No! It is generally accepted by all fans that "Ninja Resurrection" and "Ninja Resurrection 2: Hell's Spawn" are NOT sequels to Ninja Scroll, but do share similarities. These similarities include the protagonists both being called Jubei and sharing similar appearances, the titles both bearing the word "Ninja," and the movies sharing a similar style. Although they can be easily mistaken as sequels to Ninja Scroll because of these, these similarities were most probably utilised by the creators to cash in on Ninja Scroll's success, but are in no way sequels to it.

Director Yoshiaki Kawajiri has stated on the special features of the 10th Anniversary Edition of Ninja Scroll that there is a planned sequel and is classed as in pre-production and will be released in 2005 as Ninja Scroll 2 in the west. Although 2005 has passed and still no sequel, Yoshiaki is most probably too busy with his upcoming title "Highlander: Vengeance" and will most likely start working on it at a much later date.

While we cross our fingers for the live-action adaptation to NINJA SCROLL (come on already!), news came in this weekend via AICN that an animated sequel might be coming sooner than we thought. "Appearing at the US East Coast's largest anime convention, Madhouse Studios co-founder and CCO Masao Maruyama stated that Ninja Scroll writer/director Yoshiaki Kawajiri is involved with a script for a sequel to the big-in-the-US bloody affair. Maruyama also mentioned that, like Kawajiri, he has script approval for the sequel. The 1993 anime-movie previously spawned a 13 episode TV series in 2003." In the original, a ninja-for-hire is forced into fighting an old nemesis who is bent on overthrowing the Japanese government. His nemesis is also the leader of a group of demons each with superhuman powers.

The old British BBFC 18 DVD is slightly censored, missing out three scenes. Two of these scenes feature the usage of shurikens - a martial arts weapon but the biggest difference is that the violation of Kagero has been cut out completely. These cuts were waived for the 10th Anniversary Special Edition of the movie.
