This 1992 film has been fully restored and re-mastered and this restored version was "re-premiered" on 28th November 2016 at the same cinema in Auckland, New Zealand that had staged the original premiere - The Civic.
The film was partially inspired by Hollywood melodramas of the 1930s and 1940s according to the New Zealand Film Commission.
The name of the fictional 19th-century seaport town and the name of its fictitious Commonwealth nation state where it was located were "Hope'' and ''New Britannia" respectively.
'Desperate Remedies' is also the title of the first published novel of 19th century English novelist Thomas Hardy which was first published in 1871.
The film won the award for Best Costume Design at the 1993 Catalonian International Film Festival in Catalonia, Spain.
