Before Matthew McConaughey became alright, alright and stole scenes in Dazed and Confused, his days started a little less glamorous. Picture this: a young McConaughey, headlamp on, raking sand traps at the crack of dawn. His first real job? Not acting — but taming the golf greens of Oak Forest Country Club in Longview, Texas.
“We had 77 sand traps,” The actor recalled in an interview. His morning routine started at 3:30 a.m., with the first golfers teeing off at 6:45. “I had to have those traps raked by 7:30,” he explained. It wasn’t just a typical raking gig, though. Oh no, there was a quirky twist. Enter the armadillos.
The club’s greenskeeper had a unique request. On top of raking traps, McConaughey had a side mission: armadillo hunter. Those little critters were wreaking havoc on the greens,...

When Gregg Araki last spoke with Slant in 2011, he remarked, “A pet peeve of mine is when filmmakers keep making the same movie over and over without any kind of progression.” As Araki prepares to shoot another film centered around youth culture and sexuality, I Want Your Sex, he continues to bring a fresh perspective to his pet themes. That evolution was evident even within his Teen Apocalypse Trilogy, the series of movies that helped establish his place at the vanguard of the loosely organized New Queer Cinema of the 1990s.
As Araki revealed in a recent conversation with us, the three films weren’t originally mapped out as a trilogy. When the lo-fi charms of his 1993’s Totally F***ed Up—made on a shoestring budget with few additional crew members—struck a chord with festival audiences, new creative possibilities were opened up to the scrappy filmmaker. Sandra Bullock and Matthew McConaughey might have had a fiery on-screen romance, but off-screen, she seemed to have a crystal ball hidden somewhere. Almost three decades ago, Bullock made a prediction about McConaughey that feels eerily spot-on today. While many would argue McConaughey’s rise to fame was inevitable, Bullock seemed to know something the rest of us didn’t.

As the cannabis industry continues to evolve, new cannabinoids are making their way into the spotlight, with Hhc (hexahydrocannabinol) emerging as one of the most intriguing. At the same time, the relationship between the entertainment industry and cannabis has become increasingly visible, with many movie stars openly embracing cannabis culture. This blog will explore the growing connection between Hhc vape products and movie stars, the broader relationship between cannabis and the film industry, and why Hhc might just be the next big thing for Hollywood’s elite.
What is Hhc?
Hhc, or hexahydrocannabinol, is a relatively new cannabinoid that is gaining attention for its unique properties. It is a hydrogenated form of Thc (tetrahydrocannabinol), the primary psychoactive compound found in cannabis. “It really begins with the footage,” editor Varun Viswanath says.
While that’s the norm for any editor, Viswanath, who is nominated for an Emmy alongside fellow editor Patrick Tuck for FX’s “Reservation Dogs,” has a secret weapon in the cutting room: co-creators and showrunners Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi.
Not only do they do long takes, but they do also resets. “We get to hear what they’re saying to the actors, and it’s an extra tool to get into their heads and understand their preferences,” Viswanath says. Viswanath and Tuck joined forces to collaborate on cutting the series finale, “Dig.”
In the episode, the town comes together to honor medicine man Fixico (Richard Ray Whitman) after his death. While the theme of community anchors the entire series, it is key to this episode. The central characters all reach different resolutions: Elora (Devery Jacobs) is heading off...

Richard Linklater‘s filmography is nothing if not varied, having made searing dramas to stoner comedies, from play adaptations to rock n roll movies, and even a rotoscope animated film or two. Most significantly he took experimental chances on several films, which are among the most remarkable works in the past two decades.
One of those experiments, the trilogy of “Before” films with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy brought Linklater his first two Academy Award nominations for Best Screenplay, and he was nominated for three more Oscars for 2014’s “Boyhood” — for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay. Also for “Boyhood,” Linklater won his first two Golden Globe Awards (for Best Film Drama and Best Director) and was nominated for a third for his screenplay.
Linklater has always got some project in some form of production, and is currently working on the upcoming “Merrily We Roll Along,” which will be shot over the next 20 years.

If ever a soundtrack helped boost a movie’s legacy, it’s that of Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused, a non-stop party album that encapsulated not just the era in which the movie is set but the essence of the film. But despite there being around 30 songs in Dazed and Confused, Linklater had trouble securing rights to one Led Zeppelin track, leading to him to say he would be boycotting singer Robert Plant for life.
Interestingly, when coming up with the perfect Led Zeppelin song to use, Linklater didn’t want “Dazed and Confused” itself but rather “Rock and Roll.” As he recounted in his “Dazed by Days” journal, in the spring of 1993, Linklater got permission from Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page after sending him a five-minute video of non-stop begging. But in July, singer Robert Plant denied the use of any Zeppelin tunes. As Linklater wrote, “We’re out of time,...

Hits from the weekend
Streaming movies and shows made up the majority of the top five titles this past weekend, based on traffic to their IMDb pages. That’s thanks to a trio of Netflix titles and the new Star Wars series, “The Acolyte.” In theaters, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s fourth installment in the Bad Boys franchise delivered Hollywood a much-needed box office win, while ‘The Watchers’—the mystery-horror film starring Dakota Fanning—drew enough interest to land in the top 10.
By the time ‘Hit Man’ dropped on Netflix, movie fans were probably well aware of who Glen Powell was, but the popularity of the comedic action film brought more IMDb users’ attention to co-star Adria Arjona and director Richard Linklater. If Arjona looked familiar to viewers, it’s likely from several supporting roles in other streaming hits like “Good Omens,” “Andor,” and ‘6 Underground’ with Ryan Reynolds.
It’s not often that directors crack the top five (or even top 10) names on IMDb, but viewers were clearly interested to know more about Richard Linklater, the versatile and irreverent director of indie films like ‘Slacker’ and ‘Dazed and Confused,’ who also found mainstream recognition with ‘School of Rock.’
Also big on Netflix were the French killer shark movie ‘Under Paris’ and the Benedict Cumberbatch miniseries “Eric,” which released all six episodes two weeks ago. Elsewhere in streaming, “The Acolyte” has had no trouble finding its audience on Disney+. According to Disney, the show drew 4.8 million viewers on its first day, making it the streamer’s biggest hit of 2024 to date. Amandla Stenberg and Dafne Keen were in the top five names on IMDb, and both will likely remain popular through the show’s first season, which ends on July 16.
What’s in store for the coming week?
Expect next weekend to be all about “The Boys,” the raunchy comic book adaptation from showrunner Eric Kripke. The first three episodes of Season 4 arrive Thursday (6/13) on Prime Video, with new episodes dropping weekly. Returning cast members Karl Urban, Antony Starr, and Erin Moriarty will likely climb IMDb’s STARmeter, but a few new supes on the scene could put some breakouts in the spotlight, such as Valorie Curry (playing Firecracker) or Susan Heyward (as Sister Sage).
In theaters, Disney and Pixar’s animated ‘Inside Out 2’ is a shoo-in to win next weekend’s box office, though it may not have the same interest on IMDb as the streaming releases. The original voice cast of emotions are returning, but it’s more likely one of the newcomers will spike in popularity, like Maya Hawke (“Stranger Things”) as Anxiety, Ayo Edibiri (“The Bear”) as Envy, or Paul Walter Houser (‘I, Tonya,’ ‘Richard Jewell’) as Embarrassment.

As of this writing, a Richard Linklater film holds the number one spot on Netflix's Top 10 chart. Considering the genre-spanning nature of the writer/director's versatile career, this outcome wasn't necessarily a given, but according to FlixPatrol, a site that tracks the popularity of titles on streaming services, "Hit Man" debuted this past Friday and has been number one in the U.S. every day since.
Linklater might be the best director in the country at making pure hang-out movies. He excels at crafting compelling characters, dropping them into easy-going situations, and giving the audience the experience of spending a couple of hours with them as they amble through international cities (the "Before" trilogy), experience the ups and downs of growing up ("Boyhood"), make their way through the last day of school ("Dazed and Confused"), or get to know their college baseball teammates ("Everybody Wants Some!!"). Richard Linklater is opening up about the hurdles to producing his latest movie, “Hit Man,” saying that studios initially “really didn’t want to make the film.”
In a new interview with the BBC, the celebrated director of “Dazed and Confused” and the “Before” trilogy said that he and Glen Powell — who stars in the film and co-wrote the script — worked on the film “very independently.”
“Glen and I wrote it speculatively and we didn’t get paid anything, we just tried to get the film made,” he told the BBC. “We really felt we were onto something, we felt we had written a film noir, a crime film that’s also a screwball comedy about a couple that you’re rooting to be together, but I think they wanted it to be just one thing.”

Taking its name from the 1934 ballad written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, the film follows Hart as he attempts to save face while celebrating his former partner Rodgers’ great success on the night of his musical Oklahoma!‘s Broadway opening. While it’s believed that this will end up being Linklater’s next film, that’s not entirely clear at present.
We’re told that Robert Kaplow — co-writer of Linklater’s 2008 film Me and Orson Welles — penned the script for Blue Moon and that Linklater will produce the project alongside his manager John Sloss.

Richard Linklater’s decade-spanning masterwork Boyhood introduced the world to the concept of a Beatles “Black Album.” In that 2014 film, Ethan Hawke’s Mason Evans Sr. presents a personally curated album of the rock band’s solo tracks to his son on the child’s 15th birthday. Mason Sr. explains the impossibility of picking a favorite Beatle because the beauty of their artistry lies in their balance. The curatorial act of synergizing the sensational, the spiritual, the sensual, and the sentimental elevates them all.
The same logic that applies to the Fab Four also works as a description for Linklater himself. Oh, Canada debuting this week on the Croisette is high time to see lesser-seen Schrader on the Criterion Channel, who’ll debut an 11-title series including the likes of Touch, The Canyons, and Patty Hearst, while Old Boyfriends (written with his brother Leonard) and his own “Adventures in Moviegoing” are also programmed. Five films by Jean Grémillon, a rather underappreciated figure of French cinema, will be showing
Series-wise, there’s an appreciation of the synth soundtrack stretching all the way back to 1956’s Forbidden Planet while, naturally, finding its glut of titles in the ’70s and ’80s––Argento and Carpenter, obviously, but also Tarkovsky and Peter Weir. A Prince and restorations of films by Bob Odenkirk, Obayashi, John Greyson, and Jacques Rivette (whose Duelle is a masterpiece of the highest order) make streaming debuts. I Am Cuba, Girlfight, The Royal Tenenbaums, and Dazed and Confused are June’s Criterion Editions.

Quentin Tarantino is undoubtedly one of the finest filmmakers of our time. But as much as he is a passionate filmmaker, he is also a passionate cinephile: having absorbed the best that contemporary cinema has to offer since childhood, Tarantino bases his work on the most recognizable tropes and directorial styles, creating a refined pop culture mishmash. And as a huge film buff, Tarantino shared a list of the 20 films he 'admires the most' in a conversation with Sky Movies in 2009.
20 Must-Watch Movies According to Tarantino
Before we get to the list itself, it's important to note that it's not in order of importance, but in alphabetical order. Except for the number one, because for Tarantino it is 'favorite movie that has come out in the last 17 years.' Besides, as he pointed out, this is one of the few movies he would personally dream of directing.

Chris Pine. who played Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984, told Business Insider that he was “stunned” when he learned Wonder Woman 3 had been axed. “I’m stunned that they said no to a billion-dollar franchise and decided to pivot elsewhere,” Pine said “I don’t know what the reasoning was behind that; it’s above my pay grade, but Wonder Woman is an incredible character; Patty is such a thoughtful director.”
The actor had no expectations that he would have been involved in the third movie. “Me. No. Homie is dead. Steve is gonzo,” he said. “It would be ridiculous to try to bring me back.” Trevor was killed off in the first Wonder Woman...

This holiday season is one where the offspring of iconic Hollywood families come together, apparently.
“Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point,” which is set to debut in the Director’s Fortnight at Cannes, stars Francesca Scorsese and Sawyer Spielberg, two film stars in their own rite who hail from respective auteurs Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg.
Decade-plus indie staple Michael Cera leads the latest feature directed by Tyler Taormina; Cera also produces the ensemble family dramedy that marks Taormina’s follow-up to his 2019 coming-of-age comedy “Ham on Rye.”
Set during one Christmas Eve, a family gathers for what could be the last holiday in their ancestral home. Before he made the disastrous Batman & Robin, Joel Schumacher helmed the summer blockbuster film A Time to Kill starring Matthew McConaughey. The Interstellar actor was still a newcomer at the time, only having the cult film Dazed and Confused popularly in his portfolio. He was cast in the role after Schumacher pulled some strings, but two other famous stars were rejected before McConaughey’s casting.

Kevin Costner was a contender for the role and a much older actor than McConaughey. Costner was rejected because the film needed someone younger to play the up-and-coming lawyer. Interestingly, McConaughey is rumored to appear as the next big star in the Yellowstone franchise after Costner.

Opening soon in a theater near you are “Run Lola Run,” “Interstellar,” “Hereditary,” “Split,” and “Spirited Away.” They join fellow comeback kids “Oldboy,” “Stop Making Sense,” “Coraline,” “Amelié,” and Pixar’s pandemic-era films making their theatrical returns.
Last year’s strikes can take credit for some of this nostalgia: With distributors forced to delay films, theaters are desperate for product. However, desperation is not the only mother of this invention. A24, Neon, and other specialty distributors are treating re-releases as a way to reach younger audiences.
Last year, Neon re-released Park Chan-wook’s 2003 film “Oldboy” to $2.1 million worldwide. At a CinemaCon panel April 8, Neon distribution president Elissa Federoff credited its success to a young audience eager to see it on a big screen for the first time. “What is old is new for these younger audiences,” she said.

Last year, McFarlane Toys resurrected their Movie Maniacs line of collectible figures. As you might have seen in our humongous /Film Holiday Gift Guide, the first waves included the likes of Alan from "The Hangover," Gandalf from "Lord of the Rings," the titular soccer coach from "Ted Lasso," and all four players from "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle," just to name a few. This year, the Movie Maniacs line continues to expand with a variety of collectible figures across several genres.
First up, in honor of the 25th anniversary of "The Matrix," both Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) are getting their own figures in the line. Switching over to the sports arena, there's Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) and his formidable opponent Apollo Creed (the late Carl Weathers). Set in the outer boroughs of New York City, Nick Bentgen’s latest documentary #LoveYourz follows a group of teens who have formed a self-love creative collective as they look to pave a way for themselves into the future. What makes the film so compelling is Bentgen’s ability to capture these teens on their own terms. The camera often floats through organic scenarios, catching moments on the fly, whilst maintaining an intimacy that feels immersive. This is also backed by the use of multiple visual mediums, with great high res photography combined with retro VHS-style footage to give the film a fresh aesthetic buoyancy that keeps you engaged. Dn sat down with Bentgen to talk over the creation of #LoveYourz, revealing the serendipitous moment that led to its creation, the decision making behind his multi-camera setup, and the filmmaking rules he followed to tell his story with authenticity.

Matthew McConaughey may be a very recognisable star now due to his breakout roles during a couple of last decades, but he actually had an iconic way to kick his career off more than thirty years ago.
Back in 1993, the young actor starred in a coming-of-age comedy Dazed and Confused — and though the movie eventually didn’t become a box office hit, it stayed in the fans’ hearts forever thanks to McConaughey’s improvised line.
During his recent interview with People, the actor reflected on the most iconic roles in his career — with one of them being the portrayal of David Wooderson from Dazed and Confused. The film became quite a literal golden ticket to the big cinema for McConaughey and to this day remains one of his finest works on the screen.
As the actor recalled, on that day he had come to the set earlier to do makeup...

The Texas-born actress began her career in commercials and bit parts in films like “Dazed and Confused” and “Reality Bites” plus lead roles in less than acclaimed films such as one of the many Texas Chainsaw Massacre films. She managed to turn that career trajectory around and earned three consecutive Oscar nominations in 2001, 2002 and 2003 for “Bridget Jones’ Diary,” “Chicago,” and “Cold Mountain” respectively. Matthew McConaughey is opening up about the dynamic between him and Kate Hudson on the set of How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.
The Oscar winner sat down with People to celebrate the publication’s 50th anniversary, during which he talked through some of his most iconic roles, including his stint as the rom-com heartthrob. He recalled meeting his co-star before production began on the film.
“I remember we met on the Paramount lot — I believe it was the time — and those casting sort of meeting couches, especially for rom-coms, you want to see the chemistry between the two leads,” he said. “You want to see how the jive is. We’re not reading through the script. We’re not reading lines.”
He continued, “Immediately, we were comfortable with each other, and we jacked with each other, and we busted each other’s chops, and we laughed a lot.
