Jack Sonni, an American guitarist who played on Dire Straits’ mammoth 1985 album Brothers in Arms and was onstage with the band at Live Aid that year, has died at 68. The group shared the news on social media but did not give any details.
Born John Sonni on December 9, 1954, in Indiana, Pa, Sonni had been playing in the band Leisure Class in New York during the late 1970s when he met the Knopfler brothers, who’d had an international hit debut album and lead single with “Sultans of Swing.” He was asked to join the British group some years later, after Dave Knopfler had left, and playing guitar synthesizer on the track “The Man’s Too Strong” for Brothers in Arms, a worldwide smash that became one of the most popular albums of the ’80s.
Recorded all digitally as the CD era kicked in, the album’s nine tracks including the global behemoth “Money for Nothing.

The Beatles and The Rolling Stones remain two of the most influential classic rock bands. The Fab Four sent several songs to the top of the charts, and the Stones also scored several No. 1 hits. Though not mentioned in the same breath, Dire Straits accomplished something the Beatles and Stones never could.
(l-r) Beatles bassist Paul McCartney, Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger, Dire Straits guitarist Mark Knopfler, David Bowie, Mark King, and Bryan Adams | Dave Hogan/Hulton Archive/Getty Images Dire Straits released ‘Brothers in Arms’ in 1985
Dire Straits lead guitarist and singer Mark Knopfler was nearly 30 years old when the band released their self-titled debut album in 1978. The single “Sultans of Swing” performed well on both sides of the Atlantic, but it was nothing compared to what happened seven years later.
They made seven other albums in their career, but Dire Straits’ 1985 record Brothers in Arms was practically a greatest hits package.

When director Ben Affleck first approached William Goldenberg, his Oscar-winning go-to editor (“Argo”), to cut “Air,” the sports biopic about Nike’s revolutionary Air Jordan basketball shoe line, it was only a couple of months before shooting began. Yet Goldenberg had to wait a month before reading the script while Alex Convery finished his rewrite.
It was a tight turnaround, but it led to a fast and loose production that perfectly fit the film’s recreation of the scrappy, underdog culture at Oregon-based Nike in 1984, which was then on the verge of bankruptcy.
“It’s about taking risks and greatness,” Goldenberg told IndieWire. “It’s about a lot of things that people can relate to…breaking out of the mold. And what’s great about working on a film like this is I have to watch the movie a lot, and I never got tired of it.”

“Air” music supervisor Andrea von Foerster received a music playlist from Ben Affleck titled 1984. “It was literally my childhood,” she says of the song collection that featured classic ’80s hits including “Africa” by Toto, “Candy Girl” by New Edition and “Jump” by Van Halen.
The Affleck-helmed film, set in that same year, navigates Nike’s bid to land NBA player Michael Jordan and explores his groundbreaking sponsorship deal with the company.
That playlist from the director and star of the film was the springboard for the 23 needle drops and 18 score cues “Air” features. In curating the film’s needle drops, von Foerster wasn’t just using music to play against what was on screen — “the music was used as a showcase to tell a story,” she says.
Her goal was to use music from the year authentically, visually and musically where the lyrics would often match what was being seen on-screen.

Ben Affleck’s latest directorial effort, the Amazon theatrical release “Air,” has scored the Oscar-winning filmmaker some of the best reviews of his entire career and also probably earned Affleck a spot on many future Spotify Wrapped year-end playlists. The basketball drama about Nike’s efforts to sign Michael Jordan to a lucrative sneaker contract starts with the Dire Straits hit “Money for Nothing” and includes numerous ‘80s favorites throughout.
But Affleck doesn’t just include radio hits on the film’s soundtrack. As revealed by Film Music Reporter – and as known by anyone who has seen the movie thus far – “Air” also heavily features classic ‘80s film score in lieu of its own complete original score. Among some of the movie, scores included in “Air” are “Firestarter,” “Three O’Clock High,” “Risky Business,” “Beverly Hills Cop” and “Beverly Hills Cop II,” “Desperately Seeking Susan,” “Raw Deal,” and “Body Double.” Composer Paul Haslinger,...

Sonny Vaccaro knows his basketball. As played with reliable conviction by Matt Damon, the head scout in Nike’s dwindling hoops division has a keen eye for the next great players, attending high school all-star tournaments around the country and scanning for potential endorsements. But Sonny is also a gambler, and on the tail end of his trips he jets over to Las Vegas to lock in a couple parlays, betting on NBA money lines and spreads before throwing all his winnings away at the craps table a minute later. You get the sense this has become his beleaguered ritual. At some point those basketball instincts and his penchant to go for broke will align and finally pay off.
It’s a shrewd preview of what’s to come in Air, director Ben Affleck’s entertaining, workmanlike retelling of how Vaccaro helped an underdog shoe company sink a half-court heave...

You know the man, you know the legend, you know the shoe, but do you know the story of how the shoe, and the legend, became one? Air has got you. About six years ago, this film writer was walking along Oxford Street when he noticed the biggest queue outside a shop he’d ever seen. Hundreds of people – teenagers and adults alike – standing patiently for the doors to fly open and to be let inside to be some of the first to grab a new collector’s item. That item was a new pair of Air Jordans. Limited to one per customer, fans were trying to persuade strangers to join the queue and get them a second pair for a reward, just so they had a spare. Or, of course, to resell them. The point is, Air Jordans, even to this very day, are such a must-have in people...

Rock star excess hit its peak in the 1980s. It went beyond the bad behavior of throwing televisions out of hotel rooms, or the decadent pleasures of mud sharks and Mandys. The Beatles, who were the biggest band to come out of the rock and roll era, set standards for excess, beating Elvis’s Pink Cadillac tour when they thought about buying their own Greek island. Their success was ensured by their producer, George Martin, who allowed the band to exceed the limits of the Emi studios they created music in. Gracie Otto’s documentary Under the Volcano is the story of how Martin’s post-Beatle career enjoyed greater heights by finding an entirely new level of indulgence. For the second time in his career, the “fifth Beatle” exceeded all expectations about how to produce a sound.
Martin bought an island in a tropical paradise, and turned it into a sonic Shangri-La.

In putting together this year’s Melbourne International Film Festival (Miff), director Al Cossar was “hoping for the best and planning for utter chaos”.
Miff’s 69th edition had always been devised as a hybrid model, but originally films were to run in cinemas for the first half of the festival and online for the second.
With Melbourne just emerging from its fifth lockdown, the festival announced today it will now bring forward the online program to run for the full duration of the festival, August 5-22, while in-cinema screenings will now commence later, on August 12.
There is the hope by that date, the capacity restrictions that Victorian cinemas are facing (currently capped at 100 per theatre) may have loosened. All ticket holders who have already purchased tickets to events will be contacted directly.

Imagine a world in which technology has become so advanced the wealthy all have self-driving cars, 3D-printed food, wrist holograms with which to speak to each other from afar and the option of living posthumously in a digital afterlife.
That kind of future may feel like sheer fantasy even as some of it feels like it’s just around the corner. It’s also the world Greg Daniels (“The Office”) created with his Amazon Prime series “Upload,” debuting May 1. Tasked with making that technology seem real for both the world within the show as well as for its virtual afterlife, was the team at FuseFX.
