In the "Magnum, P.I." episode "Laura", a retired NYPD cop named Sergeant Michael Doheny (Frank Sinatra) travels to Hawai'i for reasons he doesn't initially make clear. He hires Magnum (Tom Selleck) to help him track down the killers of a missing young girl, trying to close an unsolved homicide that took place in the Bronx. Magnum soon learns that the victim was Doheny's granddaughter, Laura (Kristin Brick), who had been kidnapped from Doheny's recent retirement party before being assaulted and killed. Magnum assumes Doheny wants the killers apprehended and jailed, but Doheny intends to kill the culprits himself.
In "Laura," Sinatra, then 72, gets to be fully out of control, beating up people in bars and yelling lines like "You slimy bastard. You beat her face to a pulp. You broke her body down to nothin' and then you threw her in an alley to die! And I'm gonna do the same thing to you!

Richard Lewis, the wild, eccentric, ultra-neurotic stand-up comedian and comic actor who most recently served as a semi-regular alongside Larry David on “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” is dead. He was 76. Lewis suffered a fatal heart attack Tuesday night less than a year after announcing in April 2023 that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and was retiring from performing stand-up comedy. Lewis’ death was confirmed by his publicist Jeff Abraham, who noted, “His wife, Joyce Lapinsky, thanks everyone for the love, friendship and support and asks everyone for privacy at this time.”
He appeared this month on the 12th and final season of “Curb” after begging off of the show in its 11th season while recovering from a series of surgeries. But he wound up shooting a scene in an episode that year, anyway.

Richard Lewis, the master of self-deprecating comedy who whined his way to stardom with stand-up TV specials, a sold-out concert at Carnegie Hall and turns on Anything but Love and Curb Your Enthusiasm, has died. He was 76.
Lewis died peacefully Tuesday night at his home in Los Angeles after suffering a heart attack, his publicist told The Hollywood Reporter. The actor and comic revealed in April that he had been living with Parkinson’s disease and was retiring from stand-up.
“For the last three-and-a-half years, I’ve had sort of a rocky time,” he said on social media when sharing his health woes publicly after wrapping Curb‘s 12th season, which would eventually be announced as the last for the Larry David HBO comedy. Lewis had stepped away in 2021, appearing on only one season 11 episode, and returned for the now-airing final season.

Rita McKenzie, the actress and singer best known for her boisterous performances in the one-woman show Ethel Merman’s Broadway, died Saturday in Los Angeles after a long illness, her husband, talent agent Scott Stander, announced. She was 76.

Belting out tunes like “There’s No Business Like Show Business,” “I Got Rhythm” and “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,” McKenzie toured throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia in what many consider the longest-running one-woman show in theatrical history.

With just a few weeks left in the big Summer season, Hollywood hopes to get a slight jump on the serious Fall/Winter awards time with an adaptation of an acclaimed biographical novel. Oh, and it’s a “heart-tugger’ about an offbeat family. Now, such movies can be heartwarming like Meet Me In St. Louis and I Remember Mama, or countless other syrupy-sweet homages to home and hearth. And then there’s the opposite, the tough profiles of hard lives with difficult heads of the household like The Great Santini or (gasp) Mommie Dearest. Really, this new flick could almost be “Daddy Dearest”, as its main focus is a man who made life difficult for his offspring, due partly to his boozing, but mainly because he could never really realize his dreams, particularly his elaborate, unmade plans for The Glass Castle.

Roughly 15 minutes into Empire‘s Season 3 finale on Wednesday it’s revealed that Andre and Shyne are planning to murder Lucious not with a bullet but with a bomb. What’s more, the I.E.D. is slated to be detonated outside of an event space (in this case a casino) following a musical performance. The eerie and, of course, unintended parallel to this week’s horrific terror attack in Manchester was impossible to ignore, and it remained so as the episode built to the inevitable, explosive climax. Should Fox have pulled — or at the very least tweaked — the episode in light of recent events?...

4.1 The Past Is Parent
There’s a certain joy to be had from a season four premiere. It’s far enough along a show’s lifespan that it feels like welcoming back an old friend, but not so far along that it feels like the old friend in question has hung around too long after a party, drunk the house dry, bored everyone with the nth repetition of its one good anecdote, and forced you to fake a please-leave-now yawn so loud you’ve woken the kids up.
Pleasant though it was to go back to the Brownstone, The Past Is Parent had a great deal more to offer than the comfort of familiarity. It was comfortably the show's best episode since The One That Got Away,...

If the transformation is a character’s external change then the meltdown is the internal equivalent. Sometimes the most terrifying part of a horror film isn’t when the monster pops out, but when a character loses his or her grip on reality. The psychosis can begin gradually, exacerbated by stress, sickness, or an outside tormentor. Often the character begins a film in complete control of his or her mental faculties. But control is a relative term, and in a horror film, the illusion of control can be just as powerful as actual agency. The options: denial or embracement. The psychological break will come soon enough. The only question is, how broken will the person be once it does?

Whenever director Robert Trachtenberg tells people he's made a film about Bing Crosby, he says, "The overwhelming response is, 'He's the guy who hit his kids.'" The actor-crooner's Daddy Dearest image was shaped by the 1983 tell-all memoir from son Gary. But Trachtenberg believes Bing Crosby: Rediscovered, his latest project for American Masters (Tuesday at 8/7c on PBS), will remind viewers that despite his flaws, Crosby is one of the 20th century's most influential pop culture figures.

Directed By: Matt Hastings
Original Airdate: 25 February 2014
In This Episode…
Genevieve has Rebekah and Klaus tied up in separate parts of an abandoned hospital. Rebekah has been poisoned with werewolf venom, making her weak, unstable, and easy to torture. Klaus has been sedated by the giant bone dagger embedded in his abdomen. Genevieve assures Klaus that she is not there to hurt Klaus, and she proves this by cutting open his torso, reaching in, and removing the dagger. It hurts like hell but it allows Klaus to begin to heal. She has mixed up a concoction using Rebekah’s blood that will allow Klaus to see into Rebekah’s mind, and view the torture she is going through.

Fathers are the theme of this week's Beauty and the Beast episode. Here's Rachael's review...
This review contains spoilers.
2.6 Father Knows Best
Hoo, Nellie. Daddy issues everywhere in this episode, am I right? You can eat the family tensions with a spork, they're so thick. Between Catherine’s drama with FBI-Not-So-Much-of-a-Sperm-Donor-Turns-Out and Windsor the Papa Beast it’s like bring your daughter to work day on steroids.
I would like to express my deep and abiding shock at the backstory between Bob Reynolds and Vanessa Chandler. What? You were dating? Then you chose to lurk in the shadows for 28 years? If any of that is true, that is. True or false, my opinion one thing stands firm: even outside of your Vincent manipulations, you are so sketchy, Bob - not least of all because you had the choice of a variety of nicknames for Robert and you chose Bob.

This week's "Scandal" takes the Season 3 shocker cake, for sure (so far!).
The episode, titled, "More Cattle, Less Bull," begins with Olivia fulfilling her Sunday dinner duty with Daddy Dearest (Rowan Pope/B613 Command), who thinks he's making progress with his daughter, as they've made it all the way to dessert without Liv accusing him of... things he does. She quickly sets him straight, letting him know that she's decided to smile prettily through their weekly dinners and refrain from being "brave," as being brave somehow ends with him making her friends kill people. What was your favorite scene or quote from this Scandal Season 3 episode?
Jim: I enjoyed watching Fitz tell Olivia the truth, trusting that she would do the right thing. For better or worse, Olivia did the right thing to save more lives.
Christine: Drunk Mellie telling Fitz why she needed saint Olivia to live was just awesome. "She's the strings that if need be I will pull to make my puppet husband dance." So very true and one of the many reasons why I can't get enough of Mellie.
Leigh: I loved drunk Mellie!

Her father tried to put her on a plane with a new identity. Cyrus prepared to burn her. The team scrambled behind the scenes to figure out something - anything - that would save her.

I'm incredibly sad that Scandal is over until the fall, but also kind of relieved because now I can breathe again on Thursday nights. This show is insanely good and worthy of every single accolade it has earned in two seasons.
Insanely good. So good I had to say that twice.
"White Hat's Back On" was the perfect angst-riddled ending to such a crazy season. And that was one hell of a cliffhanger.
The hour started with the team already knowing that Billy Chambers was alive and well and while I'm not sure how they figured that out, I'm happy we didn't spend time showing it. The fact that he wasn't actually dead was well-written by Abby's thinking he had just gone underground and Huck's mini-rant about getting the job done correctly.
Huck: It's true what they say. If you want someone killed right, you've gotta kill them yourself.
Abby:...

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
In the latest Game of Thrones episode, we were treated to yet more character development for some of the biggest players from the second series. We saw the softer, more tortured side of Stannis and the reveal of his scarred daughter and wife for the first time. The biggest dynamic to this episode was the lord of light (or R’hllor to his pals), and the affect that God seemingly has on many aspects of Westeros life.
Action wise, with exception of the opening 10 minutes, this episode was stylized with much more political backstabbing feel, and the cloak and daggers set ups for later episodes and story beds were glaringly obvious. Budget wise, a lot of money was spent in the climax of episode 4, so it was always bound to slow down for the mid point of the series.
This is not to say this episode...

Review Emma Matthews 12 Mar 2013 - 06:51
Oh dear. Community's latest episode has done nothing to convince Emma it's the same show as it used to be...
This review contains spoilers.
4.5 Cooperative Escapism in Familial Relations
After a less than stellar performance last week, and much of the new season, for the sake of everyone’s sanity Community needed to produce something resembling the show that it purports to be. Even though all the pieces (bar one, as the show is sans Harmon) are in place, so far, it's so far lacked any punch – could Cooperative Escapism in Familial Relations claw back at least some of the credibility that the show is haemorrhaging?
The short answer is no. The slightly longer answer is sadly no. As the clearly over-thought, over-wordy title would suggest, this is a show flailing in the dark, unable to find even a smidgeon of comedy worth noting.
