It is impossible to overstate Quincy Jones' influence on music and the music business throughout the second half of the 20th century. There wasn't a genre that Jones, who passed away yesterday at the age of 91, couldn't master as a composer, producer, performer, or all three. He kicked off his career playing trumpet for vibraphone god Lionel Hampton, served as trumpeter and music director for Dizzy Gillespie, and produced effervescent pop hits like "It's My Party" for Lesley Gore while expanding his range compositionally via jazz LPs and, perhaps most importantly, film music -- a field where the African-American artist stood out among a sea of white men.

I, Robot director Alex Proyas is currently in pre-production on an adaptation of Karel Capek’s seminal 1920 play, R.U.R.

Alex Proyas, director of such movies as The Crow, Dark City, I, Robot and more besides, is currently in pre-production on a film called R.U.R, it’s been revealed. It’s based on the 1920 play of the same name originally written in 1920, and is famous for introducing the word ‘robot’ into the sci-fi lexicon.

Proyas has written the screenplay himself, and if the brief description published by Deadline is anything to go by, it’ll be at least somewhat close to Capek’s original story. Set in a future where robots are mass-produced on an island factory called Rossum’s Universal Robots, the technology has long since spread worldwide, largely replacing human labour. Tim McGovern, a visual effects veteran who earned an Oscar for his work on 1990’s Total Recall, died Saturday. He was 68.

His wife, Reena NeGandhi, posted the news on Facebook.

“Today is the saddest day of my life,” she wrote. “My Husband Tim McGovern, an Oscar winner for the VFX in 1990’s for Total Recall and several more awards from the Ves has died today. He passed away in his sleep.”

A digital effects pioneer, McGovern was a Visual Effects Society board member for nearly two decades. He served as vice chair as well as founding co-chair of the Ves Awards committee. In October, McGovern received the Ves Founders Award and was bestowed lifetime Ves membership.

Alan Arkin, the Oscar-winning actor who starred in films like Little Miss Sunshine, Argo, and Glengarry Glen Rose during a career that spanned over 60 years, has died at the age of 89.

Arkin’s sons Adam, Matthew, and Anthony confirmed their father’s death in a statement to People. “Our father was a uniquely talented force of nature, both as an artist and a man,” his sons wrote. “A loving husband, father, grand and great grandfather, he was adored and will be deeply missed.” No cause of death was provided.

February ushers in a new slate of movies and TV shows making their way to HBO and HBO Max, from a slew of James Bond movies to the recently released Olivia Colman-led “Empire of Light” to, yes, the Puppy Bowl.

Mike Hagerty, the prolific character actor who recently starred in HBO’s critically acclaimed dramedy “Somebody Somewhere,” died Thursday in Los Angeles. He was 67.

Bridget Everett, who played Hagerty’s on-screen daughter in “Somebody Somewhere,” shared the news via her Instagram on Friday.

A veteran character actor with over 100 credits in various television shows and movies, Hagerty was also known for his recurring role in the hit NBC sitcom “Friends,” where he played Mr. Treeger, the superintendent of the apartment complex that the majority of the main cast lived in. He also was a main cast member on Fox’s “The George Carlin Show” and on HBO’s “Lucky Louie.” Born and raised in Chicago, Hagerty was noted for his distinctive mustache and thick Chicago accent and got his start as a performer at the city’s famed improv theater company Second City.

Character actor Mike Hagerty — who appeared on shows including Friends, Cheers, The George Carlin Show, and Curb Your Enthusiasm — died Thursday at age 67.

Comedian Bridget Everett, who stars in HBO’s Somebody Somewhere, shared the news of his death on Instagram Friday. “With great sadness, the family of Michael G. Hagerty announced his death yesterday in Los Angeles. A beloved character actor, his love of his hometown of Chicago and his family were the cornerstones of his life,” she wrote. In Mike Myers’ new six-part Netflix series, “The Pentaverate,” the Canadian comedy legend plays eight new characters. Add them to a repertoire that includes such beloved weirdos as Wayne Campbell, Austin Powers, Dieter, Dr. Evil and Shrek, and the streamer seems eager to tout their partnership with the actor, pairing him with director David O. Russell for an hour-long mutual-appreciation session at the Netflix Is a Joke comedy festival.

Comedy legend Mike Myers is back at it again, this time portraying eight different characters in the new Netflix limited series “The Pentaverate.” The show, from the mind of Myers, is based on a joke from his 1993 romantic comedy,“So I Married an Axe Murderer.”

In that film, Myers also played multiple roles, including not just the lead character, Charlie Mackenzie, but his father, Stuart. It’s Stuart who explains the Pentaverate as a nefarious secret society. Here’s the relevant quote:

Thomas Schlamme, the president of the Directors Guild of America who was first elected in 2017, will step down from his role next month.

Schlamme announced his departure in a farewell letter posted on the DGA website and sent to members as part of a monthly magazine. He’ll exit his role on Sept. 18 at the DGA’s upcoming Biennial Convention, at which point elections for a new president will be held.

Schlamme was initially elected to a two-year term in 2017 and was re-elected for his second term in 2019. While there’s no concrete rule about how many terms a president can serve, it’s been a tradition that presidents serve no more than two terms.

Mike Myers’ new Netflix comedy series has officially been titled “The Pentaverate,” with the show adding six new cast members.

Ken Jeong, Keegan-Michael Key, Debi Mazar, Richard McCabe, Jennifer Saunders, and Lydia West will all appear alongside Myers in the series, with Myers set to play seven new characters himself. Production is currently underway on the six-episode show.

In the half-hour series, five men have been working to influence world events for the greater good since the Black Plague of 1347. As the show begins, one unlikely Canadian journalist finds himself embroiled in a mission to uncover the truth and just possibly save the world himself.

Les McKeown, who sang lead for Scottish ’70s hitmakers Bay City Rollers during its heyday, died Tuesday at home, his family announced. He was 65. No cause of death was revealed.

Amazon’s most prominent original series for April 2021 is undoubtedly Them from multi-hyphenate Lena Waithe. This horror anthology’s first season, subtitled “Covenant”, will center on a Black family in the 1950s who move from North Carolina to a white neighborhood in Los Angeles. It premieres on April 9. Given its name and premise, Them is drawing some (largely joke-y) comparisons to Jordan Peele’s Us on social media. But hey, the world could always use some more Us.

While the first day of spring technically belongs to March, everyone knows that it kicks into high gear in April. To celebrate the changing of the seasons, Hulu is finally bringing back its signature original series for April 2021.

Season 4 of the multiple Emmy award-winning The Handmaid’s Tale premieres on April 28. It’s been awhile since we’ve seen June and her dystopian world. In fact, it’s been so long that our own world decided to endure its own dystopian pandemic in the meantime. Hopefully this series’ return will mean we can keep our political and social collapses on television where they belong.

Aside from The Handmaid’s Tale, Hulu isn’t brining much else to the table in terms of originals this month. Thankfully, the one other original that Hulu has in store for April sounds completely righteous. Sasquatch, the latest docuseries from the Duplass brothers producing team, will cover exactly what the title promises.

This was difficult, because boy oh boy has Saturday Night Live brought us a mass of talent who have since become mega-stars in movie and/or television. I had to make this list, scrap the list, edit the list, add and take away from the list, and do it all over again before landing on a final ten. Veteran TV director Thomas Schlamme has been re-elected president of the Directors Guild of America for a two-year term.

Schlamme was selected by the acclamation of 155 delegates at the DGA’s convention on Saturday at DGA headquarters in Los Angeles. DGA presidents typically serve for two two-year terms, as did Schlamme’s predecessor Paris Barclay. The DGA represents more than 18,000 members.

The Austin Powers and former Saturday Night Live favorite will star in and executive produce a six-episode comedy series for the streaming service. Netflix is describing the untitled show as a limited series.

Few details are known about the project at the moment, but Myers will play multiple characters. It's something he's done before, playing several roles in the Austin Powers movies and So I Married an Axe Murderer.

Deadline is reporting that Imogen Poots has signed on to star in the film, and she’ll be playing “a career-driven 30-year-old surviving singleton in New York City” who decides to finally give in to pressure from her mom and try to settle down with a nice guy after “a series of fleeting flings.” Unfortunately, after she finally finds someone special, people who “who have recently been rude to her” start mysteriously dying, prompting her to wonder if this new beau is actually a murderer—and if that realization is worse than going back to being single again.

Deadline says that Timothy Simons from Veep has also been cast in Serial Dater ...

This week sees the release of the rather self-explanatory Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, a crude comedy with Zac Efron and Adam DeVine, but how well do you know other movie nuptials?

The dramatic use of actors playing multiple characters is a bold and rather theatrical device that has its ups and downs. It goes at least as far back as Captain Hook being played by the same actor who plays the Darling children's father in stage productions of Peter Pan, a technique largely adopted in film adaptations of the story, too (hello to Jason Isaacs).

It's used a lot in cinema too. Done well, it's impressive, but when it's bad, it's Jack & Jill. Whether used in comedy or drama or outright horror, there are countless examples of actors delivering terrific performances in more than one role at once, and that's before we even get past Cloud Atlas. Still, we've had a go at totting up 25 of the best.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away - Ok, on Tuesday, on your laptop - the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer revealed a host of new titbits to intrigue and torment us. As well as, among the new and familiar faces, our first proper look at Carrie Fisher returning as Princess Leia.

And yet Fisher isn't all doughnut-hairdos and gold bikinis. After the original trilogy was released, she became as well known for her incredible life off-screen - not least for her turbulent love life and struggles with bi-polar disorder and substance abuse - as her roles on-screen.

So as she turns 59 this week, what better time to look back at some of the stranger things you probably didn't know about her:

Ah, the 1990s. The decade that brought us The Lion King. Titanic. Quentin Tarantino. That wordless bathroom scene in Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet. Angelo Badalamenti's Twin Peaks. Duel of the Fates from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. In the Mood for Love.

It was a good 10 years for film music, no doubt.

But scratch the surface of 1991 through 1999 and there are tons of good scores ready to spring a surprise on your ears. Some were attached to sorely underrated movies, others were overshadowed by wildly successful ones, and some have simply been forgotten in the passage of time.

Here, in no particular order, are the top 25 underappreciated film soundtracks from the 1990s.

1. Chaplin - John Barry

Okay, let's start with a big one. Richard Attenborough. Robert Downey Jr. John Barry.

Phil Hartman proved to be one of Saturday Night Live's biggest stars during his eight season run (1986-1994) on the late-night sketch comedy show. And when Et first met the actor in 1989, just three years after his debut, it was clear just how much the show meant to him.

"It’s hard to put into words what an exciting thing it is to do this show," he told Et. "I've done commercials, I've done movies, I've performed on stage-- this is the best of all them rolled into one."

Hartman was recommended to SNL creator Lorne Michaels by fellow comedians such as Penny Marshall and cast members Laraine Newman and Jon Lovitz, who Hartman worked with early in his career. Lovitz told Et that Hartman initially turned the opportunity.

Another 25 unsung greats come under the spotlight, as we provide our pick of the underappreciated films of 1993...

What a year 1993 was. It saw the release of Star Fox on the Super Nintendo. Bill Clinton became president. Season three of Deep Space Nine premiered on Us television. UK politician Douglas Hurd visited Argentina. Cyndi Lauper released her album Hat Full Of Stars.

Aside from those earth shattering events, we'll probably remember 1993, in cinema terms, as the year Jurassic Park dominated the box office like an angry Tyrannosaurus. A true phenomenon, its profits doubled those of the second most watched film in 1993 cinemas, Mrs Doubtfire, and almost three times as much as the movie below that - the Harrison Ford thriller, The Fugitive.

But as ever, there was so much more to the 1993 movie landscape than dinosaurs and Robin Williams dressed as an old woman.

Some movies will always make me laugh, but let’s face it; the same movies might make others yawn. Comedy is tricky business, the hardest genre to pull off from script to screen. I’ve put together a list of 10 More underrated or dismissed comedies that deserve a first chance or even a second chance at recognition. Humor is subjective, but gives these flicks a chance and I promise you will enjoy yourself.

When Mike Myers‘ SNL skit, Wayne’s World, got spun off into a successful feature film in 1992, he kind of lucked himself into a transition from TV to movies. When he tried to anchor a film all by himself after that though, we got So I Married an Axe Murderer, and that wasn’t nearly as successful. Thankfully for him, that wasn’t the end of Myers’ story, because in 1997 he got another chance to star in a movie, and this time it was in a project that he wrote himself, a project that was tailored to play to all of his strengths as a performer. Now that "Breaking Dawn Part Two" has come and gone, the "Twilight" franchise has finally ended — at least until author Stephenie Meyer finds a way to bring it back. Meanwhile, the fandom is gearing up to join "Harry Potter" fans in its slow, err, fandom twilight.

But that’s no reason not to celebrate! Here’s a look back at some of the amazing things that "Twilight" and the "Twilight" fandom has given all of us over the last seven years — no matter how we feel about the books.

Gabriele Muccino, known predominantly for his 2006 feature The Pursuit of Happyness, returns with Playing for Keeps, a picture that has that early 1990′s feel to it, but not in a good way.

Unsurprisingly, writer Robbie Fox last wrote a screenplay in 1993 with So I Married an Axe Murderer, and it really shows. Sometimes films don’t look too promising from the outset, but then proceed to pleasantly surprise you. Unfortunately on this occasion, this one is as bad as it looks.

Gerard Butler plays George Dryer, a former professional footballer who had once played for Liverpool, before moving to the Mls where he suffered a career ending injury. Now washed up and in need of some quick cash, he attempts to turn his life around and begins by reconnecting with his son Lewis (Noah Lomax), and ex-wife Stacie (Jessica Biel), who, much to George’s displeasure, is soon to remarry.

The upcoming romantic comedy Playing for Keeps may not look particularly enticing, but keep in mind that it’s written by Robbie Fox, who gave us the clever script for So I Married an Axe Murderer about 20 years ago. Of course, he followed that with a story credit on the Pauly Shore vehicle In the Army Now (which was rewritten) before disappearing for two decades — I’m only aware of one spec script he sold in 1999 for a time travel-based divorce comedy titled Twice Upon a Time, which has never been produced. He’s also done some uncredited work through his career, including rewrites on My Girl, but for the most part his output is unknown and inconsistent. Still, I thought it would be fun to go back to the beginning of his career and watch 25-year-old short film titled The Great O’Grady. Fox directed the 30-minute film in addition to scripting, and...
