No one sets out to be an object of obsession.
On Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer” when Martha (Jessica Gunning) enters the pub where down-and-out comedian Donny Dunn (show creator and writer Richard Gadd) works, she is looking downcast, like she’s trying to disappear. One simple cup of tea opens her up. It’s an act of kindness (or pity), but that’s all it takes for Donny to become her new fixation. Her interest in him unfolds in a montage of colorful outfits, badly applied pink lipstick and lies. She sends him tens of thousands of emails, ranging from the randy (“myy curtains r waitinfro yu they r readyy”) to the ranting (“i just had an egg”). She follows him home and sits outside his window for hours, pretends to be a hot-shot lawyer with politicians’ names in her phone and to own a penthouse in Belsize Park. Martha...

We all make moral decisions when we engage with art, consciously or not. For some, an element of a film’s moral makeup crosses a line and makes it reprehensible. This can be in relation to the fiction of the piece or the real world events that took place surrounding the movie. If you, Dear Reader, have such strong moral convictions and/or are sensitive to taboo topics in your movies, then The Crush is not going to be the ‘90s horror flick for you.
Because The Crush is pure sleaze on the screen and even ickier behind the scenes.

Los Angeles, May 28 (Ians) Hollywood actress Alicia Silverstone recently remembered a day when she apparently was less than impressed with having to do a photoshoot.
The ‘Clueless’ star, 46, shared a hilarious picture to Instagram, taken from a 1990s shoot that she admittedly wasn’t really feeling, reports People magazine.
She captioned the picture: “I wish I could say I was giving baddie energy here (is that what the kids say today!?) but if I’m being honest, I think I just was over this photoshoot. Who knows.”
The image featured the actress, seemingly during her teenage years, as she squatted in front of a camera and posed in front of a brick wall.
As per People, the pose was of her looking a little “over” the whole thing, as she rocked a leather jacket, combat boots and a pair of blue jeans.
Many fans pointed out in the comment section...

One can only imagine how many times a week someone shouts “As you wish!” at Cary Elwes. The role of Westley from The Princess Bride is easily the signature role of Cary Elwes. But he spent years avoiding any movie featuring a sword and/or a pirate, partly because of the restrictions it put on him as an actor.
“I try to look for roles that push me as an artist,” Elwes told The Independent. “Certainly after The Princess Bride I was offered a ton of medieval comedies. I can’t tell you how many scripts I got where I had to pick up a sword or was a pirate. I turned them all down.” Well, almost all of them. “The only one I was willing to accept was Robin Hood,” he said, citing 1993’s Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Mel Brooks’ parody of the legendary character.

Judging from the marketing of The Tutor, you’d be forgiven for mistaking the film for a contemporary queer update of a film like The Crush (1993). While not exclusively the purview of the 90s, a film like The Crush – in which an underage “sexpot” with a malicious streak ensnares an older man in her web of sexual intrigue – prospered in the era of Erotic Thrillers, Dtv and Vcrs.
Films in which adults are tempted into sexual relationships with minors are considered taboo for mainstream contemporary audiences. This is why the marketing of The Tutor was intriguing: the trailer suggests that rich, privileged teen Jackson (Stranger Things’ Noah Schnapp) unfairly accuses his working class tutor Ethan (Garrett Hedlund) of improper behaviour. The young man then begins to stalk and effectively ruin the life of the older man, jeopardizing his reputation and the status of his relationship with pregnant girlfriend, Annie (Victoria Justice...

Alicia Silverstone had given up on acting because she “wasn’t happy” in Hollywood. The 46-year-old star launched her career appearing in 1993 movie ‘The Crush’ as well as part of videos for rock band Aerosmith and later became a household name after starring as Cher in hit teen movie ‘Clueless’ in 1995.
But, the actress has admitted she wasn’t “comfortable” with fame, reports Female First UK.
She told The Hollywood Reporter: “When ‘Clueless’ came out, it really shifted. I had been the girl from ‘Crush’, then I was the Aerosmith chick, and then, after that, I was Cher. It was very complicated and I don’t think I knew how to manage it: I didn’t have the foundation, the good tools to deal with it, I wasn’t prepared for it in any way, shape, or form. I really had no idea what was happening, and it didn’t feel comfortable.

Alicia Silverstone was on a roll in the mid-1990s, going from an Aerosmith music video catch to showing her range as both dramatic seductress in The Crush and fashion icon in Clueless. But as the decade progressed quite quickly, Silverstone ran into a bat-shaped issue that could have cost her her career. Now, Alicia Silverstone is reflecting on her time as Batgirl and how it marked a certain end to her allure during the decade.
Following the dismal reception and Razzie Award for Worst Supporting Actress (“beating” co-star Uma Thurman), Silverstone had some other poorly received movies in Excess Baggage and Blast from the Past, resulting in stepping away from lead roles for some time. “I wasn’t happy and what I did was really extract myself a bit from my acting career and went more into my activism,” she said. “I went to Africa. to help the elephants,...

“I once thought that there were no second acts in American lives,” F. Scott Fitzgerald famously wrote, in his notes on The Last Tycoon. To which Cher Horowitz in Clueless would say: “Ugh, as if!”
Nearly 30 years after she spoke those iconic lines, we are witnessing the second act in the career of Alicia Silverstone.
Her Super Bowl ad for shopping platform Rakuten, where she slipped back into Cher’s yellow tartan skirt to recreate the Clueless debate scene, went viral (as did her first TikTok appearance, again as Cher, spoofing the “as if!” scene with her son Bear), returning Silverstone to the top of the pop culture conversation.
In the independent film world, Silverstone has never been hotter. With roles in The Lodge —the 2019 Sundance chiller from Goodnight Mommy directors Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz — and Jennifer Reeder’s new meta-horror film Perpetrator, which premiered in the Panorama section...

If a script involves the antichrist, gruesome deaths, and one spiraling towards insanity as they question whether or not their child is evil, it's safe to conclude the film can be categorized as horror. However, director Richard Donner took a delicate approach when he asked renowned actor Gregory Peck to be a lead role in his 1976 film "The Omen," the fourth film in Donner's directorial career. Donner's filmography is filled with successful and treasured films like "The Goonies". "Scrooged", and "Lethal Weapon." While his work has comedic elements, "The Omen" was far from a feel-good film and yet Donner desperately wanted Peck on board. In order to convince the highly sought-after and acclaimed actor to accept the role, Donner took a grey-area approach and tread lightly about how the film would be categorized.

The Movie: "The Crush"
Where You Can Stream It: Hulu and Peacock
The Pitch: Two years before Alicia Silverstone would become teen queen royalty for her performance as Cher Horowitz in "Clueless," she made her feature film debut opposite Cary Elwes in the evocative "Lolita" thriller, "The Crush."
The 1990s were a golden era for erotic thrillers, but few were willing to tackle the taboo nature of a sexually-forward teenage girl and a grown man who certainly knew better. Elwes plays a writer named Nick Eliot who moves to a new city for a magazine job, and rents the back house of Cliff (Kurtwood Smith) and Liv Forrester (Gwynyth Walsh), whose 14-year-old daughter, Adrian (Alicia Silverstone) becomes enamored with him. When Alicia Silverstone started filming Clueless in late 1994, she had just turned 18, but she’d already been in high demand as an actress. Though her feature film debut had come just two years earlier with The Crush, she had already made two other feature movies and three TV movies before Clueless came along. Speaking on a panel at Steel City Con, Silverstone recalled that she loved playing the character of Cher Horowitz but, because of the workload, didn’t have as much fun making the movie as she’d hoped. When Alicia Silverstone debuted on the scene with 1993's "The Crush," audiences knew immediately that they were witnessing a superstar in the making. A certifiable teen queen thanks to her beloved performances as Cher Horowitz in "Clueless" and as Batgirl in "Batman & Robin," Silverstone has continued a wonderful career as an actor, activist, and vegan cookbook author.
Nearly three decades since her debut, Silverstone is wading into new career territory, starring in the shark survival thriller, "The Requin." We sat down with Silverstone to chat about rethinking the way we view shark movies, breaking new ground for women's representation in survival thrillers,...

The Notebook Primer introduces readers to some of the most important figures, films, genres, and movements in film history.Body Double (1984)Born of film noir and Alfred Hitchcock, erotic thrillers began to flourish in Hollywood in the 1980s, with Dressed to Kill (1980) and Body Double (1984) from Brian DePalma, and the knock-out success of Adrian Lyne’s Fatal Attraction (1987). Although nudity in film had been acceptable for a couple of decades, mainstream American cinema didn’t quite know how to do softcore cinema the way the European’s had managed to. So it’s almost as if erotic thrillers provided a solution—sex can be shown as long as it was presented with a threat, and usually, a punishment. In the hands of crafty screenwriters, bold stars, and directors who were not bashful, the genre stands out for its ability to titillate, taking audiences on a wild ride where sex can undo marriages and careers.

Hollywood star Alicia Silverstone says people have been pronouncing her first name wrong all along. In a social media video that she has posted, the actress not only insists her name is wrongly pronounced, but she also actually demonstrates the right way to do it.
Alicia's contention came when a fan asked for the correct pronunciation of her name. "Tell me what your name is and then tell me what people mispronounce it as," the user asked on TikTok, according to a report in femalefirst.com.
"My name is Ali-see-yuh. Ali-see-yuh. Not Alee-shya," the 44-year-old actress replied in the video.
Alicia then added a caption that read: "Just an Fyi… It's Ali-see-yuh."

‘The ’90s were ripe with sexually charged thrillers featuring scheming femme fatales. With the genre-defining classic “Basic Instinct” turning 25 this week, here are the era’s best villains. Alicia Silverstone, “The Crush” Before she was “Clueless” as Cher, Silverstone made her feature film debut in this tawdry thriller as a 14-year-old who goes ballistic on a journalist (Cary Elwes) after he refuses her sexual advances. Word to the wise: Don’t cross Alicia. Drew Barrymore, “Poison Ivy” Barrymore ditched her good girl “E.T.” personae in this slithery tale about a seductive teen who schemes her way into the lives of her friend’s family.

I had seen and enjoyed The Crush before viewing Scream Factory’s new Blu-ray release of the film, but this movie was released in 1993, which is three years before I graduated high school. This means that I was around 14 years old, which is the same age as Alicia Silverstone’s character in the movie. I’m going to assume that because of this, a lot of the creep factor was lost on me. That I know of, I haven’t seen it since it hit home video, so this would be my first time viewing it as an adult. And wow, does that age difference matter. The first time I saw it, I just liked it. It was a well made movie, I liked the actors, and the story was engaging. However, as a 38-year-old man, I found myself screaming at the TV. “No! Don’t walk down there and talk to her!

It was 25 years today that the Rob Reiner-directed adaptation of Stephen King's novel Misery was released — but its chilling, claustrophobic story about consumer/celebrity dynamics gives it a relevance that helps it run (or rather, hobble) laps around almost every stalker movie made before or after. Is Hollywood progressive? There seems to be a pervasive gap between what is preached and what is portrayed, and that's perhaps no more true than in the industry's historically shoddy treatment of mental illness on the silver screen. When it comes to humanizing sufferers of mental illness in films and on television, Tinseltown has for the most part come up woefully short; indeed, for every "Silver Linings Playbook" there are 10 "Single White Females." One of the most persistent offending traditions is the "stalker" film, a sub-genre jumpstarted by Clint Eastwood's hit 1971 thriller "Play Misty for Me" that continues to go strong more than 40 years later. The most recent example of this ongoing trend is Universal's "The Boy Next Door," an upcoming thriller that stars Jennifer Lopez as a high school teacher targeted by a dangerously obsessive student (Ryan Guzman). Important note: I haven't seen "The Boy Next Door" and...

For a while in the late eighties and early nineties, you couldn’t move for films about unhinged whack-jobs insinuating themselves into someone’s peaceful life to turn it upside down. Pacific Heights gave us the lodger from hell in 1990, while The Hand That Rocks The Cradle introduced the psychotic nanny two years later, and The Crush asked us to consider a deranged teenaged Alicia Silverstone a threat to Cary Elwes in 1993.
For a while, until the fad died down, it seemed Hollywood was happy to mine any possible professional or social relationship for paranoid scares. What if your vet was trying to kill you? Your barista? Your gynecolog- no, no. That’s going too far.
But there’s nothing quite like the concept of the obsessive stranger to push all of our buttons – the idea that someone might come out of nowhere to ruin our lives. After all,...

Another 25 unsung greats come under the spotlight, as we provide our pick of the underappreciated films of 1993...
What a year 1993 was. It saw the release of Star Fox on the Super Nintendo. Bill Clinton became president. Season three of Deep Space Nine premiered on Us television. UK politician Douglas Hurd visited Argentina. Cyndi Lauper released her album Hat Full Of Stars.
Aside from those earth shattering events, we'll probably remember 1993, in cinema terms, as the year Jurassic Park dominated the box office like an angry Tyrannosaurus. A true phenomenon, its profits doubled those of the second most watched film in 1993 cinemas, Mrs Doubtfire, and almost three times as much as the movie below that - the Harrison Ford thriller, The Fugitive.
But as ever, there was so much more to the 1993 movie landscape than dinosaurs and Robin Williams dressed as an old woman.

She shot to fame in the 1995 hit Clueless and the world now knows about her mouth-to-mouth feeding practices used with her nearly one-year-old son, Bear Blu. Here are five things you may not know about Alicia Silverstone.
1. Born October 4, 1976 in San Francisco, CA.
2. She legally emancipated when she was 15 years old to star in the 1993 feature film The Crush.

5. Didn't know how to correctly pronounce "Haitians" in the classroom scene in Clueless, but the director decided not to correct her because she liked the wrong version better.

Oscar-nominated cinematographer who worked on Lenny, Dirty Harry and The Beguiled
The American cinematographer Bruce Surtees, who has died aged 74, became known as "the prince of darkness" for his muted and often lugubrious style of lighting. However, while Surtees was well-suited to the nocturnal street scenes of Dirty Harry (1971), the Rembrandt-esque arrangements of The Beguiled (1971) and the claustrophobic interiors of Escape from Alcatraz (1979), all directed by Don Siegel, he was also at home with the wide open spaces of the western Joe Kidd (1972) and the surfing movie Big Wednesday (1978).
His deceptively simple black-and-white scheme for Lenny (1974), Bob Fosse's semi-documentary biopic of the comedian Lenny Bruce, earned Surtees an Oscar nomination. The film's compelling stand-up sequences owe almost as much to the expert lighting of the nightclub as they do to Dustin Hoffman's performance. As Hoffman paces the stage, chased by his own shadow, the light captures wisps of...

Well, folks, 2011 is officially in the can, and surprisingly it wasn't such a horrendous year. It was definitely better than 2010, which was a huge step up from the putrid 2009. We laughed, we applauded, we were left dumbstruck, and of course we were infuriated. Read on for our cheers and jeers!
Now, with a fresh movie-watching start before us, we're taking our usual yearly look back at the good, the bad, the Wtf, and everything in between.
And don't be lazy by just reading along! Get off of your asses and give us your lists in the comments section below. We wanna hear from you if only to compare notes. Lots and lots of notes.
Speaking of notes, the most common complaint we've heard over the years is that we don't have one definitive list representing Dread Central as a whole so for 2011 we dropped everyone's choices in the blender, hit puree,...

It’s time to throw another peanut butter and banana sandwich on the barbie as it has been revealed that Australian treasure Eric Bana will be portraying skinny then fat then dead Elvis Presley in an upcoming film about the singer’s life. I believe you folks call it a “biopic.” The film is said to document a visit Elvis paid to the White House when Nixon was president. Notably, it’s to be directed by Cary “As You Wish” Elwes, who made waves in my childhood as the hot neighbor in The Crush. (Alicia Silverstone Making Lemonade = My Halloween Costume every year.) Yes, Elwes directing Elvis. It is a confusing day in Eastern Europe. Now while I love Eric Bana (I funnel his sex scenes in Munich into a Kodak digital frame and play it on a loop in the office) it is a liiiitle hard for me to...
