Last September, the folks at Arrow Video gave the 2009 Friday the 13th a 4K release – and now they’re set to give the same treatment to two earlier entries in the franchise, 1993’s Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday and 2001’s Jason X! Arrow Video will be releasing both of those films on 4K Ultra HD on May 20th, and copies are already available for pre-order on their website. Jason Goes to Hell can be pre-ordered at This Link and Jason X can be pre-ordered Here.
Directed by Adam Marcus, who worked on the script with Dean Lorey and Jay Huguely, Jason Goes to Hell has the following description: After dying, coming back, taking Manhattan and dying again, Jason Voorhees is now back as a body snatcher in Jason Goes to Hell, an impossibly fun slice of campy supernatural slasher action! Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday was a bonkers sequel that took the simple masked slasher movie franchise to new heights (or new depths?). The early 90s film that attempted to end the franchise was hated by critics and very divisive with fans. However, now you can get the full story of what the creative people were thinking as director Adam Marcus recalls being a bright-eyed, fresh-faced film student who was given the keys to the kingdom and didn’t exactly know what to do with the newly purchased property from New Line Cinema. The trailer for Hearts of Darkness: The Making of The Final Friday is now here.
Marcus has spoken directly with fans as he announced that the documentary is “almost 2 hours long.” The Blu-ray edition will feature “another 2 hours of goodness that we could not fit in a theatrical feature film! Oh yeah! We’ve got...

In Sean Cunningham's 1980 slasher "Friday the 13th," Jason Voorhees is little more than the subject of a notorious ghost story. Camp counselors at Camp Crystal Lake, New Jersey, loved to scare young campers by telling them the very true story of the developmentally disadvantaged who wandered off and drowned in the lake decades earlier. It seems that the counselors who were tasked with caring for Jason were too busy copulating to notice he was in danger. Years later, however, counselors are suddenly being systematically murdered by an unseen assailant. Is it Jason returned from the grave, murdering counselors as revenge?
In the first "Friday," it was revealed that Pamela Voorhees (Betsy Palmer), Jason's mother, had snapped and was killing counselors in honor of her dead son. In "Friday the 13th Part 2," however, it was revealed that Jason had been alive all along, and had grown to adulthood living in the woods,...

“Horror in the 90s sucked!” It’s a phrase we have all heard. We may have even uttered it. While the 70s was a time for grimy experimentation that set the standards for decades to come, and the 80s were the heyday of franchise slashers, the 90s represented something completely different for horror fans. The slasher giants like Halloween and Friday the 13th were petering out and no new horror icons had risen to take their places. In the last few years of the decade, the slasher re-emerged via Scream and gave rise to the more clever, self-referencial horror cycle that carried us into the new millennium, but what about the years before that? Was horror truly the barren wasteland that so often gets moaned about?
No! No, it was not.
The 90s might have seen the deaths of Freddy, Jason and Michael, but it also saw the births of...

When Friday the 13th (1980) was first released into theaters, there was not a lot of hope for a sustained franchise. After all, they knock off most of the characters and the villain out of the gate. Yet in the last days of filming, Jason Voorhees made his first appearance, and Friday the 13th became a twelve-film phenomenon. With December 13th falling on a Friday, it’s a perfect time to revisit the fun franchise.
12. Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning (1985)
It’s almost unfair to rank this movie this low. However, Friday the 13th Part V is a mess from beginning to end. After Corey Feldman’s cameo, it takes more than twenty-five minutes for Jason to return to the screen. Even then, it’s not the Voorhees we’ve come to love. The result was so disastrous, that producers decided to bring Jason back from the dead immediately.

Jason Goes To Hell was my entryway into the Friday the 13th franchise. A junior in high school, I’d recently fallen in love with Scream and overcome my childhood fear of slasher killers. My boyfriend suggested we watch one of his favorites: the 9th and purportedly “final” installment in the storied franchise. At the time I was in full agreement with Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and had no interest in a formulaic film. “What’s the point,” I quoted, “they’re all the same.” But he assured me this one was special.
I begrudgingly pushed play and was hooked from the opening scene. While opinions vary wildly about Jason Goes to Hell, there’s no doubt director Adam Marcus is swinging for the fences. The plot is joyfully bananas and ends in a smorgasbord of murderous possession, decaying bodies, magic books, and minions from hell. But amidst the B-movie lunacy,...

In the early-to-mid eighties, Jason Voorhees dominated the horror box office. The masked slasher went from jump scare at the end of a movie to a pop culture icon in impressive fashion; enraging conservative parents while delighting teenagers who loved seeing him stalk and kill other teenagers on the big screen. Of the first four films, three of them made over $30 million at the U.S. box office, an impressive feat for the time. However, starting around 1985, with the much-criticized Friday the 13th: A New Beginning the series’ grosses started dwindling. Yes, they were still making money for studio Paramount thanks to their low budgets, but the air was seemingly coming out of the franchise the longer it went along. The low point, in several ways, was the release of Jason Takes Manhattan, a movie where the fans finally had to admit Jason’s machete blade had become quite dull.

Once upon a time, the most popular monsters of filmdom were linked to certain actors. Though other individuals would play these roles over time, ask any movie buff to name the performers best known for portraying Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy and the Wolf Man, and they'll fire back with, respectively, Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, Karloff again, and Lon Chaney Jr. But while these roles were spoken for in the public's consciousness, one of these actors was famous, at least among seriously committed horror fans, for having played all four of Universal's marquee monsters -- and that actor was Chaney Jr.

Based on the teases in the third Terrifier movie, Terrifier 4 seems like it could be the most exciting entry in the franchise yet. However, Terrifier 4 will have to avoid a mistake that a Friday the 13th sequel made. Damian Leone's Terrifier 3 was the most intense Terrifier movie yet. It followed both Art the Clown and Vicky, both fully possessed by demons, with the former dressing up as Santa Claus to go on his most vicious killing spree yet.
Terrifier 3 raised the stakes quite substantially compared to the previous two films. This is common for horror movie franchises. However, sometimes when horror movie series attempt to raise the stakes and do something bold, it doesn't work out. This was the case with the ninth film in the Friday the 13th franchise, titled Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday. Since there is a good chance the upcoming Terrifier 4 will feature Hell,...

The Friday the 13thfranchise has an interesting timeline thanks to the fictional history of its main killer, Jason Voorhees, and his apparent immortality. The story of the Friday the 13th movies chronologically stretches from the 1950s to 25th century, with a reboot and a crossover movie making things even more complicated. Watching the Friday the 13th movies in order isn't a difficult task, though the timeline of events can be confusing as, while all the movies do revolve around the titular day, not all of them give a year for when the events take place.
The chronological order of the Friday the 13th movies starts off simple enough, as most of the first three sequels take place over one continuous stretch of time. However, things start to become more difficult to follow after the first of Jason's on screen deaths, which prompts a brief hiatus for the character, a resurrection...

Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday may be one of the most divisive movies in the Friday the 13th franchise, but I’m sure fans would jump at the chance to own the film on 4K Ultra HD. There have been rumblings that Arrow Video might be working on a 4K release of the sequel, which director Adam Marcus has confirmed.
“I just supervised the 4K restoration, Color timing and clean up with cinematographer William Dill,” Marcus revealed on X. “It’s the uncut version and it’s never looked better.” It’s not clear when Jason Goes to Hell might be released, but I’d imagine we’ll hear a more official announcement before too long. Arrow Video released a 4K version of the Friday the 13th remake just last month.

Throughout the Friday the 13th series, many actors have played the iconic killer, Jason Voorhees, some better than others. Jason Voorhees cycled through looks and costumes across the years, as well as actors, many of whom only played the character once. The films sometimes brought in different actors in each movie to stand in for Jason when he wasn't wholly on screen, but each movie generally has one or, in some cases, two actors associated with the role. Many shots of the killer remain faceless, mirroring Jason's menacing yet sneaky killing style.
Jason Voorhees typically wears a hockey mask when his face is shown, which has become synonymous with the killer. The character design allowed him to be played solely by stuntmen since throughout the Friday the 13th franchise, Jason kills but doesn't speak. The Friday the 13th franchise started as a way to cash in on the success of Halloween, and several Jason movies have matched up to the John Carpenter classic in terms of success. Director Sean S. Cunningham took an ad out in Variety calling it "The Most Terrifying Film Ever Made," all before the movie even had a plot, according to Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday The 13th. Other films had the same goal of matching up a camp setting or day on the calendar to a slasher killer, but they never had the pure effect of Friday the 13th.
With writing that feels organic to the characters and the time period, Friday the 13th set a precedent that 11 follow-up movies have tried to match or top. These movies brought more victims to Crystal Lake for Jason Vorhees to dispatch. Soon, the Jason movies took him away from the lake setting,...

“Let’s make an R-rated cartoon about an R-rated cartoon coming out” was the original concept pitched when Matt Stone and Trey Parker were developing their classic animated musical opus, South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut. Twenty-five years later, it remains a brilliantly meta idea. But before Canada-blaming glory, South Park’s road to the silver screen was paved with many blockades, mainly from within their parent company of Viacom, which owned both Comedy Central and Paramount Pictures, and their biggest formidable foe, the then-named Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).
And as if it wasn’t ironic enough, the biggest bone of contention was for the creators’ use of vulgarities within an anti-censorship-centric movie. In typical Matt and Trey fashion, whatever adversary they faced, they rebelled with nastier pushback against. And in the long run, this made for a more memorable film. Here’s a look back at the...

Producer/directed Sean Cunningham has admitted multiple times that, when making his seminal slasher movie "Friday the 13th," he was directly hoping to ape the success of John Carpenter's "Halloween." The latter, released in 1978, made $70 million on a tiny budget of about $350,000. Cunningham decided to up the budget of "Friday" to a whopping $550,000, and he, miraculously, achieved his goal; "Friday the 13th" made almost $60 million.

Tenney also took to his Facebook account to confirm that a Blu-ray release for the 1995 film Witchboard III: The Possession is caught in the same sad situation. In fact, it’s even sadder that a Blu-ray release of Witchboard III has been postponed indefinitely, because this would have been the first time the movie was ever released on Blu-ray. This one would have featured an on-camera interview with lead actress Elizabeth Lambert, who was credited on the film as Locky Lambert. These Blu-rays were meant to be part of a Witchboard Blu-ray bundle, much like the Night of the Demons Blu-ray bundle that was released by Scream Factory a while back. Hopefully we’ll get to see this release happen someday… but for now, we can only wait and hope.

The copyright lawsuit between original Friday the 13th director / producer Sean S. Cunningham and screenwriter Victor Miller, a case that dragged on for years, finally ended with Miller being awarded the copyright to the first movie within the United States. Fans were hoping that meant the path was clear for a new Friday the 13th film to go into production soon – but that’s not happening. During an appearance at the Texas Frightmare Weekend convention, Cunningham told fans we shouldn’t expect to see a new Friday the 13th movie for at least three more years.
Back in the glory days, a.k.a. the ’80s, we were getting new Friday the 13th movie from Paramount on a yearly basis, with 1983 and 1987 being the only years without a new F13 arriving on the screen. But things changed when the ’90s arrived. We only got one new movie, from New Line Cinema,...

Horror, Inc. announces that they are planning a new Jason Universe within the Friday the 13th franchise. This new universe is said to include entertainment, games, immersive experiences, and merchandise. At the time of writing, no further details are known about any aspect of this universe.
The Friday the 13th franchise has received a new update. The multimedia series began with the 1980 movie of the same name, which followed the doomed counselors working to rehabilitate the closed Camp Crystal Lake and has since expanded to include 12 movies, an in-name-only television show about cursed antiques, several video games, comics, and more, with the majority of the properties featuring the hockey-masked serial killer Jason Voorhees. The most recently announced installment in the franchise is a planned Peacock prequel series with A24 and Bryan Fuller, though the showrunner recently departed the project.

Not to be confused with the 1986 Gary Paulsen novel that was on your fifth-grade reading list, Adam Green's 2007 slasher "Hatchet" was intended to be an homage to the plentiful stalk-and-kill movies from the 1980s. The first "Hatchet" takes place deep in the swamps of Louisana where feckless city-dwellers get lost while taking a swamp tour. They trade stories of Victor Crowley, a local kid with facial differences who, years ago, was trapped in a burning house set ablaze by prankster teens. Crowley was accidentally killed by his father when he recklessly used a hatchet to free him from the fire. Victor's spirit is now said to haunt the swamp and murder interlopers. Of course, Victor will appear to start the predicted murders.
Victor Crowley was played by stuntman Kane Hodder, perhaps best known for playing the masked killer Jason Voorhees in "Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood,...

A documentary covering the 1993 Friday the 13th sequel Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (Watch It Here – OWN It Here) has been in the works for quite a while, and about eight months ago Jason Goes to Hell director Adam Marcus took to social media to give a promising update on its progress, saying that it was about to go through the color timing and sound mixing stages of post-production. It has been longer than expected, but now Marcus has given another update, letting fans know that the color timing and sound mixing are finally happening this month.
Before the week began, Marcus wrote, “The doc just went through legal and has been approved. Which means we are officially Locked! This means the film is completed from an editing stage and we’ve taken all the steps to ensure that the film meets all the standards to be released.

As Easter Sunday approaches this weekend, we thought we’d “die” your eggs a little a differently. That is, we’re on the great hidden treasure hunt for some of the most colorful and delicious horror movie Easter eggs found in some of our favorite titles. But here’s the thing. We aren’t talking about obscure cameos from people that are hard to miss, or even secretive foreshadowing within a single movie, a la the entire Final Destination franchise. Nor are we talking about mere verbal references to other horror movies. Rather, we’re interested in visual crossover clues found one horror movie that pay homage to another, found tucked away in the background or even hidden in plain sight. You see the distinction. Good. Hopefully you haven’t already seen what’s to follow. Happy holiday y’all, here’s our Top 10 Favorite Crossover Horror Movie Easter Eggs!

A24's Crystal Lake prequel will finally revive the Friday the 13th franchise after a long hiatus due to legal issues. Crystal Lake will provide a deeper look into the origins of iconic characters like Pamela Voorhees and young Jason. Targeting a 2025 release on Friday, June 13th could increase interest in the show and connect with new horror fans.
Friday the 13th is set to return in the form of a prequel show titled Crystal Lake, and the series has the perfect release date to target. It has now been 15 years since a Friday the 13th movie released, with the 2009 film serving as a reboot that put a fresh spin on the first four movies in the franchise. Any movie continuation of the Friday the 13th franchise hasn't come to fruition since 2009 due to confusing studio rights and lawsuits over the original movie's screenplay and Jason Voorhees character ownership. Presented by Lisa Frankenstein, 1989 Week is dialing the clock back to the crossroads year for the genre with a full week of features that dig six feet under into the year. Today, Alex Divincenzo revisits the great slasher slump of 1989.
While horror fans often look back on the ’80s with a nostalgic glow, 1989 was not what most would consider a strong year for the genre — particularly when compared to the embarrassment of riches spawned by the rest of the decade. Not even Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, and Freddy Krueger were safe from the slasher slump.
Each franchise had its ups and downs across a cumulative 17 movies in the ’80s, but the decade came to a close with low points — creatively and financially — in all three sagas: Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child, and Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers.

Bloody Disgusting’s exclusive preview of Trick or Treat Studios’ Halloween 2024 offerings rolls on with the return of Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger to the Halloween season!
This Halloween season, Trick or Treat Studios will be releasing brand new Halloween masks based on Jason Goes to Hell and the original A Nightmare on Elm Street!
What’s particularly cool here is that the Freddy Krueger mask looks like a fresh take on the classic Don Post Freddy mask from the 1980s, the first Freddy mask I personally ever owned!
As for the Jason Voorhees mask, it’s similarly a new update on a mask released by Illusive Concepts back in the 1990s. It captures the slasher icon’s gnarly look from 1993 sequel Jason Goes to Hell. The classic hockey mask is gruesomely fused into Jason’s deformed head.
These are both releasing in time for Halloween 2024. Preview the masks below.

Christmas is coming and we’re painting the snow red on Screambox.
There are an absurd amount of presents under our tree, including the “Frankenstein”-inspired Santastein, the nasty Secret Santa hailing from the director of Jason Goes to Hell, and the awesomely creepy anthology Night of the Missing.
But we also have our fair share of holiday classics, including Rare Exports, Christmas Evil, Day of the Beast, Deep Red, and even Silent Night, Deadly Night 2.
However, the star at the top of the tree is Bob Clark‘s slasher masterpiece Black Christmas, which is now streaming on Screambox courtesy of Shout! Factory.

Tis the season to be scary and Screambox has got you covered with a trio of brand-spanking-new Christmas-themed horror movies that go perfectly with cookies and milk in front of a warm fire.
Now streaming on Screambox from the director of Jason Goes to Hell is Secret Santa and the awesomely creepy anthology Night of the Missing.
That’s not all! Just in time for Christmas break, Santastein will make the long winter’s nights anything but silent on Dec. 19.
Since Black Christmas, holiday films have been a refreshing sub-genre within horror. These films offer a much-needed contrast to the “all is well” narrative that is so often depicted in seasonal films. The angst and anxiety of holiday horror offer a cathartic release because for many the holidays are not perfect, and we don’t see ourselves in the yuletide rom-coms.

2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the events of the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the 20th anniversary of the release of the remake, and also the tenth anniversary of an entry in the franchise that has less fans than those two just mentioned: Texas Chainsaw 3D (watch it Here). Recently, our friends at Bloody Disgusting sat down for an interview with one of the film’s writers, Adam Marcus, and during their chat Marcus revealed that the movie lost its cannibalism due to the box office failure of The Midnight Meat Train and lost a couple massacres due to the lower-than-expected budget.
Directed by John Luessenhop and sporting a story credited to Stephen Susco, Adam Marcus, and Debra Sullivan, and a screenplay by Marcus, Sullivan, and Kirsten Elms, Texas Chainsaw 3D has the following synopsis: Decades ago, residents of Newt, Texas, long suspected that the Sawyer family was responsible for the disappearances of many people.

A makeup effect from Jason Goes to Hell made a surprise cameo in director Adam Marcus' 2018 movie Secret Santa. The director still had old makeup from the Friday the 13th movie and decided to reuse it to create a $10,000 effect for Michael Rady's death scene in Secret Santa. Marcus noted Rady's resemblance to his brother Kipp Marcus, who played Officer Randy Parker in Jason Goes to Hell.
It has been revealed that a makeup effect from Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday made a surprise reappearance decades later. The 1993 movie, which was directed by Adam Marcus, was the ninth entry in the Friday the 13th slasher franchise. It featured the iconic killer Jason Voorhees revealing the heretofore unseen power of transferring his soul into new bodies and continuing his Crystal Lake rampage anew while possessing various people across town as he pursues his last remaining family members...

The mythology for the long-running "Friday the 13th" film series has been notoriously shabby and amorphous. At the end of Sean Cunningham's 1980 original slasher, it was revealed that Pamela Voorhees (Betsy Palmer) had witnessed her developmentally disabled son Jason drown in Crystal Lake years earlier, largely thanks to the neglect of the boy's randy, sex-distracted counselors. Pamela set about getting madness-inspired spiritual revenge by murdering any new counselors who deigned to have sex at Camp Crystal Lake. Luckily, Pamela was killed before she could commit any more murders than she already did.
In Steve Miner's "Friday the 13th Part 2," however, it was revealed that Jason (Steve Daskewisz and Warrington Gillette) was still alive, living in the woods for decades, presumably unbeknownst to his mother. But Jason, it is revealed, knew his mother was killing people and witnessed the events of the first "Friday." Why, one will immediately ask,...

Director Adam Marcus faced intense backlash over his film Jason Goes to Hell, with fans accusing him of ruining their childhood and wishing him harm. Fans who disliked the movie are passionate and knives-out from the get-go, with some even going as far as casual bullying on social media. The film's poor reception was due to clumsy writing, lackluster acting, and a perceived lack of originality on the director's part. It is considered one of the worst in the franchise.

In case you missed it earlier this week… Tis the season to be scary, as Bloody Disgusting announces the acquisition of three new holiday horror titles for the Screambox streaming service – Secret Santa, Night of the Missing, and Santastein will make the long winter’s nights anything but silent!
We’re thrilled to be releasing these films because they offer something for everyone; whether you want to laugh, scream or just have fun, you can find it on Screambox!
