‘The Alto Knights’ Trailer: Robert De Niro Plays Two Mafia Bosses in Barry Levinson’s Crime Thriller
Robert De Niro is a two-hit wonder in the trailer for the upcoming gangster film “The Alto Knights” from Barry Levinson. De Niro stars in a double role as both mob bosses Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, real-life kingpins of New York’s Genovese crime family.
Alongside De Niro stars Debra Messing as Costello’s wife Bobbie, Kathrine Narducci as Genovese’s wife Anna and Cosmo Jarvis. “The Alto Knights” is set to follow the story of the Italian American mafiosi in the mid-twentieth century and Genovese’s attempted hit on Costello in 1957.
De Niro is no stranger to the crime thriller, especially ones with mob ties. One of his first was Martin Scorsese’s 1973 feature “Mean Streets” where he starred alongside Harvey Keitel. De Niro then joined Francis Ford Coppola for the 1974 “The Godfather Part II” and then Scorsese again for his 1990 mob feature “Goodfellas.” De Niro has also starred in “Casino,...

One never knows how critics are going to react to a project when it comes to Hollywood. Robert De Niro has been a part of the film industry for decades, having made a career in a similar role. Although all his characters are multifaceted in every way possible, some of them have one thing in common: they are Italian.

This has helped in many ways, be it financially or when it comes to accolades. However, the kind of characters he gained a reputation for seemed to have also led him down a dark path at one point. One that left him with a great deal of his Italian viewers disliking him.

Tribeca Films, the distribution label from Tribeca Enterprises and Giant Pictures, has set multi-year partnerships with Kanopy and Kinema to stream the label’s catalog of independent festival films.

A Bronx Tale accurately portrays bar brawls, earning a 7 out of 10 score from a former Hells Angels member. Bar fights can break out if an establishment refuses to serve a club member due to the patches on their jacket. A Bronx Tale marks Robert De Niro's directorial debut and earned glowing reviews from critics, but it was a commercial disappointment.
A former Hells Angels gang member explains how A Bronx Tale accurately depicts bar brawls. Directed by and starring De Niro and released in 1993, A Bronx Tale chronicles how a young boy becomes torn between his hard-working father and the charismatic crime boss that runs their neighborhood. The film, which also stars Chazz Palminteri and Lillo Brancato, features some moments of intense violence, including a bar brawl involving a biker gang.

The Tribeca Festival started in the shadow of Sept. 11, as founders Robert De Niro, his longtime collaborator Jane Rosenthal and real estate investor Craig Hatkoff (at the time married to Rosenthal) attempted to bring commerce and culture back to Lower Manhattan.
In the years since, it has exploded in popularity and importance, with major film premieres and fine discoveries playing every year — now with even more to see and experience.
“There’s always challenges,” Rosenthal said about putting on a festival of the size and complexity of Tribeca. “We were the first festival that came out of Covid. It was great. There’s always challenges, always challenges.”
This year Tribeca is embellished with something else – a complementary festival called De Niro Con, which celebrates the life and career of the Tribeca cofounder that coincides with his 80th birthday. There will be special screenings, conversations and live events.
“I am excited for De Niro Con.

A hit song by Bananarama in the ’80s told us that Robert De Niro’s Waiting. Tonight, on Real Time with Bill Maher, he finally got the chance to get a few things off his chest.
Maher tried to balance things between show business chat and trying to draw out De Niro on a few political topics. He acknowledged the actor’s greatness by reading off a laundry list of films enhanced by De Niro’s work, and asked what goes into deciding which film to work with.
“I see the possibility,” he said. “Some I’ve been involved with from the inception. They’re movies I’ve felt were worthy. I think I have a pretty good average. I just pick certain things, that I feel are good, well-written, or smart, or the director’s good. Scorsese, I just go with him no matter what’s he going to do.

"Raging Bull" knocked audiences flat on their backs when it premiered over four decades ago. The boxing biography, which is still considered among director Martin Scorsese's best films, unfolds as a rags-to-riches-to-rags story about a brutal middleweight fighter whose personal life never quite matches up to his success in the ring. Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Cathy Moriarty headlined the film's wildly talented ensemble, while late "Cheers" star Tommy Como played a local mobster and actress Theresa Saldana, who passed away in 2016, played protagonist Jake's second wife Lenora.
While time has taken some of these talented actors away from us, and the real Jake Lamotta died in 2017, each member of the "Raging Bull" core trio is still acting today. To present a "where are they now" about an actor as famous and prolific as De Niro would be silly, but if you're looking for another great De Niro...

The 2024 Netflix film The Kitchen seems to have taken inspiration from movies like A Bronx Tale but added a completely new flavor to it by setting itself in a dystopian world. Fatherhood is explored in a very intimate way, but there are some unsettling themes of abandonment that the film doesn’t shy away from. It is because of its fearless approach that the film becomes an important one. The viewers might be disappointed because there aren’t a lot of action scenes, something one would associate with dystopian dramas, but there are films like The Road that help movies like The Kitchen as they set a precedent for an emotionally grueling drama. The Kitchen is quite tender because of the way the characters are placed in the story and the way the conflict emerges between the father and son after the mother passes away. Martin Scorsese's "Goodfellas" turns 34 this year. The movie itself spans more than three decades, chronicling Henry Hill's (Ray Liotta) life as an associate in the New York mob — Hill's life story was first told to the public by the nonfiction book "Wiseguy" by Nicholas Pileggi, who co-wrote the "Goodfellas" script with Scorsese.
"Goodfellas" is a cinematic shot of adrenaline, cut with vivacious energy by Thelma Schoonmaker and scored with classic rock to reflect the anti-authority glamour of mid-20th century gangsters. No matter if you watch it in all its sprawling glory or just sample clips, it's enjoyable — nay, irresistible.
Since "Goodfellas" packs so many years into two-and-a-half hours, it has a huge cast. So much time has passed since "Goodfellas" premiered in theaters and left its mark on crime cinema that not all of these actors are still with us. Miraculously, though, quite a few of them...

It’s just another day in the life of Jessica Chastain. The above photo suggests that the Oscar-winning actress is calm, cool and collected, safe in the eye of the storm that is the Toronto International Film Festival. A shot painstakingly orchestrated by a veteran photographer, the photo looks effortless and Chastain flawless, bringing Old Hollywood glamour to clamoring Canadian streets.
“I love photographing a woman with great fashion,” said George Pimentel, celebrity photographer. “There’s nothing wrong with photographing men, but a woman who has a great outfit is special. Jessica Chastain came out of her car and I let security know I wanted the streets to be cleared. I wanted her in the middle of the street with Toronto in the back.”

Following its strong debut last week at the Telluride Film Festival, 20th Century Studios has debuted the first trailer for Jeff Nichols’s “The Bikeriders.” The thrilling drama – which owes as much to “Goodfellas” and “A Bronx Tale” as it does to the Danny Lyon sourcebook of interviews and photography that inspired Nichols to write the script – stars Jodie Comer, Tom Hardy, and recent Best Actor nominee Austin Butler. It’s due out in theaters on December 1.
Here’s the logline, provided by 20th Century Studios:
“The Bikeriders” is a furious drama following the rise of a fictional 1960s Midwestern motorcycle club through the lives of its members. Inspired by Danny Lyon’s iconic book of photography, “The Bikeriders” immerses you in the look, feel, and sounds of the bare-knuckled, grease-covered subculture of ’60s motorcycle riders. Kathy (Comer), a strong-willed member of the Vandals who’s married to a wild,...

Filmmaker Jeff Nichols seemed positively thrilled while introducing his new film “The Bikeriders” to the Telluride Film Festival patrons on Thursday afternoon, and it is easy to see why. The project, Nichols’ first as a director since 2016’s “Loving,” is about an American biker gang in the 1960s, and the propulsive and entertaining drama owes as much to films like “Goodfellas” and “A Bronx Tale” as it does to the Danny Lyon book of photographs and interviews that inspired Nichols to write the script.
“I’ve always tried to find a universal theme in my films,” Nichols said in a director’s statement. “The idea being that if you have a universal thought at the core of your story, it is possible to make a very personal, regionally specific film that feels totally unique to a specific time and place that still resonates with a broad and diverse audience. ‘The...

With 1993’s A Bronx Tale celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, two things are for sure. One, not every beloved movie does well at the box office. Two, if she doesn’t lean over and lift the car lock, dump her. But Robert De Niro has more to say on the former, as A Bronx Tale almost cost him his future as a director.
Speaking at the Tribeca Festival – which Robert De Niro co-founded as the Tribeca Film Festival as a way to bring prosperity back to New York after 9/11 – the actor/director recalled A Bronx Tale peaking at #7 and only grossing around $17 million at the box office. “How could you not be disappointed? You do all this work for it. At the same time, I was lucky to be able to make the movie I made.” He added, “I never got asked to do movies after that,” although, more accurately,...

A Bronx Tale, Robert De Niro’s 1993 directorial debut, starred as the Tribeca Festival’s closing gala with the famed actor acknowledging that he never got asked to direct again following the film’s inauspicious box office debut.
“I was lucky to be able to make the movie. I made it the way I wanted to make it. I didn’t compromise at all. And I took longer to do [it] than was scheduled. And I had a lot of pressure…So I never got asked to do movies after that. That’s okay,” he said, sitting down with Chazz Palminteri in an interview with New Yorker editor David Remnick after a screening of the newly remastered film.
Remick reminded him he’d also directed The Good Shepherd. “I did The Good Shepherd. But that was another uphill battle,” De Niro said.

Robert De Niro worked the crowd at the Beacon Theater during the Tribeca Festival closing gala on Saturday evening, which served as a 30th anniversary celebration of his directorial debut, “A Bronx Tale.”
When asked about the film’s mild box office — earning about $17 million on a $21 million production budget — the director said, “How could you not be disappointed? You do all this work for it. At the same time, I was lucky to be able to make the movie I made.”
De Niro also admitted that “I never got asked to do movies after that,” and it was an effort to get his next directorial effort, 2006’s “The Good Shepherd,” made.
“That was another uphill battle,” he said.
Following a screening of the film, De Niro, who also starred in and produced the film, discussed the project with writer and co-star Chazz Palminteri in a conversation moderated by The New Yorker’s David Remnick.

The Tribeca Festival brings its unusual brand of film, music, TV, games, reunions and talks, audio and immersive storytelling to New York City this week, a festival for the city and the latest stop for the film community after a short post-Cannes break. Today’s opening may face unexpected headwinds as New York suffers a sudden, sharp deterioration of air quality due to wildfires in Canada.
The fest, which runs June 7-18, kicks off Wednesday with Kiss the Future, a documentary by Nenad Cicin-Sain produced by Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Sarah Anthony. It closes with a 30th anniversary screening of A Bronx Tale, produced by and starring, respectively, Tribeca co-founders Jane Rosenthal and Robert De Niro. Just before the fest kickoff, NYC Mayor Eric Adams — who is attending opening night — will make an arts- and culture-related announcement with the actor.

For more than 20 years, the Tribeca Festival has given up-and-coming directors a star-studded New York City showcase. This year, though, the fest is offering well-known actors a chance to show up as directors. Michael Shannon, David Duchovny, Chelsea Peretti, Jennifer Esposito, John Slattery, and partners Lily Rabe and Hamish Linklater all directed movies that will world premiere there, with Rabe and Linklater, Shannon, Peretti and Esposito making their feature directorial debuts.
In addition to those selections, Tribeca will feature the North American and New York premieres, respectively, of Steve Buscemi’s The Listener, which had its world premiere at the 2022 Venice Film Festival, and Randall Park’s Shortcomings, which debuted at Sundance. And the festival will close with a 30th anniversary screening of A Bronx Tale, the directorial debut of Tribeca co-founder Robert De Niro.

Robert De Niro is going from Cannes to Tribeca, as the world-renowned actor prepares to kick off the 22nd edition of the film festival he co-founded in 2001 with Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff. It runs from June 7 to 18 across New York City.
De Niro recently appeared at Cannes Film Festival for the world premiere of Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” in which he stars opposite Leonardo DiCaprio. The Oscar-winning actor said there were conversations about premiering the Western crime epic at Tribeca, but that idea never materialized.

With Cannes done and dusted and the heavy-hitting autumn quartet of Venice, Telluride, TIFF, and NYFF still a few months off, what’s a film festival fan to do during the dog days of summer? With New York City’s own Tribeca Festival now firmly ensconced in the summer months after moving off its traditional spring dates in 2021, movie lovers both in the city and beyond can enjoy the annual event’s prodigious programming, thanks to a combination of in-person and virtual programming.

There are plenty of poignant, powerful movies like Menace II Society that share its authentic look at troubled youths, urban bloodshed, and what leads young people into a life of crime. Set in the Watts and Crenshaw neighborhoods of Los Angeles, Menace II Society revolves around Caine Lawson, played by Tyrin Turner, a young drug dealer whose criminal activity gets him kicked out of his grandparents’ house and chased by the cops. Menace II Society marked the feature-length directorial debut of the Hughes brothers, who were known at the time for helming music videos and quickly became renowned for their viscerally violent crime films.
Released in 1993, Menace II Society was a box office success and widely praised by critics, scoring 84% on Rotten Tomatoes. It received acclaim for its gritty style, its realistic depiction of inner-city violence, and the breathtaking performances by Turner and his co-star Jada Pinkett Smith. Menace II...

Beloved by moviegoers for decades, the mafia film genre typically centers around key players that make up the world of organized crime in various contexts, locations, and cultures, with a sprinkle of family life and a generous serving of violence included in the storylines. The genre traces back to the early beginnings of film, but was popularized by directors like Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese in the 1970s and beyond.
Over the years, the mafia genre has continued to defy stereotypes and include elements from different film genres, like suspense or comedy. The latest mafia-related film, "Mafia Mamma," which hit theaters on April 14, presents a traditional look at the Italian mafia, with a refreshing, comedic tone delivered by Toni Collette and Monica Bellucci. In the film, Colette's character, Kristin, unexpectedly inherits her estranged grandfather's mafia empire in Calabria, Italy, and has to assume the role of mob boss...
