourselves in the eyes like everyone else did, rather than witness the career-derailing unravelment of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, we're still rooting for Norrington here. We've had a lot of time for him since way back in the Death Machine days, and we seriously loved him for Blade.

Back in 1993, Megadeth's Dave Mustaine was the second interview I'd ever conducted. Only 16 at the time and sporting a horrible Iowa-style metalhead mullet, taking a seat next to Dave was a huge deal. One thing that was clear to me even in my youth was that there's two types of metal fans: one's that like Megadeth, and one's that don't. The very traits that draw some listeners into the fold are the same that drive others away. Megadeth is a unique thrash-metal beast.

I almost feel bad that we haven't given enough props to Austrian Death Machine around here. Fangoria readers should take notice, as the band is fronted by "Ahhnold", as in a comedic nod to the Governor of California, the hunter of Predators, The Running Man, the guy who had a Total Recall... you get it.
Well, today As I Lay Dying frontman Tim Lambesis and California frontman Ahhnold are back for round two with the release of Austrian Death Machine’s Double Brutal, the follow up to 2008’s highly successful (and, well, brutal) release, Total Brutal. With an appetite for all things barbarous, Austrian Death Machine ups the ante with Double Brutal. This two-disc goliath features one disc of all new heavy tracks in the tradition of all of Ahhnold’s greatest cinematic moments and a second disc of cover songs including songs originally performed by Metallica, Megadeth, Misfits, Judas Priest and more,...

How I missed this amount of pure fucking awesome is beyond me. I mean shit, I hadn't really lived until I discovered Austrian Death Machine.
Adm was formed as a solo project by As I Lay Dying frontman Tim Lambesis. From what I've read, there is another Arnold tribute band called ArnoCorps that is pretty awesome too, but from listening to the tracks thus far, Lambesis puts anyone who ever thought about doing this to shame. With song titles like Get to the Choppa, It's Not a Tumor, and If It Bleeds We Can Kill It, this stuff will make you a goddamned sexual Tyrannosaurus.

You make a mildly entertaining little film called Death Machine about a battle-bot run amok, and three years later you release the kick-ass, franchise-starting Blade. It's a big success, but instead of capitalizing on it you disappear from the directing scene. Three years pass and you return ...

It only takes 14 years for a film to be remade. Alex Proyas' The Crow, starring Brandon Lee, is up next, with Relativity Media negotiating with producer Ed Pressman to acquire the film franchise. Stephen Norrington has signed on to both write and direct the "reinvention" of the film, which was originally based on the comic created by James O'Barr. The original film, which hit theaters in 1994, is about a rock musician who is murdered trying to rescue his girlfriend from thugs but returns from the dead a year later to avenge his and his girlfriend's death. "Whereas Proyas' original was gloriously gothic and stylized, the new movie will be realistic, hard-edged and mysterious, almost documentary-style," Norrington said. Stephen Norrington has been laying dormant ever since he directed The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen in 2003. Norrington is an accomplished sculptor who made his directorial debut with Death Machine then went ...
