Buddy does an impression of Karl Malden saying "Don't carry cash." This is a nod to the American Express commercials with Malden as spokesman.
There is one scene where Buddy Young, Jr. is watching Your Show of Shows (1950) starring Sid Caesar and wincing. Ironically, Billy Crystal has cited Sid Caesar for his reason wanting to get into comedy.
The costly failure of this movie led Billy Crystal to make City Slickers II: The Legend of Curly's Gold (1994).
