Kyra Sedgwick was considered to play Elaine, but turned it down due to her pregnancy. Julie Warner was cast in her place.
Marisa Tomei auditioned for the part of Buddy's wife, Elaine, but was deemed too young for the role. Tomei later played Billy Crystal's daughter in Parental Guidance (2012).
Buddy does an impression of Karl Malden saying "Don't carry cash." This is a nod to the American Express commercials with Malden as spokesman.
There is one scene where Buddy Young, Jr. is watching Your Show of Shows (1950) starring Sid Caesar and wincing. Ironically, Billy Crystal has cited Sid Caesar for his reason wanting to get into comedy.
The costly failure of this movie led Billy Crystal to make City Slickers II: The Legend of Curly's Gold (1994).
Lindsay Crystal: One of the girls screaming for the Beatles at the The Ed Sullivan Show (1948) is played by Billy Crystal's daughter Lindsey.
