In 2016 a third film was announced, Weekend At Bernie's III: The Corpse Awakens. The production did not get past the development stage, but the script is readily available online and is a firm favourite at fan table reads.

According to Barry Bostwick's Q and A at the Spooky Empire horror convention in May of 2021, a completely different actress was cast as Claudia but unfortunately suffered a mental break down 2 weeks into filming causing production to cast Troy Beyer at a moments notice and reshoots were made.

Bernie is shown wearing round John Lennon style sunglasses at the beginning of the movie. In the final scene of Weekend at Bernie's he was wearing aviator style sunglasses. His round glasses were stolen by the bratty kid who buried Bernie in the sand.
