The Willennium may have started nearly a quarter of a century ago, but Will Smith has been dominating on screen since the early 1990s. The Academy Award-winning star has been a blockbuster juggernaut with a commanding presence on screen, dabbling in anything and everything. Serious fare like "Concussion," edgy superhero stories like "Hancock" and "Suicide Squad," action-packed dramas like "Enemy of the State," sci-fi thrillers like "I, Robot," musicals like "Aladdin," and plenty of goofy nonsense like "Shark Tale" and "Wild Wild West" have all let Big Willy Style flex his acting muscles and show that he truly is a jack of all trades. From his humble beginnings in the ensemble piece "Where the Day Takes You" to the recently announced "Bad Boys: Ride or Die," Smith is one of Hollywood's most prolific and profitable performers. And fortunately, he's also one of the best. It's time to get jiggy wit'...

Three decades into his career, Will Smith remains one of the most successful actors of his generation and one unafraid to continue to pursue the possibility of blockbuster domination alongside smaller projects only he could make happen. Smith’s initial foray into the movie business included supporting roles in “Where the Day Takes You” (1992), “Made in America” (1993), and a co-lead role in “Six Degrees of Separation” (1993): dramas that drew some critical acclaim but yielded very limited box office.
Then the actor reconsidered his career objectives, realizing how important box office was to longevity, and researched what ingredients were necessary to turn movies into blockbusters. It worked.
Over the following decade, the vast majority of the movies he starred in met those requirements — high budget, high concept projects, typically released in the summer, with the potential to make a lot of money: the “Men in Black” and “Bad Boys” franchises,...

Fall is upon us, and with it a fresh new crop of Netflix movies to curl up with when the weather starts to turn. Next month’s most exciting addition to the streaming service is “Mudbound,” the Southern World Ward II epic from up-and-comer-turned-force-to-be-reckoned-with Dee Rees. Netflix sealed the biggest deal of this year’s Sundance Film Festival when it paid a whopping $12.5 million for “Mudbound,” setting a high bar for the drama. Balancing out the heavier fare are classic comedies like “Men In Black” and “Scary Movie,” as well as “Field of Dreams” and “42” for the baseball lovers.
The fresh crop also includes a bevy of critically acclaimed documentaries, such as “Eventual Salvation,” “Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary,” and “Cuba and the Cameraman.” Jim Carrey’s creative process gets a deep dive in “Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond,” which includes never-before-seen behind the scenes footage from Milos Forman...

'Focus' movie: Will Smith has third weakest weekend box-office debut of his career (photo: Will Smith in 'Focus') According to those referred to in polite society as "conservatives," winter storms and freezing temperatures are evidence that there's no such thing as global warming. Let's not even go there. Instead, let's focus (bad pun intended) on the Focus movie starring Will Smith and Margot Robbie as a con couple, which opened below expectations – with wintery weather as a possible culprit – in North America this weekend, February 27-March 1, 2015. According to box-office tracking, as late as a couple of days ago Warner Bros.' modestly budgeted Focus was expected to take in between $22-24 million. Barring a miracle akin to a sudden halt to rising ocean temperatures (pardon the hyperbole), that's not about to happen. Now, before I proceed: "modestly budgeted"? Well, for a Will Smith movie, $50 million – after...

Twin Peaks is coming back. Those are five words David Lynch fans having been waiting to hear for a long time. On Monday, Showtime announced they are reviving the ABC cult classic for a nine episode run in 2016, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Both of the show's original writers, Lynch and Mark Frost, are back to pen the new season, with Lynch also signed on to direct the reboot. Now that the news is officially out, Twin Peaks devotees are wondering where the revival will pick up. Those involved in the project are staying tight-lipped about details, including whether the original cast will return,...

Often when discussions are had about Will Smith's early acting career, and the dramatic turns he made that were counter to his immensely popular "Fresh Prince" image, and which many consider some of his best acting work, his performance in Six Degrees Of Separation is the film that most mention. But I wonder how many of you have seen a little indie film, made a year before Six Degrees (1992) titled Where The Day Takes You, Big Willie's feature film debut, in which he co-stars with an ensemble cast of actors, in a story that centers on a group of teenage runaways, who form something of a family of their own, as they try to survive the streets of Los...

Editor's note: Worthy of a revisit a year later, in light of new discussion over Will Smith's seemingly fading star, and the choices he's made in recent years, including the latest, After Earth, out in theaters tomorrow. As anticipation for Quentin Tarantino’s visionary “Southern,” Django Unchained, nears a fever pitch, my thoughts have turned to the man who was initially approached to essay the role that eventually went to Jamie Foxx – and what his ultimate refusal of such a controversial role means on a macro level. With a filmography stretching back to 1992 (anyone remember Where the Day Takes You?), Will Smith has transformed himself from hip-hop pioneer to global megastar, arguably...

Looking at Will Smith's filmography, it's actually surprising how few films he's actually been in. Since making his feature debut in 1991's Where The Day Takes You he's only made 20 movies, which comes out to an average of only one film per year - far fewer than most A-list stars, who are typically able to pump out as many as three titles every twelve months. Now, however, it seems he's starting to up his game. In addition to having After Earth due out this summer - now one week earlier than previously thought - he has Akiva Goldsman's Winter's Tale in the works and just this week added the crime/romance Focus to his slate. And now it appears two more projects are on his radar. First up, Deadline reports that the actor is now attached to the drama American Can, which is currently targeting Ed Zwick to direct.

Where the Day Takes You 140 still-living actresses who were born before 1930!
Coming Soon the Carrie remake pushed back several months to October release... same weekend as Malavita so I get JMoore and MPfeiffer on the same weekend. ayyiiieeeeee
Backstage a plea to the Academy to dump Nicole Kidman and choose Ann Dowd. Ugh, people... you can have both. Just don't nominate Amy Adamzzz or Maggie Smith (she's better on Downton Abbey anyway!). But Fwiw Kidman is genius so this article is suspect ;)
Pajiba lists 10 Fyc Ads least likely to be "considered" by Oscar. Sad really because I guarantee youse that the one for On the Road praises two performances that will inevitably be better than something that will be nominated instead of them.
Mnpp watch Ja squirm his way through Les Miz. He just can't deal with the all the singing.

They're practically the same age, with names so similar they give dyslexics seizures, and both have played love interests of Julia Roberts. But Dermot Mulroney and Dylan McDermott are not the same person. We swear.
The two actors have both had steady careers, with Mulroney sticking mostly to character roles on the big screen ("Zodiac," "J. Edgar") while McDermott found fame on the boob tube starring in hit shows like "The Practice," "Dark Blue" and Ryan Murphy's current FX series "American Horror Story."
What would happen if these two went toe-to-toe for nine electrifying rounds in our ring of pop culture minutiae? With McDermott set to join Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis on the election trail in "The Campaign" this week, there's no better time than the present.
Best Movie Role
Dermot Mulroney: Randall Hertzel, "About Schmidt" (2002)
Dylan McDermott: Secret Service Agent Al D'Andrea, "In the Line of Fire" (1993)

Men In Black III hits theaters tomorrow, and director Barry Sonnenfeld could not be more thrilled…with how crazy successful he helped Will Smith become. “I’m so excited that I get to bring Will back to the big screen after four years of not being in the theaters,” Sonnenfeld gushed at the film’s premiere, reminiscing about the young actor he hired for the first Mib back in 1997. “In fact, we cast him from Fresh Prince. He hadn’t been in Independence Day or anything.” Joked Sonnenfeld, “I think Will Smith pretty much owes me his career.” The Hancock actor might not agree with the “entire career” part, but Smith definitely recognizes the films’ influence on his mega-stardom. “He hooked me up pretty good,” Will admitted. “This franchise is probably hands down the biggest franchaise of my career.” Laughs Smith, “I owe him a little bit.

Dermot Mulroney has long been a favorite of mine. He.s had an impressive career with films like Longtime Conpanion, Where The Day Takes You, Young Guns, Zodiac and recently the heartbreaking independent feature Inhale. And much like his co-star, Dallas Roberts also happens to have a pretty incredible career with his television work in .The Good Wife. and .Rubicon. and a number of film credits including 3:10 To Yuma, Joshua and A Home At The End Of The World. Sitting down with both actors was...

When we think of Lara Flynn Boyle—seen above at a screening of her 1992 film Where The Day Takes You last week—we think of the hot alien in Men in Black II who worked the hell out of a WonderBra. Or the hot lawyer in The Practice who worked the hell out of a sharp suit. So we never thought we’d ever say….what the hell, Lara Flynn Boyle? What happened to her? She’s like the love child of Melanie Griffith and Lisa Rinna (at the the height of her crazy-lips era). It’s like a face lift, botox and collagen decided to band together and screw the humanity out of her face. If this was the work of a plastic surgeon, then we need a name and number to send out warnings to the unsuspecting population. Also, Lara, time to schedule a highlights appointment. There’s...
