Seth MacFarlane is most famous for creating (and voice acting in) crass comedy cartoons like "Family Guy" and "American Dad." His love for animation was sparked by primetime TV's first cartoon sitcom, "The Flintstones," but animation is not MacFarlane's only passion -- he also loves show tunes and musicals.
Indeed, MacFarlane's all-time favorite movie is "The Sound of Music," Robert Wise's 1965 musical epic starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. As he put it to Wired when revealing his favorite film, "Can you believe that? Who would've thought? 'The Sound of motherf***ing Music.'"
"The Sound of Music" adapted the 1959 stage musical of the same name, which itself was based on the true story of the Austrian Von Trapp family, a family of singers who escaped their Nazi-conquered homeland in 1938. Andrews plays the future Mrs. Von Trapp, Maria. Initially a free-spirited nun sent to be a governess to Captain...

Legendary star of stage and screen James Earl Jones has passed away at the age of 93, it has been confirmed. The Egot winning actor, whose inimitable baritone brought life to the likes of The Lion King's Mufasa and Star Wars villain Darth Vader, died this morning at his home in Dutchess County, New York, Jones’ representatives shared with Deadline.
Born in Arkabutla, Mississippi on 17 January, 1931 to Ruth and Robert Earl Jones, it may surprise you to learn that James Earl Jones — one of the great masters of oration across film, TV, and theatre — overcame great struggles to gain control of his voice as a child. Having moved from Mississippi to Michigan to live with his maternal grandparents at just 5 years of age, Jones grew up with a profound stutter, and has in the past gone on record describing how he was all but mute throughout primary and early secondary school.

Actor James Earl Jones has died. Beginning with the Stanley Kubrick classic Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964), Jones went on to appear in some of the most successful films of all-time. To many movie fans, he is probably best known for his role as Darth Vader in the original Star Wars trilogy (he provided the character’s memorable voice).
Jones also appeared on the animated series The Simpsons (1989) three times and voiced Mufasa both in The Lion King (1994) and The Lion King (2019), while he returned too as the voice of Darth Vader in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005) and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016). He also acted in films such as Conan the Barbarian (1982), Coming to America (1988), Field of Dreams (1989), The Hunt for Red October (1990), The Sandlot (1990), Patriot Games (1992) and Sneakers (1992).

Sad news: actor James Earl Jones has passed away at the age of 93, leaving one hell of a career behind him.
Ah, some sad news to report. The mighty, brilliant James Earl Jones has died, it’s been confirmed. An incredible actor across stage and screen, he was 93 years old.
His career spanned seven decades, and perhaps his most known role is one that people don’t see him as: Darth Vader. James Earl Jones memorably voiced the character rather than Dave Prowse (who did everything else). But then Jones had a voice that stood alone. Just listen to the authority and depth to his tones as Mufasa in The Lion King.
In front of the camera though, when we did get to see him? Well, watch him steal the end of Sneakers. Take the gravitas he lends to his role as Greer in Patriot Games and Clear And Present Danger.

An absolute titan of the industry is sadly no longer with us. James Earl Jones, the prolific acting talent who made an indelible mark on cinema through his voice roles for Darth Vader in "Star Wars" and Mufasa in "The Lion King," has passed away at the age of 93. Jones' death was confirmed by Deadline, who report the legendary actor passed away at his home in Dutchess County, NY.
Jones appeared in several stone-cold classics such as "Dr. Strangelove," multiple "Star Wars" movies (as the iconic voice of Darth Vader), the "Coming to America" movies, "The Lion King," and "The Hunt for Red October," but his contributions to the arts go far beyond his most famous roles. Having first got his start in theater and television, his Broadway performances span the likes of "Of Mice and Men" in the 1970s, "Othello" in 1982, "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" in 2008, and...

Very sad news to report today as it has been confirmed that James Earl Jones has died at the age of 93. The actor is best known for providing the iconic voice of Darth Vader throughout the Star Wars franchise, but that’s really only scratching the surface of his incredible legacy. A huge loss.
For an actor known for his deep, commanding voice, it’s remarkable that he struggled with speaking at an early age. When he was just five years old, he was sent to live with his grandparents in Michigan. The experience was so traumatic that he developed a severe stutter that led to him refusing to speak. “I was a stutterer. I couldn’t talk,” Jones explained. “So my first year of school was my first mute year, and then those mute years continued until I got to high school.” The actor credited his English teacher, Donald Crouch,...

James Earl Jones, the prolific film, TV and theater actor whose resonant, unmistakable baritone was most widely known as the voice of “Star Wars” villain Darth Vader, died Monday morning at his home in Dutchess County, N.Y., his rep confirmed to Variety. He was 93.
After overcoming a profound stutter as a child, Jones established himself as one of the pioneering Black actors of his generation, amassing a bountiful and versatile career spanning over 60 years, from his debut on Broadway in 1958 at the Cort Theatre — renamed the James Earl Jones Theatre in 2022 — to his most recent performance in 2021’s “Coming 2 America.” For that film, Jones reprised his role as King Jaffe Joffer from the 1988 Eddie Murphy comedy “Coming to America” — one of several roles, along with Darth Vader, that Jones revisited, including the voice of King Mufasa in Disney’s animated feature “The Lion King” in 1994, the 1998 direct-to-video sequel and the 2019 remake,...

Pop quiz: who has the best voice in the history of movies? You’re dead wrong if your answer is anything other than James Earl Jones. Indeed, the classic, rich baritone is the defining voice of multiple generations, with him famously voicing the Sith Lord himself, Darth Vader, in the Star Wars franchise. In a much friendlier vein, he also voiced The Lion King himself, Mufasa, and when that movie was remade, even though no one else in the cast reprised their roles, there was never any doubt that only one man could voice the wise king. Plus, he famously voiced the iconic phrase, “This is CNN”. If Jones were only a voice actor, he’d be an indisputable icon.
Yet, there’s so much more to him than just his voice work. James Earl Jones is also one of the great modern character actors, making his film debut in...

In the high-octane world of action thrillers and drama, Sean Bean has acquired recognition for his commanding portrayal of villains and rugged characters in iconic roles like Boromir in The Lord of the Rings and Ned Stark in Game of Thrones. Therefore, known for his tough and resilient screen presence, one might assume that injuring Bean would be a challenge. Unless, of course, it’s Harrison Ford.

Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan has had an unusual history on screen. Alec Baldwin was the first actor to suit up as the CIA analyst, playing him in 1990's spectacular submarine thriller "The Hunt for Red October. That film would have theoretically served as the first of many Baldwin-as-Jack-Ryan films, but the actor was overshadowed by Sean Connery in that movie, and negotiations with Paramount Pictures for Baldwin to return in a sequel got so testy that the studio ultimately replaced him with Harrison Ford in 1992's "Patriot Games." For those who have never seen "Patriot Games," it's the type of movie where a guy sternly says "get me hostage rescue at Quantico, now!" into a phone. We're talking top-tier 1990s Dad Cinema, here.
In the summer of 1988, two years before "The Hunt for Red October" hit screens, Paramount had paid a reported $450,000 for the rights to author Tom Clancy...

Tom Clancy's first Jack Ryan novel was "The Hunt for Red October," a 1984 thriller about a Russian submarine and the CIA Agent, Ryan, who has to assure the U.S. military brass that it might have a friendly Russian defector on board. Jack Ryan worked for the CIA, was a former Marine, and had previously been both a stockbroker and a history professor. He wasn't so much an action hero as a nerdy guy in a suit who could engage in action should the situation call for it. In Clancy's books, Jack Ryan would eventually become president. The Jack Ryan novels became seminal airport reading for a generation, and Clancy authored or co-authored 14 of them before his death in 2013. After Clancy's death, other authors perpetuated the character, and even expanded the series to be about Ryan's son, Jack, Jr. All told, there are 36 novels in the Ryanverse, with...

“Family Guy” creator and executive producer Seth MacFarlane shared insight at PaleyFest on whether or not the Griffin family will ever make it to the big screen in a full-length feature film. The show’s cast also brought the house down Friday with a live table read of upcoming episode “The Edible Arrangement” and nine performances of musical classics from the series as the show celebrates its 25th anniversary.
Without giving too much of the goodness away, the episode the cast did a table read for — written by Travis Bowe — is titled “The Edible Arrangement.” It’s centered on Lois and Stewie bonding after consuming a few of Brian’s weed-infused gummies. The episode features the first time Lois has ever heard Stewie talk, which provides Stewie with the perfect opportunity to tell her all about his old plot to murder her.

In the "Family Guy" episode "Patriot Games", Peter (Seth MacFarlane) is enlisted to play for the New England Patriots after he charges through a crowd of people on his way to the bathroom at a high school reunion. Peter, the shallow egotist that he is, is soon fired for showboating, but at least he got to meet Tom Brady (himself). The plot continues into a snobs-vs.-slobs story wherein Peter becomes the coach for a British football team called the London Sillinannies.

Samuel L. Jackson may be just another actor in Hollywood’s league of iconic actors, but his comedian skills are equally refined despite him not being an officially accredited comedian. A mastermind who never ceases to amuse his audiences, there must have been hardly any instances where the renowned star had appeared onscreen and not made the viewers laugh.

The PVOD debuts of “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Leave the World Behind,” high-profile movies adapted from adult-oriented bestsellers, are currently #1 on their respective platforms. Martin Scorsese’s film tops all PVOD charts, and the timely Long Island-set thriller co-produced by Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground is #1 at Netflix.
Both films dislodged high-powered #1 titles. “Oppenheimer,” released four months after its theatrical run began, enjoyed two weeks in the top PVOD slot. “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” the year’s #2 movie (behind “Barbie” and just ahead of Christopher Nolan’s historical epic) managed five days in the lead at Netflix after previous play, which included streaming on Peacock.
“Flower Moon” and “Leave the World Behind” each reflect the state of film platforming. Apple produced “Flower Moon” with Paramount handling theatrical distribution. It had a 46-day window before debuting on revenue-rich PVOD. At $19.99, Apple gets the lion’s share of rentals.

During pre-production of The Hunt for Red October, the first of the Jack Ryan movies, Harrison Ford had been approached about playing Ryan, but he turned it down, and the role went to Alec Baldwin. Apparently, though, Ford had second thoughts after seeing the film, and he wanted to play Ryan in the film’s sequels. He got his wish, and he starred in both Patriot Games and Clear & Present Danger. When he took over the role, Ford told us at the time Patriot Games was released, he made a choice to completely ignore what Baldwin had done with the character in the first film. One does not simply watch a Sean Bean movie expecting him to get out alive. After all, it’s a bit of a running joke that if Sean Bean is cast, he’ll be getting a death scene. That’s some reputation right there–but at least the actor takes it in stride, recently revealing that one stands out above the rest. Can you guess which one?
Speaking with Screen Rant, Sean Bean said that his sacrificial death in the first Lord of the Rings movie stands as his personal favorite. “I suppose the best death was Boromir in Lord of the Rings, that was a very epic kind of death, it was very emotional, very moving, and Peter Jackson allowed me enough time to die and milk it, and get the music and pathos. I like that one.”

Who's your favorite Jack Ryan? For author Tom Clancy, who created the Ryanverse and wrote or co-wrote 17 novels set within it, it wasn't Harrison Ford.
The Jack Ryan role has changed hands five times onscreen; Alec Baldwin first played the character in "The Hunt for Red October" in 1990, before Ford took over and delivered the one-two punch of "Patriot Games" and "Clear and Present Danger" in 1992 and 1994. After Ford vacated the role, a succession of younger actors — Ben Affleck, Chris Pine, and John Krasinski — would appear as the titular CIA analyst in the movies "The Sum of All Fears" and "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit," as well as the Prime Video series "Jack Ryan."
It seems "younger" was what Clancy always had in mind. According to Indiewire, Ford was director John McTiernan's first choice to play Jack Ryan in "The Hunt for Red October." However, in a 2002 interview with film...

Since 2018, John Krasinski has portrayed Jack Ryan, the analyst-turned-field agent, on Amazon Prime’s Jack Ryan. The Office alum has come a long way since his days as a sales representative in Scranton, Pennsylvania, to get the coveted part of Ryan. The actor, who has been in the role for three seasons, says his time as Jack Ryan helped him prepare for his role in Marvel’s Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness.

Harrison Ford has had such a long and varied career, it might be difficult to discern what he might be best known for. Many might cite the science fiction and adventure films he made in the late '70s and early '80s. Films like "Star Wars," "Raiders of the Lost Ark," and "Blade Runner." Others might be more fond of his intense, adult dramas like "Witness," "The Mosquito Coast," or "Regarding Henry." Others still might prefer his thrillers like "The Fugitive," "Patriot Games," and "Air Force One." Currently, Ford appears to be a nostalgic mood, reprising roles from his sci-fi/adventure era.
The point being, Ford has enjoyed a great deal of texture and variation in the roles he's played over the years, and has proven time and again that he is capable of moving comfortably throughout genres. Ford tends to play confident, righteous, and forthright characters -- he...

There wasn't a hotter author in the early 1990s than Tom Clancy. When the one-time insurance salesman took a crack at writing a Cold War military thriller in 1982, the resulting novel, "The Hunt for Red October," rocketed from niche page-turner to full-blown national bestseller (thanks in part to praise from then President Ronald Reagan). The book's hero, CIA analyst Jack Ryan, quickly became Clancy's James Bond through whom the author explored a shifting balance of global power as the Soviet Union gradually broke apart. By 1996, Clancy had authored seven Ryan adventures, promoting his protagonist nearly every step of the way until he inevitably became President of the United States in "Debt of Honor."
Though the books quickly became hopelessly convoluted and, finally, unreadably nonsensical, the character was immensely franchisable as a big-screen hero. With the box-office success of John McTiernan's "The Hunt for Red October" in 1990, it looked like...

Like Batman or Superman, Jack Ryan is a character that has seen several on-screen iterations played by a variety of actors. Unlike these superhero figures though, Jack Ryan isn’t rich and doesn’t have powers of any kind – really he’s just a regular dude. Created by prolific writer Tom Clancy, Jack Ryan is a man from a middle-class background who uses his military experience and education in history and economics to save the U.S. from both foreign and domestic adversaries.
But even though he doesn’t appear to be much more than a normal guy, that’s what makes him more relatable than other action heroes. Jack Ryan has been able to survive through so many film and TV adaptations because he is able to handle such exceptional situations with his intelligence and determination. He’s the epitome of the “American Dream,” and that really resonates with people.

Of all the Tom Clancy adaptations ever made, Harrison Ford’s Patriot Games remains the most popular. While Alec Baldwin originated the role of Jack Ryan in The Hunt for Red October, Ford’s portrayal has reigned as the most popular. After one sequel, Clear and Present Danger, Ford ceded the role, which was then taken over by Ben Affleck and Chris Pine in two failed big-screen reboots. Then, John Krasinski entered the shoes of the famed CIA analyst for the Prime Video series, now entering its third season.
Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan took the series back to the beginning, showing us the title character in his earliest days as he moved from being in a cubicle to out in the field. The first and second seasons were big hits with fans, while critics were not nearly as keen on the sophomore run as they were on the first.

Between his stints in charge of A Quiet Place, John Krasinski has been going to a Loud Place – one packed with gunshots, running, and yelling. That tends to be the milieu of Jack Ryan, the Amazon Prime Video series adaptation of Tom Clancy’s acclaimed books in which he plays the title role, getting the formerly-bookish CIA analyst out into the field when deadly threats arise. Now, Krasinski is back as Ryan for Season 3 – and he’s in trouble, because now the gun-toting agents are running at him. Check out the trailer:

The first film to feature Tom Clancy's stalwart and honest action hero Jack Ryan was John McTiernan's 1990 thriller "The Hunt for Red October." In the early parts of McTiernan's film, a rogue Soviet submarine called Red October, captained by Marko Ramius (Sean Connery), has broken off from the Soviet fleet and may be planning an unauthorized nuclear strike in the United States. Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin) pieces together some information about Ramius and concludes that he is not striking the U.S., but defecting. He is given three days to track down the Red October, confront Ramius, and confirm his suspicions.

Shockingly enough, many of the biggest actors in Hollywood actually possess pretty huge egos. A lot of them, it seems, believe they are once-in-a-lifetime talents who deserve better treatment than everybody else. Sometimes, when two of these inflated actor egos collide, you end up with a horrific double-Hindenburg situation. Oh, the humanity! An actor feud has been born.
Who are the combatants in this feud? In one corner, we have the alpha of the Baldwin brood: Alec Baldwin. Baldwin is no stranger to weird controversy. The "Beetlejuice" star has been a lightning rod in the past — from his wife basically faking her entire life story, to leaving that awful voicemail for his daughter, to the fatal incident on the "Rush" set where he was holding a gun that killed somebody — so it's not surprising to see him re-enter the petty grudge arena.
In the other corner, we have Han Solo himself: Harrison Ford.

With its list of new releases for October 2022, Amazon Prime Video isn’t fully aboard the spooky season train but it is at least spooky adjacent.
The biggest release this month is Prime Video original series The Peripheral on Oct. 21. While not outright horror, it does sound more than a little unnerving. Based on a 2014 sci-fi novel by William Gibson, The Peripheral stars Chloë Grace Moretz as a woman in a near-future society who may have just discovered an alternate reality. Fittingly, Westworld‘s Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy serve as executive producers.
The other TV series of note in October is The Devil’s Hour on Oct. 28. This British thriller comes form Steven Moffat and tells the story of a woman who wakes up at 3:33 a.m. (the devil’s hour) each night to receive a disturbing vision.
October is home to a couple of Amazon movies of note as well.

After dropping the epic “Lord of the Rings” television series on Prime Video last month, it’s no surprise the streaming giant is taking it easy this October. They still have plenty of new shows and movies coming out, though none quite on the scale of their journey to Middle Earth.
That being said, they’re transitioning from the world of fantasy to science fiction with their new series “The Peripheral.” Touted as being from the creators of HBO’s “Westworld,” Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, the time-traveling series is based on author William Gibson’s bestselling sci-fi novel.
Per an official synopsis: “The Peripheral” centers on Flynne Fisher (Moretz), a woman trying to hold together the pieces of her broken family in a forgotten corner of tomorrow’s America. Flynne is smart, ambitious, and doomed. She has no future; until the future comes calling for her. “The Peripheral” is...
